Sweeping H-1B Visa Changes, Lottery System Ends 47% Of Surge In India’s Global Investors, From Tier 2 & 3 Cities The move, according to the Department of Homeland Security, is aimed at better protecting the wages, working conditions, and job opportunities of American workers while strengthening the integrity of the H-1B nonimmigrant visa program.
WASHINGTON, DC-The Trump Administration on December 23 announced sweeping changes to the H-1B work visa selection process, replacing the long-standing random lottery with a weighted system that prioritizes higher-skilled and higher-paid foreign workers.
The existing random selection process of H-1B registrations was exploited and abused by U.S. employers who were primarily seeking to import foreign workers at lower wages than they would pay American workers, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services spokesman Matthew Tragesser said. Andamans Crucial For US-India Maritime Strategy Against China: Experts WASHINGTON, DC-India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands, located strategically at the mouth of the Strait of Malacca, are emerging as a pivotal strategic asset for US–India maritime cooperation, experts told American lawmakers. During a hearing on the US–India strategic partnership before the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on South and Central Asia on December 10, Jeff Smith of the Heritage Foundation stated that the islands constitute “an extremely valuable asset for any country,” giving India unmatched visibility over one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints. “I would like to see even more US and Indian cooperation around that location,” he said, urging expanded
intelligence-sharing and surveillance integration.
Smith told lawmakers that China began sending submarines into
the Indian Ocean a r o u n d 2013–14, describing B e i j i n g ’s claims that these were anti-piracy missions as implausible. “Most of us know you don’t need a nuclear submarine to counter pirates off the Somali coast,” he said.
Rental Scams Are Common. Avoid Them With These Tips Are you currently looking to rent a home or apartment? Then you need to protect yourself from rental fraud. Rental scams are common. The Federal Trade Commission reported over 10,000 cases in 2023 alone. Fortunately, they are avoidable. By following a handful of practical, common-sense steps, you can protect yourself and avoid costly mistakes. 1. Always see the apartment before renting. Fraudsters are known to post phony ads using real pictures of properties they don’t actually own. They will push you to rent the unit, and to send your personal information to them, without seeing the apartment first. Visiting a unit is not only a way to avoid this scam--it also has the benefit of helping you ensure the apartment fits what you are looking for. If you are moving to a new city and can’t visit in person, ask if the property manager will take you on a video tour of the unit.
true, it might be. If the unit is listed for substantially less than other comparable units in the area, that could be a sign that the listing is part of a rental scam.
2. Don’t pay rent or a security deposit until you have signed a lease. Application fees are commonly requested before signing a lease agreement, but the security deposit or first month of rent are not required before signing. Be especially careful if a prospective property manager asks you to wire transfer money. There’s never a good reason to wire money to pay an application fee, security deposit or first month’s rent. And when you wire money, it’s the same as sending cash: you have no way to get it back. 3. If the price seems too good to be
4. Make sure you sign a complete lease. Do not rent an apartment without signing a lease. When you get a copy of the lease, make sure to read it carefully and confirm key details. The agreement should always include these terms: • Applicable fees • Monthly rent cost • Maintenance costs If you have questions or concerns about the language in the lease, ask. 5. Do not give a property manager extensive personal information until you want to move forward. A
property manager asking for personal information before you’ve seen a unit or before you’ve stated that you would like to rent the unit is often a sign of a scammer looking to steal your identity. That said, providing personal information, including your social security number, should be required before you are ready to move ahead with renting the unit. 6. Watch out for listings with grammatical and spelling errors. If the rental listing has a lot of errors, this might be a red flag. Most property managers will take the time to proofread the listing before they publish it online. For clear guidance and tools to help you stay one step ahead of scammers, access Freddie Mac’s My Home resources about fraud prevention at https://myhome.freddiemac.com/blog/keyword/fraudprevention. The search to find a place to live can be stressful, especially if you don’t know what to expect. Understanding the rental process can help you avoid fraud and find something that fits your budget and lifestyle. (StatePoint)
He added that a combination of border clashes, maritime encirclement, and Chinese partnerships in Pakistan has left India “feeling increasingly encircled.” “They have the border dispute issue, but there’s also a maritime component to the rivalry, and that has been heating up considerably,” he said. “You have the US with a base in Diego Garcia, which has been under question as of late. I think it’s important that the US maintain access to Diego Garcia, but on the other side of the Indian Ocean, you have an Indian naval base at the mouth of the Strait of Malacca at the Andaman and Nicobar Islands,” Smith added. He reiterated the value of the islands: “And frankly, this is an extremely valuable asset for any country. Certainly, for India. I would like to see even more USIndian cooperation in that area, as it allows both of us to monitor traffic entering and exiting the Indian Ocean from the Western Pacific.” Dhruva Jaishankar detailed India’s naval expansion, noting that the Indian Navy has “increased the tempo of its patrols,” expanded humanitarian and anti-piracy missions, and deepened exercises with partners in the Western Pacific, including South Korea, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, and around Guam. Witnesses argued that maritime cooperation will be central to countering China’s Indo-Pacific strategy. Committee Chairman Bill Huizenga warned that China’s “string of pearls” is “an overt attempt to encircle and control the Indian Ocean,” and said ensuring free sea lanes is critical for global economic stability. Smith urged Congress to facilitate defense co-production, accelerate export clearances, and strengthen intelligence agreements, allowing both sides to track submarine movements and monitor Chinese naval deployments. India Elected Unopposed To UN Human Rights Council NEW YORK, NY -India has been elected unopposed to the Human Rights Council (HRC) for the seventh time to a three-year term starting next year, with a pledge to be a bridgebuilder. After India’s election by the General Assembly was announced on October 15, Permanent Representative P Harish said, “This election reflects India’s unwavering commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms.” Making its nomination, India said its candidature “is a reflection of India’s dedication to advancing the principles of human rights globally, fostering dialog and bridging divides to achieve collective progress.” “India’s enduring philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva kutumbakam’ (‘The world is one family’) underscores its unwavering commitment to global unity, openness and mutual respect,” it said. India also noted that its commitment to human rights is rooted in its constitution that “guarantees the fundamental rights of its citizens and promotes the ideals of justice, liberty and equality.” The Geneva-based 47-member HRC is the main UN body promoting and protecting human rights around the world, reviewing the situation in member countries, and providing a forum to discuss issues. The seats are distributed by region, and Asia-Pacific nations get 17 seats, with four of them up for election this year under the rotation system. Although India was unopposed for one of the four Asia-Pacific group seats, in the proforma voting held under the rules, it obtained 177 votes out of the 188 cast. India last served on the HRC in 2024, completing a second consecutive term. Since countries are not allowed to serve more than two consecutive terms, India took a break this year and contested for the term starting next year. The other 13 countries elected were Angola, Britain, Chile, Ecuador, Egypt, Estonia, Iraq, Italy, Mauritius, Pakistan, Slovenia, South Africa, and Vietnam. President Donald Trump announced in February that the US will no longer engage with the HRC. (IANS) (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

Unlock Holiday Cheer: 5 DIY Decorating Tips To Spark Joy This Season Research shows that everyday surroundings can make an impact on your overall mood— and when is a better time to foster some happiness than the holiday season? From warming up your space with cozy details to mastering the art of a quick room refresh, the right décor sets the tone for making magical, mood-boosting memories during the holidays. Follow these simple, budget-friendly tips from Duck brand to create a warm, festive space that brings the spirit of the season to life. Tip #1: Lay a cozy foundation. Make small, intentional swaps in your living space to create coziness in cold weather. Rather than harsh overhead lighting, drape glowing strand lights from the ceiling, and line tables and counters with battery-powered tapered candles. Play soft, seasonal music anywhere by using removable, double-sided tape to mount mini speakers; toss a couple extra blankets over the sofa to promote snuggling (bonus points if they’re in red or green!); and leave a stack of seasonal books or movies in sight to encourage unwinding in the living room. Tip #2: Pile on personal touches. Science says that decorating with handcrafted pieces can evoke a sense of both accomplishment and connection. Display beloved childhood
holiday crafts and family heirlooms, like ornaments or glassware. Then, carve out time to make your own unique focal point. With a little imagination and duct tape, you can DIY your own Instagram-worthy decor. Consider cutting red and green Color Duck Tape into letter shapes to personalize a festive banner for your fireplace, then use duct

