Hello and welcome to SUMMER 2018! Summer is the season that we anticipate all year, and it’s finally here! This is the time when we can put all the prep and planning to good use and start to get things done. We have the opportunity to put the wonderful weather and sunshine to good use. Let the longer, warmer days help motivate you to get your task list done, and new ones added and crossed off just as fast. Summer is a period we look forward to all year, so don’t let it go to waste. The key though rests in the balance. It’s great to work hard, but we need the flip side of the coin too, the relaxation portion. So these next few months while you’re out there getting stuff done enjoy it, but don’t overdo it. Savour the process, the steps and the completion, then relax. Enjoy the steps and while it happens. When you look back at this point over the fall and winter season, you’ll remember the stages, the longer days, busier moments. But, equally important are quiet moments, those in-between times where you take a breath before going back it. The body works the same way. We need to put fuel and food in our bodies for smooth running, but rest and sleep are as critical to good health. So go out there and enjoy your summer, the busy yard work just as much as the cool nights on the patio just admiring the view. Relish each day for the gift it is!

The Future Points to Prevention As a new trend towards prevention emerges, we need to evaluate the different options that are available today to help ensure us a healthier tomorrow. One of the most important choices we can make is to adopt a lifestyle that incorporates the concept of total wellness. Achieving and maintaining a quality of life can help maximize the likelihood that we will be as healthy as possible for the last half, or third, of our lives. For many of us, our health peaks at age 20 or 30 and then goes downhill, which may suggest that this is part of the 'normal ageing' process, but we believe it is not. This is accelerated ageing. Total wellness is based on the idea that we should have the same good health, vitality, and fitness at age 50 that we enjoyed at age 25, and the same fullness of life at 80 that we experienced at age 50. Premature or accelerated ageing can be prevented by the activities we engage in, the food we eat, and the supplements we take. These are factors we have complete control over. We need to use them to our advantage, and we will reap tremendous health benefits. Ignore them and be prepared to pay the price! One of the essential factors in achieving health and wellness is the foods we eat. The bottom line is that foods from plants - fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans can help prevent the diseases that are sabotaging us. All we have to do is to eat them! Avena has recognized the difficulty in providing a well-balanced diet. E-Fusion is a powerful food-based vitamin/mineral complex consisting of rice bran powder, Tocopherols, Tocotrienols, providing essential and non-essential amino acids, and its one of the most potent sources of Vitamin E available today. We need an array of nutrients from plants, they are disease preventive and should make up the bulk of our diets. Avena's E-Fusion also provides you with bioavailable nutrients. The intention of this whole food blend is that it delivers rounded sources of B Vitamins, Vitamin E, and Amino Acids. This assists in every aspect of our body functions. Every ingredient plays an important role in carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism. Each of which are critical for energy production within the cells. The essential B vitamins in the E-Fusion coexist just like in foods, and it has a delicate balance. Every vitamin is dependent on other nutrients to perform its specific functions within the body, and its very similar to gears in a gearbox. If just one is missing, or significantly out of balance, it can create imbalances or deficiencies in many of the others, causing the cells to "misfire," or function improperly. It is essential even critical to get your vitamins from whole foods or whole food supplements. E-Fusion is a complete food source for your daily requirements. Be sure you give your body the protection it needs by making Avena's E-Fusion a part of your daily diet!
Raw, Bioavailable Protein These days, protein seems to be the rave! You see it everywhere... From protein enriched cereals, protein shakes, protein power bars, protein enriched baby formula, protein pills and even protein enriched hair care, and the list goes on! The industry has become fanatical about protein! Everyone is talking about it. People from all walks of life, for varying reasons, are using protein powders to maintain or improve their health. As we’re all health conscious about getting valuable protein in our diet, many don’t grasp the bioavailability or how much protein is measured in the body. The Bioavailability of amino acids is very important but it correlates with the body’s requirements, the structure of the protein and how they’re responsive to being broken down. Honestly, it seems like protein has become the latest fad in food! So, what’s all the hype about? What is protein? Should you be consuming more? What’s the best type of protein? How much is too much… or can you get too much?
