For the last few years, we have published our annual Home for the Summer magazine, showcasing the lifestyle and beautiful properties that make up the resort home communities of Southwest Michigan and Northwest Indiana. This year, our goal is the same – to share the stories of local businesses and highlight what makes this part of the Midwest so special. But we’ve given the magazine a new name. Here’s why. While these communities have long been popular vacation destinations for Chicagoans, their appeal isn’t limited to summer getaways. That was never more apparent than when COVID-19 hit this spring. When the outbreak began, many Chicagoans chose to spend the Stay At Home period at their second homes in Michigan and Indiana. Meanwhile, many other potential homebuyers were inspired to start exploring their options in the area. So it’s more than just a home for the summer… for some people it may very well be a new permanent home or a year-round retreat that has everything they’ve been dreaming of. Another notable change this year is that we won’t be hosting the open house tour that previously coincided with the release of the magazine. While prospective buyers will still have the opportunity to view featured properties in-person, showings will be held by appointment and with extra precautions to ensure everyone’s comfort and safety. So, why Lake & Local? With @properties’ expertise along the shores of Lake Michigan and our commitment to serving our local communities, we thought it was only fitting. While there’s no shortage of popular breweries in Michigan, few offer the option to taste nearly a dozen handcrafted beers while watching the sun set over protected wetlands.

That was one of the many attractions the Sima family had in mind when they opened Ghost Isle Brewery last year on a 3.5-acre site in New Buffalo. The family has owned the land since the 1950s, when their grandfather purchased hundreds of acres that were subsequently donated to the Chikaming Open Lands and named the Louis J. Sima Great Lakes Marsh. “Building Ghost Isle Brewery was the best use of the property,” says Elizabeth Sima, who co-owns the brewery with her husband, Jim, and son, Bob. With sweeping views of wetlands, customers can soak up the natural beauty while hanging around a fire pit and sipping a freshly poured beer. Talk about a brew with a view.
Ghost Isle’s head brewer, Joe Hinman, and Bob Sima, who is a certified master brewer, collaborate on the range of beers you can enjoy at the live-edge walnut bar. Keep things light with the New Buffalo Pilsner with hints of biscuit flavor or get a four-beer flight and sample a few 5-ounce pours to find a favorite. Not in the mood for beer? There’s a full bar serving wine, cider, and cocktails, many comprising spirits from local distilleries. “Our beer selection the first year leaned toward lighter styles that appeal to most customers,” says Elizabeth. “Because of the positive response, we will keep our most popular recipes on tap while looking forward to Joe’s skill and creativity in new brews.”
With sweeping views of wetlands, customers can soak up the natural beauty while sipping a freshly poured beer. The 10-barrel brewery underwent some renovations in the winter, including a new patio bar, more garage doors for the enclosed patio, and artificial turf around the outdoor fire pit. Head chef Matt Lindsey and sous chef Dylan Kowalewicz offer a menu with a range of items like grilled or fried jumbo wings; slow-cooked baby back ribs; fried walleye; gumbo; an Angus Beef burger; and more, including vegetarian options. The owners at MAK Salon & Spa know a thing or two about a day of pampering. Seasoned veterans in the beauty and wellness industries, Maggie Martin and Kelsey Holzer first met in college and later brought their expertise to Southwest Michigan. What started as a salon soon evolved into a multi-faceted, head-to-toe experience at MAK, where clients can get their hair, makeup, and nails done; experience a wonderfully relaxing therapeutic massage; or take a closer look at their nutrition. Located on Red Arrow Highway, MAK is a laidback getaway in Harbert. The co-owners have a combined 29 years of experience, as Martin heads up the salon’s hair, nail, and makeup services, and Holzer focuses on massage and nutritional therapy. When it comes to ultimate relaxation, Holzer says clients favor ashiatsu massage, a form of massage where she performs long strokes with her feet, using bars on the ceiling to transfer and balance her weight. “Using my feet gives me the leverage I need to get really deep into the back to relieve the most tension and stress,” says Holzer. “It’s a type of massage that everyone can benefit from.”

Holzer is a certified Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner through the Nutritional Therapy Association, and specifically works with clients to get to the root causes of the signs and symptoms that many people experience as a result of food. She often sees clients with stomach issues, bloating, anxiety, chronic headaches, inflammation, and weight loss or gain, and uses

Enjoy 96 acres of native spring flowers and a variety of landscapes at Bluhm County Park. The park is also home to a pond and several multi-use trails for all skill levels, including one through the Bluhm East Woods.
Creek Ridge County Park allows visitors to venture around its entire trail system through a series of boardwalks. At 112 acres, the park has a variety of wildlife and runs along the tranquil Trail Creek.

Experience quiet hiking trails and an abundance of beautiful wildflowers throughout Warren Woods State Park’s 311 acres. Trees tower overhead, exceeding 100 feet in height and providing a shady and comfortable environment for your outdoor journey. The 3.5-mile trail also offers scenic views of the Galien River.
The 86-acre park sits along the Galien River and has elevated walkways that showcase its incredible flora and fauna. The trail rises above a tree canopy and leads to a 60-foot tower with striking views of the marsh. Those wanting to see the marsh at eye-level can take the steps down to the water and follow the boardwalk to the river.