The Great Timing Debate: Should I Claim Social Security Early Or Late? Retirees become eligible to claim Social Security benefits at age 62, but the timing of when you claim can drastically impact your benefit amount. Still, when to claim will be entirely dependent on your unique situation. As you approach retirement, it’s important to understand the impact that timing has on your benefits.
its own benefits and risks.
“The timing of when you elect to receive your Social Security benefits warrants thoughtful consideration,” said Rich Guerrini, head of PNC Wealth Management. “This decision can significantly influence not only the total benefits you receive, but also the trajectory of your investment income, your tax obligations, and even your healthcare premiums.”
• You’re in poor health – The benefit of receiving Social Security early may be worth it, particularly if you’re unsure if you’ll live beyond your break-even point;
How Your Benefit is Calculated Your benefits are based on your top 35 years of earnings, adjusted to account for changes in wages from the year they were earned. The Social Security Administration then applies a formula to those figures to arrive at your specific benefit amount at full retirement age (FRA), also referred to as your primary insurance amount (PIA). There are three options for when to claim your benefits: claim early, claim at your FRA, or claim at age 70. Each comes with
Claim at age 62 You can begin claiming your benefits as early as age 62, but your benefits will be permanently reduced. Still, there are instances when claiming early makes sense:
• You’re maximizing benefits with a spouse – Timing your claim to Social Security with your spouse can help you maximize a longterm benefit, while fulfilling cash flow needs in the present; • You no longer want to work – The lifestyle benefits of not working may outweigh a larger future financial benefit from Social Security; or • You want to preserve assets with growth potential – Claiming Social Security early may preserve investment or savings accounts. Expanded State Leave Policies Help Families Thrive, Say Advocates
When a child is born or serious illness strikes, workers need time off, but for millions of Americans, it’s not that simple.
national nonprofit legal advocacy organization dedicated to promoting justice in the workplace.
The United States is one of the only developed countries in the world that does not guarantee paid family and medical leave (PFML), and currently, just 13 states and Washington, D.C. do, covering just a quarter of private-sector workers and a third of people who work for state and local governments. While advocates say that it’s time for that to change, they are celebrating recent progress made in certain states.
“Paid family and medical leave supports lasting financial security for everyone, including those in low-wage and hourly jobs, and addresses the needs of communities that have long been under-served and under-protected,” says Jared Make, vice president of A Better Balance.
In particular, Tennessee recently expanded on its previous six-week paid family leave policy to include workers caring for family members at the end of their lives, becoming the first southern state to expand its paid family leave policy beyond parental leave. In Mississippi, a new law grants state government employees up to six weeks of paid parental leave and in Alabama, recently passed legislation provides up to eight weeks of paid leave for state employees and K-12 educators.
“Our goal is to ensure that all workers can care for themselves and the people they love without worrying about how to pay the bills.” To learn more about PFML policies and progress, visit https://ncit.org/. “Paid leave is good for families, workplaces and communities,” says Robyn Hyden, executive director of Alabama Arise. “Not only is this expanded leave policy helping ensure more Alabama parents can be healthy and provide the care and stability infants, toddlers and their families need to thrive, it pro-
vides the added benefit of enabling the state to better recruit and retain teachers and state employees.” While these advances are noteworthy, they are limited, and there is still much work to be done, say experts at A Better Balance, a
“The expansion of leave policies being made by state governments is encouraging. We will continue our efforts until every worker, regardless of where they live or who they work for, has access to paid family and medical leave,” says Lori Fresina of the National Collaborative for Infants & Toddlers. The Great Timing Debate: Should I Claim Social Security Early Or Late? Delay your claim to age 70 You can delay claiming your benefits until the maximum age 70, with the primary advantage of increasing your benefits for the remainder of your life. Delaying a Social Security claim may make sense if:

New Report Exposes The Limits Of Plastic Recycling Have you tossed plastic into a recycling bin recently? There’s a large chance that material won’t be recycled.
porations that rely on plastic, have poured billions into public relations campaigns making false claims about the recyclability of their products to avoid bans and reduce public backlash,” says John
That’s according to a new report, which finds that after decades of being touted as a solution to pollution, plastic recycling is not all it’s cracked up to be. The report also highlights the growing scientific consensus on the health risks and economic costs of plastic pollution. “Merchants of Myth,” the Greenpeace USA report, uncovered that less than a quarter of the most commonly produced types of plastics – found in items like bottles, jugs, food containers and caps – is actually recyclable. Moreover, plastic recycling rates in the United States have been cut in half since 2014, from 9.5% to roughly 5-6% today, due to recycling access gaps, as well as infrastructure and technical limitations at recycling facilities. Up to 43% percent of U.S. households lack access to basic recycling services, and participation in
recycling is actually decreasing. Meanwhile, only 12% of national municipal recycling facilities are even capable of processing common consumer plastics. Despite the small amount of plastic recycling actually taking place, the public pays to collect and sort plastics, while most of it ends up burned or dumped in landfills. Researchers say that the plastic industry, retailers, prominent plasticreliant brands, and related trade associations are retracting their
sustainability commitments while continuing to rely on single-use plastic packaging. And with global plastic production projected to triple by 2050, voluntary measures made by corporations won’t be enough. “Sufficient change will only come with regulatory intervention and with politicians holding corporations accountable. Instead of investing in real solutions, the plastic industry, and cor-

Winter Is Here: 4 Fast Fixes That Make Older Homes Warmer And Cost Efficient
of energy loss. Adding insulation here is a high-impact improvement that can pay off quickly.
With the average U.S. home now more than 40 years old, many Americans are heading into winter with outdated windows and worn weatherstripping. As the cold front creeps in, heating bills will steadily increase through the season. The good news: these affordable DIY upgrades are proven to decrease energy bills and help cut down on costs, according to consumer data. Start with Simple Seals: Cold spots in the house often come from worn-out weatherproofing, especially in older homes. A quick, budget-friendly fix is using a weatherstrip seal, like the Duck Brand Heavy-Duty Weatherstrip Seal, to block unwanted winter air around windows and doors. Made with durable, flexible selfadhesive material that won’t freeze
or crack, it forms an airtight barrier against extreme temperatures. Available at Amazon and Walmart, the seals come in several widths and colors to match your home and fit a range of gap sizes.
Options like the Duck Max Strength Rolled Shrink Film Window Insulation Kit include a puncture-resistant, crystal-clear shrink film that is twice as thick as standard window kits to instantly warm up any room. The window kit also makes it easy to apply the film on painted or finished wood, aluminum or vinyl.
Stop Drafts at the Door: Make an old door feel nearly new with a simple DIY draft stopper — a fast fix that delivers cozy results.
Give Your Vents Some Breathing Room: Sometimes the biggest energy drains aren’t drafts and gaps — they are the ways we use our spaces.
Roll a towel or fabric into a tube; fill it with rice, foam stuffing or socks; seal the ends with rubber bands or string; and slide it along the bottom of your door or sill.
Furniture or décor blocking vents can trap warm air, preventing steady airflow that vintage homes rely on to balance temperatures between rooms.
This no-tools hack plugs gaps and helps keep warm air inside. Pair it with other weatherization products for even more efficiency.
Walk through your home and uncover vents hidden by sofas, chairs or curtains. Move furniture a few inches out or tie long drapes away from the heating source to raise the room’s temperature by several degrees without adjusting the thermostat. (StatePoint)
Work Your Way to the Windows: Those charming single-pane windows found in many historic homes are also one of the biggest sources
Sweeping H-1B Visa Changes, Lottery System Ends (Continued From Page 01) He added that the new weighted selection will better serve congressional intent for the program and strengthen competitiveness by incentivizing employers to petition for higher-paid individuals. Under the new regulation, H-1B visas will no longer be awarded through a purely random draw, as has been the practice over the past two decades. Instead, registrations will be ranked and selected through a weighted process that increases the probability that visas go to higher-skilled foreign nationals. Employers may still petition for workers across all wage levels, but the change is intended to curb systemic abuse where the registration pool was flooded with lower-wage applications. The annual number of H-1B visas remains capped at 65,000, with an additional 20,000 visas reserved for applicants holding advanced degrees from U.S. institutions. The new weighted selection rule will apply beginning with the fiscal year 2027 H-1B cap registration season, and the final rule will take effect on February 27. Officials stressed that the reform shifts the balance toward petitions reflecting higher skill levels and compensation to prevent wage suppression. This change is part of a broader push to overhaul the H-1B system, which has been a flashpoint in U.S. immigration and labor policy. Among other recent measures is a Presidential Proclamation that requires employers to pay an additional $100,000 per visa as a condition of eligibility. The administration says this ensures employers turn to foreign labor only when they genuinely need highly specialized skills. The H-1B visa program allows U.S. employers to temporarily hire foreign workers in specialty occupations. It is heavily used by the technology sector and has significant implications for professionals from countries such as India. While critics of the old system argue it failed to distinguish between high-value and low-value petitions, some business groups have warned that restrictive policies could impact innovation and competitiveness in the U.S. economy. Jyoti Bansal Journeys From Small Town Rajasthan To Tech Billionaire As Immigration Debate Rages
India-West News Desk
at tech companies that sponsored his H-1B visa. The rules prevented him from launching a startup of his own, a restriction he has described as deeply ironic given America’s reputation for entrepreneurship.
SAN JOSE, CA – India born entrepreneur Jyoti Bansal’s journey from a small town in Rajasthan to Silicon Valley billionaire is a classic immigrant success story and one that stands out in these fraught times, when immigrants and H-1B visas are under political and cultural attack. Against that backdrop, Forbes has highlighted the rise of Bansal as a newly minted billionaire who built his fortune by creating companies and jobs in the United States.
He told Forbes that he had to wait until securing a green card before he could build a company, eventually becoming a U.S. citizen in 2016.
Bansal, a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, grew up far from the global tech hubs he would later help define. He has recalled that seeing Bill Gates visit an IIT campus and watching the rise of Hotmail co-founder Sabeer Bhatia planted the idea that global success was possible.
That wait paid off. Bansal went on to found AppDynamics, which he sold to Cisco in 2017, and later launched Harness, an AI driven software de-
That inspiration ultimately pushed him to leave India and head to the United States in search of bigger horizons, he told Forbes. At just 21, Bansal arrived in California with only a few hundred dollars to his name. Like many immigrants, he spent his
early years navigating the constraints of the U.S. visa system, working as an engineer
livery platform. Harness recently raised $240 million in a Series E round led by Goldman Sachs Alternatives, Institutional Venture Partners and Menlo Ventures, according to Forbes. The funding valued the company at a level that cemented Bansal’s place among the world’s wealthiest founders. Forbes estimates Bansal’s net worth at around $2.3 billion, largely tied to his roughly 30% stake in Harness, along with proceeds from the AppDynamics sale. After that first exit, he briefly attempted retirement, traveling the world before realizing that stepping away from building was not for him. He told Forbes that he discovered he enjoyed the challenge of creating companies far more than leisure. Today, Bansal’s story stands out not just for its financial success, but for what it represents. From an immigrant constrained by visa rules to a self made billionaire shaping the future of software, his rise underscores how immigrant talent, when given the chance, continues to power innovation and redefine the American dream. While mental health challenges can affect virtually anyone living anywhere, there are certain populations that are at particular disadvantages for a variety of reasons.
residents are either uninsured or underinsured.”
Digital Therapeutics Offer Hope To Rural Residents
Rural areas in the United States have an estimated 17.58 million people in nonmetropolitan areas that experienced depression in 2024, according to microdata from the National Health Interview Survey, but these areas may not have enough support and treatment options. To learn more about rural residents’ experiences with mental health and awareness of additional or alternatives to traditional treatments that may be effective in rural areas, Rural Minds, the only national 501(c) (3) nonprofit focused on advocating for rural mental health, conducted a survey among rural Pennsylvania residents. Nearly 7 in 10 participants (69%)
indicated in the past year they have either experienced symptoms of depression themselves or been concerned about someone close to them who is dealing with depression. “While there are many effective depression treatments in use by men-
tal health professionals, common barriers to mental health treatment for residents of rural areas include the lack of confidentiality in small communities, fewer providers and greater distance to access mental health services,” said Jeff Winton, founder and chairman of Rural Minds. “In addition, many rural

