Switzerland by Joanna Murray-Smith was commissioned by the Geffen Playhouse, Los Angeles, and received its world premiere in a production by the Sydney Theatre Company at the Drama Theatre, Sydney Opera House, on Friday 7 November 2014. Switzerland received its New Zealand premiere at Circa Theatre on Saturday 17 March 2018.

The play is the sixth and final production in Auckland Theatre Company's 2023 season. Switzerland began previews on Tuesday 19 September and premiered on Thursday 21 September at the ASB Waterfront Theatre, Auckland. Switzerland is 1 hour 35 minutes long with no interval. The production contains strong language and offensive views, including racism and antisemitism, and smoking. Please switch off all noise-emitting devices.

Haere Mai. Welcome.

There are days when I slump into a theatre seat and what happens is so electrifying that I can remember what I was wearing, years later. Such was the case when I saw Sarah Peirse as Patricia Highsmith at the Sydney Opera House in 2014. It was an astonishing turn by one of New Zealand’s most accomplished actors, rightly celebrated far and wide. So I am immensely proud to finish our 30th anniversary season with Sarah and her original collaborators returning to Joanna Murray-Smith’s brilliant thriller Switzerland, this time for her hometown audience.

Chief among those OG’s is Sarah Goodes, an acclaimed director in her native Australia, making her debut with our company. Sarah is a generous artist who has been a joyous colleague. Also an educator, while in Auckland Sarah will conduct a directing masterclass. Joining Sarah is a fabulous creative team of Michael Scott-Mitchell, Steve Francis, Nick Schlieper and our own Samuel Phillips, and we welcome back actor Jarred Blakiston, who was last on our stage in The Haka Party Incident.

As our year draws to a close, I ask you to consider a tax deductible gift to The Theatre Foundation, to secure our next 30 years of theatre making for Auckland. On page 16 you will see details of how you can support our work. We really do need your help so that we may continue to serve our city.

Our gratitude to those organisations and people who support our work, particularly the generous people of Auckland who invest in us through Auckland Council and the arts council, Creative New Zealand.

Soon we will reveal our 31st season. The Auckland Theatre Company we are shepherding into its next era will continue to strive for artistic excellence and ever-greater relevance for the many communities who make up Tāmaki Makaurau. Our next season is created with those twin objectives in mind and I cannot wait to share it with you.

We conclude this anniversary year with Aucklanders coming to their theatre company in droves. It is gratifying for all involved in our company for our work to be connecting so powerfully with audiences. I salute our staff, boards, the crews, artists, playwrights and actors who have made the 30th season a success.

Tonight we raise a glass in tribute to the three decades of people who have built and nurtured this company, the profession it champions and the audiences it entertains and inspires.

Note from the Director

Revisiting a play like Switzerland

is like revisiting the work of Patricia Highsmith – there are always more layers to uncover, details previously overlooked – it is an endlessly fascinating world to re-enter. Why? Because the writing and the characters hold a secret – secrets just out of our reach. The essential mystery inside it is fluid, always flapping its wings against its cage. Our job is to breathe life into the secret lives of these characters. Our work involves asking how can we make one thing hold several possibilities? How do we open up the space to explore the possibilities of what humans are capable of? How do we activate worlds from the written word? How do we get deep under the skin of characters like these?

It’s hard to get tired of a mystery. The true highlight of this production is to see the brilliant Sarah Peirse on stage in her hometown of Auckland in a role she originated to great critical acclaim. To see her embody Patricia once more is both terrifying and delightful.

The first time Switzerland by Joanna Murray-Smith was ever produced was back in 2014 at the Sydney Theatre Company. Along with Sarah Peirse and Eamon Farren and the creative team of Nick Schlieper, Michael ScottMitchell and Steve Francis and myself this production was a huge success and later toured to Melbourne in 2016. Theatre is one the most collaborative of the art forms and work grows and flourishes through these long-term working relationships, but it also grows through the injection of the new, and we have been joined by the incredibly talented Jarred Blakiston in the role of Edward. The new team also includes Samuel Phillips as the Assistant Director, and the incredible stage management team of Catherine Grealish and Maddy Powell, Props & Costumes Manger Emma Aubin, and Production Managers Sam Clavis and Jamie Blackburn.

Also, a huge thank you to Jonathan Bielski and Anna Cameron and everyone at Auckland Theatre Company for inviting us and working so hard to bring Switzerland to New Zealand.

Synopsis

It’s 1995. Somewhere in the Swiss Alps, Patricia Highsmith, renowned master crime novelist – now aging and ailing – hides away in her study, finding solace in her seclusion, her cats and her cigarettes.

Until, one day, she receives an unexpected knock on the door by a polished young man, sent by her publisher to convince her to write

one final instalment of her bestselling series, featuring the master manipulator, Tom Ripley.

It soon becomes clear that the charming stranger is set on a far more sinister mission, and the calculated game of cat and mouse turns into a breathtaking battle of wits as Highsmith and her visitor interrogate identity and the art of creation.
