HWA CHONG BOARD OF DIRECTORS CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
As we mark the 20th anniversary of Hwa Chong International School (HCIS), we reflect on our achievements with immense joy and gratitude. Rooted in the rich 106-year legacy of the Hwa Chong family, HCIS has flourished, embodying the spirit of our motto ‘自强 不息’ (Continual Pursuit of Excellence) and continuing the tradition of o!ering a unique paradigm for learning that nurtures students into independent, innovative, and internationalised individuals.
In our formative years, HCIS began as a modest but bold venture, guided by the shared educational vision of the Hwa Chong family. We are grateful for the encouragement and early support from Hwa Chong Institution and our pioneering alumni. Their involvement, whether in institutional support, advisory roles, joint events and shared spaces, or simply by modelling the spirit of selfless contribution, helped establish the school’s emerging identity and place within the family. These connections have fostered a culture of mentorship, resilience, and shared purpose that continues to build a school and develop students with HEART: honour, empathy, accountability, respect, and tenacity.
This year, under the theme ‘Rejoice’, we celebrate two decades of educational excellence and the promising future sculpted by the collective e!orts of our community. The opening of our Annex expansion symbolises this bright future, with facilities like the expanded library, state-ofthe-art Media Studio, and dynamic Maker Space designed to support both the academic and creative pursuits of our students. These new facilities epitomise our commitment to fostering a holistic educational environment where the aspirations of our students are nurtured and developed.
Our Board of Directors, School Management Committee, volunteers, and school leaders have been instrumental in these achievements, ensuring that HCIS not only upholds the legacy of the Hwa Chong family but also leads the way in educational innovation. Our school’s vision, to be a leading International Baccalaureate World School that celebrates Asian Culture and Values, continues to guide our e!orts and progress.
The 20th Anniversary Celebration and Homecoming event, held on the 8th of August, brought together our esteemed alumni, sta!, and students in a day filled with joy, shared memories, and community spirit. These festivities successfully showcased the enduring bonds and shared aspirations that define the HCIS spirit. The event was a true celebration of our collective achievements and the strong sense of unity that makes our school community so special.
As we rejoice in and celebrate our accomplishments, we also renew our commitment to innovation and lifelong learning. The upgraded facilities and expanded infrastructure are more than just physical structures; they serve as the foundation for our students to thrive in a rapidly evolving global landscape, one that is premised on the groundwork laid by the dedicated people who make HCIS what it is today.
In closing, I extend heartfelt gratitude to each member of our school community – students, parents, sta!, and alumni. Your dedication and belief in our mission fuel our continuous pursuit of excellence. Let us step into the next decade with the same pioneering spirit and collective resolve that have brought us to this significant milestone. Together, let us continue to make HCIS a place where the future is bright, the community is strong and warm, and every day is a reason to REJOICE.
This year, as Hwa Chong International School (HCIS) celebrates its 20th anniversary, we rejoice not only in how far we have come, but also in the enduring values and shared commitment that have guided us from the beginning. Twenty years may be a brief chapter in the century-old Hwa Chong story, but for HCIS, it has been a journey defined by purposeful growth, strong partnerships, and a deep belief in holistic education.
From the perspective of the School Management Committee, this progress reflects a series of deliberate e!orts. We have worked to develop a curriculum that nurtures both intellect and character, invest in future-ready infrastructure, and foster a community culture grounded in our HEART values: honour, empathy, accountability, respect, and tenacity. Milestones such as the adoption of the IB Diploma Programme and the newly completed Annex, with its Media Studio, Maker Space, and expanded library, all reflect our commitment to supporting student growth and innovation.
Aligned with the school’s mission, Empowering our Learners with Character and Global Competency to be Individuals of Impact through a Value-add Education, we take pride in HCIS’ emphasis on holistic development and experiential learning. Whether through the Shamrock Programme,
Resilience Camp, Internationalism Trips, CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) portfolio, or co-curricular activities, students are encouraged to lead, collaborate, and reflect. A signature initiative is ‘HCIS Gives Back’, our annual service-learning event held in conjunction with National Day. Through meaningful activities such as community engagement with elder care centres, environmental clean-ups, and outreach for underserved groups, students connect with broader society, building empathy, civicmindedness, and global awareness.
