Uncompressed 4K 60Hz 4:4:4 and 1Gb LAN We are pleased to announce the launch of the first HDBaseT™3 matrix product to the market Using HDBaseT™3 technology, these powerful HDBaseT™ matrix support uncompromised 4K 60Hz 4:4:4 resolutions over distances up to 100m over a CAT6A. The new HMX88-18G and HMX44-18G come into their own with advanced audio features specifically designed for maximising the integration of AV sources in the modern home. Enhanced audio routing is achieved through the integrated audio matrix. This enables the audio from displays (via HDMI ARC or Optical S/PDIF), and all other sources to be embedded and routed through the system at the users discretion. The inclusion of a 1Gb Ethernet channel allows for LAN serving to all HDBT outputs / zones as required, IR and RS-232 pass-through, advanced EDID management, and PoC provide the ultimate flexibility. The combination of these technology features enable our installation partners the ability to create a truly immersive AV experience throughout the home.

BUILDING THE FUTURE, INSPIRED BY THE PAST A recent trip to the town of Glastonbury got me thinking. And no, not about the festival (which, as many will know, isn’t actually held in Glastonbury at all) or even the famous Tor. Instead, I was struck by something equally impressive but far less talked about—the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey. Even in their current state, they are nothing short of breathtaking. Walking among the remains, you start to grasp just how vast and complex this place once was. The sheer scale, the intricacy of the design, the ambition of it all—it’s awe-inspiring. And that got EI wondering: what lies behind truly impressive results? It’s easy to credit technological advancements or cutting-edge methods—and, of course, these are crucial. But they are just the building blocks. What really makes the difference? Teamwork, a shared vision and a commitment to quality. The Abbey wasn’t just a collection of stones arranged in a pleasing pattern; it was a product of human ingenuity, collaboration, determination and a belief in something. In our world of smart homes, we’re not building vast stone structures to stand for
centuries, but we are shaping the homes of the future. The tools at our disposal: automation, seamless integration, highquality AV, and perhaps increasingly AI— are evolving at speed, helping us push boundaries like never before. But just like the master builders of old, our success doesn’t rest solely on the technology we use. It’s our creativity, problem-solving ability, and shared commitment to delivering excellence that will define the future of this industry. Even in an era where AI is making waves, the human touch remains irreplaceable. We are the visionaries. We are the ones pushing the limits of what’s possible. Just as the builders of Glastonbury Abbey looked beyond their time to create something extraordinary, we can embrace that same spirit of ambition and collaboration. Because at the heart of every truly great achievement—whether in the past or today—is a group of people working together towards something bigger than themselves. So, as we move forward, let’s not just rely on the latest tech to shape our industry. Let’s harness our collective imagination, passion, and drive to build something remarkable. After all, that’s what has always made the difference.

NEWS ATLONA LOCKS DOWN PRICING AS TARIFFS LOOM Atlona, a Panduit company, has applied the spirit of its Q1 price reductions to the global concerns surrounding the looming tariffs on domestic imports. Atlona says its message is far clearer than the fog that has surrounded the message on tariffs: Q2 prices will remain unchanged, customers can plan and design projects with confidence, knowing that Atlona will hold prices steady through the end of June. Atlona lowered price points on 33 products across three key product lines in January following a surge in parts availability that reduced its manufacturing costs. The positive response to that announcement partially inspired today’s decisive action to hold steady on pricing and resist the urge to react in ways that affect costs for customers, says the maker.
“We understand that unexpected price increases can dramatically affect the project budget, particularly for projects that have already been quoted at pre-tariff rates,” says Jamey Swigert. Executive Director, Atlona. “Atlona has a strong reputation for delivering reliability through products and support services that help people work, learn and collaborate more efficiently. That reliability extends to maintaining business-friendly pricing in the face of uncertainty. We will take a measured approach as conditions evolve, ensuring our customers can move forward without disruption.” Atlona atlona.com

CEDIA VISITS US CAPITOL TO TALK TARIFFS CEDIA recently took to Washington, D.C. for its second annual Smart Home Day on Capitol Hill. Together with the Board of Directors, manufacturer CEOs and industry leaders from around the world, CEDIA advocated for key policies impacting the smart home industry while simultaneously emphasising the work of technology integrators. Throughout the day, CEDIA representatives participated in a series of bipartisan meetings with members of Congress and their staff to address crucial legislative issues, including: A Return of Exclusions on Tariffs – As was done in the first Trump term, any trade policy actions should have an exclusion process to support the overall strength of the U.S. economy, create an environment that maintains U.S. jobs in the technical trades and sustain low prices for essential products and services. Advancement of Technology Innovation – Important initiatives of the ‘CHIPS and Science Act’ include bringing the semiconductor supply chains back to the U.S., providing greater technology investment, creating new jobs, supporting American innovation, ensuring supply chain resiliency and protecting our national security.

Support for Middle-Class Jobs – The ‘Freedom to Invest in Tomorrow’s Workforce Act’ (H.R. 1151 / S. 756) would expand the use of 529 savings accounts to cover workforce training and credentialing programs, directly benefiting the individual workers and the smart home technology industry. “This was our second Smart Home Day on Capitol Hill, and the impact of rallying together in person cannot be overstated,” said CEDIA Global President and CEO, Daryl Friedman. “With changes in government and evolving policy landscapes, it’s more important than ever
that we proactively engage with lawmakers to shape the future of our industry.” Five CEDIA advocacy groups engaged in positive discussions with multiple key lawmakers from around the country. The legislators were especially receptive to CEDIA’s feedback due to their prior support for the ‘CHIPS and Science Act’ and co-sponsorship of the ‘Freedom to Invest in Tomorrow’s Workforce Act.’ CEDIA cedia.org