For example, only 17% indicated being aware of digital therapeutics and 11% reported awareness of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. “Depression is a significant challenge for people living in rural areas,” said Robert E. Nelson, MD, co-owner of DGR Behavioral Health, LLC, and medical director at Caron Counseling Center. “In some parts of the country, mental health services are nonexistent or very limited in rural communities. Additionally, the factors leading to depression can be different for those living outside urban and suburban communities.”
That’s no coincidence. High cholesterol and age are two significant risk factors for heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in the United States. You may not be able to slow the hands of time, but elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, also known as “bad” cholesterol, is one of the most significant addressable risk factors for the development of cardiovascular disease.

What are prescription digital therapeutics (PDTs)? Technology is changing the way patients receive treatment in many aspects of medicine. That is also true when it comes to mental health. PDTs are health softwares, delivered using a device such as a smartphone or computer, to treat or alleviate a condition, disorder, disease or injury. This type of treatment may need
to be paired with traditional forms of treatment to help address a variety of conditions, including mental health conditions. Treatment delivered digitally can include brain-training exercises, cognitive behavioral therapy and behavioral reinforcement exercises. Some PDTs can also adapt based on usage. To be considered a true prescription digital therapeutic, the software must be authorized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which gives users greater confidence in its usage and outcomes. Prescription digital therapeutics offer an additional or alternative treatment. In addition to the potential positive implications for improving access to mental health treatment options among rural residents, there are some other potential advantages to prescription digital therapeutics: • Less likely to cause side effects. Because there are no additional medications involved, this form of therapy doesn’t carry the same risk of medicine-related side effects or drug interactions with other medications that the user may be taking. • Studied for safety and effectiveness. In order to qualify for FDA authorization, they are studied in clinical trials to verify their safety and effectiveness. • Convenient. Since PDTs are provided via a personal device, such as a smartphone or tablet, the patient can access treatment when and where it’s most convenient. • Private. The nature of a PDT means it’s delivered remotely, and patients can pursue treatment within their own homes or other private locations without the need to make regular visits to a doctor’s office. a risk factor for statin intolerance.
How to Lower Bad Cholesterol
Yes. Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of men and women in America and worldwide, killing more people than both cancer and accidents each year.
5. If a person is statin intolerant, are there other treatments available to help lower their uncontrolled LDL-C?
LDL cholesterol, commonly referred to as “bad” cholesterol, leads to plaque in your arteries, reducing blood flow and potentially damaging your cardiovascular system.
Yes. Alternative treatments are available for people with statin intolerance. A health care provider can help explain what options are available if you experience potential statin-associated side effects.
2. According to the American Heart Association, which of the following are true? • Men are more likely to have heart attacks at a younger age than women. • Women experience different symptoms indicating potential heart disease. • Women have a higher risk of fatality because their symptoms are frequently misunderstood or misdiagnosed, leading to delayed treatment. All are True. While many factors are at play, one major underlying issue is historically, women simply haven’t been well represented in clinical trials of heart-related con-
ditions. However, Harvard Health reports that culture is slowly changing and some of the gaps are starting to close. 3. Does statin intolerance mean statins are not effective? No. On the contrary, statins are the standard of care to lower LDL cholesterol. However, some people cannot take statins at any dose be-
cause of statin intolerance symptoms such as muscle pain, while others may have their LDL cholesterol remain uncontrolled because they are not able to take higher doses. 4. Are women more likely to be statin intolerant than men? Yes. According to the National Institutes of Health, being female is
6. Are muscle-related symptoms typically the most common side effect of statins? Yes. Muscle pains or cramps (myalgias) are the most common symptoms people experience. Your health care provider may run tests or change your medication to address these symptoms. For more information on statin intolerance, talk with your health care provider or visit statinalternatives.info.
If your bloodwork shows elevated LDL cholesterol levels, you can take steps to reduce it. 1. Eat a healthy diet low in saturated and trans fats and high in fiber, with an emphasis on fruits, vegetables and whole grains. 2. Get at least 30 minutes of exercise daily, and if you carry extra weight, work to lose it. 3. Talk to your health care provider about cholesterol-lowering medications, which can help lower bad cholesterol and reduce the risks associated with heart disease. How To Choose And Care For A Live Holiday Tree space:
Though artificial Christmas trees have come a long way, few things compare to the fresh scent and natural beauty of a live tree. Whether your family picks out a real tree as an annual tradition or this is your first time considering a live tree for the holidays, this guidance can help you choose the right one and care for it throughout the season. 1. Measure Your Space
Before you head to your local tree farm, measure the ceiling height where you plan to set up the tree, subtracting the amount of room your star or topper will account for. Similarly, measure the width to ensure the tree doesn’t encroach too much on furniture or traffic flow. 2. Choose the Right Tree While the options can be overwhelming once you’re among the field of available trees, consider what shape would fit best in your

Do you want a fuller or slimmer tree to fit a tighter space? Is a uniform shape without large gaps in the needles important or do you need stronger branches better equipped for hand l i n g heavier ornaments? Don’t forget to also consider trunk size – and consider bringing your stand with you to ensure your preferred tree fits – as trees with short or crooked trunks may be unstable. 3. Inspect for Freshness and Quality To ensure a safe, long-lasting, beautiful tree throughout the holidays, look at it from all angles and inspect the needles and branches. Needles should be green, not dry or brittle, and firmly attached to the branches, which should be flexible and not snap easily. If you run your hand through the branches and they break or needles fall off, it may be wise to look at other trees. Remember, if your tree has been cut too early, it may sit too long and dry out before Christ-
mas arrives, so try and buy your tree as close to setup time as possible.
4. Set Up with Care Before placing your tree in the stand, make a fresh cut about 1 inch from the base of the trunk to open the pores for water absorption. Place it away from heat sources – vents, fireplaces, direct sunlight – as they will dry it out faster. Remember to water daily (or at least check it daily), keeping the water level above the base of the trunk. 5. Plan for Disposal Once your tree has dried out – branches may be brittle and lots of
needles may have fallen off – it’s time to remove it. Remove all decorations then check to see if your city offers tree recycling or chipping service. Many offer these services for free for a limited time after the holidays but may require you to drop the tree off or cut it into smaller pieces for pick up. Set Yourself Up For Safe Winter Driving
Waiting for the first snow or ice storm to hit puts you and your tires behind the curve when it comes time to get behind the wheel. Preparing your vehicle and brushing up on smart winter driving tips helps ensure you arrive at your destination safely, no matter the weather. Consider Winter Tires When temperatures drop below 45 F, winter tires maintain flexibility and road grip, contrary to all-season tires that don’t perform as well in these conditions. Winter tires are designed for better traction and stopping power in ice, slush and snow. Change Out Seasonal Wheels and Rims Swapping summer or all-season tires for winter ones will ensure your vehicle has the best traction possible, but that’s just part of the
story. Slippery, wet and icy roads mean vehicles tend to skid and lose control, striking curbs and other objects that scratch, dent and scuff. Snow and winter wheels are a
smart way to protect summer rims from snow, ice and road-clearing chemicals like salt. Protect Offseason Tires It’s important to protect your offseason tires from below freezing
temperatures, sunlight, moisture and other harsh weather conditions. Consider Discount Tire’s T i r e Hotel service, available at select l o c a tions, where stores help preserve the condition of tires, handling tire rotations, inspections and maintenance when it’s time to change the winter tires back. Maintain Target Air Pressure
The impact changing temperatures have on your tire pressure can create numerous issues, including poor handling, worse gas mileage, excessive wear and overloading. Prevent problems by checking your air pressure at least once a month when your tires are cool and before any long trip. For every 10 F in ambient temperature change, tire air pressure changes 1 PSI (pound per square inch). That means you need to check your tires more frequently as temperatures fluctuate and settle into lower winter levels. Check Tread Depth Regularly Your vehicle’s tread depth plays a vital role in traction, which can affect your safety while driving in winter conditions. To ensure you have ample tread, stick a penny upside-down in a tread groove. It’s time to replace if Lincoln’s head is visible. You can also visit your local Discount Tire store for a free tire safety check.
Gen Z Turns The Houseplant Craze Into A Lifestyle Trend: Shops Thrive As Gen Z Continues To Nurture The ‘Plant Parent’ Trend Practice Good Tire Maintenance When Jessica Janik-De Gennaro started seeing her $20 succulents pop up between electronics and yoga pants on a mobile marketplace, she knew she’d found something unexpected.
than 500 species, from air plants and succulents to pet-friendly potted plants and rare tropicals.
The entrepreneur had been shipping plants nationwide since 2012, but joining Temu in 2024 opened an entirely new customer base.
After joining Temu in December 2024, sales on the platform rocketed. By May, it had become the company’s largest online channel, surpassing all other marketplaces.
“We saw growth right away,” said De Gennaro, the 43-year-old founder of Shop Succulents who sold 3,500 items on the platform in just four months. Her success reflects a broader trend: While many pandemic habits faded, America’s houseplant obsession only grew stronger. Spending on gardening-related items jumped 18.7% in 2020 – an $8.5 billion increase from the year before, and that momentum hasn’t stopped. The indoor plants market was valued at $20.68 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $30.25 billion by 2032, according
to industry research. “The potential for scaling is enormous,” De Gennaro said. “Seeing our $20 succulents next to Temu’s bargain electronics was surreal, but that’s the magic – the algorithm doesn’t discriminate. Our plants became ‘items to explore’ for people who never knew they wanted a spiky plant until it popped up between yoga pants and kitchenware.” Following a similar strategy, House Plant Shop’s inventory spans more
“Temu quickly became bigger for us than any other marketplace,” said Andy Burde, 33, founder of House Plant Shop. The platform’s young customer base has proven ideal for plant sellers. A survey by CraftJack found that 6 in 10 young Americans say “pets are the new kids, and plants are the new pets.”
The smaller plants, sold in 2-3inch pots and priced around $10 by House Plant Shop, have performed especially well. “They’re affordable, easy to ship and our customers love watching them grow,” Burde said. The shift to mobile commerce has been crucial to both companies’ success. With 76% of U.S. adults using smartphones to shop online, platforms like Temu have become discovery engines for impulse purchases, including houseplants. Now, House Plant Shop ranks among the top three live plant sellers on the mobile marketplace.
Taking care of your tires ensures you get the longest life and best wear. Most experts recommend rotating your tires every 6,000 miles. Knowing the age of your tires, which can be found by looking at the DOT number stamped on their sidewalls, is important since tire rubber becomes harder and more brittle as it ages, increasing the risk of failure. Choose Tires Wisely Selecting the tires that are best suited for where you drive, how you drive and what you drive helps protect you and your passengers, ensuring your vehicle is prepared for winter weather.
“Our goal is to become the No. 1 live plant seller on the platform,” Burde said. “We’ve found our second growth wave, and we’re excited to keep growing while staying true to our roots.”
When shopping, consider using an online tire guide like Treadwell, which provides personalized recommendations on the best tires for your driving needs. Find the tool online at DiscountTire.com/ Treadwell.

