Coup de Pouce Coup de Pouce is a grant that provides a limited amount of financial aid to degree seeking students at AUP. To receive this grant, students must be registered in classes linked to study trips and must be in financial need. •

The grant is funded by the Office of the President and profits generated from vending machines on AUP’s campus.

An application form and essay must be completed online to apply for the grant.

Incomplete or inaccurate application forms will not be considered.

Coup de Pouce applications are reviewed by two sub-committees: for undergraduate applications, the committee is composed of one Undergraduate Student Council member, one Financial Aid officer, and one administrator from Student Development; for graduate applicants — the committee is composed of one Graduate Student Council member, one Financial Aid officer, and one graduate administrator.

CP Policy information Registration Registration for study trips is done the same way as registration for academic courses: online through the registration portal on MyAUP Student Services. MyAUP > My Account > My Student Services > Registration To find a study trip in the portal, enter “CP” in the department field. A list of all study trips offered for the specified semester will appear.

Study Trip Confirmation & Payment On the third week of class, the Cultural Programs Office sends an announcement email of the study trip confirmation and student participation. When a student registers online for a study trip, the cost of the trip is automatically shown on the student’s account. See Student Accounting Services for details about the student account and related charges. Payment for study trips is due as soon as the trip is officially confirmed via email by the Cultural Programs Office to registered students and no later than the end of the

Cancellation

IMPORTANT: The last day to cancel and remove the charge of the study trip from the student’s account is the last day of DROP/ADD. A student who has not dropped the study trip in the online registration portal by the last day of DROP/ADD is registered and will be held responsible for the entire cost of the trip if the study trip is confirmed on the third week of the class by announcement email. Cultural Excursions, Activities and Tickets Sign-up for cultural excursions, activities, and tickets is done through the Cultural Program website. To sign up, the student must pay the full amount of the excursion or ticket on the corresponding page. Once payment is made, no cancellations or refunds are possible.

Priority for Participation Students registered in corresponding course(s) of a study trip are given priority for participation on study trips. In the event of enrollment exceeding the number of spots prebooked, the Cultural Program Office team does their best to add extra spots to the trip. Please note, however, that sometimes this is not possible due to outside restraints (flights, hotels, etc.). In this case, students

CP Policy information Excused Absences Students who are registered in a class corresponding to a study trip are excused by Academic Affairs from attending their other classes during the dates of the study trip if they are attending the trip. If the time of departure or arrival allows a student to attend class before leaving or after returning from a study trip, the student may be expected to do so and must be in contact with their professor to make sure this is clear for both the

Accommodation, Transportation and Special Arrangement Requests In most cases, students share accommodation in sets of twin, triple, and quad (or more in specific circumstances), depending on the establishment and trip budget. Students may submit special rooming requests by answering to the announcement email of the study trip confirmation. In most cases, transportation is reserved in advance by the Cultural Program Office in order to secure the best possible times according to the professor’s schedule and obtain the best possible prices. Students wishing to arrange their own lodging or transportation, or any other specific

Visas

Any student who registers for a cultural excursion or study trip that involves travel outside of France and who does not have the proper documents to travel at the date of the study trip, or who does not correctly fulfill the Carte de Séjour requirements by providing the necessary documents to the Student Immigration Services Office at the start of the semester and is, therefore, unable to

This one-day excursion offers students an opportunity to experience the richness of the French language in Villers-Cotterêts, home to the Cité internationale de la langue française. Located in the historic château where King François I declared French the official language of the kingdom, the site offers an immersive journey through centuries of linguistic and cultural evolution. From royal ordinances to today’s global voices, the visit highlights how French has grown, adapted, and connected people across continents. This excursion invites participants to explore the many (hi)stories that have shaped French into a living, shared language with deep roots and worldwide resonance.

Explore Guadeloupe, a French Caribbean island that played a key role during the Age of Great Discoveries (1492–1600)—a place that witnessed the “destruction” of its indigenous people and the arrival of an enslaved African workforce. Known as l’île papillon (“Butterfly Island”) for its shape, Guadeloupe is far more complex than its postcard image suggests. Beyond beaches, waterfalls, mangroves, coves, and La Soufrière volcano, its landscapes, literature, and languages bear traces of colonial history. Explore pre-Columbian sites at Trois-Rivières and former sugarcane plantations and rum distilleries such as Bologne or Longueteau. Visit Les marches aux esclaves, the slave cemetery, and the Mémorial ACTe—sites inviting reflection on a past that continues to shape the island’s vibrant cultural identity.

Undertake field research in one of the most successfully promoted destinations in recent years, meeting with local brand managers, place influencers and cultural researchers. In this exceptional and highly unlikely ‘tourist’ destination of ‘fire & ice,’ conduct ethnographic and communications field research in the globalized-market-driven ‘promotional culture’ that is fast transforming “Iceland”, especially as it impacts local customs, habits and traditions and Iceland’s shared sense of place and nation. Edinburgh, Scotland: Queens, Witches, and Working Women allows students to explore the historic city of Edinburgh and learn how the contemporary city is trying to reconcile with the fraught elements of its past. Walk through its streets and learn about the witch trials that rocked the city and the subsequent pardons issued to its victims. Discover the life and times of Mary Queen of Scots by visiting the city’s castles and reflect upon Scotland’s push for independence. Learn about women workers roles in the industrialization of the city, stroll through Black history with an historian and learn about the University of Edinburgh’s recognition of its involvement in the Transatlantic slave trade.