What is Protein? Protein was the first substance to be recognized as a vital part of living tissue. In fact, the word protein comes from the Greek word “prota”, which means “of primary importance” or “taking first place”. Accounting for an estimated 20% of your body weight, proteins are best defined as large complex molecules made up of amino acids, which are compounds that contain carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, and sometimes sulphur. Chemically, it is nitrogen that distinguishes protein from the other two basic nutrients, carbohydrates and fatty acids (which contain only carbon, oxygen and hydrogen).
Summer 2018 Edition| 6
Are you getting enough? “The most important role protein plays in the human body is to serve as a source of bioavailable amino acids.” All living tissue, whether it’s an animal or a plant, is built by protein. The most essential role protein plays in the human body is to serve as a source of bioavailable amino acids. Simply put, amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Amino acids are the very substance needed by the body to synthesize (create, manufacture, produce and even re-create) its proteins. In effect, twenty amino acids build all the proteins for an adult, which is found in nature. Just as all 26 letters of our alphabet combine to form all the words in our vocabulary, if provided to the body in highly absorbable forms, all twenty amino acids combine to form countless varieties of protein. When you provide your body with a complete, balanced source of amino acids in a highly bioavailable form your body has the whole package of building blocks it requires to produce more than 50,000 different types of proteins it needs (hormones, insulin, enzymes and antibodies are just a few examples of the many kinds of proteins your body has to manufacture). In other words, each of these 50,000 different types of protein consists of different sequence of amino acids linked together. According to the genetic information encoded in their DNA. Different types of proteins are composed of various amino acids put together in varying orders, in almost limitless combinations. Of the 20 amino acids required by the human body, nine are referred to as essential, because the body cannot make them, but instead must be supplied by the foods we consume.
Why is Protein so Important The other eleven, defined as ‘non-essential amino acids’ can be produced or inter-converted (the mutual conversion of two or more things) by the body if the body has the required nine essential amino acids. In addition to serving as the vital source of amino acids, proteins can also carry specific nutrients, such as iron and Vitamin A. As such inadequate protein intake may impair the function of many nutrients, whereas ideal amounts of quality amino acids help to increase the absorption of other vital nutrients within the body. Why is it so Important? We cannot live without protein, which is why it is referred to as “the building blocks of life”. Without it our muscles would shrink, our body tone would suffer, we’d be in a state of malnutrition, and would find ourselves more prone to disease. Virtually every part of our body, from our internal organs, blood cells, hair, nails and even hormones are only adequately manufactured through sufficient daily supply of high-quality amino acids. Protein is not only crucial for building muscle but is also extremely important for the regular, continual maintenance and repair of your body. While the body primarily uses protein to build, maintain and repair tissues, these building blocks make up all living materials. Around 50% of the amino acids that you get into your blood goes directly to your liver, and once absorbed, your liver then manufactures glucose, hormones and enzymes. This turns on your whole endocrine system. Everything from your Hypothalamus, Pineal Gland, Pituitary Gland, Para-Thyroids, Thyroid Gland, Thymus Gland, Adrenal Glands, Pancreas and the Ovaries or Testes is turned on by amino acids. Adequate amounts of complete bio-available amino acids are essential for this all to take place correctly.
How Does it Go from Raw Food to ‘Usable’ Amino Acids? It all begins with digestion. If you can understand this concept, you’ll be able to take your health to levels you’d never even imagined possible! When your food sits on the upper curve of your stomach for one hour, waiting for the hydrochloric acid to come into the lower portion of your stomach; Hydrochloric acid does three things towards digestion. First, the process of making hydrochloric acid alkalizes the blood. Since the blood cannot tolerate an over-alkaline condition, the body dumps the alkalinity through the pancreatic duct into the small intestines, and this is how the small intestine is alkalized. Second, it creates an acid environment in the stomach, so any potentially harmful bacteria in the food you ate are destroyed. Next, it creates an environment that converts pepsinogen into pepsin (a digestive enzyme found in the gastric juice of the stomach). This vital process changes the large complex protein molecules into smaller substances called peptides. At this point, the pepsin reacts on five amino acids. Four of these five are essential amino acids; these are Tyrosine, Tryptophan Phenylalanine, and Methionine. Methionine is a sulphur bearing amino acid that is essential for the transport of oxygen. The other three, Tyrosine, Tryptophan and Phenylalanine are neuro transmitting amino acids, but all four are crucial! The fifth, and possibly the most essential amino acid in the digestion process is Lysine, because Lysine is a controlling amino acid, and even mild heat binds Lysine! Bottom line, if you bind the Lysine, you will not get the full value of any of the other amino acids.
