This project is meant to investigate the role of program in relationship to an existing space on campus, the Sheldon Museum of Art. Main considerations look at relationship pairings to see the nature of and tension created within the interactions of design. Art and Architecture Museum and University Old and New Human and Built How are these considered and approached with deference or bias, what is established in an addition to compliment the Sheldon? By looking at this threshold intervention with a discerning eye we define how “place” is established within our proposed design. The specified programs of gathering and entry are necessary, however we must look beyond what is merely the minimum and determine what the program needs and how that vision comes to life in looking at what supplemental programs ensure the success of our project’s mission. Along with this, we began to consider and design the technical aspects of the project, incorporate what has been taught throughout our coursework in order to synthesize information learned, information learned. The Sheldon Museum of Art is located on UNL’s campus, along the 12th & R intersection. The boundaries of the site intervention are limited by the constraints of existing campus buildings and being able to physically connect to the Sheldon in some aspect. Since placement is flexible, we analyzed how we wanted to integrate into the site, focusing on user circulation through campus and having the building become a part of the natural flow of campus, and leveraging under-utilized aspects of the site. The North parking lot has desired site qualities of connective moments towards main nodes of campus, the ability to bridge the divide between the public and private aspect of campus to a prominent community space, and potential to complement the Sheldon without detracting from existing site features. Looking at placement, we prioritized creating where design was lacking, deciding to maintain the sculpture gardens, and programmed outdoor green spaces, in favor of re-hauling the currently utilitarian plot of the parking lot. Designing to serve the community connection to campus and the Sheldon is best done through this North site which is seen in our site exploration and discussed in greater depth throughout our design process.

Another broken grid instance, this is less aesthetic and more functional, but a drainage instance where even that element was designed.
Similar to the first, a Southwest perspective of the building, focused on the crossing planes of the sculpture garden.

The curve does not break the grid, but there is an extra geometry framing the column. While the light is less architectural, there is deference to the column.
There is a continuance of geometry from the exterior, shadowing the interior ceiling details, but slightly hidden with the reflection instance.
While the grid did not have to be broken for this insertion, it makes us question why this detail inspired such a move.
Even the tables align to the grid, and the materials of the environment become more polished with depth and distance.

This set of paintings explores the Sheldon Art Museum and the physical and experiential inhabitation of a threshold. The physical artifact that resulted from these investigations activates the body and the spatial relationships of its context. While the intent of the artifact is for it to speak for itself, the artist’s description of each frame is as follows: Frame 1, The Sheldon from afar; Frame 2, looking up, approaching the threshold; Frame 3, the free-standing column; Frame 4, Behind the columns; Frame 5, The space between the grid; Frame 6, Looking up at the anomaly; Frame 7, Inside on a grid line; Frame 8, Looks at the difference; Frame 9, the other break in the grid. This artifact’s exploration focuses on the threshold space created where the grid is broken into two. The entrances of the Grand Hall pushed back from the facade are the only instances of the column grid being broken. The glass curtain walls fall halfway between two grid lines, the only place where the whole column is revealed. The space behind the columns and before the entrance is a unique and beautiful threshold. The paintings are acrylic on four-by-four inch canvases. While the representation of the threshold is highly saturated, it contrasts the monotone reality of the building. The building acts as a blank canvas where art is encouraged to escape from the galleries and flood all surfaces.

By deconstructing the South facade, there is a better understanding of how the site reads in terms of hierarchy. This proved to be an exercise in dissecting how the human eye reads space in terms of order, depth, and the planar tension between related objects. The exterior was the easiest to piece apart, as there are so many instances of singularity of existing objects, and the separation between them is markedly objective. One of the main focuses which is highlighted by the use of laser cutting, is how even with planar instances, there is an undeniable massing to the perspective as a whole. It reads as unified and solid, not unlike the building.
SITE CONDITIONS - THRESHOLD II
The interior perspective modeled here shows the view from North to South, looking almost through and past the Great Hall. The focus is not the destination, but the series of thresholds one must cross in order to reach the end of the entry. While this perspective took twice as long to unravel as the other, much of that struggle must be attributed to the detailing of the intimate interior. As there is a great deal for the eye to process, the abstraction of representing the space as it exists weighed heavily against the nature of the exercise in chronicling an order, in a space where balance is defined by the third dimension.