Leadership development also remains a core focus of the HCIS experience. Through Student Leadership Councils, the House System, and class-led initiatives, students are empowered to lead with integrity, initiative, and purpose. These opportunities strengthen student voice and character, while fostering habits of social responsibility. We are proud to see our students rise to the challenges of leadership in ways that are both meaningful and lasting, emerging as confident, capable, and compassionate individuals.
As we reflect on how far we have come, it is equally important to honour the people and relationships that have sustained us. The 20th Anniversary Celebrations and Homecoming event was a powerful reminder of the enduring bonds that define the HCIS community. Seeing generations of students, sta!, and families gathered together was a testament to the shared spirit that continues to shape our school.
I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the Board of HCIS, my fellow School Management Committee members, school leaders, alumni, and educators, as well as our students and parents. Your unwavering support, trust, and resilience have played a vital role in shaping the school’s identity and direction over the past two decades.
To the graduating Class of 2025, you are part of a special milestone in the HCIS story. May you carry forward the friendships, values, and lessons you have gained here. Pursue excellence with courage, lead with compassion, and continue to be individuals of impact wherever life takes you.
Happy 20th Anniversary, HCIS. Let us rejoice in our shared achievements and look ahead with strength, spirit, and shared purpose.
2025 has been a year of profound impact and historic significance for HCIS. We rejoice in the commemoration of our 20th anniversary, a substantial and inspiring milestone for our young school, marking two decades of dedication to excellence and student development. It has been a year defined by celebrating our past successes while firmly setting our sights on the future we intend to create. The year began with a powerful a"rmation of our academic vision. We were immensely proud to announce the outstanding results of our International Baccalaureate (IB) students. A notable 56.4% of the cohort scored 38 points or higher, with as many as 44.2% surpassing the 40-point threshold. These stellar achievements are not just a collection of impressive scores, but a powerful validation of the architecture of learning built here — the tireless dedication of our faculty, the trust of our parents, and the sheer perseverance of our graduating class. When we celebrate these accomplishments, we are celebrating more than just grades; we are celebrating students who have demonstrated the academic rigour, discipline, and global perspective necessary to meet and exceed the high standards of a world-class education. Their success is our shared source of pride and the foundation upon which we build the next chapter.
HCIS is committed to preparing our students to navigate a world that is more wired, fast-paced, and complex, marked by geopolitical instability, rapid advancements in technology like AI, and economic uncertainties. The job ahead isn’t just about using the tech; it’s about being smarter than the tech. This is why we focus not just on what students learn, but how they learn. Our rigorous curriculum, including the demanding IB Diploma Programme, is not just a marathon of deadlines; it is a forge. This process teaches students resilience, showing them how to manage seemingly impossible workloads, conduct research like professionals, and perform under pressure. Beyond knowledge, success is defined by character, core values, and leadership. In this AI era, it is the value-added learning experiences that will equip our students with the key traits of adaptability, communication, collaboration, tenacity, and curiosity.
With a key focus on integrating mental well-being and fostering a growth mindset in our curriculum and programmes, we strive to cultivate a thriving school community where support is paramount. We recognise that in an increasingly complex and challenging world,
a student’s emotional and psychological strength is paramount to their long-term success, surpassing mere academic achievement. We actively promote mental health awareness and equip students with vital stress management techniques. Crucially, we cultivate a growth mindset, teaching students the profound significance of viewing di"culty not as a roadblock, but as a forge for resilience. When they face setbacks, they are empowered to see them not as stop signs, but as valuable data points guiding them to the next, better iteration. By building this mental strength and encouraging lifelong curiosity — the impulse to ask ‘why?’ and ‘what if?’ — we empower our students to take intellectual risks, explore their passions, and develop the mental agility they need to thrive in an interconnected world. This emphasis ensures our students are not just knowledgeable, but also resilient, competent, and confident.
Beyond the physical spaces of our campus, the true core of HCIS — the living ecosystem that fires its success — is the human architecture we have built together. This community is defined by the strength of its people and relationships. We extend our deepest appreciation to the Board and School Management Committee for their unwavering vision and stewardship. We are grateful for the indispensable partnership of our parents, whose trust and support empower our students every day. Above all, we acknowledge the dedication and passion of our sta!, who are the daily mentors and builders of character. As HCIS steps into its third decade, we cherish the bridges we have built, connecting our past successes to our vibrant present.
