The traditional assumptions about parts availability, predictable turnaround times, and reliable logistics networks no longer apply. Geopolitical instability, production constraints, material shortages, and reliability issues with new engine platforms have fundamentally reshaped the aviation ecosystem. Waiting for the market to normalize is not a strategy - adaptation is.
The global engine MRO model that existed pre-2017 relied on abundant global supply of materials and labor, available technology, free asset flow across borders, and aligned regulatory systems. Weaponized interdependence and export controls are now chipping away at these pillars, primarily affecting material availability and adding complexity and costs throughout the system.
Maintaining a balanced portfolio of mature and new-generation engines is the optimal strategy for operators. This approach provides operational stability while allowing participation in fuel efficiency gains from new technology.