How can writing engage with the archives and visual material while reflecting on the past and imagining new futures for the world? On this trip, Lisbon becomes a contact zone for thinking empire as both an infrastructure of reason and an engine of myth. Students will engage with colonial archives and museological practices that turned Asia and Africa into Europe’s “elsewhere.” Each visit emphasizes material culture (maps, saints, spices, statues, bureaucratic files) as instruments of enchantment and domination. The program culminates in field notes and creative sketches that feed into The Enchantment Lab final project as well as creative pieces that engage with what is archived and what can only be imagined.

This trip will take students off the beaten path and to the heart of Tuscany: discover the art and architecture of the medieval cities of Siena and Arezzo and how the Etruscans and Romans laid the foundations for the region’s contemporary wine production. You will visit a winemaker, learn about the particularities of local wines and how they’re produced. You will also visit the cultural highlights of the birthplaces of Piero della Francesca and Giorgio Vasari, learning about Renaissance fresco techniques and medieval and Baroque art and architecture.

Exploring the Mediterranean as a crossroads of empire, religion, and trade, students will trace how Spanish imperial ambitions were built on networks of conquest, slavery, and colonial expansion that linked Europe, the Americas, and Africa. Experiencing the typical festivities of the Holy Week—with its parades, music, and traditional dress— in Seville and Granada, offers a vivid window into the diversity of Andalusian identity and the endurance of subaltern cultural forms. Visits to the Archivo de Indias, Alcázar, Alhambra, and Albaicín reveal how power, faith, and hybridity shaped both early modern and colonial worlds. Through walking tours, art visits, and creative writing projects, students engage firsthand with the layered legacies of empire, memory, and Mediterranean-Atlantic interconnectedness.

This trip will allow students to discover different dimensions of the cultures of Sicily and explore some aspects of the layers of its history that have shaped the identity, architecture, food, language and dialects of its inhabitants. Students will visit sites and meet with intellectuals from Palermo to better understand the roles and the characteristics of their city, its interaction with different Mediterranean cultures (especially Spanish, Middle Eastern, and North African ones), the preserved Muslim-Normand style of many of its monuments, and the Renaissance influence on its evolution and its attachment to the rest of Italy.

The Netherlands is the lowest part of Europe and has been protected through the centuries by an impressive body of knowledge about water management. Anthropogenic Climate Change poses an unprecedented challenge for the future of this river delta due to climate change. We will set up base camp in Amsterdam and, from there, organize day trips to the Dutch version of Silicon Valley in Eindhoven and to the center of political climate policy-making in The Hague. This intensive study trip offers an in-depth overview of sustainability management, NGO, and public policy responses to climate change and human impacts on the environment, with high-ranking experts in these sectors offering insights into the latest solutions and management practices. The aim of this trip is to allow students to discover different aspects of Jordan’s history and contemporary social dynamics. From Amman to Jerash, and from Petra, Madaba to the Dead Sea, we will visit Roman, Nabataean, Christian and Islamic monuments. The trip will include as well meetings with Jordanian civil society actors involved in promoting and defending human rights and women’s rights in the kingdom.

We will begin by exploring Naples, a lively city filled with rich history, stunning architecture, and delicious cuisine. Stroll through its vibrant streets, visit historic landmarks, and enjoy authentic pizza where it was not born. On day two, journey to Herculaneum, the ancient seaside town buried by Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Discover its beautifully preserved houses, frescoes, and mosaics before heading to Mount Vesuvius itself. We will hike to the crater (bring hiking shoes) and around for panoramic views over the Bay of Naples and the surrounding countryside. On day three we will head for the legendary ruins of Pompeii, where entire streets, temples, and villas tell the story of Roman life before the eruption.

Discovering the Loire Valley: Language, History, and Culture. Fascinated by the Loire Valley’s rich history, magnificent châteaux, and enduring cultural legacy? This study trip offers a unique opportunity to explore the evolution of French language, art, and identity in one of France’s most celebrated regions – a microcosm of Renaissance power and culture. Students will explore the heart of Tours, once a center of humanist learning, and visit the château de Chenonceau, whose architecture and mythology inspired works from Rabelais’s Gargantua (1535) to Disney’s Cinderella (1950). At Clos Lucé, participants will encounter the inventive genius of Leonardo da Vinci, who lived there until his death in 1519. The journey concludes at the nearby Château d’Amboise, uncovering the intertwined histories of Joan of Arc, Machiavelli, François I, and Catherine de Medici.

Rouen has a small city center but with an enormous number of Gothic gems. There is the church of St. Maclou in the Flamboyant Gothic style, the old monastery of St. Ouen, and two unusual remnants of Gothic secular architecture. The Church of Joan of Arc is located right next to the exact site where she was burned at the stake, and contains beautiful examples of late medieval stained glass. The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen features one of the richest collections in national museums outside of Paris, including impressionist paintings by Monet, Caillebotte, Sisley and Renoir as well as remarkable pieces by Velázquez and Caravaggio and Géricault. It will be a wonderful experience towards the end of the course on Introduction to the History of Art I and Medieval Art & Architecture. The visit is designed as an introduction suited for all students, majoring in art history or not.
