After serving travellers for more than half a century, the Redbeck Motel in Crofton, Wakefield has closed for the final time.

Since opening in 1969, the well-known roadside stop became a familiar landmark, recognised for its round-theclock service, popular breakfast offerings and welcoming atmosphere.

Throughout its long history, the motel attracted a steady stream of visitors, including several high-profile names from the world of entertainment. Performers such as Sir Tom Jones, Diana Ross, Shirley Bassey, Danny La Rue and The Three Degrees were among those to pass through its doors. The venue also made appearances on television, including scenes featured in Emmerdale, further securing its place in local culture.

With planning permission granted for the site to be redeveloped for housing, the closure marks the end of a significant chapter for the Crofton community. Reflecting on the motel’s legacy via social media, Managing Director Peter Worth JP said the Redbeck had always been more than just a roadside stop, recalling the countless early morning coffees and late-night conversations shared there over the decades.

As the site prepares for its next phase, BPI Auctions has been appointed to handle the online sale of the motel’s contents, all offered without reserve. The auction features a wide range of items from across the property, including the well-known Redbeck signage, bedroom and restaurant furniture and a selection of commercial catering equipment.

About BPI

Among the lots are fryers, griddles, ovens, stainless steel walk-in fridges and freezers, pass-through dishwashers, microwaves, vending machines, white goods and other fixtures from the motel’s restaurant and kitchen areas.

Running until 12th March, the sale provides businesses, collectors and local buyers with the chance to secure a piece of the Redbeck’s long-standing history.

When the Back Office Moves, Everything Moves with it - Ready or Not?

Auctioneers don’t usually wake up excited about a new back-office system. It’s not glamorous. It’s not a “big launch.” It’s the plumbing, the place where the work actually happens. But when the industry’s infrastructure shifts, the back office stops being a quiet operational choice and becomes a businesscritical decision.

That’s why the recent announcement from a major player formally withdrawing support for the back-office system that fed their platform has hit so hard. It’s not a minor update; it’s a critical, time-bound change being forced upon auctioneers, and it is frightening precisely because it impacts the fundamentals: listings, service levels, compliance, cashflow and reputation.

If your workflow depends on a system now being retired, postponed, “kept alive,” or left without a clear roadmap, the risk is no longer theoretical, it’s immediate and commercial.

And it raises a simple question: what replaces it?

The case for a modern back office, built for the web

The BidHarvest® back office has been designed specifically to be the ideal replacement; not as a bolt-on, not as a partial workflow tool and not as a compromise that forces auctioneers to choose between operational control and platform reach.

BidHarvest® delivers a unified, web-based Back Office environment that supports the day-to-day of running auctions: user registration, consigning, lotting, contracting, invoicing, settlements, auditability and the data quality required to keep everything moving.

But the key difference is that it doesn’t stop at “admin.”

BidHarvest® also includes:

• A full web front-end

• Private-label catalogue only or live and timed bidding options

• API layer that integrates with major platforms, enabling auctioneers to continue listing with them while retaining ownership and control of their core operational systems and data.

You can modernise your back office without losing your routes to market.

BidHarvest® is not a “minimum viable” alternative. It’s a platform back office designed to increase operational capability, not merely preserve it.

At its core is a complete consignment toolset, including:

• Digital consignment contracts

• Structured bidder and vendor onboarding and contract workflows that support consistent, auditable processes without paper bottlenecks.

• Full invoicing and settlement paperwork

• Clean, repeatable generation of buyer invoices, vendor statements, settlement packs and the documentation auctioneers need to stay compliant and professional at scale.

• Accounting integration that fits real businesses, Including integration with Xero, so reconciliation and financial reporting aren’t separated from the auction workflow.

Migration matters more than features

In moments like this, it’s easy for the industry to talk about “features” but the lived reality of switching systems is about continuity.

A successful move depends on whether you can bring your operation with you: vendor history, buyer history, lot records, financial states, compliance data and the workflow logic that makes your business your business.

That’s why BidHarvest® includes data migration services from legacy systems hardwired into our API’s, designed to reduce

disruption and shorten the time from decision to stability. Migration is not an afterthought; it’s the foundation of a credible replacement.

Platform reach without platform dependency

Perhaps the most important lesson from the recent platformlinked withdrawal is this: Auctioneers should not have to tie their operational core to the lifecycle decisions of anyone else.

BidHarvest® supports continued listing across major platforms via API integrations, while giving you a back office that remains yours, your processes, your data, you in control.

And if you choose to run your own route to market, you can: BidHarvest® includes private-label live and timed bidding alongside your full web front end.

You’re not locked into a single channel. You’re not forced into a single dependency. You have options and you can change them as the market changes.

If your current setup is affected by this shift, not properly assessing the replacement options including BidHarvest® could be a mistake. Not because change is fashionable, but because the back office is the operating system of the auction business. And operating systems must be supported, secure, and built for what comes next.

BidHarvest® is ready for that job.

Book a walkthrough and see BidHarvest® in action.

BidHarvest® delivers a unified auction platform designed to simplify operations and give auctioneers complete control from intake to invoice.

• Data migration services from legacy systems to reduce disruption.

• Full consignment toolset with digital contracts and audit-friendly workflows.

• Xero integration for smoother accounting and reconciliation.

• Optional full web front end and private-label live and timed bidding.

In business, the pressure to invest in new equipment is constant.

Upgrading machinery, replacing IT systems or expanding a vehicle fleet can make new equipment appealing, offering reliability and efficiency.

However, David Tannock, Personal and Business Debt Adviser at Scotland Debt Solutions, says one of the smartest decisions a company can make, particularly when cash flow is tight, is to consider buying second hand.

Tannock notes that financial pressure is often caused not by turnover, but by how cash moves in and out of a business. This is where the second-hand market, particularly asset auctions, can play an important role in protecting cash flow.

Preserving Working Capital

One of the most immediate benefits of buying pre-owned equipment is the significantly lower upfront cost. Assets purchased at auction or through reputable resale channels often come at a fraction of the price of new equivalents.

For example, a manufacturing firm might find refurbished machinery available at 40–60% less than the cost of buying new. Savings like this can preserve valuable working capital, allowing businesses to cover wages, pay suppliers or invest elsewhere. In practical terms, liquidity buys time and time can be critical when navigating financial pressure.

Reducing Financial Commitments

Many businesses rely on asset finance to make equipment purchases manageable, but financing also introduces long-term repayment commitments. If trading dips unexpectedly, these fixed costs can quickly put pressure on cash flow.

Buying second hand can reduce this risk. Lower prices may allow businesses to purchase assets outright or reduce the amount of finance required, resulting in fewer fixed costs and greater flexibility.

Avoiding the Steepest Depreciation

New assets depreciate quickly, particularly in their first year. By purchasing used equipment, businesses avoid this initial drop in value and can often achieve a faster return on investment.

For companies operating in asset-heavy sectors such as engineering, construction and transport, this approach can help protect the balance sheet while still expanding operational capacity.

Opportunities Through Asset Auctions

Asset auctions offer a practical route to sourcing quality equipment at competitive prices. Buyers can access a wide range of machinery, vehicles and specialist assets while comparing market prices in real time.

In some cases, even brand-new equipment becomes available through auctions when businesses release surplus assets or restructure operations. For companies looking to grow without draining reserves, auctions can provide a valuable route to ownership.

A Strategic Approach to Growth

Protecting cash flow remains a constant responsibility for business owners. Buying second hand is not simply a cost-saving exercise; it’s a strategic way to expand capacity while keeping financial risk under control.