“Amelia Tavella has just completed the rehabilitation and extension of the Convent Saint-François, in Santa-Lucia di Tallano, Corsica. This partially ruined building from 1480, a historical monument, had been abandoned for a very long time. Nature has grown inside the building, Siamese nature slipped between the stones and then transformed into plant armor that protects against erosion and collapse. A fig tree is included in the facade. The wood, the roots become structural replaced the lime. An essential component of the historic monument, we have honored this nature which will have long protected the dormant building before its resurrection. Amelia Tavella has chosen to keep the ruins and replace the torn part, the phantom part, in copper work which will become the House of the Territory. The copper allowed a gesture of softness, it is feminine like stone. Beginning with existing programs, we analyzed what those spaces catered towards, traditional galleries and a great hall with a focus on quiet contemplation; for private use, a couple of main offices, desks along with general storage sharing square footage with utility rooms. Administration expressed a desire for dedicated programmed community space, so we used this as a foundation for the addition, where students can be expressive in an artistic environment. The recent programs exist as supplementary for what the Sheldon has currently, as an addition, we integrated the proposed with the existing through program cultivation and floor plan layouts. The first floor is primarily a gathering space, connecting to an offshoot of the Sheldon’s Great Hall, here students can congregate informally, or the space can be furnished for formal events. Moving up the stairway, we come to a central hub where students can choose to enter the interactive art program, where hands-on learning and making occurs. Across the stairway, there are offices for staff that primarily work with student programming, and a small entryway before the offices to blur the divide between informal and formal. The basement directly connects to the storage system of the Sheldon, inspiring placement of an archive exposition area for students to view an interact with works of art. Additionally designed, a student lounge, for retreat and relaxation, but also inspiration; this would be student-driven space, where they choose how to make it their own.

Authenticity of form and representation is a high priority in this design, driving structural and materiality considerations. Our addition physically abstracts various driving principles of the Sheldon, for instance the three-centered arch motif, where scale is translated to fluctuate based on interior programs. The structural integrity of the arch is also pure, supporting the loads of our building where the Sheldon’s structure is primarily concrete concealed by a travertine façade. Concrete has a clear presence of façade and form, melding the divided approach taken in the precedent. By choosing to complement concrete with wood, we highlight the contrast of inorganic and organic materiality seen in both buildings, however wood in the previous situation is merely a veneer, whereas ours is true for detailing and furnishment. Where authenticity is seen in a tangible sense, there is also a social consideration of authenticity of connection, seen in prioritized campus integration. With Northeastern deference of form and entrance, we leverage the natural circulation paths of campus, and frame our building to receive this flow. Direct views through social programs create transparency where desired, bridging the divide between private and public space; indirect views made semi opaque by frosted glasses pique interest and further draw passersby into our building. It is our intention to serve the students of campus, as such designed a building which balanced site situation, design ideation, community integration, and program organization.

The material palette shapes an intimate user experience while maintaining the connection to structural and visual authenticity. The primary materials chosen echo the design position statement, with an emphasis on being authentic where the Museum is not. For instance, the main structure consists of cast in place concrete, the travertine façade with dramatic arches is merely an artistic flourish. Our design took the form of three-centered arches and decided precast concrete would best express the transparency of structural nature. This idea of direct translation became constant throughout the building, where the Sheldon has wood veneer, we have wood flooring and details; where there is massing and few large windows, we have a gradient of transparency from opaque to translucency. Taking the inauthentic motifs of the Sheldon and bringing them into the open is a central concept of our material palette. Our addition does not hide behind a false façade, designed with the same attention to detail and construction as Philip Johnson, but it exists simply as it is.

The most prominent exterior connections of our building have expansive vertical fenestration instances, and other locations have the exterior wall break a singular line and flush into open interior or exterior spaces. Due to the nature of flexibility between spaces and connection points and details, we chose to use precast concrete slabs to achieve desired precise structural effects as well as act aesthetically. Since the basis of the design is modular, this makes precast an ideal strategy for managing cost effects while preserving the integrity of the details of the design. One such example is the repetitive nature of the arch connections to each other, the intersection at each grid point is crucial to the success of the overarching proposal; as such the detail subtly nests together to compliment the independent bolted plates for each arch unit, all of which are then welded together. Other technical details emphasize the nature of how the building interacts with the site, such as water run-off which then can be used in our building’s greywater system, or the footing instance which highlights the continuous insulation through the foundation elements. The window details are included since there are an atypical number of windows as part of the design, which could raise building performance concerns. As existing proprietary information, the channeled glass and double paned glass systems are proven successful designs that we integrated and improved upon for our fenestration objectives.

