Welcome to the 2017

Auckland Arts Festival Nau mai, haere mai ki Te Ahurei Toi o Tamaki Makaurau The Festival is a catalyst that creates opportunities for artists to communicate with audiences and audiences to respond to artists’ work. Humans have used art to express themselves and their ideas about the world since time immemorial. Great artists tell stories through their art form – not only with words but with pictures, light, movement and sound. They cause controversy, they start revolutions and, little by little, they change the world.

Artists make art part of life, not an adjunct to it. They raise spirits, make our hearts leap, make us smile, leave thoughts running through our heads, challenge us and make our stomachs lurch with fear or anticipation. Every artist is different and the intention of their art is not always direct but it can lead us to make new discoveries and to want to find out more.

This Festival I have curated a wide variety of artists and events to reach out to the many and varied audiences of Tamaki

Makaurau and beyond. In the 2017 Festival we honour these artists – some from around the world and some from here in Aotearoa – from those who have been making art for many years to those at the beginning of their journey. We invite you to explore new worlds in The Encounter; glory in the rarely experienced masterpiece, Passio; see light used as never before in Power Plant; experience the changing nature of the four seasons in RICE; sing along with Rufus performing the songs of Judy Garland; belly laugh with the blokes from The Biggest; take the family to the circus with iD; see sublime work by our greatest photojournalist Brian Brake; join the crowds on White Night; scream to your heart’s content in Horror; sign up to be part of a new Festival project Whanui and hear stunning music in The Bone Feeder, a uniquely New Zealand opera.

This is my last festival for Auckland. After almost 30 years in the festival business it's time to retire. Over the years I have been privileged to work with and present many great artists, and 2017 adds a few more to the list, such as the world’s greatest ballerina, Natalia Osipova. This year I also welcome back a couple of old friends like Jason Te Kare, Colin McColl, VOICES New Zealand Chamber Choir and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, whose work appears in Natalia Osipova & Guests. Along with my colleague of many years, the Festival’s CEO David Inns, and our Board and staff, I welcome you on this journey. We hope that after participating in Auckland Arts Festival 2017 you’ll take a few risks: start your own Revolutions and always call for Respect for all peoples. Carla van Zon, Artistic Director

Poropiti: Prophet is a meeting point of Tola Newberry’s innovative physical theatre and Mara TK’s maverick musical explorations. The story they tell is a meditation on utopian visions of preEuropean Aotearoa, the emergence of the Ma-ori prophets and present-day capitalism. Told in movement, song, sound and theatrical lyricism, it is a beautiful surrealist duet.

Featuring iconic characters from the classic era of NZ's favourite soap, with songs including Not In Guatemala Now, Stuck In A Love Triangle, and Cliffhanger, Shortland Street – The Musical will have you partying like it's 1992.

Firefly is an evocative multidisciplinary solo show written and performed by Sally Stockwell to her own live music, created in collaboration with Eden Mulholland. The show, directed by Andrew Foster, leads you on a sensorial trip back to the 70s and 80s through an autobiographical account of Stockwell’s childhood and the loss of her brother to drug addiction.

The wairua of Te Uru Rangi is caught wandering in a mystical torrent and the kaitiaki/spirit guardian of the Tongariro River must bring him home, but the river spirits battle for power and control. In this remarkable revisiting of Davy's early-Renaissance work, ancient mingles with modern as chamber choir, vocal soloists and brass are given new voice by a consortium of six New Zealand composers. Picturing Asia: Double Take pairs and contrasts the work of New Zealander Brian Brake (1927-1988), and American Steve McCurry (born 1950). Brake, best known for his Monsoon photo essay in Life magazine in 1961, inspired McCurry with that series. McCurry later became famous for his 1984 photograph of Sharbat Gula, known as Afghan Girl and published on the cover of National Geographic in June 1985. Not just pictures of Asia, these photographs are also invitations to ‘picture this’ – to find the stories within.

Te Tuhi presents In Transit (Arrival), a large-scale sculpture by artist Yona Lee that explores the structure and pulse of civilisation. This vast entangled structure, which you can walk through and sit within, is made of the stainless steel tube commonly used as barriers and handrails in train stations and airports around the world. Interwoven throughout the structure is a miscellany of everyday objects ranging from coat hangers to bus handles and from street signs to umbrellas. Through this elaborate construction, Lee provides an intriguing framework in which to consider the objects that surround us, the infrastructures that mobilise and the systems that control.

You’ll hear ice crack and drip and see water fall as you circumnavigate the Museum and take in images of the rare and sublime world of icebergs on all the walls of our city’s most mighty and iconic building. In Antarctica visual artist Joseph Michael in collaboration with composer Rhian Sheehan has created a cinematic spectacle like no other – a one-to-one scale of an Antarctic iceberg complete with sound score. The show runs on a 45 minute loop from 8.30pm until 11.00pm on Friday 24 Mar, Saturday 25 Mar and Sunday 26 Mar. Drop in and take a quick look or stay the whole time – it’s up to you.

This dynamic installation by three artists involved in eco-activism celebrates our native birdlife through contemporary visual art and sound. Halo refers to the halo effect of restored habitats and sanctuaries throughout New Zealand such as Auckland’s Tiritiri Matangi Island and Ark in the Park. During daylight hours and on White Night, artist/painter Paul Forrest will be hosting the installation and creating new work on site so the public can engage with the artist at work. Throughout the Festival he will be joined by other eco-activists promoting the value of conservation and restoration initiatives.

A multi-sensory installation, Between the Dog and the Wolf unfolds at dusk when the slowly fading light finds two young adults shut in a room in a summer house. In an interweaving of visual and aural systems of illusion, actors who never appear are heard speaking and moving among the audience, and an everyday scene takes on an otherworldly quality as it explores the unstable relationship between the world as it is and as we perceive it.

FAFSWAG: Disruption Vogue Ball FAFSWAG is a visual arts incubator for queer indigenous creatives working collaboratively to activate public space and disavow false representations of queer brown identities and bodies. Community-led, this is a creative platform for connectivity amongst young Pacific people navigating their unique identities within NZ’s urban jungles. For one night only on White Night, these LGBTQ artists will celebrate and document their lives in the form of a Vogue Ball.

Today, this late 19th-Century Italianate mansion, Pah Homestead, is again home to a collection: the Wallace Trust’s extensive holdings of contemporary New Zealand art.

For the period of the exhibition, the finely carved marble mantelpieces of the Homestead's Ballroom and Drawing Room will be populated with domestic accoutrements. Der Papa-lagi (The White Man) responds to German Erich Scheurmann’s 1921 book Der Papa-lagi. Kihara staged a social experiment in which Christian and Barbara Durst – German migrants living in Sa-moa for over 24 years – “go native” appearing dressed in full indigenous Sa-moan regalia in and around Apia. The series raises questions about Sa-moan nationalism and the politics of home and belonging, exploring ethical boundaries between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation. FRE E