ESSENTIAL BLUSTREAM
The DMP168 has been a key release
BLUSTREAM AT 10: A DECADE OF INNOVATION, RELIABILITY AND AV EXCELLENCE Phil Davis, EMEA Managing Director at Blustream, underlines the progress and strong reputation the company has built during its decade of existence. This year marks a major milestone for Blustream, our 10th anniversary and I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve achieved. A decade ago, we set out with a clear vision: to deliver dependable AV signal management solutions that the professional installation market could truly rely on. Fast forward to today and that vision has grown into something much bigger than we imagined. Blustream has become one of the most trusted and respected brands in the global AV industry. From day one, our mission has been focused and unwavering; create high-performance AV distribution products that solve real-world challenges for both residential and commercial integrators. We’ve never chased trends for the sake of it. Instead, we’ve listened carefully to what our customers need and we’ve built our roadmap around solving the problems installers face every single day. That installer first mindset
has earned us incredible loyalty and trust over the past 10 years, and it’s something we’re incredibly proud of. Reliability is at the heart of everything we do. Whether it’s a large-scale commercial fit-out or a bespoke home cinema, integrators know that Blustream products will perform when it matters most. Our range now includes everything from HDBaseT and AV over IP distribution, to HDMI, fibre, power management and an increasingly powerful line-up of audio solutions. Across the board, our goal is simple: to deliver robust, real-world solutions that installers can count on.
CONTINUED PROGRESS We’re not ones to rest on our laurels. In fact, we’ve used our 10th year as a launchpad for more innovation. In just the past six months, we’ve introduced over 30 new products, clear
evidence of the energy and investment we continue to put into R&D. Our Technical Director, Aiden Jones, puts it perfectly, “Innovation at Blustream always starts with listening.” The way people consume content is constantly evolving and so are the technologies that support it. But it’s the feedback from our installers that really drives us forward. That’s what shapes our product direction and it always will. You can see that philosophy in action in our latest audio solutions. We’ve worked hard to deliver products that are compact, powerful, and truly installer-friendly. One standout is the DMP168, a 16x8 audio matrix processor loaded with DSP functionality. As our CTO, Toby Leader, explains, “It’s one of the most flexible audio products we’ve built.” And it’s already proving its worth in several installation environments”.

ESSENTIAL BLUSTREAM downmixing and Dante outputs. Designed with the marine AV market in mind, this is a one-box solution offering 4K switching, Dolby and DTS downmixing, and Dante audio distribution, all in a sleek form factor. It’s a direct response to requests from our partners and a great example of how we continue to collaborate closely with the installer community.
SMART POWER
The SW42DA is aimed primarily at the marine market
Then there’s our new ultra-compact amplifiers, the NPA20ANA and NPA20ARC, featuring our proprietary I2DClass technology. Despite their size, they pack a punch with 2x10W stereo output and exceptional clarity. With multiple inputs and full IP, RS232 and IR control, they are perfect for smaller zones or
remote display installs. Aiden sums it up best, “They’re exactly what installers need, compact, reliable, and flexible. And with I2DClass, we’ve raised the bar, these amplifiers need to be heard to be believed.” Another exciting addition is the SW42DA, a 4x2 HDMI switch with integrated 9.1 audio
As part of our 10th-year celebration, we’ve also launched our new Smart Power Solutions, a whole new product category designed to improve system control, uptime and serviceability. Our IP-enabled power solutions provide remote management, real-time monitoring, and smart reboot functions to reduce downtime and boost efficiency. A key product here is the PWR8VDC, which features one IEC C14 inlet and eight variable voltage outputs, perfect for powering low-consumption devices with precision and peace of mind. Ultimately, Smart Power is about infrastructure that gives you confidence, making everything else in the system run smoother. While this anniversary is a time to reflect, it’s also a moment to look ahead. We’re more focused than ever on product development, expanding our global presence and embracing new technologies as the AV world continues to evolve. Over the past year, we’ve grown our team, launched more products than ever before and doubled down on our commitment to training and support. And honestly, the most exciting part? We’re just getting started. As we look to the next chapter, I want to personally thank all our partners, customers, and colleagues who’ve helped us reach this incredible milestone. Blustream has always stood for innovation driven by installer feedback, rock-solid performance, and products that just work out of the box. That’s what built our reputation, and that’s what we’ll keep delivering. Here’s to the next decade of AV excellence. Blustream blustream.co.uk

Since 1998, the company has been designing and installing smart home technology, from home security, to bespoke cinema rooms. Company headquarters is in Kendal, not far from the Jolly Josh Centre. It was a fortuitous meeting between Jit and Ian Morrish that ensured Majik House would be completing their third project for Together for Cinema (TFC), a multipurpose room that could be used as a cinema room, quiz night space and even a place to hold presentations. The Jolly Josh Centre in Rochdale is a lifeline for families of children with complex medical needs and physical disabilities. The centre offers a whole range of opportunities, from the hydrotherapy pool, to parent and carer sessions. The aim of the centre is to inspire inclusion and the team do this by delivering fully inclusive facilities for families to enjoy together. The centre is just a few streets away from Jit’s home, so when he heard about it, he knew he had to get involved. The possibility of
16 MAY 2025
agreeing to a third TFC project meant he would have to make some calls, so Jit couldn’t agree straight away. It’s hard to understand how the director of such a busy company can make time to help, but as Jit explains, when the outcomes are as positive as they are with a TFC project, it’s hard to say no. “I saw Ian at an Essential Install event in October, so I went over to say hi and he just happened to mention that there was a project coming up in Rochdale,” Jit continues. “Having already completed two projects with Together for Cinema, I knew I would need a little help. Luckily my friend and supplier Darren Power, of PowerCom in Littleborough, was really keen to support the project, so we decided to make it a joint effort. Being local, too, Darren was really excited to help.” Knowing the AV industry is full of such willing and passionate people makes TFC Founder and MD Ian Morrish’s job that bit easier. The Jolly Josh centre is TFC’s 53rd installation and each one relies on the generosity of installers,
/Essentialinstall
@Install_mag
engineers, manufacturers and designers, plus many more people working in advance of the projects to get things moving. Knowing that TFC can add a little bit of luxury when every penny counts is a real bonus, as Ian recalls. “A cinema room like this would usually be an expensive outlay that couldn’t be justified,” he says. “The equipment list must be high-quality and be capable of delivering great results in a challenging space. There’s always the worry that we might not be able to source everything on the list but, as ever, everyone we spoke to couldn’t wait to donate. The level of industry support really is something to be hugely grateful for.” There’s a lot to consider when designing a cinema room for a care centre like Jolly Josh. In a residential cinema room, the space is usually purpose-built, or intended solely as a place to watch movies and relax. For Jolly Josh, every inch of space is a well-used resource, so Jit and Darren had their work cut out to make sure the room could do everything it needed to.
/essential-install-mag
essentialinstall.com
ESSENTIAL TOGETHER FOR CINEMA He says, “Darren and I went to chat with Liz Dodd, the lead fundraiser at Jolly Josh. We measured up the cinema space and, due to the medical equipment in the room, there were some tight angles to accommodate. We knew we would need a projector and screen, but we were able to specify a low-profile bracket and the correct sized projector which could sit exactly where it was needed, but wouldn’t get in the way of the hoists. Then it was just a case of phoning through my wish list to Ian and he took care of the rest!” The process of specification to installation took around eight weeks, with the actual installation being completed in just two days. “One of the great things about this space was the excitement on everyone’s faces when they realised how easy it is to use!” Jit continues. “When we’re designing high-end, bespoke cinema rooms in residential homes, a single remote control for the atmospherics, audio and screens are pretty common. They’re often a sign of how bespoke the system is. When budgets are tight, these finishing touches can sometimes get pushed down the list of priorities, so delivering a ‘one button’ solution for Jolly Josh was a fantastic outcome.” Ease of use is key for a TFC installation. Often the installers will never meet the clients who use the space, so ensuring the technology is easy to understand and accessible is a high priority. It was for this reason Jit ensured the system is a single button push. The projector
screen is electronic and rolls up completely, and the loudspeakers are invisible, so there is nothing in the way of the hoists. The hidden facilities mean the room can still be used in a variety of ways, but with a few small changes can become a magical space for relaxing together. It’s a solution that has worked incredibly well for the centre and made the project extremely satisfying for Jit and his team. “It is so nice to put a smile on people’s faces,” Jit concludes. “The centre is pretty open
plan, so working around all the different uses was a bit challenging, but it was so rewarding. It has been brilliant to be able to give something back to our local community. There are so many charities that could benefit from a Together for Cinema installation, so I try to spread the word as much as I can. It is a fantastic thing to be part of.” If you would like to hear more about the work that Together for Cinema is doing, please email Ian Morrish directly: ian@togetherforcinema.co.uk.