Even as we close this historic 20th year, we stand tall, fuelled by the conviction of our motto, 自强不息. We move forward with a shared mandate, to envision the ideal horizon of the next decade and commit to the actions needed today to build that reality. The true architecture of HCIS will forever lie in the soaring potential of the characters we build, a spirit captured in our 20th anniversary vision: Endeavouring for Brilliance, Building Leaders (自强廿载,薪火育才). HCIS will continue to inspire generations to come. We look forward with joy to the boundless prospects that await in the years ahead.

CAS TRIP 2025
Through this five-day trip, while tired on some days and even exhausted on others, we were able to learn and experience the culture and traditions of Laos, while being able to contribute to the local community. We were able to build houses for minority students who live 2-3 hours walk from the school, which limits their ability to attend. Apart from this, we also learnt lots about the local farmers and how they live, along with seeing how a buffalo farm in Laos runs! On the second-to-last day, we visited COPE Center, learning more about the effects the Vietnam War had on people living in Laos. Overall, this trip was an eye-opening experience and was one that forged new friendships and strengthened old ones as well!

It is my privilege to be the 2025 Valedictorian. Our graduation theme is “Rejoice” and after reflection of all the notes, all the moments and all the memories, I’d like to share with you one concise lesson that I learnt and I hope it will be meaningful to you in this season of farewells and new beginnings.
What seemed interminable when we started our IB journey is now racing towards us. For me, graduating is bittersweet. While the road to graduation was at times challenging, we now stand victorious. This very moment, our graduation day, we hold two truths at once: farewell to our past and to all that is familiar and the exhilarating promise and hope for our future. Yet, there’re so many precious memories we’ve created here that somehow, saying goodbye is really di"cult.
So, how do we reconcile walking out these doors that has been our testing ground that built us up and is also our constant, unshakeable anchor? The best thing that I feel we can do, my one lesson to share, is to simply rejoice. Rejoice amidst the challenges and the struggles. Rejoice at the small and daily things that we experience. Rejoice for the moments that take our breath away. Rejoice for the once-in-our-life experience of the IB Diploma. Rejoice, because success and failure are not immutable states. Struggle and joy coexist. It is the perspective we take. So let us fully embrace our IB journey as it was – a complex braid of challenge and victory, struggles and joy.
So, my friends, as we stand at this brilliant beginning with all the potential awaiting us, let us embrace the day. Let us rejoice together this milestone, this uniquely wonderful day as an expression of joy, gratitude and victory.
Sam Zhai Yuyang IB2T
Graduands’ Reflections
My time at HCIS has been an incredible journey shared with inspiring teachers and wonderful friends. I’m deeply grateful for the experiences, laughter, and countless memories that have made these years truly meaningful and unforgettable.
Thank you to all my teachers and friends in HCIS who have made this IB journey such a memorable experience. Every experience taught me something valuable, and I’ll always carry these memories with me into the future.
After six years at HCIS, I have learned many valuable skills and grown in more ways than expected. I am grateful for the experiences, friendships and memories that have shaped who I am today.
I am truly grateful for my family, friends, and teachers who have made my journey in HCIS a joyful experience. I will forever cherish the many ups and downs, cries and laughs I’ve shared with this group of remarkable people.
Through the IB experience, I’ve learned the importance of critical thinking and resilience. I’m deeply grateful to my teachers and peers in HCIS that have inspired me to aim higher and realise my potential.
My IB journey in HCIS has given me a lot of the opportunities that allow me to challenge myself creatively and skillfully. I am extremely grateful to my friends, family and teachers for their support throughout the years.
Throughout the ups and downs, the unconditional support from HCIS, parents and friends have assisted me in paving the way towards a bright future. I would like to say thank you to all and let us all strive towards success.
Surrounded by caring teachers and friends, I discovered confidence, warmth, and belonging. Every challenge, success, and moment of growth has shaped me into a stronger, more compassionate person who cherishes the memories and lessons from my HCIS journey.
Throughout this journey, I’ve made lifelong friendships, overcome challenges, and discovered who I am. I would like to thank all my friends, teachers and family for supporting me throughout my journey.