7| Summer 2018 Edition
Are We Getting Enough Here’s the evidence relating Lysine being the controlling amino acid. During the late 60’s when the United States was in fear of being attacked by nuclear weapons and hundreds of bunkers were being built, someone had the brilliant idea of testing the food to see if people had to live underground, whether they could survive on the stored, canned, powdered food. The results of this extensive studies were published in a book titled, “NUTRITION in FOOD STORAGE The Deadly Errors!” In this study, Lysine is considered ‘super-essential’ in that it is one of the ‘limiting’ amino acids. If a meal is a little low in Lysine, it can make it practically worthless to the other essential amino acids to be available to the body. The other amino acids are, of course, also essential, but a considerable decline in their availability could be sanctioned without loss of all protein development. On the other hand, whereas a small increase in Lysine availability would be wonderfully beneficial, a small deficit would be disastrous. This study reveals Lysine may become unavailable to your body because of incomplete process of enzymatic digestion which can cause actual destruction. (John J Miller, Ph. D) (Ruff, 1974)
Another example is the pasteurization process of milk and the heat on cereal grains. “Under conditions of relatively mild heat treatment which does not necessarily destroy Lysine — since Lysine is the limiting amino acid of cereal grain proteins, the vulnerability of Lysine to heat leads to serious impairment in the nutritive quality of the protein.” (Ruff, 1974) So you see, if your food is missing just one amino acid such as Lysine (which is destroyed by even mild heat), it can make all the other amino acids practically worthless to the body. Failure to obtain enough of even one of the nine essential amino acids (those the body cannot make) is said to result in catabolysis (the body stealing from itself, from muscles in the face, bowel, etc.), to obtain the one amino acid that is needed. Unlike starch and fats, the human body does not store excess amino acids for later use. The amino acids must be provided every day! This could be one of the many reasons why there are so much controversy and hype about protein in today’s world. Could the quality of the protein be more important than the quantities consumed?
Are We Getting Enough Protein? Now that we all know that protein is the single most important nutrient in our diet, but according to some officials, we’re always in danger of not getting enough. Meanwhile, some researchers suggest that if a person consumes enough calories in a day, that it’s virtually impossible for a person to become protein deficient… So who is right? Honestly, the many conflicting views and opinions have made protein the most controversial and confusing of all nutrients! It seems so simple, and yet it sounds so complicated. Could there be more to it than just counting grams? Can the determining factor be more dependent on the type and quality of the protein, rather than the percentage of protein contained in the food? Remember that old familiar saying, “You are what you eat”? Maybe it’s time to rethink that, and change it to “You are what you absorb”!
Summer 2018 Edition| 8
How Much do We Really Need? Sadly, the need for high protein seems to be based more on fear than fact. John Kenneth Galbraith of the Affluent Society in 1958 said, “More die today of too much food than of too little.” According to the US Surgeon General, “Eating kills two out of three Americans every year.” Could eating really be the biggest cause of disease, disability and death in today’s world? Exploring further, we discover the initial research to support a high protein diet was conducted in Germany near the turn of the century. It was said to be financed, for the most part by the powerful meat and dairy industries. More modern research from around the world shows that a more accurate need for protein is between 20 and 35 grams for men and non-pregnant women.

The U.S. Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) recommendation for protein is 0.8 grams of protein for each kilogram of body weight. Under their guidelines, a 150 pound (68 kg) male is recommended to consume 54.4 grams of protein daily. When it comes right down to it, protein is the most debated nutrient on the planet! Many misconceptions about how much we need and the best way to obtain it can make it virtually impossible to figure out. However, we do know that excessively high protein consumption is being linked to heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, and kidney stones. Many of the world’s leading cardiologists suggest that North Americans overeat poor types of protein. Individuals following the high-protein low carb diets are said to consume up to 34% of their calories from protein, and up to 53% percent of their total calories from saturated fats. (34% of calories means eating 200g/ protein a day!) So while they may lose weight in the short-term, they are putting their overall health in jeopardy in the long-run, they are consuming up to four times the amount of protein their body requires.