We’re over the moon to unveil our brand-new cinema screen, complete with immersive surround sound, all thanks to the fantastic support of Together for Cinema and Majik House! This incredible gift unlocks a world of possibilities for our families, with children living with complex medical needs and physical disabilities. From sensory-friendly movie afternoons to feelgood film nights, we can now offer experiences that many of our families simply couldn’t access before due to restrictions such as changing place facilities, hoists and space for equipment and wheelchairs. Bringing the cinema to Jolly Josh breaks down these barriers and enables us to offer even more sessions at our centre. Your generosity doesn’t just provide entertainment, it creates moments of joy, inclusion, and community that will be treasured forever. Thank you, Together for Cinema and Majik House, for helping us make Jolly Josh a place where every child can feel the magic of the big screen and a place to call home. Liz Dodd Fundraiser, Jolly Josh

ESSENTIAL PULSE CINEMAS AND INVISION UK
EPSON DELIVERS EXCELLENCE, VALUE AND VERSATILITY Chris Sullivan, Account Manager and Paul Wilson, Business Manager, Epson UK, provide a rundown of the significant capabilities, flexibility and serious support on offer for Epson projectors. Epson has a compelling and recently updated range of projector offerings. Launched at EI Live! last year, the EH-QL Series delivers a brighter, high-performance 4K laser range with a full suite of interchangeable lenses from 0.34:1 (UST lens ELPLX02S) through to standard and longer throw options for all install scenarios. The range is perfect for use in high ambient light areas such as media rooms that are gaining in popularity. These options also offer strong flexibility where the depth of the room is restrictive, but the customer would still like the advantages of a larger image. This range
18 MAY 2025
also comes with a sleek new chassis complete with customisable covers and casing designed to work within the customer’s décor, matching any aesthetic ambition. There are two models. The EH-QL7000 delivers 10,000 lumens, is based on a 4K laser engine, and has an RRP of £20,999.99 inc. VAT, plus lens. The EH-QL3000 delivers 6,000 lumens, is also a 4K laser projector, and is priced at £12,799.99 inc. VAT, plus lens. Both projectors are available in a black or white chassis or with an attractive optional ‘champagne’ coloured top casing.
/Essentialinstall
@Install_mag
Also released at EI Live!, the EH-QB1000 delivers 3,300 lumens and is a fixed lens 4K laser projector offering HDR10+ compatibility at a keen RRP of £4,799.99 inc. VAT. This unit delivers stunning performance for dedicated cinema use, including dynamic tone mapping, low latency functionality for enhanced gaming, and increased brightness versus the EH-LS12000B model. This unit has white and black chassis options. Also offering an affordable option, the EH-LS12000B has 2,700 lumens performance over a fixed lens 4K laser model with HDR10+ in a black chassis, delivered at RRP £3,999.99 inc. VAT. This is a really popular model with a strong track record. Installers highlight the powered lens flexibility as a particular strength, with 10 lens memory presets allowing customers to switch between aspect ratios when toggling between TV and movie sources. Offering incredible performance and flexibility for the price tag, the EH-LS11000W is a 2,500-lumen fixed lens 4K laser projector with HDR10+ in a white chassis (RRP £3,399.99 inc. VAT). The white livery is a good match for when the unit needs to be more obvious in the room to fit in with décor.