Our primary structure is the prominent concrete arch motif throughout the project. Sitting at a 16’-8” column grid, we kept the intimacy of the grid as a feature, dimensioning for an authenticity of structure by manipulating the profiles and geometry of the arch. Since the scaling of a singular dimension of the arch fluctuates, we determined load transference would be most efficient at floor plate instances. The arches rest along the floor plates, and the concrete slab helps equalize the load to transfer to the next floor’s arches. The interior walls incorporated are entirely nonstructural as it would be redundant in design, only serving to raise construction costs unnecessarily. The only other structural element of the interior is the shear stability provided by an off-center core placed along the West end of the building, along the “primary” axis as it is the longest edge of the building. Our basement has 12” thick concrete walls for our foundation, and simple spread footings resting under each column grid point sitting at 4’x4’x2’. The underground perimeter of the building has continuous spread footings. These efforts, along with the considered load of the building only necessitate a shallow foundation as the most desirable.

Looking at sustainable strategies, we used the information from the city’s environmental data generated in Climate Studio’s psychrometric chart to prioritize various sustainability moves throughout various seasons. Not all strategies are beneficial for each season, but we made the most effective moves by prioritizing the highest measured actions throughout the annual year, heating & cooling, sun shading, and adaptive comfort ventilation— the last of which brings us to our next process. Our project uses an underfloor air distribution system (UFAD). This achieves a clean ceiling plane that celebrates the connection between the precast concrete arches and the structural concrete floor slab. Using the pressurized floor plenum method over ducted supply is more efficient, has lower installation costs, is self-balancing, decreases noise travel, and easily rearranged when needed. Because the programs on all three levels of our projects serve different purposes, each floor has its own air distribution unit. Each floor is divided into three zones, done by creating sub plenums. The zones are outlined in plans, restrooms alone, and then split into public and private spaces. Outside air is brought from the west façade and travels down a vertical chase, adjacent to the mechanical room to serve all three air handling units. The exhaust is expelled from the roof, through a vertical chase adjacent to the mechanical room. Electrical and communication wiring run through the raised floor plenum and travel between floors in conduit that runs through the hollow intersections of the precast concrete arches.

One of our main concerns moving ahead with our design was having transparency in the design, to have an open welcoming nature the Sheldon does not express. A motif of gradient opacity emerged, and from there we knew we needed to explore fenestration that would not be uncomfortable for users, or completely draining from an energy or economic standpoint. Our analysis began with window types, knowing double paned glass to have better performance than single pane glass, we began to research further alternatives, discovering channeled glass, which has insulation properties in addition to being more effective at blocking excess sun lighting. Starting with a radiation study, we determined the East and South sides would be the most susceptible to harsh light, and so implemented an overhang on the East, while using the Sheldon on the South. These main architectural moves help set a foundation, moving forward to the glass study we determined channeled glass to halve the original instances of lighting concerns. Knowing building performance could also be improved upon with glass finishes, we further decided to sandblast the glass, which supports our narrative of spaces maintaining privacy without compromising accessibility to natural light, enhancing user experience and productivity levels.

A general sector concern regarding new construction in architecture is carbon emissions during construction. Though concrete is one of the largest contributors regarding building materials, there are alternatives for precast options, low carbon designs which we would advocate the use of. These various alternatives are carbon negative, as they use ground slag, a waste product from steel production instead of cement, while carbon is consumed during the developmental process. Carbon emissions can be cut up to 48% from baseline practices (current 1:1 ratio of concrete produced to carbon emitted). Wood is another main material we are incorporating into the design. Though not as prominent as concrete, this authentic material is the greenest building component easily available in this region, as such has a low carbon footprint while bringing an element of organic comfort to the interiors of our addition. Another concern we focused on anticipating is the impact on the green space of campus. Though the proposed site is a paved lot with minimal green space, our design looks at adding to the campus’s square footage for outdoor recreation and leisure, acknowledging that minimizing or even maintaining the current situation to be constrictive. Our intervention at the Northeast corner carries the most weight on site as it connects to a main intersection of campus near the Learning Commons Library. Here, appeal is of immense importance and is a foundational opportunity to pique interest in our scheme’s programs.
