Founded in 1983, Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana is one of America’s premier flamenco companies with home bases in New York City and Durham, NC. We reach more than 30,000 people nationwide each year through inclusive programs that entertain, educate and empower. Our mission is to promote flamenco as a living art form and a vital part of Hispanic heritage; produce and perform high quality dance works; provide arts education programs that catalyze connections among young people; and nurture the next generations of flamenco artists and educators. We believe that the universal spirit of flamenco – with diverse influences from Roma, Arabic, Jewish, Spanish, African and Latin American cultures –gives this art form a unique power to build bridges between people.
CARLOTA SANTANA (Founder and Artistic Director) Hailed as “The Keeper of Flamenco” by Dance Magazine and honored by the King and Government of Spain with La Cruz de la Orden al Mérito Civil for “all the years of passion, excellence and dedication to the flamenco art,” Carlota Santana is an internationally renowned flamenco and Spanish dance artist and educator. In 1983, she co-founded Flamenco Vivo with Roberto Lorca; following his death from AIDS in 1987, she was determined to continue their work. In the decades since, she has led Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana’s growth with a mission to promote flamenco as a living art form and a vital part of Hispanic heritage. Ms. Santana created the company’s innovative arts-in-education program, integrating Spanish dance and culture with academic curricula, and has pioneered bilingual education initiatives. She was the driving force behind a series of unique special projects, including two flamenco symposia produced in collaboration with Duke University’s Dance Department, and the “100 Years of Flamenco in New York” exhibit mounted in partnership with The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. The first-ever curated museum show on flamenco in the U.S., “100 Years” ran for five months in The Vincent Astor Gallery at Lincoln Center; in his review, New York Times chief dance critic Alastair Macaulay praised the “vitality and pride” of the show, noting: “This vivid collection enriches our ideas of both this genre and this city.” Ms Santana has been a member of the faculty of Duke University.
EMILIO OCHANDO (Associate Artistic Director / Dancer) was born in Valencia and began his training at the age of nine. At 12 he collaborated with the National Ballet of Spain and at 16 moved to Madrid continuing his training and finishing his studies at The Royal Professional Conservatory of Madrid “Mariemma.” He has performed with the Companies of Domingo Ortega, Inma Ortega, Malucos Danza, Nuevo Ballet Español (Rojas and Rodríguez), and Aida Gómez and performed in various tablaos, nationally and internationally. In 2013 he created his own Company and produced works such as: 3DEUNO and SIROCO. He has choreographed for the Rafael Aguilar Company and for the production of “Oh Cuba” in Granada at the Generalife. He choreographed Romeo and Juliet for the EBB Company, and “Sin Duda” for the latest production of the Royal Professional Conservatory “Marienma.” He performs workshops and masterclasses traveling to the United States, Canada, London, and Europe. During his career he has received many awards: 1st prize in the international contest of Spanish dance and flamenco city of Almeria. First prize Talentmadrid 2016 and First prize in the Certamen de Baile Español y Flamenco in Madrid in 2016. In 2018, he was a candidate for the 2018 MAX awards for a best male performance and a best new show for SIROCO. Presently he is performing as guest artist and touring with his latest 3DEUNO and SIROCO shows. He has performed in festivals such as the Festival de Jerez, Suzanne Dellal Festival, and Flamenco Madrid Festival, among others.
FANNY ARA (Dancer) is an internationally-sought after and award-winning choreographer, performer and instructor. Her most dedicated worldwide fans especially credit her as one of the driving forces of flamenco today; an artist excelling in the full spectrum of flamenco, from the most traditional to the avant-garde. Fanny has been an invited artist in national and international festivals and has toured extensively in Canada, Central and South America, the Middle East, Africa, and throughout Europe. She has been distinguished since 2006 with nominations from the Isadora Duncan Dance Awards in the categories of Most Outstanding Individual Dancer, Most Outstanding Music, Ensemble, and Individual Performance for her project, Juncal Street, and Best Ensemble for her work with the San Francisco Opera in La Traviata. New
York’s Vilcek Foundation also awarded Fanny a prestigious finalist prize for “Creative Promise in Dance” in 2012. Fanny’s versatility in the art form of flamenco is manifested in her many artistic works. As Philip Gardner said of her performance at the Joyce Theater in New York City “My newest love is Fanny Ara...the captivating expressive qualities of Fanny’s upper body mesmerized us while her footwork dazzled both the eye and the ear...she soared into the upper most echelon of dance artists I have witnessed over the years.”
