BTG Eddisons Property Auctions will host a live in-room and Live Stream auction alongside the National Landlord Investment Show in London on 28th October. Check the Condition Start by reading the catalogue description carefully and looking closely at the photographs. Where possible, attend a viewing and inspect the equipment in person. Look for signs of heavy use, rust, damage, missing parts, leaks or electrical issues and find out as much as you can about its working condition. Remember that second hand equipment may not come with a manufacturer's warranty, so understanding exactly what you're buying is important.
Think About Parts and Servicing Before bidding, make a note of the make and model and check whether replacement parts and servicing are still available. Older or discontinued equipment may be cheaper to buy, but could prove more expensive to maintain if parts are difficult to source. It's also worth considering how much use the equipment is likely to get. Something suitable for occasional use may not be the right
choice for a busy commercial kitchen.
Don't Overlook Compliance Depending on the type of equipment, there may be safety and compliance requirements to consider, particularly with gas and electrical appliances. Find out what information or certification is provided with the lot and whether any additional testing or installation will be required before the equipment can be used.
Factor In the Extra Costs Your winning bid is only part of the overall cost. Check the auctioneer's terms for buyer's premium, VAT and any additional charges. You should also consider collection, transportation, dismantling and professional installation. Large commercial appliances can require specialist handling, so it's worth pricing this up beforehand.
Set a Limit Before You Bid It's easy to get caught up in competitive bidding, so decide on your maximum spend before the
auction begins. Make sure your budget includes all the additional costs and don't be tempted to bid beyond what the equipment is worth to your business.