I can’t believe it’s the end — I still remember our first day like it was yesterday. To my family and friends: thank you for all your support in my HCIS journey. Your love and support mean the world to me!
My experience at HCIS has shaped me into a more independent and fearless person, giving me courage to face any challenges in the future. May we keep believing in ourselves, and may our paths continue in kindness
Six years passed in a blink, filled with growth, laughter, and enduring lessons. HCIS shaped how I see myself and the world, leaving me with valuable lessons, confidence, and a quiet hope for what lies ahead.

When you ask people who their biggest hero is, “my mother”, is not an uncommon answer. Many people look up to their mothers and see them as their role models and heroes, and I have no doubt that each and every one of those women is exceptional in their own way. However, I think (with a biased opinion of course) that my mom is truly the strongest person to ever exist. She is the most strongwilled, kind-hearted, and patient person I know. She has been through so unbelievably much and I will forever be grateful and indebted to her.
My sister developed a disability when she was less than a year old, resulting in low muscle tone, putting her at an extreme disadvantage in a multitude of ways. My mom, however, has never failed to be patient with her. She once told me that my sister’s disability was a blessing, in the sense that it changed her and many others’ perspectives on life. I’m pretty sure she told me this when my age hadn’t even reached a double digit, and it has stuck with me to this day. My mom has always been one to focus on the positives of a situation, no matter what, no matter when.
In 2015, I came home from school to my parents wanting to have a sit-down conversation with me. They told eight-year-old me that my mother had been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. Back then, I was too young to know the significance of her diagnosis. Sure, I knew that she was ill and cancer wasn’t a good thing, but I was never able to fully grasp the severity of the situation. I was upset, of course, but having the soul she does, my mom reassured me that she was going to be okay and that she just had to undergo treatment to
As I’ve grown older, I’ve realised that there’s a very high possibility that she might not have known that she was going to be okay, but she held herself together and entered yet another one of the hurdles in her life with a smile on her face. I still have a picture of her in my camera roll, smiling and holding up a peace sign in her chemotherapy chair. Now, almost ten years later, she’ll be o! her medication in a year.
One night in November last year, I was breaking down over the loss of someone who held a lot of significance to me when my mom walked into my room. I did my best to try and hide the fact that I was crying but to no avail. She held me and cried with me and told me that I had to do my best to let go of this. She’s one of the people constantly reminding me of why I had to let go of this person in the first place, and to prioritise my selfrespect over all else.
My mother is the woman who brought me up to be the person I am today. She’s a mother figure to a large number of my friends. She’s instilled in me morals and life lessons that I could’ve never attained from anyone else. She’s shown me the ropes of life. She’s taught me lessons from her varying life experiences. Because of her, I will always put my self-respect above everything else. This piece of writing only covers a mere portion of all that she has gone through and overcome. I look up to her tremendously and I love her to death. She is my greatest hero and I will forever be immensely proud to call her “mom”.

you might forget how many times you’ve picked yourself o! the floor, how many times you’ve taken a shower and put yourself to bed. how many times you’ve said no to something unhealthy. said yes to something good. how many times you’ve treated yourself with kindness and patience.
you might forget how many times you’ve tended to wounds and made peace with your own anger. you’re doing the best you can, and i’m happy for you. you are allowed to be proud of the victories that no one else can see. you are young and learning to live.
you have to get yourself out of bad places. you need to resist the temptation to let everything slip and become apathetic and cynical toward yourself and your life. you need to accept that it takes time to change and it’s okay to fall over as long as you get back up. every morning is a new start and things don’t have to be this way forever.
you’re allowed to get up one day and just decide to change who you are! we don’t have to stay the way people see us out of the fear that they won’t like the us we want to be. no one else is watching you the way you’re watching yourself. nobody is evaluating or judging you like you’re evaluating and judging yourself. everyone else is far too preoccupied with their own flaws and struggles to scrutinise your every move.
there are still tough days which no one sees, yet i am still here. you are still here. we survived everything that life has put us through! (you’re so goated) (you have a 100% survival rate)
maybe you believe in God’s plan. maybe you believe in fate. maybe you believe that none of that is real. but i hope you seek comfort in the fact that everything in the universe is subtly interconnected. it didn’t work out the way you wanted it to, but you’ll end up where you need to be.