ESSENTIAL PULSE CINEMAS AND INVISION UK
The EH-QS100m is a 4,500-lumen fixed lens UST projector with HDR10, 4K enhanced 1080p performance using single-axis pixel shift (RRP £4,499.99 inc. VAT). The unit has a 0.16:1 throw ratio for images up to 160in diagonal with little throw distance required. The EH-QS100m also has IP controls for home integration. The 4,500-lumen performance allows for usage in living room environments with high ambient light, and this model is ideal to pair with a fixed frame ambient light rejecting screen for enhanced contrast and visual impact.
ADDING FLEXIBILITY: THE QL PLATFORM
During and after lockdown, we saw an increase in requests from residential custom integrators for brighter projectors in less traditional spaces. We found ourselves specifying our professional business projectors into these spaces. Whilst all performed well, it highlighted the demand for products that would offer the best of both worlds. Something that could offer the flexibility of interchangeable lenses with the brightness capabilities of a pro model but didn’t compromise on contrast, black levels, and overall image quality. The QL platform fulfils that need. The combination of a QL projector and lenses can offer anything from a 0.34:1 throw
ratio all the way up to a 7:1 lens. There is very little that can’t be achieved in today’s more varied use case scenarios. For example, when the QL projectors are paired with our UST lens, the ELPLX02S, they offer some unique features. These include a very large image from an extremely short throw distance and a very limited amount of light dropoff (16% versus the competition’s 30-35% for their UST lens equivalents). Also, the option to hide the projector body in the ceiling void, leaving only the lens visible, delivers a neater solution. On the aesthetics side, the option for white, black, or champagne finishes offers further choices. The QL range is also adept at catering for the growing world of golf, driving and cycling sims, especially the shorter throw lens options.
A TOP TECHNICAL TEAM
Support is key in this sector, and on a day-to-day basis, we have dedicated account management and technical pre-sales support. We also have a number of online tools to help dealers, such as online distance calculators, manuals and product pages on our website. Training can also be made available. The structure and content of this are often tailored to our dealers’ requirements and usually conducted in conjunction with our distributors. We have conducted sessions
Epson has increased flexibility and options available for today’s more diverse market
on Teams or in person. We urge any reseller interested in learning more about the Pro Home Cinema range to reach out and speak with Pulse/Invision. Out in the field, any installation or troubleshooting questions can be directed to distribution pre-sales specialists, dedicated Epson account management, or Epson pre-sales technical specialists. If dealers want to see any of the range in person, Epson projectors are on display at SDS Pro Home Cinema integration showrooms or within our distributors’ demonstration spaces. Ad hoc demos can also be hosted within the new Epson customer demo facility in Lutterworth, Leicestershire, especially for those wanting to explore the new QL range and its various lens options in a brighter setting.
WHY CHOOSE EPSON? We are confident in our current lineup and the support around them. Reasons for this include the rock-solid performance with very low failure rates. Resellers often comment, ‘It just works.’ This type of reliability leads to fewer repeat visits, meaning margins aren’t being eroded. Our performance versus cost is very high. We are often told our kit performs at similar levels to projectors costing much more. Epson’s 4K projectors utilise a dual-axis shift mechanism to achieve 4K with brighter output in a compact chassis while offering great value. Our flexibility is also strong. Integrators often comment that only Epson products work in tricky spaces. This is due to the amount of lens shift our units offer, the flexibility of projector and lens options, and the brightness. Many integrators also like the easy-tounderstand layout of the menus within the products and throughout the range. The last thing an integrator wants is to spend time onsite familiarising themselves with new menus and functionality. Our five-year/12,000-hour warranty on all Epson Pro Home Cinema projectors is included as standard, delivering complete peace of mind.
THE FUTURE We launched new SDS products at the end of last year and are expecting further innovation in the near future. We are currently reviewing our Pro Home Cinema programme to see what additional value we can offer to our Pro Home Cinema partners in conjunction with distributors. The increased brightness and flexibility of Epson projection are certainly opening the broader potential for projection to be adopted in the home. Projection need no longer be confined just to dedicated dark cinema rooms. Get in touch to find out more!

ESSENTIAL REVIEW: RITHUM SWITCH
RITHUM SWITCH: A SMART ADDITION TO THE CI INSTALLER’S TOOLKIT
Our installer-focused reviewer Richard Stevenson gets in touch with the Rithum Switch.
Smart homes and AV integration projects are becoming increasingly holistically connected, with clients expecting seamless functionality across lighting, audio, AV, heating, cooling, shading and security. This has always been possible with a big enough budget, but not without the complexity or expense of full-blown control systems and installer programming skills capable of remotely piloting a space shuttle. Arguably, this creates both a challenge and an opportunity for installers, which the Rithum Switch neatly answers. It’s a powerful and elegantly simple smart touch-panel solution with frankly amazing integration flexibility and a price ticket that positively encourages clients to specify one in every room. It retails at just £249.99. Moreover, Rithum
20 MAY 2025
offers installers several levels of order discount on fully loaded (all plugins and integrations) switches, including 10-unit bulk packs. Rithum is a UK-based company founded in 2020, building its reputation on streamlining user interfaces and simplifying installation. The Rithum Switch is the hero product, with a full-colour touch screen interface designed to replace a traditional light switch or as a standalone device. It’s Wi-Fi connected and its integrations and plugins list is 20-odd systems strong. These include hard-core installer ecosystems like Control4, KNX IP, Rako Core, Lutron RA2 and Bluestream, as well as consumer-friendly devices like Hue, Sonos, Heatmiser and BluOS music.
/Essentialinstall
@Install_mag
Some of these are free to download (Hue, Sonos, Audio Intercom for example) while others come as a premium add-on such as the BluOS Lite plugin at £19.99, Heatmiser at £19.99 and Shelly Local at £9.99. All of the ‘Pro Product’ plugins for C4, Bluesound Multiroom, Zuma, Bluestream, HDAnywhere, Rako (etc, etc) are only available to registered installers to keep the CI industry firmly in the food chain. As noted on EI online last month, a video streaming plugin with support for video intercom and CCTV is on the way imminently. Great packing and comprehensible instructions are top of my list for winning a reviewer over, and here Rithum gets a full five gold stars. The box, with its magnetic lid, superb graphics, and neat card inlays, would get a thumbs-up from the late Steve Jobs, and the instructions are off-the-charts good. This is a UK company and end-to-end instructions are in the native language, detailed and easily understandable. Hallelujah. The product is no less well thought out and well built. It is a neat, square device with a big, full-colour touch screen with multiway screen scrolling. It’s no AMOLED, but punchy enough for a control panel and it is delightfully responsive, answering pokes and swipes without any lag or stuttering. The chassis is Henry Ford-approved black-only, but that works neatly with the black standby screen and dark theme background interface.