10 Doctor-Recommended Health Resolutions For 2026 With a new year ahead, the American Medical Association (AMA) is offering Americans 10 evidencebased tips for staying healthy in 2026 and beyond:
7 to 9 hours of quality sleep. Rest helps boost immunity and improve mental clarity. • Update vaccinations: Vaccinations remain the best defense against flu and other serious respiratory viruses. Since significant flu activity can stretch into May, it’s not too late to get a flu shot.
• Get health screenings: Schedule preventive visits, tests and screenings so your physician can catch conditions before they become more serious. • Manage stress: Mental health is part of overall health. Techniques such as meditation, deep breathing and yoga can help reduce stress. Ask for help from a mental health professional when you need it. • Be physically active: Start the year off by prioritizing physical activity. Strive for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity each week. If you have a sedentary lifestyle or primarily sit for long stretches at work, build in frequent breaks to stretch and move throughout your day. • Follow a healthy diet: Drink water instead of sugar-sweetened
beverages and eat nutritious, whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds, lowfat dairy products and lean proteins. Avoid unhealthy ultra-processed foods, especially those with high levels of added sodium, saturated fats and sugar. Drinking sugary beverages, even 100% fruit juice, is associated with a higher mortality risk, according to a study published in JAMA Network Open. • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water or other beverages composed
mostly of water, such as milk or herbal tea, to avoid dehydration and to keep your body functioning properly. Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired. Adult men should get about 15.5 cups of fluids a day and women should get 11.5 cups, according to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. • Get plenty of good sleep: To maintain your health and emotional well-being, most adults need
The AMA recommends vaccination as long as the threat of flu remains. Talk with your physician or other health care professional to determine which vaccines are right for you. To cut through vaccine confusion and have open, honest conversations with your physician, first go to the AMA website for evidence-based information. For help finding a flu vaccine in your area, visit GetMyFluShot.org. • Drink in moderation: If consuming alcohol, do so in moderation as defined by the U.S. Dietary Guidelines: up to one drink per day for women and two drinks for men, and only for adults of legal drinking age.
• Quit tobacco, nicotine and e-cigarettes: Ask your doctor or health care professional for resources and guidance to help quit smoking, vaping or using other nicotine products. Make your home and car smoke-free to eliminate secondhand smoke exposure. • Follow medication directions: When taking prescriptions, store them safely to prevent diversion or misuse, and properly dispose of any leftover medication. If you’re prescribed antibiotics, complete the full course to prevent antibiotic resistance. For more health tips and resources visit ama-assn.org. “With the holiday cookies eaten and those missed workouts officially last year’s worry, the new year is a great chance to refocus on the healthy choices you want to make in 2026,” said AMA president Dr. Bobby Mukkamala. “Even tiny changes now can snowball into major gains for your long-term health.” (StatePoint)
Outwit Scammers With These Smart Tips Scammers don’t take days off. From phishing emails to package theft, fraudsters and scammers can cost you money. Fortunately, you can stay one step ahead of them with these simple tips to help protect yourself. 1. Strengthen your online security: Safeguard your accounts by using unique, 12-character passwords and enabling multi-factor authentication whenever possible. Avoid using public Wi-Fi, such as free internet connectivity in coffee shops or libraries, where cyber criminals might be lurking to access your information. Instead, it’s safer to use your phone’s mobile hotspot. Be cautious of unsolicited emails or messages promising prizes or freebies — if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Block and report anything suspicious before deleting it. And ask your provider what
services they offer for safe browsing, such as Safe Browsing from TMobile 5G Home Internet to block malicious links. 2. Donate only to trusted charities: Before making charitable donations, check online reviews by looking up the organization and “complaint” or “scam,” or
use trusted resources like Charity Navigator. Be cautious with AIgenerated content where fraudsters may use AI tools to create convincing emails, websites and fundraising messages. Use a credit card instead of a debit card as they offer stronger fraud protections and don’t give scammers direct access to your bank account.
3. Use your wireless provider’s scam protection: Scammers often rely on robocalls and spoofed numbers to make calls look inviting to answer. Most providers have protection from robocalling and spoofing, including T-Mobile and Metro by TMobile, which give customers Scam Shield, a free feature that labels scam calls as “Scam Likely.” These calls can be blocked by dialing #662# or turning on Scam Block in the TLife app, giving users peace of mind. Lastly, forward suspicious texts to 7726. 4. Monitor deliveries and protect
packages: Mail and package theft happen all year round, especially as online shopping continues to grow. Track your shipments in real-time using delivery notifications and apps. Consider installing a smart door camera to monitor activity on your front porch. Many models offer live video feeds and motion detection, sending real-time alerts so you can quickly contact authorities if needed. 5. Stay informed and report suspicious activity: Stay updated on more tips and protections you can take with resources like T-Mobile’s Privacy Center and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). If you encounter suspicious or fraudulent activity, report it to the FTC at ftc. gov/complaint and the National Center for Disaster Fraud. By reporting scams, you can help protect others and reduce the spread of fraudulent schemes. (StatePoint)

Keep Your Home Warm and Safe During Cold Fronts
Cold fronts come on fierce and fast. And when they do, having a trusted space heater can keep your living spaces cozy and comfortable, and your energy bills in check. Survive and thrive this winter’s polar vortexes, Arctic blasts, cold fronts and blizzards with these electric heater tips: Prioritize safety: A high-quality space heater will not only deliver reliable, long-lasting performance, it will also be engineered with your well-being in mind. If you’ve ever hesitated to bring a space heater into your home, keep in mind that many of the latest models have been specially engineered to prioritize safety. Every heater from Lasko, the number one heater brand in the United States, feature smart safeguards, such as overheat protection, tip-over safety switch-
es, and cool touch housing, for ultimate peace of mind. They’re also available at major retailers and online, so you can also find them on demand before the temperatures plunge. Choose the right model for your needs: Finding the right model for
your needs is important. For example, if portability is a priority because you intend to use one space heater in different rooms, consider the Lasko 22” Ceramic Tower Heater (CT22495), available at Home Depot, which has an easy-grip handle and a 6-foot power cord for flexibility, plus optional oscillation for full room coverage. Its child lock, along with its safety rollover design, make it a good option for
those with little ones. To warm up larger living spaces, opt for a model that utilizes widespread oscillation to ensure consistent and comfortable heat distribution throughout the room, such as the Lasko 22” Oscillating Ceramic Tower Space Heater (CT22850), available at Walmart. With four comfort settings, and an adjustable thermostat, it’s well-suited for anyone seeking personalized temperature control. Eco-friendly and cost-effective, both models offer Auto Eco Mode, which will maintain the selected room temperature by automatically adjusting heat output to deliver consistent comfort while reducing energy use. Position electric heaters properly:
Keep electric heaters away from areas where they can be harmed by water or dampness, or, use heaters specially designed for rooms like bathrooms and laundry rooms, which feature safeguards for moist spaces. You should also place typical space heaters a foot or two from the wall. For tighter spaces, consider a model with intake and exhaust vents on the front of the unit so it can be placed at the wall. No matter what, position your electric heater away from flammable materials, and establish a three-foot buffer zone between the heater and foot traffic. As you face cold fronts this winter, don’t settle for anything less than ultimate comfort. A great space heater is ideal for warming up your home safely and reliably. (StatePoint)