Named after the famed landscape artist, Jens Jensen Preserve is 25 acres and features towering oak, maple, and beech trees. The preserve is adjacent to the Pepperidge Dunes Sanctuary, offering even more natural space to explore.
FRIENDSHIP BOTANIC GARDENS MICHIGAN CITY
Spend the day overlooking beautiful flowers, Lake Lucerne, and Trail Creek as you hike the wooded trails of Friendship Botanic Gardens. Located within Pottawattamie Park, the gardens spill over 105 acres of land and boast all sorts of wildlife and nature. Visitors must pay for their visit over the phone upon arrival.
GLASSMAN PARK NEW BUFFALO
Also stretched along the Galien River in New Buffalo, Glassman Park has ample recreational opportunities. The 47-acre park features a kayak launch, a trail, a zen labyrinth maze, and several lookout points.

Once a railroad bed, the Kal-Haven Trail State Park is now a popular trail passing through several small towns and points of interest between South Haven and Kalamazoo. At 33 miles, the trail is a great place for hikers and bicyclists to experience the beauty of Southwest Michigan.
This park has been a nature enthusiast’s staple for several decades. Located off the shores of Lake Michigan, the iconic Indiana Dunes are made up of 2,182 acres and include a variety of plants and animals. Several trails wind their way through the park and range from easy to rugged.
Located within the Indiana Dunes National Park, this loop trail is part of a 3.9-mile network of trails and crosses the Little Calumet River. A boardwalk guides you through wet bottomlands and leads to a hardwood forest and pine plantation.

WHAT’S UP WITH @? It’s been 20 years since Mike Golden & Thad Wong started @properties. What began as a four-person boutique brokerage firm has since become the largest residential real estate company in the resort-home region of

Southwest Michigan and Northwest Indiana, as well as the entire Chicago metro area. Here’s a glimpse at how the duo transformed @properties from a spirited startup into a real estate leader.
How did @properties come to be? Mike: Back in the mid ‘90s, Thad and I were selling real estate at a small Chicago brokerage firm where we specialized in new construction and loft conversion developments. We decided to partner up, and we’ve been at it ever since. Thad: We were generating a ton of business for the firm, but we weren’t receiving any marketing or administrative support. Ultimately, we realized that if we could offer agents the same level of support that we were giving our developer clients, we would have a strong value proposition that would attract agents and allow us to grow a traditional brokerage business. So we started @properties.

INNOVATION
In less than 10 years, @properties became the #1 brokerage firm in Chicago, overtaking other firms in the city that had been in business for decades. How did you do it? Thad: Our focus has always been on providing the best services and resources to our agents, buyers, and sellers. Early on, a lot of it came down to marketing. And because we were new in an industry that was very established, we knew we would have to market at the highest level. Over the last 10 years, we’ve continued to build the marketing piece while focusing heavily on the development of technology. Mike: Fortunately, we had this newconstruction experience where the marketing was very sophisticated. We committed to bringing that same level of sophistication to all of our materials and that really resonated with agents and consumers. By 2013, @properties was the largest independent brokerage firm in Illinois. Then you expanded to the resort-home markets of Michigan, Indiana, and Wisconsin. What was the reasoning behind that?
Mike: The housing market was recovering and more of our Chicagoland clients were looking at vacation properties in areas like Harbor Country, St. Joseph, and Lake Geneva. It was a natural progression for us. Thad: Having the largest market share in Chicago and surrounding areas like the North Shore, we knew we had a huge network of potential vacation homebuyers. We were confident that we could cross-market to our clients very efficiently, so that eventually led us here and spurred growth. What have the last few years looked like for @properties, and what’s ahead? Thad: Over the last few years we’ve made a significant investment in pl@tform™ – our proprietary technology suite. The applications are primarily broker-facing at this point, but we are preparing the launch of our consumer
app. I think we have a very realistic goal of making pl@tform™ the premier end-to-end technology for real estate brokerage. Mike: We’ve also been growing our geographic footprint. We’ve entered Chicago’s western suburbs in a big way, and the synergies between that region and this one are great. Everything that we’re doing right now – whether it’s a new office, a new investment, or a new technology or marketing tool – is aimed at putting our agents and clients in the best position for success. TIMES ROLL Two summers ago, Dan and Leah Peat began exploring the idea of opening a new taproom for their growing cider business, Peat’s Original Cider of Paw Paw. They had just seen a potential space in Bridgman when they drove by an old bowling alley along Red Arrow Highway in Stevensville. It was the 1960s-era Lakeshore Lanes, whose vintage sign sported a large black bowling ball that you couldn’t miss. “The idea to buy this place started as a joke,” Dan Peat says. “My wife, who is in marketing, said, ‘Wouldn’t it be funny if there was an apple on top of the sign instead of a bowling ball?’ We laughed and then saw it was for sale.” The Peats then teamed up with new partners Josh and Tiffany Cosner, appealed to the local city council, and got approved to buy the property for their new taproom. After preserving much of the well-maintained retro interior design and updating other parts that hadn’t weathered the decades, the foursome officially opened Peat’s Cider Social in March. With 16 bowling lanes, Peat’s Cider Social aims to attract locals and seasonal visitors who want to partake in the family-friendly pastime year-round. The Peats will continue to produce much of the cider at
the 200-acre family farm in Paw Paw and offer a rotating selection of Peat’s hard cider and seltzer.
In addition to their flagship hard cider The Huntsman, guests can taste the tarttangy grapefruit-ginger Birdwatcher; the blueberry-infused Aviator; the Cooper Collection, which includes rye and bourbon barrel-aged flavors; and more. In June they released a limited batch Watermelon Mint hard seltzer. Non-alcoholic beverages are available as well. The sprawling four-acre lot has ample parking and a new patio space for comfortable open-air gatherings. The owners have other plans to take advantage of the vast outdoor space, including building out a space for outdoor events like weddings. But that’s down the road. For now, they are excited to welcome groups to their new space to enjoy bowling with a few pints of their local cider. Just look for the big red apple on the sign off Red Arrow Highway.