ESSENTIAL REVIEW: RITHUM SWITCH
GETTING STARTED
Installation is refreshingly straightforward. The Switch is designed to be as close to plugand-play as possible and fits into a standard 1G backbox or surface pattress. While the unit can be powered from 100–240V AC, it does require a neutral wire at the switch point, which may be a limitation in retrofitting older properties wired with switched-live only. However, Rithum has gone to lengths to provide thoughtful solutions, including excellent documentation on alternate wiring methods, a 2G mains plug socket adapter plate, and the ability to power the unit via low-voltage DC at 12-30V at just 260mA. This DC power flexibility also opens the door to creative placement options, including bathrooms and pool rooms, or freestanding using Rithum’s own table stand accessory. As soon as it is powered up, you navigate to the Wi-Fi connectivity menu, connect and wait for it to update its software. I’ll go and make a cuppa then. Hue and Sonos integration come preinstalled, requiring only a cursory pointing in the correct IP address direction to adopt the Hue lighting and Sonos Amp set up already configured. I picked eight scenes in the Cinema using an array of 26 Hue White and Colour lamps and two Zigbee LED strips. Laid out as 4x2, the text scene names are neat although an icon with a hint of the primary colour backported from the Hue scene icons would be nice. Sonos integration is super pretty, neatly bringing up album art, station icons and image data, volume control and skip/back, source and skip/back play/pause on the same screen. That is a standalone winner for anyone fed up with searching for their phone or smart device to change the volume on their Sonos sound or trying to find mute when the phone or doorbell
rings. The screen sensitivity, navigation and legibility are all superb throughout. Dig a little deeper and you can Group Scenes with colour icons, adding to the usability and aesthetics, with a Macro mode, List Mode and Step Mode, controlling how the scenes are accessed. Individual lamp levels can be controlled at group level or individually, while the device pulls back from the complexity of colour management, leaving that to the Hue app. For HVAC there is a neat Quick Climate Control page which works with the free Rithum Stat plugin straight out of the box. Configuration is by HTTP via SD to integrate with systems such as IFTTT, C4 and Home Assistant without specific integrations or workarounds. This uses a YAML file loaded onto an SD and imported to the Rithum Switch via a MicroSD card slot on the bottom of the panel. Given enough thought and logic, this should open the possibility of integrating with virtually any systems responding to HTTP requests… which is well beyond my pay grade!
WHAT ARE WE SAYING?
We are saying that Rithum Switches are very flexible, all achieved by integrating with other devices and systems rather than trying to rely on a single core architecture. That makes it a simpler solution to smart home integration, considerably more affordable, and opens up the option of extending Rithum Switches to almost every room in the customer’s home—something they probably hadn’t even realised was possible without a re-mortgage. On its own, it’s the perfect choice for media rooms where clients want one-touch control of lighting, music and HVAC scenes without needing a rack full of control gear. In master bedrooms, it neatly offers a central point for
goodnight scenes and could set lights low, drop the blinds and cue up a playlist. In kitchens and living spaces, it can be powered via low-voltage and mounted to cabinetry or feature walls, enabling subtle but powerful control points exactly where users want them. And in retrofit scenarios, where rewiring is limited, its ability to operate independently of the mains circuit and communicate over Wi-Fi offers a compelling workaround to traditional constraints. Compared to other smart touchscreen wall controllers on the market, perhaps Gira’s G1 or even entry-level Control4 keypads, the Rithum Switch holds its own with surprising confidence. It may not offer the depth of customisation that a fully bespoke control system provides, but it makes up for it in speed of deployment, ease of integration and sheer versatility. For installers, that could easily mean more units per customer, more opportunities for add-on work, fewer callbacks and happier clients. The Rithum Switch represents a new class of smart control device that is not trying to replace entire ecosystems, but slot into them gracefully. It brings together a diverse range of smart products and devices into one place that doesn’t involve navigating your phone and multiple apps first. It even does so in a stylish, elegant, easy-to-install and even easier-to-use way. That makes it a powerful addition to the custom installer’s arsenal, whether for a single AV room or complete smart home retrofit, bridging the gap between a full smart home control system and the fragmented world of individual apps and devices. The Rithum Switch is a rare product that ticks all the boxes, does so with style, elegance and panache, and comes to market as quite likely the most affordable fully-featured touch-screen control panel available to date. Simply brilliant.
Simplicity of control is at the heart of the approach

THE STORY
Mark explains, “Our tag line is ‘Partnering Technology’. We find exciting manufacturers who fit our passion, vision and approach and then ‘Match’ them with like-minded installation professionals who fit that ideal. Match adds the service in between sales, marketing, stocking/ logistics and support.” Ian adds, “We believe distribution should feel simple: great products, availability and support. We want the installation professional to understand our offering and know we have their backs. We want our manufacturers to feel we are an extension to their business.”
What brands are the company going to be working with? Mark reveals, “We are launching in five technology categories: Audio/Cable/Control/ Shading/Tablet Solutions and we believe that puts us at the heart of a smart home project. Our brands include Russound for audio, one of the founders of high-performance multi-room audio. Their dedication to the professional installer market is second to none. “In cables we are working with Bridgee, an exciting new brand to the UK, bringing manufacturing heritage and high quality to professional cables. market that has huge potential for growth for residential installers. Finally, for tablet solutions we are bringing Displine, creators of high-quality, modern, elegant tablet solutions with precision German design and premium Polish production, making the ideal home for the always present tablet.”
Where does the company see itself fitting into the market? Ian says, “We believe technology should be a ever-present in the home; cars are now loaded with tech and you would not dream about buying a new one without. We feel the home should be viewed in the same way! By making the professional installer’s life as simple as possible we believe we can drastically increase the uptake of high-quality technology, enhancing the experience for consumers and growing the business of our partners.”