The report also highlighted a growing trend among global Indians who are using international investing platforms not only to access overseas markets but also to invest back into India, creating a two-way global capital perspective. According to the findings, 48 per cent of global investors are under 35 and 38 per cent start with less
than $500. Investors hold about eight stocks on average. ‘Nvidia’, ‘Tesla’, ‘Apple’, ‘Meta Platforms’, ‘Alphabet’ and ‘Microsoft’ are among top stocks they choose. While 68 per cent prefer investment in stocks, 24 per cent opt for ETFs, 7 per cent for cash and 1 per cent in global funds. Around 61 per cent of investors invest in both stocks and ETFs. Around 38 per cent of investors increase allocation to global markets in their portfolio within the first year. Broadening access to research, digital tools, and education has played a critical role in shaping this shift, especially in cities beyond metros, the report noted. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella donated $3.5 million. In return, he was invited to Trump’s swearing in ceremony and granted regular access through private dinners. Microsoft also benefited from administration policies that restricted US states from enforcing their own artificial intelligence regulations, easing the company’s compliance burden. Google CEO Sundar Pichai donated $1.2 million. The administration later settled a lawsuit Trump had personally brought against
administration policies strongly favoring domestic chipmakers, including public backing and regulatory decisions that aligned closely with the company’s business interests. Google after the company agreed to contribute $24.5 million toward Trump’s ballroom project, ending a legal dispute that had hung over the company. Anjani Sinha, a Bihari orthopedic surgeon, emerged as a major non tech donor. Considered unqualified for the job, a donation earned the office of the US ambassador to Singapore, despite objections raised during confirmation hearings. Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen donated $1 million. He received direct access to Trump, including invitations to private dinners and overseas trips, placing him among a small circle of corporate executives with personal reach to the president. Micron Technology CEO Sanjay Mehrotra donated $1 million. Micron benefited from Trump
IBM CEO Arvind Krishna donated $750,000. Like other top tech donors, he received privileged access to the president through exclusive events and meetings unavailable to non donors. The New York Times found nearly 200 high level donors received tangible benefits such as pardons, dropped or softened legal action, favorable policy decisions, government contracts, or senior appointments. The Trump administration has denied any quid pro quo, but the investigation highlights the unprecedented scale of post inauguration fundraising and the repeated alignment between large donations and presidential action. How Workplaces Can Better Support Employees Facing Domestic Violence Employers can provide meaningful support to their workers when they face domestic or sexual violence, but a new survey finds most are unprepared to do so. The majority of survivors of domestic violence report that they were in the workforce when the violence occurred, and four in five (79%) say it made it more difficult for them to stay in their jobs. Yet doing so – and maintaining their income – is essential for many trying to create a safe and stable future. The Intersection of Work and Abuse, a new report, highlights the results of a 2025 online survey of more than 2,000 survivors of domestic and dating violence, sexual assault and/or stalking, conducted by the National Domestic Violence
ation, or lose their job, if they did. When survivors did go to their employer for help, often the outcome wasn’t good: • Less than half (43%) report their employer protected their confidentiality; • Three in ten (30%) say their employer shared ways they could get help; • Two in ten (19%) say their employer let them use paid vacation time to address the problem; and Hotline and Futures Without Violence. It finds that more than half of domestic violence survivors did

INDIA’S AMAZING CONTRIBUTION TO THE WORLD SINCE LAST 3500 YEARS By: Chaitanya Davé A very ancient civilization, India consists of vast land brimming with creative and talented people of highly diverse backgrounds.
quest, and the migration of people and ideas spanning centuries after centuries. World’s First University, Takshashila: As early as 500 to 700 B.C., there existed a giant University at Takshashila, located in the northwest region of India. It had 300 lecture halls, laboratories, a massive library and a towering observatory for astronomical research.
Over thousands of years, India has given to the world a vast array of amazing things that this world is using and benefitting ever since. For several thousand years in the ancient period, India’s influence extended far beyond its borders. “India is the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of human speech, the mother of history, the grandmother of legend, and the great-grandmother of tradition. Our most valuable and most instructive materials in the history of man are treasured up in India only.”—Mark Twain, the American author “We owe a lot to the Indians, who taught us how to count, without which no worthwhile scientific discovery could have been made.”— Albert Einstein, scientist “This extraordinary period lasts from 250 BC to 1200 AD The whole world is looking at India, in terms of stories, language, math, science and astronomy. But the miracle of miracles is that this hap-
pens not through military force.... It happened through trade and sheer power and sophistication of the Indian civilization,” William Dalrymple, the British author of many books, told the audience on the fifth day of the Coal India Kolkata Literary Meet 2025, in association with The Telegraph, on January 25. “Empires of the sword are very common in history. Empires of the spirit are very rare. That is why I look on this as an extraordinary and thrilling moment in world civilization,” he said. India’s contribution to the world since last thousands of years is unparalleled in history. Its contribu-
tions across science, mathematics, culture, medicine, etc., including the invention of the decimal system and the concept of zero, the foundation for modern algebra and trigonometry, the ancient medical practice of Ayurveda, the sport of chess, the game of snakes and ladders, the discovery of diamonds and early steel manufacturing (Wootz steel), cotton textiles, and spiritual traditions like yoga. Other innovations include the first flush toilets, the development of planned cities with sewer systems, as seen at Mohenjo-Daro and the invention of the spinning wheel India’s foundational contributions have influenced global civilization. Its ancient and medieval innovations spread through trade, con-
Nalanda University, founded in 427 CE, was the greatest center of learning in the world at the time and had students from around the world from the 5th century CE to 1200 CE. It housed around 10,000 students-including many from other countries--, and 2000 professors as seen from the diary of Chinese traveler, Hien Tsang. Students came from all over the world to learn. As per BBC, it was home to 9 million books. It taught wide range of subjects such as medicine, logic, mathematics, science, astronomy, Buddhism, Vedic studies, grammar, and arts. Students engaged in debates, promoting a culture of critical thinking. Science, Mathematics and Astronomy: India’s contributions to mathematics and astronomy were outstanding.
and help. “That’s a lost opportunity, both for the people experiencing violence who need support and for the businesses that want to keep workers they need and value,” said Futures Without Violence Vice President Ana López Van Balen. “This study should be a call to action for workplace leaders.” “The fact that we now know so many victims are actively in the workforce while experiencing abuse represents a significant opportunity for intervention and support,” added National Domestic Violence Hotline Policy Director Dorian Karp. Everyone can advocate for better programs and policies at their workplace. Futures Without Violence runs the Workplaces Respond to Domestic & Sexual Violence National Resource Center, which offers a wealth of resources for employers, survivors of violence, co-workers and advocates. And the new study offers a series of recommendations for employers, including: • Invest in training and education to help ensure managers and human resources leaders are prepared to support workers facing violence; • Adopt survivor-centered policies such as paid leave, flexible accommodation, and reasonable adjustments to schedules and assignments for those facing violence; and • Partner with domestic violence and sexual assault programs, which can help with these initiatives. To learn more, and to access workplace resources for both survivors and employers, visit www.futureswithoutviolence.org and www. thehotline.org. Domestic and sexual violence can threaten the economic security of survivors and their families and undermine the success of businesses. By providing better support, employers can help create a safer, more stable and successful future. (StatePoint)