REBECA TOMAS (Dancer) began her formal dance training in Granada, Spain and later moved to Madrid, where she studied at the internationally renowned Flamenco Academy Amor de Dios. In 2006, she settled in New York and began performing with U.S.based companies such as Flamenco Vivo and Noche Flamenca. In 2010, she founded her own company, A Palo Seco, for which she continues to direct and choreograph. For her choreographic work, Tomas has received support from Arts Westchester, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, the Jerome Foundation, Connecticut Office of the Arts, and she is a two-time recipient of the NYFA Fellowship in Choreography (2013 & 2019). She was selected by Arts Westchester as one of 50 top artists in Westchester County, and she received first place at the XIII Concurso Nacional de Flamenco in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Tomas works as a dancer, instructor, and choreographer throughout the country. Past projects include Lincoln Center's “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown,” R.evolución Latina's Choreographer's Festival, and Yaron Zilberman’s “A Late Quartet.” She has performed throughout the U.S. at venues such as NY SummerStage, (le) Poisson Rouge, the Chicago Flamenco Festival, Eastman School of Music, the Pocantico Center (Rockefeller Brothers Fund), Flushing Town Hall, and the New Victory Theater. A firm believer in Arts-Education, she conducts workshops, residencies, and Lecture Demonstrations to students of all ages and backgrounds throughout the country. She has been described as “awesomely fiery” (NYTimes) and “a postcard image of the feminine Flamenco dancer” (Kansas City Metropolis).
JOSE MONTES (Dancer) began his studies at the Conservatorio Profesional de Danza “Antonio Ruiz Soler” (Seville), graduating with the specialty in Spanish Dance, and later he became part of the Centro Andaluz de Danza, under the direction of Rubén Olmo. In 2019 he continued his academic training at the Fundación de Arte y Flamenco “Cristina Heeren,” with scholarships for three consecutive years by “Fundación Cajasol” and “TreadRight Foundation.” Has studied with artists, such as: Javier Barón, Luisa Palicio, Antonio Molina “El Choro”, Eva Yerbabuena, and Rafael Campallo. He produced his own show, “CIUDAD DE PLATA” in April 2021 in Seville and traveled with it to Vienna. This same year, with “La Compañía B,” he premiered the show “RECITAL” in the Festival Flamenco "Verde, que te quiero, Verde.” He performed in “CON BATA Y MANTÓN” produced by the Fundación Cristina Heeren, at the Teatro Real de Madridn 2022. Between 2023 and 2024, he undertook four tours throughout Mexico, and in 2025, he traveled to Riyadh with a production of “La Pecaora” for the JOY Awards. He has toured world-wide both with companies and as solo artist. Currently, he works in various flamenco venues, including: Tablao “Los Porches” (Madrid), Tablao Cordobés (Barcelona), Tablao “Las Setas” (Seville), Juncal Tablao (Mexico City). He has also performs at flamenco clubs such as: Torres Macarena (Seville), Peña Flamenca “Curro de Utrera” (Seville), Peña Flamenca and Peña Flamenca de Moguer (Huelva). In March 2020, he received first prize at the 4th “Ciudad de Jerez” Tablao Dance Competition, and in April 2021, he received first prize at the “Tabanco a la Feria” Dance Competition.
ANDREA “LA FLOR” GONZALEZ
(Dancer) is a Flamenco artist, choreographer, and instructor based in Houston, Texas. A San Antonio native, she brings over 30 years of performance experience across Flamenco, ballet folklórico de México, ballet, jazz, tap, modern, Afrikan, and contemporary dance. For the past 15 years, her focus has been Flamenco. Andrea began her professional career with Flamenco Fuego de San Antonio and studied Flamenco at the University of New Mexico, performing with Gbotsui Afrikan Dance Troupe and Blythe Eden Dance Company. Since 2021, she has toured nationally with Solero Flamenco. In 2024, Andrea won the grand prize at Flamenco Vivo Carlota
Santana’s Flamenco Certamen USA, earning a residency at Amor de Dios in Spain, attendance at the 34º Certamen de Coreografía de Danza Española y Flamenco, and a performance at Madrid’s renowned Tablao Las Carboneras. Her recent choreographic works include La Llorona –Soleá por Bulerías (Barnstorm Dance Fest 2025), la resistencia (Mind the Gap 35), and a variation of La Llorona (Texas Folklife Apprenticeship Program, 2025). Andrea continues to explore and share the depth of Flamenco through performance, education, and cross-cultural collaboration.