Having products and a vision is important of course, but what about support? Mark underlines, “We are working with our manufacturing partners to bring training programmes designed to give installers the tools to deliver outstanding projects. Most importantly though, our selection of partners is based upon knowing they are there to support when it is most needed. That is why we choose to work with manufacturers who build and support for the professional channel. ESSENTIAL TOP KNOTT
PROTECTING YOUR DESIGNS FROM BEING SHARED WITH COMPETITORS Jason Knott, EI’s resident number cruncher, former CE Pro Editor and data solutions architect evangelist at D-Tools, offers some advice on project plan protection. Let’s be honest — few things in this business are more frustrating than spending hours crafting a detailed proposal, only to have it shopped around to other integrators like it’s on clearance. You’ve done the site visit, listened to the client’s needs, recommended the right products, and built a solution using software tools like D-Tools, AutoCAD or Visio. You’ve essentially handed over a roadmap to success. Then the client forwards it to your competitors to ‘see if they can do it cheaper.’ It’s infuriating—and unfortunately, it’s happening more than you may realise. You usually only find out by accident, long after your proposal has been passed around like a free sample at a trade show. Even worse, some competitors might take your spec and go straight to suppliers. Those suppliers now know you’re specifying other brands, potentially putting your vendor relationships at risk. And if your competitor happens to be in a buying group or has volume discounts, they could undercut your pricing using your own design. Next thing you know, your labour rates, project timelines, margins, and even employee names are floating around in inboxes all over the industry.
24 MAY 2025
So, what’s the solution? Sadly, there’s no silver bullet. But you can take steps to reduce your exposure and protect your time. 1. Use a Confidentiality Disclaimer—Even If It’s Symbolic A simple disclaimer in your proposals or email signature can act as a deterrent. Something like: “The terms and contents of this proposal are confidential and intended solely for the recipient. This document may not be shared with third parties without express written permission.” Legally speaking, it’s mostly symbolic— unless a contract has already been signed, the clause isn’t enforceable. But it sets the tone and puts the client on notice. Think of it as the ‘Private Property’ sign on your intellectual work. It won’t stop the most determined prospect from sharing your design, but it may make them think twice. 2. Introduce a Design or Consultation Fee Here’s where things get real. Charging a design fee doesn’t just protect your time—it sends a message: ‘This isn’t a free quote shop. This is professional consultancy.’
/Essentialinstall
@Install_mag
Many UK integrators charge between £100 and £250 for a residential design. That fee is often deducted from the final project cost if the client proceeds. It’s a fair approach, and one that respectable clients will understand. Yes, some people will walk away when faced with a fee—but that’s the point. You’re weeding out the time-wasters and price-shoppers who were never serious to begin with. The numbers back this up. According to 2024 data from D-Tools, only 53% of proposals created in their Cloud software converted to signed contracts—down from 59% in 2023. That’s a clear sign of rising competition. Charging a design fee is one way to improve your close rate by filtering out the uncommitted. Beyond that, charging for design reinforces your value. You’re not just selling kit—you’re delivering expertise, experience and a tailored solution. That has worth. Don’t give it away.
BONUS TIP: SELL THE FEE AS A SERVICE Don’t just ask for the fee—package it. Present it as a ‘Design Consultation Package’ or ‘System Planning Service.’ Include a brief description of what the client will receive: a personalised system design, budget estimate, product recommendations and timeline. This positions the fee not as a barrier, but as part of the value proposition. It’s no different than an architect charging for a set of drawings. If someone isn’t willing to pay a modest fee for your time and expertise—or worse, if they’re happy to take your designs and shop them around—you have to ask: is that really a client you want? The answer is probably no. So stand your ground. Value your work. And don’t be afraid to ask for a commitment in return. After all, you’re not in business to give away free plans—you’re here to build quality systems with serious clients.

all categories are refining product designs to deliver décor-friendly solutions that turn the modern smart home into a style-conscious, fashion-forward space. One of the most significant drivers of this design-forward trend is the rise of ‘art TVs’ like Samsung’s The Frame—high-resolution displays that function as both televisions and digital artwork. These screens don’t detract from a room’s design—they enhance it, providing an elegant alternative to the idle, black rectangles that once dominated the wall. To truly replicate the look of framed art, a TV must sit as close to the wall as possible. Any gap between the screen and the wall diminishes its visual appeal. Ultra-low-profile mounts deliver that wall-hugging effect—but when motorisation is added, that gap can grow unattractively large. While articulating mounts are ideal for multi-viewing environments, the combination of ultra-low-profile design and motorised functionality has long been elusive. Responding to the growing popularity of art

In contrast, a low-profile mount like the Apex delivers a sleek, elevated look with far less disruption. “Interior designers love it because there’s no risk of damaging wallpaper or specialty wall textures,” says Cory. The Apex also mitigates another common risk: damage to the mount’s moving parts when someone unknowingly tries to adjust it manually. “We incorporated a unique safety feature called Smart Drive, which allows for manual movement without harming the mechanism,” Cory explains. A loud mount motor can be just as intrusive as a clunky installation, so Nexus 21 addressed this concern as well. “By reducing operational noise to 39 decibels, Apex ensures that all attention stays on the display itself,” says

• Extension / Range of Motion Some mounts only offer tilt, while others swivel and extend. Greater range of motion gives users the flexibility to adjust for optimal viewing angles. • Cable Management Nothing ruins a clean look faster than exposed wires. Built-in cable management keeps cords concealed and protected from heat, moisture, or everyday wear. • Control Options / Integration Motorised mounts can often be controlled via remote, smartphone, or integrated smart home systems. Multiple control options improve user convenience and functionality. • Audio / Adding Speakers Integrated TV speakers may not cut it in larger or high-traffic areas. Consider pairing the display with a soundbar, in-ceiling speakers, or a wireless audio system for better sound quality. • Access to Power Motorised TV systems require careful electrical planning. Ensure nearby outlets or pre-wired power are available to keep cords hidden and installations clean. As homeowners increasingly prioritise a blend of form and function, the demand for art TVs and ultra-low-profile mounts continues to grow. By addressing the full spectrum of integration concerns—mounting depth, sound, cable management, and control—AV professionals can deliver solutions that feel more like interior design enhancements than tech installs.