Trump Unveils $1Million Gold Card Named After Himself
WASHINGTON, DC – President Donald Trump released the “Trump Gold Card” that he said would allow companies to retain top graduates from American universities, including thousands from India. He described the existing system that forces skilled talent to leave after completing their studies as “ridiculous.” Speaking at a White House roundtable with leading technology CEOs on December 10, Trump said the initiative would give firms “certainty” in hiring highly trained international students, many of whom face years-long immigration hurdles despite graduating at the top of their class. “You graduate, number one from your college, and there’s no way of guaranteeing… there’s no way of guaranteeing that they’re able to stay in the country,” he said. “They have to go back to India, they have to go back to China, they have to go back to France.”
tain an employee who undergoes “full vetting, the best vetting the government has ever done.” He said the vetting process would cost $15,000 and ensure the candidate “absolutely qualify to be an American, absolutely qualify.”
Calling the existing system “a shame,” Trump said the Gold Card would remove a long-standing barrier for American companies competing globally for scientific and engineering talent. “It’s a ridiculous thing that we’re taking care of,” he noted, adding that CEO complaints, particularly from Apple’s Tim Cook, had motivated the change. “Nobody talked to me
more about it than Tim Cook. He said it’s a real — it’s a real problem.” Howard Lutnick, introduced by Trump to outline the programme, said individuals could obtain the Gold Card for $1 million, while corporations could purchase one for $2 million. For companies, the card would allow them to re-
Once approved, the employee would have a path to citizenship after five years, Lutnick said. A company could then “put someone else on the card,” enabling firms to rotate foreign employees through long-term, employmentlinked residency. “It’s a gift to the United States of America… to help America be great again under Donald Trump,” he added.
The roundtable brought together a group of influential technology chiefs, including Michael Dell of Dell Technologies, Arvind Krishna of IBM, Cristiano Amon of Qualcomm, and leaders from HP and Hewlett Packard Enterprise, as the administration sought to highlight the intersection of immigration reform, workforce competitiveness, and a broader push for US technology “dominance.” While the CEOs did not directly address immigration policy, they underscored the need for a stable workforce and low-cost energy to support massive semiconductor and AI investments. Dell said AI and chip manufacturing “consume a great deal of power” and praised the administration’s focus on lowering energy costs. Krishna called for strengthening the full AI “stack,” saying it included “semiconductors… software… systems… and the software applications on top.” (IANS) (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)
What Moms Want In 2026: Child Care Investments And Safety For Kids For years, young families have struggled to find quality affordable child care—a problem created by long-term lack of government investments and exacerbated by the pandemic and inflation. Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen called the nation’s child care system “a textbook example of a broken market.” Thousands of programs have closed in recent years and for those still operating, prices are high and waitlists long. Now, intensified immigration enforcement is creating new pressure on this already-fragile system. Immigrants are essential to the care workforce, making up 20% of child care workers, including 26% of center-based child care providers and early educators, and 23% of preschool teachers, according to the Center for Law and Social Policy. Young families in particular depend on these care workers, but advocates say they can’t stay in their jobs when they are living in fear, detained or deported. The Better
structure that families depend on to work, provide, and thrive—and are undermining our economy.”
Life Lab reports the sharp increase in ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) activity starting in January 2025 has already resulted in roughly 39,000 fewer foreignborn child care workers nationwide and 77,000 fewer mothers of preschool-aged children in the workforce. “When child care programs are forced to reduce capacity or close, the harm is extensive. Parents are
forced to leave much-needed jobs, businesses can’t recruit employees they need, kids go without early education opportunities that help them thrive, and more children go hungry and without health care,” said MomsRising Executive Director and CEO Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner. “Families, communities, small businesses, and our economy suffer. Unfortunately, the Trump administration’s immigration policies are destabilizing the care infra-
Growing evidence shows the Trump administration’s immigration policies are also traumatizing the children and families these educators serve. News stories have documented immigration raids outside child care and afterschool programs and even inside schools. In Chicago, a child care worker was arrested outside Rayito de Sol Early Learning Center in front of families. In Charlotte, the ourBRIDGE for KIDS afterschool program closed for days when ICE agents amassed outside of it. And school systems across the country are reporting steep, alarming drops in student attendance. Seeing these actions, or losing a loved and trusted teacher or friend, traumatizes all the children affected, not just the people authorities are targeting, advocates and concerned parents say. That’s why
a growing number of mothers, educators, medical professionals, and others are asking the Trump administration to reinstate the longstanding policy that protected churches, schools and hospitals from immigration enforcement. Congress is also considering the Protecting Sensitive Locations Act, which would prohibit immigration enforcement at child care centers, schools, hospitals, churches and other sensitive spaces. To learn more, visit www.momsrising.org. “Child care is essential to the country’s success, and immigrant caregivers help keep child care programs open, educating our children, and supporting communities,” Rowe-Finkbeiner added. “Our nation needs a safe and orderly immigration process that balances compassion and security, not cruelty. Children should never be made to feel unsafe.” (StatePoint)

INDIA’S AMAZING CONTRIBUTION TO THE WORLD SINCE LAST 3500 YEARS (Continued From Page 16). Ancient Indian scholars demonstrated remarkable precision and insight in mathematical and astronomical studies, advances that would only be appreciated by the West centuries later. Ancient Indian mathematicians and astronomers like Aryabhata and Brahmagupta laid the groundwork for modern mathematics and astronomy with concepts such as zero and accurate planetary calculations. Aryabhata and Bhaskara made advances in understanding planetary movements and eclipses. Aryabhata accurately calculated the Earth’s rotation very precisely and conceptualized Earth’s heliocentric orbit—while the Western civilizations were still debating or believing that the earth was flat. The concept of zero and the decimal system: Indian mathematician Aryabhata-(476-550 AD) is credited with creating the first symbol for zero around 498 A.D., which enabled sophisticated mathematical operations. The use of zero and a place-value system simplified calculations, laid the groundwork for modern science and computing. In fact, without zero, much of modern mathematics, physics, and even computer science would simply not be possible. Aryabhata formalized the decimal system, making calculations more efficient and laying the foundation for algebra and calculus. In fact, without zero, much of modern mathematics, physics, and even computer science would simply not be possible. Even the crucial numbers from 1 to 9 were given to the world by India. • Numeral notation: The 1-9 numeral system, often mistakenly called Arabic numerals, was developed in India around 500 BCE. It was later adopted by Arab merchants and carried to the Western world. Early calculus, trigonometry and
lonial powers later dismissed Ayurveda as “folk medicine,” only to rebrand and reintroduce the principles of herbal and holistic medicine in the West.
Algebra: Ancient Indians were among the first to work with trigonometric functions, such as sine and cosine, which became foundational in trigonometry and calculus. Concepts in trigonometry developed by mathematicians like Bhaskara II influenced mathematics globally. Advanced concepts in algebra, trigonometry, and calculus, such as sine and cosine, were developed by Indian mathematicians like Aryabhata and Brahmagupta (598-668 AD), centuries before their adoption in Europe. • Astronomy: Ancient Indian astronomers correctly proposed that the Earth is round and rotates on its own axis. They also accurately calculated the length of the solar year. • Atomic theory: The ancient Indian philosopher Kanada speculated on the existence of anu, or indestructible particles, which resembled the atom, centuries before John Dalton’s work. Many of these texts and discoveries made their way to the West over time, sometimes “borrowed” without attribution, and reappeared under other names. Sadly, much of this ancient knowledge suffered when invaders, such as Bakhtiyar Khilji, a Muslim Turko-Afghan Military General, destroyed the renowned Nalanda University in the 12th century, burning invaluable manuscripts on mathematics and astronomy.
which shows various surgical procedures, including cataract surgery, skin grafting, and even rhinoplasty. This showed a deep understanding of human anatomy and surgery. • Ayurveda: Ayurvedic medicine consists of preventative care and seeks to maintain balance within the body utilizing herbs, dietary practices, and yoga. Its approach to health and wellness aligns remarkably well with modern holistic practices, showing their advanced understanding of disease prevention and health maintenance. • Deep Knowledge of Medicinal Plants: Ayurveda is based on extensive knowledge of medicinal
Despite these losses, ancient Indian mathematics continues to serve as the backbone of much of modern science—a fact often glossed over in history books.
Today, we witness wellness industries profiting from “holistic health” techniques rooted in Ayurveda, a testament to the timelessness of India’s medical wisdom that was forcibly ignored but could never be erased. Non-Violence: India gave to the world the value of non-violence. The greatest apostles of non-violence were Buddha(Buddhism) and Mahavira(Jainism). Buddhism and its wonderful message spread around the world. In modern times, Mahatma Gandhi proved to the world the value of non-violence. He showed the world how to achieve independence from the British by non-violence means, a unique way never applied before. Even Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who was inspired by Gandhi, followed Gandhi’s principles effectively using non-violence in his successful movement for civil rights in America.
Medicine and Ayurveda: Pioneer in Holistic Health: Ancient Indian civilization was highly advanced in medicine, notably Ayurveda, a holistic system of natural healing. It was practiced for 3000 years. It is still widely respected and practiced for its holistic approach to human health.
plants and their use, as found in the Charaka Samhita. These ancient Indian texts on herbal medicine and natural remedies reveal an advanced understanding of botany, mineralogy, and the environment’s role in health.
Cultural and Literary Master Pieces: India’s classical music, classical dances are immensely popular around the world. Kalidas (4th-5th Century CE) the ancient Indian Sanskrit poet and playwright’s ‘Shakuntala’ was his classic play loved by millions of people.
• Surgical Techniques: Sushruta, known as the “father of surgery,” compiled the Sushruta Samhita,
Unfortunately, during the invasions, much of this medical knowledge was lost or dismissed. Co-
India gave to the world, epic stories such as Ramayana, composed around 500 BCE to 100 BCE con-
sisting about 24000 verses and Mahabharat, composed around 400 BCE to 400 CE, consisting of 100,000 verses. It was India’s genius that gave to the world such epic works of literature. Sanskrit, the mother of all languages: A highly systematic and technical language in the world, whose roots can be traced back to over 5000 years ago. Sanskrit has exerted significant influence in shaping the culture, religion, and traditions of India. Sanskrit is considered to be the mother of all languages because many of the world’s languages, including English, Latin, and Greek, have heavily borrowed words and grammar rules from Sanskrit. All European languages are called Indo-European languages. Philosophy and Spirituality: Ancient Indian Hindu Scriptures formed thousands of years ago, like Vedas-(1500 BCE to 1000 BCE) Upanishads-(900BCE-300 BCE) and Bhagavat Gita-(400BCE) exerted tremendous influence not only on hundreds of millions of Indians but on many western thinkers and philosophers. Even todays’ neuroscience is proving the existence of soul in every living creature, the eternal truth which was discovered by Indian rishis thousands of years ago and was revealed in above scriptures. India’s philosophical traditions, from the Vedas and Upanishads to the teachings of Mahavir and the Buddha, have emphasized values like peace, compassion, and religious tolerance. Historically, India has provided refuge for persecuted groups like the Parsis and Jews. Medicine and public health • Ayurveda: This ancient system of medicine, which originated in India over 3,000 years ago, focuses on holistic healing and the balance of mind, body, and spirit. Many of its herbal remedies and therapeutic practices are still used today. (Continued On Page 19)