today. i feel comforted that tomorrow might be my best day. and even if it is, i will look forward to better days, until i have a better life.
will you make a life you love even if it’s not the one you expected or thought you wanted? i am going to let myself be proud of and grateful for what i do have. i will be proud of it without other people realising the gravity of what i have accomplished in scale to my life and abilities.
bring back the habits that made you happy as a child, there’s no reason you should ever have to give up harmless things that bring you joy. you don’t have to age out of having fun. just because you’re now in charge of your life doesn’t mean you’re expected to give up on the things that make life feel worth living.
to me, growing older doesn’t just mean more responsibility. it means learning how i work as a person like realising what kinds of fabrics feel best on my skin or what brand of yogurt i like best or how i like my co!ee. watching myself change, enjoying fruits and vegetables when i used to hate them as a child, understanding why i got angry in that one conversation 10 years ago... there are so many mysteries inside me that i have yet to unravel and there will always be more.
isn’t it wonderful how you’re always finding new songs and new books and new shows and new hobbies and new places and new people to fall in love with? there will always be things to love, as long as you stick around to find them.
the light streams in from the window and makes a little rainbow. the stars are a little more visible in the city. the flowers at the florist are in your favourite colour. the ink in the pen you’re using is smoother than usual. oh look! the moon looks like it’s smiling!
…and if you choose to live, in these next 50 years you will eat so many delicious meals, laugh so many times with so many people you love, shout and scream and sing and cry and smile so hard your face hurts. you will see such beautiful sunsets and feel fresh cold air on your face and feel warm and safe wrapped up in your favourite scarf.
there will come a day when you suddenly go, oh. that’s why. that’s why it was worth living and sticking around. i understand. then the moment passes, and you might forget again. but that’s okay, because life is an abundance of such moments. for as long as you live, they will come back.
there are days when i still feel scared that i will never feel better again. but i remember that someone, somewhere, is having the best day of their life today. someone’s hearing “i love you” for the first time today, someone will meet the love of their life today. someone is getting the job of their dreams today. it’s someone’s best day

Our Beautiful Colours
By Faith Loh Jia En (1C)
And there, with a shut of the cover, I finished reading my book, ‘Prairie Lotus’. A pang of sympathy hit me when I ruminated over the story. Hanna, the main character, was a half-Chinese girl living in a town full of white people.
“I wish I could be there for her,” I muttered.
I switched o! the lights and got to bed. Just as I was about to doze o!, there was a flash of light. My eyes flew open and what laid before me was……a door?
Tossing the blanket away, I found myself reaching for the knob curiously.
I swung the door open, and took a peek - a girl no older than 14 was sitting on a chair, back facing me.
Where am I? My head swivelled around, looking for the door that I had just walked through. It vanished! Panic seeped through my veins as realisation that I was trapped here overcame me.
Maybe the girl in front of me could help. I stepped forward, and squeaked, “Excuse me, do you know where I am?”
The girl turned towards me. She looked Asian. Her eyes were bloodshot, like she had been crying.
“You’re in the town of LaForge, this is my room,” the girl replied nonchalantly, unbothered by my presence.
LaForge? It was a fictional town in ‘Prairie Lotus’. Oh dear, it couldn’t be……
“What’s your name?” I asked nervously. “Hanna.”
My eyes widened in fear, Hanna Edmunds from ‘Prairie Lotus’ was sitting right before my eyes. I don’t believe it! I have gone into the book!
As if reading my mind, Hanna stood up and quipped, “Don’t worry, you’ll only be here for a while. Come, sit down,” she patted the tattered mattress on which she sat.
Strangely, I didn’t feel afraid anymore. Instead, I went forward and plopped down next to Hanna.
“Are you okay?” I asked tentatively, eyeing her pu
“Well, having the only pair of ‘slanted eyes’ in town can only bring you so much comfort,” Hanna sni ed.
I instinctively knew what she meant. In the book, some kids at school had treated Hanna unfairly because she was half-Chinese. Racism was common in the 1880s and Hanna had to endure discrimination from the white people; they picked on her from the way she looked to the way she behaved. I could tell it had taken a huge toll on her.
“Papa said that the teachers and parents don’t want me in the school. But I really want to go. If Mama were still alive, she would be heartbroken to know this,” Hanna explained, her eyes downcast.