Too Much Protein Could the creators of heated and highly processed protein powders, and bars be a fad geared towards an unsuspecting population, taking protein intakes far beyond healthy ratios?
Skatole for example is formed by undigested amino acids like Tryptophan. This component has been found to affect the circulation of the central nervous system.
As a rule, there are only two ways for the body to deal with excess nutrients. They can be stored; like excess dietary fats and oils are stored in the body in adipose tissues of our belly, thighs and buttocks, or the excesses can be eliminated.
Phenol is formed by undigested amino acids like Tyrosine, and this element has been found to be very toxic. It’s been used as an anti-microbial agent, and can be corrosive and cause necrosis of gastrointestinal mucosa. (Necrosis is a form of cell injury which results in the premature death of cells.)
In the case of protein, once the body’s needs are met, the excess must be removed, often with great effort and expense to one’s health, especially in the case of excessively high amounts of unabsorbable proteins. For instance, have you ever wondered why worldwide, rates of osteoporosis, hip fractures and kidney stones continue to climb at alarming rates? Osteoporosis is caused by several controllable factors, such as the overconsumption of un-absorbable forms of calcium and excessively high calcium supplementation, but also by the foods we eat that are undigested. When food substances are undigested it must be neutralized by the body, and as a result, alkaline materials are stolen from the bones to help neutralize them. As you can see, too much protein can be as harmful as too little.
Undigested Proteins Undigested proteins (especially diets high in protein) can become putrified from intestinal bacteria and can become toxic in the large intestine - primarily in the distal colon and can have carcinogenic affects. Meaning, individual amino acids like Lysine, Tyrosine, and Tryptophan that are not digested and eliminated, can produce skatole, phenols, and indoles. These toxic components can be reabsorbed into the small or large intestine. (Pamela Vernocchi, 2016)
Summer 2018 Edition| 10
Putrescence and Cadavarine are formed from putrefied and undigested amino acids like Tryptophan. These two have been found to lower blood pressure.
Tryptamine, this toxin can from the same sources of undigested amino acids, and can raise blood pressure.
Histamine is also a decomposition of Tryptophan, and this putrified amino acid can produce the following health issues: headaches, head congestion, nervous depression, cardiac arrhythmia, fall of blood pressure, nausea, and collapse.
(Alan Immerman, 1979)
When your body encounters protein that it can’t use, it creates problems. This is when those denatured and unusable proteins have the potential to become toxic and cancerous. Life giving amino acids like Tryptophan can be converted into life threatening Indole and Skatole. If you’re ingesting too much protein, or are not digesting what you are eating, this creates a recipe for disaster (it’s critical to keep in mind that this can occur regardless of the amount of protein you’re eating).
Preventing Purification How then can you stop protein from putrefying? First, by eating food that is as clean and unprocessed as possible. Second, ensuring that you’re getting the required enzymes in your diet to properly digest (with and without food); third, having a healthy digestive system (probiotics and proper bowel movements). These three will work together to give you the maximum digestion of your food with the minimum chance of your food becoming toxic.
What’s the Best Quality Protein? Logically speaking, your body can only be as healthy as the quality of the fuel it’s fed. Overeating does not mean that the body will get all the nutrients it needs. Again, excess nutrients are either stored (mostly in fat tissues) or need to be eliminated by the body. Protein, while being the most important nutritional factor, it is also the most difficult dietary element to digest. Above all, the quality of protein is far more critical than the quantity. Again, while plant-based sources of protein are considered incomplete, the bioavailability (or digestibility and absorbability) of plant-based protein is estimated at 90 - 95% absorption, whereas animal-based protein has an estimated bio-availability of 70- 80%, this is only if the Lysine and necessary enzymes are available at the same time to complete the digestion process. Breaking down the high protein myths further, Dr. Colin T. Campbell’s studies documented in his bestselling book “The China Study”, the largest study in human nutrition ever conducted, documents show how a 20% animal protein diet can be dangerous to one’s health, and in fact leads to the modern diseases of today. The research indicates that the rats who were fed 20% casein (cow milk protein) developed cancerous tumours and died early, while those fed 5% casein were lean and vigorous beyond their life expectancy.