INDIA’S AMAZING CONTRIBUTION TO THE WORLD SINCE LAST 3500 YEARS origins in India. The finest wool – cashmere wool – came from the Kashmir region of India and was widely used for making Woolen shawls. India also pioneered jute and cotton cultivation.
(Continued From Page 18) • Surgical techniques: The ancient Indian physician Sushruta is regarded as a father of surgery. He authored one of the world’s first medical texts detailing surgical procedures like rhinoplasty (nose reconstruction), cataract removal, and other complex operations. • Planned cities and sanitation: The Indus Valley civilization, dating back 5,000 years, featured sophisticated urban planning, with each house having its own bathroom and access to an advanced sewage and drainage system. Religion and philosophy Birthplace of major religions: India has given to the world some of its greatest religions: Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism. Each of them has eternal spiritual truths, deep meaning, and a unique way of life. Millions around the world follow these religions. Buddhism, which was started by the great man Buddha in the 6th century, spread like a wildfire around the world, especially in China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Burma, Japan, Sri Lanka and Singapore. • Yoga and meditation: These physical and mental disciplines originated in ancient India and are now practiced worldwide for their health and wellness benefits. • Chess & other Games: The precursor to modern chess, chaturanga, originated in India during the Gupta dynasty around the 6th century CE. Other board games like moksha patam, which became Snakes and Ladders, also originated in India. Another interesting game is Kabaddi which originated in India since ancient times. It has received lot of international exposure today. • World’s Leading Democracy: As the world’s largest democracy, India has shown that democratic

Also, since ancient times, India has been growing jute (a plant fiber) and exporting raw jute to the West. institutions can function and countries can grow despite immense diversity. • Scientific and Technological Advancements: In modern times, India has produced pioneering scientists and innovators, such as Satyendra Nath Bose (quantum mechanics), Sir C. V. Raman (physics), and Narinder Singh Kapany (father of fiber optics) • Man-made Marvels: Ancient Indian builders constructed unbelievable structures, built centuries ago: Taj Mahal, Khajuraho, Ajanta-Ellora, Kailas Temple, Meenaxi Temple, Konark Temple, just to name a few. • Indian Nobel Laureates: India has a total of nine Nobel Prize laureates from 1913 to 2024. The first Indian to achieve this prestigious honor was Rabindranath Tagore, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1913 for his exceptionally moving, original and exquisite poetry. The total Nobel Prize laureates of India are as follows: • Literature: Rabindranath Tagore (1913) • Physics: C. V. Raman (1930), Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar (1983) • Physiology or Medicine: Har Gobind Khorana (1968) • Peace: Mother Teresa (1979), Kailash Satyarthi (2014) • Economics: Amartya Sen (1998), Abhijit Banerjee (2019) Global workforce: Indian doctors, engineers, and IT specialists have
made significant contributions in countries around the world. Wireless Communication: This invention has revolutionized the way we communicate. While Western historians credit Guglielmo Marconi with inventing the wireless radio communication, it was Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose who was the first person who demonstrated the use of radio waves for communication publicly back in 1895, exactly two years before Marconi gave a similar demo in England. In other words, Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose invented wireless communication technology, which enables people to communicate quickly and transmit information over a distance without the need for electrical conductors, wires or cables. Pentium Chip: The Pentium Chip was invented by an Indian named Vinod dham who was known as the father of Pentium Chip for his contribution of highly successful Pentium processors from Intel. Sugar: India gave candied sugar to the world. By the time of Guptas, the process of producing crystallized sugar was discovered. Buddhist monks took this knowledge to China. Chinese documents confirm of two missions to India to learn about the technology for sugar-refining. Natural Fibers: All products made from natural fibers, such as cotton, Jute and wool, all have their
Diamond Mining: Diamonds were first recognized and mined in central India, where significant alluvial deposits of the stone could then be found along the rivers Penner, Krishna and Godavari. India remained the world’s only source of diamonds until the discovery of diamonds in Brazil in the 18th century. Metallurgy and Engineering, Technology That Endured Millenia: Ancient Indian civilization’s expertise in metallurgy and engineering remains a marvel to this day. Their advancements in metallurgy, particularly ironwork, reveal a society with deep scientific knowledge. Cataract surgery: Cataract surgery was first performed in India with a curved needle used to loosen the lens and push the cataract out of the field of vision. Later, the eye would be soaked with warm butter and then bandaged. Though the method was successful, Susruta cautioned that cataract surgery should only be performed only when absolutely necessary. These methods were later spread to the world. Cure for Leprosy: As per Kearns & Nash (2008), the first mention of
leprosy is described in the Indian medical treatise Sushruta Samhita (6th century BCE). Even Atharva Veda (1500-1200 BCE) mentions of leprosy and its ritualistic cures. Shampoo: It originated in India. The word shampoo comes from Hindi word chāmpo and dates back to 1762. Shampoo originated in the eastern regions of the Mughal Empire where it was introduced as a head massage, usually consisting of natural oils, alkali and fragrances. It was first introduced in Britain by a Bengali entrepreneur from Bihar named Sake Dean Mahomed. Buttons: Indians were the first ones to invent and use buttons. Indus Valley Civilization by 2000 BCE were using ornamental buttons made from seashells; some having various geometric shapes with holes in them. Few countries can match India’s amazing contribution to the world in so many diverse fields spanning thousands of years. Unfortunately, the West has failed to give enough credit to India and its genius. Chaitanya Davé is an author, engineer and a businessman. He has authored three books: CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY: A Shocking Record of US Crimes since 1776-2007, COLLAPSE: Civilization on the Brink-2010, CAPITALISM’S MARCH OF DESTRUCTION: Replacing it with People and Nature-Friendly Economy-2020. The Holiday Spirit Matters But So Does What Happens After
During the holiday season, many people feel a renewed sense of generosity. It’s a time when communities come alive with food drives, toy collections, volunteer events and donation campaigns – all fueled by the spirit of giving.
This holiday season and beyond, to assist your community consider taking actions such as:
Volunteering Offering your time is one way to make a real change in your community while helping build a more resilient future for all. What’s more, research shows the personal benefits of volunteering, such as reduced feelings of isolation, loneliness and risk of depression. Whether it’s a community event, ongoing support or in-person activities, making a difference for others feels good.
While this seasonal energy can be powerful, the need it responds to doesn’t fade when the decorations come down. Giving back is not only essential during the holidays; it’s also the foundation of stronger, more resilient communities year round. People in nearly every community face challenges – whether it’s affording holiday presents or meeting basic needs like food, rent and utilities. For many families, current economic strains are forcing them to make tough decisions like sacrificing necessities or depleting savings to create moments of holiday joy.
now, many community members who didn’t previously need help are seeking support. Acts of generosity large and small help close gaps and strengthen communities. When individuals and businesses give their time, resources and talent, they can help ensure everyone has a fair chance to not only survive but thrive.
This is a time to rally support and help neighbors in need. Right
Communities rely on nonprofit organizations like United Way – one
of the oldest and largest organizations committed to tackling local challenges and mobilizing communities to improve lives. With a presence in nearly 99% of communities across the U.S., the organization recognizes the power of giving and relies on seasonal and year-round generosity to deliver food and housing assistance, youth programs, mental health support, disaster recovery and more.
Donating Sharing your financial resources can play a vital role in helping communities thrive. Your donation can help put food on the table for families in need, support kids who are struggling or provide mental health services to the most vulnerable individuals. IDEAYA
My name is Srinidhi, and I am currently a high school student who has been deeply impacted by my involvement with IDEAYA.
especially those in our Austin and South Asian communities—to get involved. Whether through volunteering, spreading the word, or donating, every effort truly matters.
It wasn’t until I became part of this organization that I truly understood the life-changing power of community support. IDEAYA—Immigrants for Development and Education of Austin Youth AID, Inc.— is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization established in 2010, dedicated to helping students achieve their educational goals through scholarships and mentorship. This year, I had the privilege of assisting with IDEAYA’s annual scholarship award ceremony. In 2025, IDEAYA awarded seven scholarships, five of which were received in person at the ceremony. Watching students walk up to the stage— some the first in their families to pursue higher education, others balancing jobs, hardships, or cultural expectations—left me both speechless and deeply inspired. Many of these students are continuing their
education at institutions such as IBEW-NECA and Austin Electrical JATC, preparing themselves for skilled careers and stable futures. IDEAYA does more than provide financial support; it gives students confidence and belief in their own potential. What makes this organization especially impactful is that 100% of donations go directly toward scholarships. All overhead costs are kept minimal and are covered entirely by volunteers, ensuring that every contribution makes a direct difference in a student’s life.
IDEAYA is presently run by dedicated community leaders: Mr. Srinivas Aduri, Mr. Laxman Kaparthy, Ms. Lata Narumanchi, Mrs. Kumar R. Samineni, and Mrs. Radhika Venkata Subramanyan. Their leadership and commitment have allowed IDEAYA to continue empowering students and strengthening our community year after year. For every student who receives a scholarship, there are many more with dreams just as bright but fewer resources to pursue them. That is why I want to encourage others—
Those who wish to donate—any amount, according to your budget and your heart—may make a check payable to IDEAYA Inc. and mail or deposit it to: United Heritage Credit Union P.O. Box 1648 Austin, TX 78767-1648 IDEAYA has shown me what true community looks like: people coming together to make opportunity possible. If you feel moved by these stories, I encourage you to support IDEAYA’s mission. Together, we can help more students step onto that stage, receive a scholarship, and take their next step toward a brighter future.
ISRO To Launch American Satellite NEW DELHI- The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will launch the 6.5-tonne BlueBird-6 satellite of the US on December 15.
bit at nearly 2,400 square feet.
The BlueBird 6 communications satellite, developed by the US-based AST SpaceMobile, will be launched on board India’s most powerful rocket, LVM3.
This is the second collaboration between the US and ISRO. In July, the ISRO successfully launched the billion NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar Mission (NISAR), aimed at taking high-resolution Earth scans with a capacity to penetrate through fogs, dense clouds, and ice layers.
It is one of the heaviest commercial satellites, weighing tones. The Low Earth Orbit satellite arrived in India from the US on October 19. “BlueBird 6, a US-licensed satellite, is scheduled to launch on December 15th from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in India,” the company said in a statement. “When launched, it will feature the largest commercial phased array in low Earth or-
This represents a 3.5 times increase in size over BlueBirds 1-5 and supports 10 times the data capacity,” it added.
“NISAR, launched on July 30, was jointly realized by NASA, JPL, and ISRO. It was the costliest satellite ever realized in the world, and was lifted off by the Indian launcher GSLV and placed perfectly in orbit,” V. Narayanan, ISRO Chairman, shared after the launch. Weighing 2,392 kilograms, the satellite will scan the Earth’s landmass and ice-covered surfaces every 12 days with high-resolution imagery over a 242-kilometre swath, utilizing SweepSAR technology for the first time. WASHINGTON, DC -Defense cooperation, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies are likely to anchor the next phase of India-United States engagement as the two sides seek to sustain momentum in strategic sectors despite unresolved political and trade challenges, a senior policy expert said.
This book shares the powerful words spoken by Martin Luther King Jr. on August 28, 1963, during the March on Washington at the Lincoln Memorial. His famous speech is paired with beautiful illustrations that bring his message to life for both children and adults. The themes of equality and freedom are still important today and help young readers learn about a meaningful moment in American history. Martin Luther King Day is on January 19th, 2026. Lunar New Year In the story, readers follow Ling, her sister Mei, and their granny Po Po as they prepare for Lunar New Year together. Readers learn about the celebration through the family’s experiences, from special foods to meaning-
Dhruva Jaishankar, Executive Director of the Observer Research Foundation America, and son of India’s External Affairs Minister S.Jaishankar, noted that while high-level political engagement has faced constraints, cooperation in defense, technology, and energy has continued to advance. This progress provides a foundation for stabilizing bilateral ties in 2026. He observed some stabilization in the relationship, pointing out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump spoke at least four times between mid-September and the end of the year. Practical cooperation has continued even during periods of political strain, evidenced by fruitful agreements on defense and energy. Jaishankar described defense as one of the most resilient pillars of the partnership. Military-to-military engagement has expanded through exercises involving all three services, joint training programmes, and ongoing sales. The challenge historically has
The most promising opportunities now lie in advanced and niche capabilities rather than legacy platforms. Jaishankar identified cutting-edge technologies like autonomous underwater systems and counter-drone capabilities as areas of interest. In these domains, India has operational requirements while the United States remains at the technological frontier. He cautioned that progress will depend heavily on private-sector engagement rather than just government-to-government agreements. Artificial intelligence represents another area of growing engagement, though expectations are not yet fully aligned. India is focused on the rapid deployment of AI applications for public benefit and commercial viability. The United States, by contrast, prioritizes leadership in developing cutting-edge AI applications. Despite differing objectives, major technology firms including Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI have made significant investments in India, reflecting confidence in its digital ecosystem. Regarding the Quad, Jaishankar said political-level momentum has lagged with the leaders’ summit repeatedly deferred, but working-level engagement remains active. This includes counter-terrorism meetings and maritime exercises. Looking ahead, he said progress on trade and tariffs will be critical to unlocking higher-level political engagement. He expressed cautious optimism that some resolution could emerge later in 2026, potentially around the time the US hosts the G20 summit. (IANS) (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)