SELECTING THE RIGHT RACK WILL HELP SELL THE INSTALLATION Andy Atwell, MD RGB Communications, argues the humble rack deserves more focus for its practical abilities and its delivery of all encompassing performance. In many people’s eyes, the equipment rack is one of the least glamorous elements of any installation. After all, it just houses the equipment that does all the fun stuff, right? In some cases, I would be inclined to agree but for the majority of installations, particularly residential systems, the rack is a vital component. When deployed correctly, the rack can showcase an installer’s skill and attention to detail, reduce the requirement for servicing, yet make it easier when essential, and, ultimately, justify the overall cost of the installation. So, let’s take a look at why a rack is NOT just a rack, and why choices made during the planning stage of any installation will pay off over the life of the system.
PLAN AHEAD For any system designer, there are a wealth of decisions that need to be made when starting out on a new project. Not only do they need to create a system that delivers the features that
30 MAY 2025
the customer requires, they also need to ensure the system is robust enough to deal with everyday usage, while utilising an operating platform that offers long-term usage yet can be easily serviced should it be required. Simple, eh? Much of the initial product selections will be based on previous experience using suitable electronics. However, just as important is how these delicate and, in many cases, costly, electronics are housed. Essentially, all electronics give off heat and require safe mounting to perform at the optimum level. For years, the industry has been utilising 19in racking systems for such a purpose, especially where all the electronics are located in the same place, such as a plant room through to the cupboard under the stairs, and I am a great believer that these universal and adaptable solutions are still fit for purpose. However, like every element within the custom installation industry, the choices are numerous and the accessory list is plentiful, so it is up to the designer to select the correct package for
/Essentialinstall
@Install_mag
the job. But fundamentally, there are some crucial elements that are essential for any 19in rack installation.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT RACK
The obvious place to start is to choose a racking system that is big enough to not only house all the electronics that are currently in use, but that can also house additional products for future upgrades. You wouldn’t want to be changing out the rack every time the customer upgrades to a larger piece of kit! Crucial to any choice of rack will be where will it be housed? For example, will the rack need to be a free-standing cabinet, such as one of the Lande DYNAmic Series, tucked away in a plant room to control the whole house electronics, or a stand-alone open tower, of which the Penn Elcom R8200 is a great example? For higher-end installations, you might be required to build the rack into the
/essential-install-mag
essentialinstall.com
ESSENTIAL BRACKETS, RACKING AND SUPPORT framework of a wall, so a rack such as the Middle Atlantic AXS Series, that sits flush yet offers sliding rails to pull it out for access to the rear, or even a pull out and rotate model, such as the SRSR system, also from Middle Atlantic, could be the perfect choice. Ultimately, there is such a wide range of racks and options that it really does pay off to research thoroughly to find the right solution. Fundamentally though, the rack needs to be of solid construction, utilising high quality materials to create a rigid and firm base to house the electronics. And don’t forget that not all customers want everything hidden away, and that there will be some that want to see the electronics, particularly for standalone projects such as home cinema rooms. I have seen many excellent examples where racks have been built into walls and have glass panels/doors at the front so that the customer can look at their hard-earned investment, even whilst watching their favourite movie!
POWER MANAGEMENT
The wealth of solutions for rack power management is vast and will depend on what you are powering and how much control you require over the installation. A simple 19in PDU will get most systems up and running, offering a tidy way to mains-wire all electronics. However, the better solution is a managed power block, such as the Gude 12-fold switched and metered
PDU. By attaching the PDU to the network, installers can monitor the power performance of connected devices, as well as performing reboots from a remote connection. Remote power cycles can mean the difference between saving time and money by not having to visit the site. I have found that most customers prefer there to be a level of remote installerinteractivity – it can save a significant amount of time getting a system back on stream, which saves the customer money. What’s not to like?
THERMAL MANAGEMENT
All electronic components produce heat, so when multiple devices are neatly tucked away within a rack environment, particularly a cabinet or built into a false wall enclosure, the collective heat produced can be significant. Effective heat dissipation and exhaust has to be built into the design, as it helps to prolong the lifespan of the electronics, whilst minimising downtime due to failures and can even reduce energy consumption. When planning the rack, it is essential to include thermal management, such as the Penn Elcom Coolrac-B, which expels heat away from the electronics. When combined with a thermostatic controller, such as the FT-DTC (also from Penn Elcom), the optimum operating temperature for the electronics is maintained, which improves stability and ultimately, reliability.
/essential-install-mag
Blustream is renowned for delivering unmatched performance and reliability, offering a comprehensive range of HDBaseT, Video over IP, HDMI, and Audio solutions that set the standard for seamless AV integration across any environment.
CABLE DRESSING
We all like our work to look neat and tidy, but for any installation project, cable dressing the rack correctly is more than just about looks. Correctly routed cabling actually helps improve airflow around the components, whilst also reducing clutter and allowing for easier maintenance were there to be the requirement for it. There are plenty of options available to aid cable dressing, such as the Cable Tray options from Lande through to complete rack cable tidy kits from Middle Atlantic, so it is now much easier than ever to present the rack perfectly. Ultimately, cable dressing the rack is the perfect way to showcase the professionalism of your business, and that your work is of the very highest standard. Why is this important? Were any justification required when it comes to paying the final invoice, your customer will be looking at every detail! So is a rack just a rack? Hopefully, you will see that it is not quite as simple as that, as in addition to the above, don’t forget blanking plates, accessory drawers, wall mounting options, plinths, lighting modules etc. However, when planned correctly and specified with the appropriate accessories, a properly installed rack can not only house the electronics, it will protect them, keep them at the optimum temperature and make them easy to service, all whilst showcasing your professionalism and attention to detail. The perfect way to justify your credentials as a custom installer, wouldn’t you say?