JOSE MORENO
(Dancer / Percussionist / Guitarist / Singer)
Born into a family of famous flamenco artists Estrella Morena (dancer) and Pepe de Málaga (singer), Jose began his flamenco career during his childhood years. His debut was at the famous Tablao flamenco “Costa Vasca”. Jose continued his studies with the Great Manolete, Farruquito, and Andres Marin and Cajon Percussion with Manuel Soler. Jose has performed with many companies around the world, and with distinguished artists such as: The Great Manolete, Joaquin Ruiz, Pastora Galvan, Antonio Rey, Pedro Cortes, Jose Valle “Chuscales”, Jose Cortes “Pansequito”, Roberto Castellon, Jose Luis De La Paz, Juanito Pascual, Jesus Montoya, Zorongo Flamenco, Flamenco Vivo, La Tania, Miguel Vargas, Nelida Tirado, Antonio Hidalgo, Curro Cueto, Gonzalo Grau, Edwin Aparicio, Amparo Heredia, Raquel Heredia, Antonio Granjero, Angel Muñoz, Charo Espino, and many other outstanding performers. In 2001, Jose choreographed and performed a collaborative work with his mother Estrella Morena, and flamenco singer Carmen Linares with the New World Symphony Orquestra at Lincoln Theater. In 2007, Jose performed with Isabel Pantoja, and with David Bisbal in “Premios lo Nuestro.” In 2010 performed in the 7th annual Panama Jazz Festival, and at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City, in 2013 in “Zorro” The Musical at the Alliance Theatre. In 2015 the TV series called “Los Descendientes de Andalucia” produced by Canal Sur in Seville, Spain, at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the 2015-2016 season of “Carmen” at The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. for the Washington National Opera, The NYC Winter Jazzfest in

MANUEL SOTO (Singer) was born in Jerez de la Frontera in the heart of a family of artists from the Barrio de Santiago. His professional career began at the age of 10, as a flamenco dancer in the Dance Academy of Manuela Carpio. At 16, he left flamenco to become the vocalist of a Rock band called "Plashe"
After several years of academic training, he returned to the world of art to devote himself to singing. He has worked with the pianist Rosario Montoya "La Reina Gitana" in her shows from 2003- 2009 highlighting the performances in the World Fair of Flamenco (Seville), Caixa Forum (Barcelona), Fiesta de la Buleria (Jerez) and X Festival de Jerez. In 2008, he toured the Italian peninsula with Maria Luisa Sereno Lozano "Chiqui de Jerez” and traveled to the United States with José Porcel in the show “Libre Albedrío,” performing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Bronx Museum of the Arts. He has performed with: Carlos Carbonell's Company participating in the Festival de Lille (France 2008) and in the XIII edition of the Festival de Jerez (2009), with Antonio and Silvia Perujo and in the Company of Andrés Peña and Pilar Ogalla. From 2019 until today, he is part of “Maestros Flamenco Online” directed by Manuel Betanzos, an online platform to teach flamenco courses worldwide. He is the official cantaor of the bailaor Eduardo Guerrero. In 2022 he was singer for the bailaor Juan Fernandez’s “De los Puertos” in the Festival de Jerez and performs in tablaos Casa de la Memoria, El Arenal, Corral de la Morería, and Casa Patas.
RICARDO SANCHEZ is a Flamenco guitarist, composer and educator born in Jalisco, Mexico and based in New York City. He has been a performer and a Musical Director with worldrenowned artists such: Juan Gabriel, Emanuel, José Mora, Alvera De León, Susana Harp, among others. Ricardo has composed, directed and performed with musical projects in major flamenco and music festivals
across the Americas, including Festival Internacional Cervantino
“FlorAndaluza Raíz Guerrerense” (Mexico), Canada’s Virtual Victoria Flamenco Festival. Deeply committed to educating the next generation of flamenco guitarists, Ricardo leads workshops and classes focused on both artistic development and technical mastery.
JOANNA REYES (Production Stage Manager) is a dedicated stage manager with over six years of professional experience in the theater arts. A proud graduate of California State University, Los Angeles, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theater Arts, laying a solid foundation for her successful career. Her passion for the theater extends beyond just managing productions— Joanna has worked on a wide variety of performances, including dance shows, magic acts, musical theater, children’s theater, and other theatrical productions. Throughout her career, Joanna has developed a reputation for her strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to coordinate complex productions. Whether backstage or in the field, she ensures everything runs smoothly, from rehearsals to opening night, making sure all technical elements align seamlessly with the artistic vision. In addition to her technical expertise, Joanna’s love for theater is fueled by a deep passion for traveling and experiencing different cultures. She views each project as an opportunity not only to contribute to the arts but also to broaden her understanding of the world through diverse artistic expressions. As she continues her journey in the theater world, Joanna remains committed to creating magical experiences for audiences and supporting the artists and performers she works with. Her extensive experience, coupled with her unyielding dedication to the craft, makes her a valuable asset in any theater production.