Dharmendra, One of Bollywood’s Top Leading Men, Dies at 89
By Jin Yu Young and Pragati K.B. Dharmendra, a Bollywood actor of easygoing machismo who became one of India’s most versatile stars, playing swoon-worthy romantic leads, flashy action heroes and witty comics in a career spanning nearly seven decades, died on Monday in Mumbai. He was 89. The cause was not immediately clear, but he had been in and out of the hospital recently with ailments, according to local news media outlets that reported his death. His family was not available to comment. Dharmendra, nicknamed He-Man for his rugged appeal, appeared in more than 300 productions. He started in romance dramas aimed at mostly female audiences in the early 1960s but soon shifted to male-oriented action fare, which remained one of his primary genres amid forays into comedy. His best-remembered films included “Phool Aur Patthar” (1966), in which he played a virile but softhearted criminal; “Mera Gaon Mera Desh” (1971), in which his character transforms from a thief to village protector; “Chupke Chupke” (1975), a blockbuster romantic comedy of errors in which he portrayed a professor who disguises himself as a driver as part of an elaborate practical joke; and “Sholay” (1975), an action-adventure in which he played one of two petty criminals, the other portrayed by Amitabh Bachchan, hired by a retired policeman to capture a ruthless villain. “Sholay” was a blockbuster that enjoyed a “silver jubilee” run, meaning it was shown for 25 weeks straight in more than 100 theaters across India. Celebrating friendship and camaraderie, the film has gained cult status in Hindi cinema for its memorable dialogue and songs.
This month, the entertainment journalist Rajiv Vijayakar, who wrote a biography of the actor, said in an interview, “There’s no role he cannot do,” adding, “You cannot slot him into a pigeonhole.” By Dharmendra’s own telling, he was least comfortable when asked to dance, although by most accounts he acquitted himself admirably in “Pratiggya” (1975), in which he created impromptu steps. “I used to tell the director bluntly that I don’t understand the meaning of dance,” he told the Indian newspaper The Sunday Guardian. “I used to catch the rhythm. I did my own thing, and the dance steps became famous.” Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol was born on Dec. 8, 1935, in the Punjab region of British-ruled India. He grew up in the village of Sahnewal, where his father was a school headmaster. Dharmendra said he was mesmerized as a child watching “Shaheed,” a 1948 romantic drama set amid Indian independence and starring Dilip Kumar. It made him want to become an actor, he said. “My big dream and prayer to God was my pictures being there everywhere, just like my idols were seen all over,” he told Mr. Vijayakar in a 2009 newspaper interview. “I was not bothered whether I earned
no money, little money, or a lot. My goal was very simple — one flat and one Fiat!” (He eventually owned a fleet of luxury cars.) He said that his father had discouraged him from acting, hoping that he would follow him into teaching instead, but that his mother had been more encouraging. He supported himself initially as a mechanic for a drilling company before winning a talent contest organized by an entertainment magazine. Editors’ Picks

As a film star, Dharmendra reportedly amassed a fortune from endorsements and investments, including the restaurant chains Garam Dharam Dha-
In 2004, he was elected to the lower house of the Indian Parliament as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was reportedly criticized for being inattentive to constituents. Dharmendra later described his decision to run for office as impulsive and spoke of his time in office with regret. Of politics, he said, “I can’t play the game of scoundrels.”
He married Prakash Kaur in 1954, and they had four children, including their sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, both of whom became Bollywood actors. Dharmendra’s second marriage, in 1980, was to the actress and politician Hema Malini, his frequent co-star, and they had two children, one of whom, Esha Deol, is also an actress. Complete information on survivors was not immediately available. In 2017, Dharmendra told The Sunday Guardian that he would never write a memoir, and he dismissed the idea of a biopic of his life. “People forget films easily,” he said. “People should remember you despite the lack of any biography or biopic.” Jin Yu Young is a reporter and researcher for The Times, based in Seoul, covering South Korea and international breaking news. A Pakistani viewer has shared a positive review of Dhurandhar praising the film, but finding fault with its depiction of Akshaye Khanna’s Rehman Dakait. A Pakistani social media user, originally from Karachi, has reviewed the Bollywood film Dhurandhar, which is set in his hometown and tells the story of the gangs of Karachi’s Lyari Town. In their review, the anonymous viewer praised the film for its direction and cinematography, but added that the glorification of real-life gangster Rehman Dakait left them uneasy. Pak man reviews Dhurandhar Taking to Reddit, the viewer shared their review of Dhurandhar with the title: “My take on Dhurandar as a guy from Karachi (sic).” They began with praise for the film, writing, “First of all, I liked the film. what they had an issue with. “That said, one thing that kind of bothered me was how Rehman Dakait was somewhat glorified. I get it, it’s fictional, but still, as someone who grew up hearing stories about this cold-blooded criminal, it was hard to view him as fictional.” Drawing parallels to depictions of Dawood Ibrahim in Hindi cinema, they added, “Maybe if they changed the name it would be better, for eg how would you feel if someone plays Dawood Ibrahim in a movie and his character is glorified.” But the viewer added that ‘it was a good movie overall’, even though

HYDERABAD-Hollywood director James Cameron has now expressed a desire to visit the sets of director S. S. Rajamouli’s upcoming magnum opus ‘Varanasi’, featuring Telugu star Mahesh Babu in the lead, and see the ace director create his magic. Cameron made this request during a conversation he had with Rajamouli after the latter watched Cameron’s eagerly awaited entertainer ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’, which is to hit screens worldwide on December 19 this year. Right at the beginning of the conversation, Cameron thanked Rajamouli for agreeing to watch and discuss his film and said, “Thank you so much for doing this. I think it’s important for filmmakers to talk and compare similarities in their mental creative process and in their techniques and so on. I’d love to come to your set. May I come to your set sometime and watch you create your magic?” A pleasantly surprised Rajamouli
Rajamouli said yes and went on to give an update on the status of the film. He said, “It’s almost a year now and another seven, eight months to go. Yes, we are in the middle of the shoot.” Cameron replied, “Okay, plenty of time. Well, tell me when you’re doing something fun. I don’t know, something with tigers.” ‘Varanasi’ is a film that is being directed by S. S. Rajamouli, featuring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj in the lead. The title of the film was revealed at a grand event organized at the Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad in the presence of several thousand excited fans last month. The event, being hailed as a oncein-a-generation spectacle, saw fans in the thousands turning up for the event, making it one of the largest live fan congregations ever seen in the Indian entertainment space. The event featured one of the biggest stages ever erected for a film event, with a 100 ft height and a 130 ft wide screen to supplement it. (IANS) (Courtesy: https://indiawest.com/)
