The origins of the term ‘London Dry Gin’ came from the 1800s. Historically, gin was often produced quite crudely and had to have many sweeteners added to render it palatable. Once the gin industry became quality monitored, a consistent, drier style gin was produced, typically from the London area. This dry gin became known as London Dry Gin. Today, London Dry Gin can be produced anywhere, however, to be classed as such, must be distilled with the full flavour profile achieved in the distillation process with nothing further added to enhance flavour later on. London Dry Gin can have many flavour profiles as long as it is produced according to the correct production method.

There are six distinct regions within Scotland where whisky is produced and just like wine, the location of a whisky’s production can affect its taste. This is mostly due to the different climates, soils and landscapes as well as the differing styles of equipment used. The Highlands is classed as Scotland’s largest whisky producing region. This can make the Highlands whiskies quite diverse, so it is difficult to categorise Highland whisky into a specific taste bracket. The Highlands area itself can be separated into four subregions – north, south, east and west each of which has its own taste and style. Mexican Tequila was first produced in the 16th century near the city of Tequila. Today, there are only five regions throughout Mexico where the blue agave plant is grown, the main ingredient in Los Arango tequila. Unlike some other tequilas, Los Arango is crafted from pure agave, not blended with sugar cane. The process is very dependent upon manual labour, plants are handpicked after a minimum eight-year period, slowly steamed for 30 hours, fermented, double distilled and matured. Depending upon the tequila, maturation could involve being aged in American oak barrels for up to 13 months.