Further more when the diets of the rat two groups were switched, Campbell and other researchers around the world repeatedly got the same results. Formerly lean animals developed tumours and died on a high-protein diet, while the tumours of overweight cancer ridden animals disappeared and life expectancy increased when they were switched to low-protein diet. In closing, our intent is to stress the importance of the quality of protein, as it’s through the assimilation of amino acids that your body produces over 50,000 types of protein. To ensure that you get all the essential amino acids in an easily digestible, highly bio-available form, supplementing with Avena’s RP3 and E-Fusion delivers a premium, dynamic protein and whole foods available! Ways to ensure you’re getting as much nutrients as possible (not just protein)
A great practice to use if you are going by the nutrition data is to overshoot by at least 10%. This will give you a buffer to offset for the outside influences on digestion.
Eat a variety of foods daily (eating limited types of food may not provide enough variety in amino acids).
Eat 80% of your foods fresh and raw, the less altered your food is (processed or too much cooked), the greater the chance for utilization.
If you’re eating food that is cooked or processed in any way, take enzymes to enhance nutrient absorption.
A clean/detoxified bowel will allow for greater utilization/uptake of nutrients in food, including protein.
Amazingly, your state of mind and stress levels drastically effect nutrient assimilation! Being calm and relaxed while eating will enhance your digestion.
Remember the math; the volume of protein in the food won’t matter if that doesn’t translate into absorption. (10 grams of protein per serving, but if you’re only able to digest 25% of your food, it means you’re getting at best 2.5 grams)

Protein & Probiotics Digestion happens in the gut, and that’s exactly where bacteria thrive. I’m sure you’ve heard the question before ‘where are you getting your protein’. While this question does have value I think another, equally important one; we should be asking ourselves is ‘is my body getting the protein I’m eating’. We want to know that all this healthy food we’re feeding ourselves is going to good use. You see, there’s lots of protein in our natural diet, there’s even protein in oranges, not as much as other foods sure, but it’s there. What I’m going to talk about here isn’t if you’re getting the protein or not, it’s HOW your body completes the digestion and utilization of protein. Once protein goes through the stomach, it hits the small and large intestine. Here is where there are two paths that it can take. A - Nothing happens, the protein runs through your system with no interaction and gets excreted by the body, resulting in no effect, positive or negative. B - The protein encounters a bacteria that determines the potential interactions available within the body, either positive or negative (harmful bacteria). This second part is where the real question about if you’re getting your protein lies. Each and every one of us has both good and bad bacteria residing in our gut at any point in time; the goal is to ensure that the positive and beneficial are always stronger and in control of the situation.
Because if a protein is acted on by a harmful bacteria, this essential nutrient now can turn toxic! Like E Coli turning Tryptophan, a valuable amino acid into Indole, skatole or Histamine which are now carcinogens, wouldn’t you instead wish to turn that amino acid into muscles, hormones, vitamins or energy? It’s easy to hear and read about enzymes for digestion, but for me, the real finisher of the job, the closer if you will, are the powerful probiotics. This is where proteolytic probiotics come in like a superhero in a sea of regulars; getting value from proteins and carbohydrates together unlike the average ones that rely on carbohydrates only. Those taking traditional probiotics are doing plenty of good, but they’re missing a massive piece of the puzzle. The ability to neutralize those amino acids and break them down for positive gain within the body. It’s a double dose of good because it breaks down the protein for our benefit, but also does the same for other bacteria, viruses, or fungi that are protein based (hint most are). The bottom line is that probiotics are often underutilized for their capabilities if not taken for digestion as well as immune support, if your probiotic is strong enough and Proteolytic you should take them with food as well! Let these closers come in and finish the job so you can harness the full energy and power your food provides!

Deficiency is widely accepted as the second leading cause of all disease. Next, to toxicity (the accumulation of too many toxins), virtually every disease can be directly or indirectly traced back to a lack of essential nutrients. Your body needs enzymes, amino acids/ proteins, minerals, vitamins, carbohydrates and fats, which is why these elements are called “essential nutrients”!