“I’m so sorry to hear that, I can’t imagine what this must be like.”
“What about you? Do you get to go to school?”
“Yes, I’m from Singapore-”

“Sing-a-pore?”
“Yes, it is a little island south of the Malaysian Peninsula.”
Hanna’s eyes widened in amazement. “And you get to go to school in such a small country?”
I nodded, “It’s actually compulsory to. We have di!erent races in Singapore, like Malays, Chinese, Indians and mixed-race folks like yourself, and we all go to school together.”
“That’s unbelievable!” Hanna exclaimed. “Your country is such a harmonious place for all races.”
“Yep. We have public holidays to commemorate the union of the diverse races, such as Racial Harmony Day. We celebrate the importance of respecting one another’s culture and promoting friendship between races.”
“That’s wonderful!” Hanna smiled wistfully.
“I agree. Though it’s not as common now, there are still some incidents of racism in the world, but we have indeed come a long way.”
Hanna sighed heavily, “It’s not fair that people get to make fun of us just because we don’t look like them.”
I nodded in agreement, placing my hand on her shoulder, “We are equal, regardless of race and religion. You’ve done nothing wrong, and you’ve always respected others no matter how you were treated. Be the person you already are, and stay strong.”
Hanna smiled warmly and embraced me. I squeezed back.
The scene around us suddenly faded away. Hanna looked at me calmly and said, “I’m afraid you must go back now, I will never forget this. time we had together. Goodbye, Avery, and thank you.”
Before I could reply, I was sitting back on my bed as if I had
I was planted not for the sole purpose of shade from the sun, but for hope, and I have stood for both.
They placed me into the centre of their world, not located behind fences or isolated in a corner, but where all routes intersected like hands reaching for one another. Habitually, I was referred to as, ‘the heart of the community.’
It all began on a warm afternoon.
A girl, with soil scattered over her hands and legs, knelt down, and a ribbon entwined in her hair caught the golden sunlight. She looked up at the crowd, then whispered words gentle yet full of aspiration as she pressed a tiny seedling into the earth.
She then spoke to me in a cheerful accent whilst brushing her fingers along the soil as if I were a friend, though I was merely a small sprout.
Voices of optimism and harmony rose surrounding the little girl. A standing ovation emerged as adults chanted about new beginnings, about planting roots in the hearts of those who called this place home.
Although I was not aware of the girl’s name yet, I felt a deep sensation of hope, like a strong thread attaching me to her.
After the process had finished, she skipped o! across the square, with bright sunlight trailing behind each footstep like glistening desire. This was when my life in the community centre began.
I was yet to judge whether the world around me was cruel or compassionate, but her voice reiterated endlessly inside me, emplacing me to a greater extent than my roots ever could.
Seasons shifted. Droughts with scorching sunlight burned; drizzling rain poured down, winds danced with my tiny leaves. Throughout the seasons, I grew, developing my tiny shoots upward while stretching my roots deep below the soil, proportionate with memories me and the townspeople produced.
Feet of children twirled and ran around me, leaving innocent sounds of laughter beneath my branches. They climbed me, often scraping their knees, whispered secrets to my bark, and occasionally carved initials that grew alongside me. Lovers came along under my shade to soothe their emotions after a long date, with promises lingering like the scent of spring.
I quietly witnessed all these moments, and preserved them deeply within my roots.
The girl frequently came, sometimes alone, sometimes with

friends. When alone, she sat beneath me, and with a calm tone, spoke of her dreams, struggles and worries. I listened to her every word, serving as a companion as she matured both in age and personality.
However, not even the warmest seasons can last forever.
Like how seasons change from warm summer to cold winter, the town around me changed.
The rigid bench which protected my loneliness was now full of fractures; the fountain had dried and cracked. More importantly, eyes of townspeople were now fixed on glowing screens instead of the sky nor myself. The number of people who came for relaxation decreased sharply.
And then, the girl stopped coming.
It wasn’t gradual, nor was instant, but it was similar to how the last light of day disappears, being engulfed by the horizon in a fast flutter, leaving behind only distinct memories of the past. Weeks turned into months, and months into years. As seasons changed, I desperately hoped for the touch of the hand I could recognise without question.
But the space remained soundless.
