The founder of John Pye Auctions leaves behind a remarkable legacy spanning six decades of family, innovation and the auction industry. It is with great sadness that John Pye Auctions has announced the passing of its founder, John Pye, who died on the evening of Monday 10th August at the age of 95, surrounded by his family. John lived a remarkable life filled with laughter, hard work and an enduring commitment to his family business. He leaves behind a lasting legacy within John Pye & Sons, of which he was immensely proud. The company’s success is a testament to his determination and vision, alongside the contribution of the many colleagues who have been part of the extended John Pye family over the years. John founded the family business alongside his wife, Ann Pye, in 1968. Originally established as ‘Furniture & General Auctions’, the partnership operated from Nottingham’s former Cattle Market site with little more than a horse and cart. John lived to see that small operation develop into one of Britain’s leading commercial auction companies. For its first two decades, the business specialised in probate house clearances, business asset disposals and private chattels. In 1990, the company was incorporated as John Pye & Sons Limited and moved to larger premises at Banton House on Meadow Lane, near Notts County Football Ground, allowing it to expand its client base across the East Midlands. During the challenging UK recession of the 1990s, the business continued to grow, acquiring the former Shipstone’s ‘Star’ Brewery site in 1995 and creating a much larger base from which to expand. Innovation remained central to John’s approach. In the early 2000s, John Pye & Sons became one of the first auction houses to embrace online auctions, eventually moving away from traditional saleroom auctions to operate entirely online. Today, in 2026, John Pye Auctions has grown into a leading UK commercial auction house network, combining traditional auction principles with modern technology.
John was also one of six founding members of NAVA, the National Association of Auctioneers and Valuers, in 1988 and later served as its Chairman. NAVA has since become the UK’s largest association for auctioneers and is recognised in Government procurement tenders. It is now part of Propertymark, representing more than 20,000 members across the property and chattels industry. Those who knew John will remember him as a larger-thanlife character, with a warm, positive and often playful personality. He made a lasting impression on those around him and was widely regarded as a true local legend. He will be greatly missed by colleagues, friends, customers and the wider auction community. John is survived by his wife Ann, two sons, granddaughter and grandson, who will continue to carry forward his legacy. For John Pye Auctions and its customers, the team will continue, in John’s own spirit, with business as usual and ambitious plans for the years ahead. The Pye family would like to thank everyone for their kind words, support and patience during this incredibly sad time.

Olivia Proudley, Director and Chartered Surveyor at Proudley Associates, offers a behind-the-scenes look at a typical day in the life of a business valuer. For many people, the word valuation conjures up images of spreadsheets, financial models and a final figure produced at the end of a long calculation. In reality, business and asset valuation is far more handson. No two businesses are ever quite the same and no two valuation assignments are identical. One day might involve walking through a food manufacturing facility; the next, inspecting a fleet of commercial vehicles or a warehouse full of stock and distribution equipment. So, what does a typical day in the life of a professional valuer actually look like? The work begins long before arriving on site. Background information, asset registers, management accounts, previous valuations and finance schedules all help build an initial picture of the business. Sometimes the information is comprehensive, sometimes it amounts to little more than a company name and an address. Being able to work with uncertainty and build the picture as you go is an important part of the job. Once on site, first impressions can tell you a great deal. Is the business trading normally? Are production lines running? Are assets well maintained? How are staff using the equipment? The atmosphere and condition of a site provide valuable context that cannot always be captured on a balance sheet. The physical inspection is, of course, a key part of the process, but valuation involves much more than recording serial numbers and taking photographs. A valuer needs to understand what an asset does, its age and condition, whether it is operational, how it has been modified or maintained and even how easily it could be removed and relocated. There can also be value in places buyers might not immediately consider. Specialist tooling, spare parts, work in progress, customer contracts and other less obvious assets can all contribute to the overall picture. In some circumstances, the greatest value may come from selling a business as a going concern rather than breaking its assets up individually.
Conversations are equally important. Engineers can provide insight into maintenance and equipment history, operations managers can identify critical assets, while directors can explain the wider commercial picture. In distressed situations, discussions with insolvency practitioners can provide essential context around timescales and stakeholder expectations. Throughout the process, the question is always: who might buy this? Domestic and international demand, recent comparable sales, market conditions and potential disposal routes all need to be considered. An auction may be the right solution in one situation, while a private treaty sale or going-concern transaction could produce a better outcome in another. Back at the office, the analysis continues. Photographs and asset schedules are reviewed, comparable sales researched and current buyer appetite assessed before the findings are brought together in a detailed valuation report. Ultimately, a valuation is about much more than arriving at a number. It is about understanding the business, its assets and the market, then providing clients with clear, evidencebased information to help them make the right decision. For me, that combination of commercial insight, practical investigation and market knowledge is what makes valuation so interesting. There is a little bit of detective work, a lot of walking and always the same question in mind: how can we maximise the value of what is in front of us?