Then came an afternoon, where heavy clouds conquered the sky, and a soft rain spilled from the sky, persistent yet plaintive, as if the weather knew what was approaching. Men with machines and soggy boots circled me, reminiscent of citizens circling the site of a crime.
Progress, they exclaimed. It was here I realised; there was a new structure of the town, one without me.
One morning, the sound of engines woke me up. The rain immersed my leaves as orange flags rustled like a small, sorrowful flag signalling surrender. A metal sign which read: “Scheduled for Removal: Development Plan 7C,” was thumped right beside me. I shuddered, not with dread, but with deep concerns of what might be lost.
The area became still and colder, with warmth emptying away like sunlight behind storm clouds.
However, one late night, as rain ceased, she returned.
Much grown now, her hands certainly not the ones of childhood. She knelt beside me, the same way she had done when she planted me, as the sun glistened its golden light, seemingly resisting the dark.
Tears streamed down her eyes as she smiled and swayed me
She pulled out her glowing screen, the new device which allowed connection to the entire world around her.
She posted an article for all to see:
“This is the tree located in the heart of our town, standing since the beginning of our community. My objective is to protect the tree of my childhood, the place which shares my fond memories. However, the current community wishes for the annihilation of this tree. I reject this wish. I need your help to save this tree, save our childhood memories. So if you remember this tree, if you have had a relaxing moment with this tree, please share your story.”
Initially, there were only a few stories. A man shared a photo of his high-school band performing beneath me. A woman shared how she reflected on her stressful week by listening to music whilst feeling the soft breeze. Another wrote how he proposed to a girl under my branches.
The next day, comments started to flood in. A quiet whisper became a colossal roar.
People began sharing their memories, from photographs of birthday events to graduations. In all those discrete moments, I was there, holding onto the past memories.
Then, the voices from the digital world became actual.
People who had not seen each other for years reunited under me, all with the same motive of saving their past memories, saving me. A librarian would bring her chair and read stories to townspeople. A woman brought her child and pointed at the carving she had produced on me. Children came, joyfully running and jumping around me, like how their parents did in their childhood.
Laughter arose in children; however, so did tears in adults.
The once silent area filled with sorrow and despair changed to a vibrant area filled with rejoice and hope. They didn’t just remember me. They had returned for me.
At the meeting, representatives gathered, all sensing the emotion of stories from the community. The room had hope; it also had hesitation, and it felt like the entire community had gathered together to speak.
And above all representatives, the girl stood. Her eyes were firm, as she glimmered through all the laughter and sorrow we experienced together.
“Everyone here shouts progress,” she nervously started, “but we must preserve our past. This tree does not consist of just wood and leaves. It is our childhood, it is our heart, it is our home.”
She paused right after, producing a deep silence within the room.
Then, she reached out her little glowing device and read out all the fond memories I had with the community from those who shared secrets, heard jokes, or simply enjoyed the cool breeze. All stories exemplified hearts of the town, a strong bond which could not be ignored by the council.
Slowly, the council members reached a silent consensus. Few nods exchanged across the room and the final decision was made: I was to stay.
Outside, workers removed all flags and instead brought flowers to celebrate the occasion. People from the community placed lights on my branches, which glistened brightly like stars arising during night.
The joyous laughter of children, the stories of lovers, the faces of the elderly, they had all returned. Some adults wiped away tears, tears this time signalling relief, knowing something that once could be lost forever has been recovered.
One evening, when moonlight shone, the girl quietly sat beneath my branches. As she had always done, she swayed my bark and for a moment, the world around us had stopped - the movements, the sounds, the passing of time itself.
Then, after a deep breath, she whispered, the exact way she shared her secrets so only the wind and I could hear.
“I’m Lena.”
And during all of this revolution, the girl silently watched with a smile, as she sensed the community had not forgotten me, just like she did.
In that period, I felt everything, the laughter and tears, the years of growth that all collected within my leaves.
Just a few hours later, a letter arrived at the girl’s house, an invitation to the council meeting which decided my future. They were aware of the community’s opinion, and observed the joy of townspeople.
I reminded myself.
I was planted not for the sole purpose of shade from the sun, but for hope, and I have stood for both.
Ultimately, they needed her there, as the individual who reminded the community of my heart.