KILLING IT WITH CUSTOMISATION Customised AV furniture supports stylish interiors and plays to the strengths of installers, says James Drummie, Product Manager at distributor AWE. As smart home technology has evolved to become increasingly integrated into daily life, the demand for stylish, versatile and easy to install AV furniture has grown significantly. Clients are seeking solutions from their installers that not only deliver a functional home for their electronics but also complement their home’s interior design and their lifestyle. These demands can be clearly seen in the versatile heart of the modern home, the media room. Here, we are seeing more and more custom solutions emerging that can easily accommodate and support the installation of TV screens, soundbars, speakers and other AV devices. This customisation impacts on shelving, compartments and adjustable mounts, allowing installers to personalise furniture for device concealment, performance and ease of access. Within customised furniture, we’re also seeing the inclusion of built-in wireless charging stations, LED lighting and ventilation systems to prevent overheating. These features alongside hidden channels and removable back panels combine to help both form and function and provide the right solution for the installer and the customer. Changes in screen size and usage are also having an effect in these interior spaces. For example, Sanus offers a range of brackets, including pull-out brackets that can hold the weight of even the largest screens from brands, like Sony and Hisense. Using these brackets
32 MAY 2025
is essential for the installation of large screens in modern media rooms. One popular option is the creation of a media wall aesthetic which involves the installation of large screens on articulated brackets. These media-wall-type solutions make it easy to fit and then adjust large screens, enhancing the functionality and look of the media room. The look of the media room matters now more than ever. A key factor here is the rise of the social media influencer and celebrities, broadcasting content from their home on YouTube, TikTok and Instagram. As we get to see inside their aspirational living spaces, consumers take notice of their interior décor and furniture choices to give them ideas and inspiration for their own properties.
EMBRACE THE FUTURE NOW
The smart home integrator is well placed to embrace this trend and harness the impact of social media to promote the quality and range of custom AV furniture solutions. By liking, commenting on and celebrating these interiors on their own channels, installers are promoting their own skills and the expertise that our industry is renowned for as much as the sleek lines, understated finishes and limited amounts of technology on show in the influencer’s home. The basic functionality of brackets and racking systems has remained a constant,
/Essentialinstall
@Install_mag
although here too there have been recent improvements in aesthetics, performance and ease of installation. One recent example is the availability of Sanus’ latest innovation in TV mounting technology from AWE, the Advanced Full-Motion 4D TV Mounts. These mounts provide unrivalled flexibility, durability, and ease of use thanks to Sanus’ new 4D + Shift technology which allows for postinstallation vertical adjustments. This makes it easier than ever to raise or lower TV screens by up to 200mm to add a soundbar, fit the TV around existing wall outlets, or simply finetune measurements to achieve the perfect end-result. Other notable bracket innovations include the integration of spirit levels within brackets to simplify and speed up installation. AWE is also able to supply fully built and customised Sanus racks of various sizes, complete with glass doors, shelves, and blanking plates. This helps installers to integrate AV equipment seamlessly into home designs without needing to custom-build each component. The ultimate goal where Sanus and AWE together can support the installer is the creation of an environment where the AV equipment not only performs to its best but looks its best too. So, take a closer look and find out more on the Sanus range of AV mounts, furniture, racks, and accessories, the premium brand for high quality, safety-tested, and beautiful solutions.

SANUS QnA Ryan Hagberg, Director of Marketing at Sanus, answers some crucial support questions. How has AV furniture and support systems evolved to meet the needs of modern smart homes and home cinemas? There has been a shift in home entertainment habits with consumers using their main living spaces for most of their viewing, rather than dedicated home cinema rooms. These ‘media rooms’ are often served by Wi-Fi connected devices for both audio and video, such as smart TVs and this has negated the requirement for racks accommodating banks of source and HD distribution components. However, there remains a need to store the smaller connected devices like streamers and Wi-Fi access points etc. So, in addition to the familiar TV mount, Sanus has evolved its offering to include a couple of different solutions for consumers - in-wall media boxes and in-wall TV brackets. Both serve as a place that can hide those devices out of the way, behind the TV, for a clean room aesthetic, but also remain accessible and serviceable as needs and equipment upgrades happen.
What innovations are enhancing the aesthetics and functionality of brackets and racking systems? Our new Sanus full-motion TV bracket lineup, with 4D + Shift technology, is a perfect example of bringing innovation to the market for a better installation and viewing experience. The height adjust feature solves a problem that many don’t consider prior to installation, and that is possible interference from a preexisting wall power outlet, which can be right where the bracket’s wall plate needs to sit for the optimal TV location. Our Shift mounts provide adjustment of the TV up or down by up to 20cm, allowing the bracket to be mounted
34 MAY 2025
around the wall socket while still positioning the TV in the optimum location. It also allows for any installation errors to be corrected - mismeasurement for example - post installation, or for the user to change the height of the TV if they feel it needs to be higher or lower, without the hassle of having to re-install the mount. These new mounts also provide an easy way to adjust for changes in technology or room layout. By raising the screen it is easy to add a soundbar to the set-up at a later date, or adjust permanently or temporarily for items being added to a mantle below the screen – such as seasonal decorations. The aesthetics of a TV mount have become increasingly important. No longer is the industrial-style bracket acceptable to many homeowners. A lot of thought goes into the design of our mounts, to make them feel like an extension of the TV itself and not something which needs to be hidden away when not in use. A well-designed bracket should complement, not detract from, the décor of the room. For installers and homeowners who want the screen to be as unobtrusive as possible, we offer a variety of super-slim, low-profile, brackets that get the TV extremely close to the wall so that it’s
/Essentialinstall
@Install_mag
hanging like a picture. And cable management is also a real issue and something that’s not often thought about when planning a room layout, but loose cables can really jar with people if not managed. We build cable management into our full-motion bracket designs, enabling the cables to be routed through the arms of the brackets so they remain hidden between the TV and the wall. This not only provides a preferred aesthetic, but it also protects the cables from pinching and also saves the installer significant time by not having to devise ways to strap the cables around the bracket.
Why and how should professional installers prioritise these elements in their projects? Professional installers should be thoughtful of the products they choose and look for those that save them time - as time is money - but also meet the long-term needs of their clients. With our in-wall storage solutions and height-adjustment TV brackets, Sanus is providing solutions that adapt to changing equipment and experience needs, enhance the aesthetic of the client’s room and also simplify the installation process.

SMART HOME, HOME DÉCOR Ollie French, Commercial Director at Future Automation, offers some insight into subtle screen inclusion.
Integrating displays into carefully designed spaces has been a challenge undertaken by AV specialists for decades. Displays have always commanded attention in a room, often becoming an unwelcome focal point that disrupts the intended aesthetic. Recognising the importance for integrators, designers and architects striking a balance between functionality and aesthetics has shaped the display mounting industry. This is why you’ll now see manufacturers developing products which cleverly disguise their brackets and mounts inside home décor to fully conceal technology from view when it isn’t in use. ‘Lifestyle displays’ that attempt to mimic the look of wall-mounted artwork have grown in popularity, but lack the ability to fully integrate into environments with design styles that don’t match the aesthetics of the display. Energy efficiency is also an important consideration for these types of displays as they require constant power when the client is present. However, the popularity of these solutions clearly demonstrates client demand for displays that blend seamlessly into modern smart homes, without creating visual distractions when they’re not in use. The concept reflects the evolving lifestyles of clients who want technology available but not dominating their living spaces. This creates an opportunity for AV integrators to create more sophisticated living environments, which balance a client’s desire for technology and a cohesive interior.
36 MAY 2025
AV integrators seeking these solutions for clients need only look to display bracket manufacturers who are engineering mounts that are disguised within a real piece of home décor and offered as a complete solution. Future Automation recognised the demand for fully complete smart home décor, acquiring luxury furniture design house MHB Interiors to develop purpose-built smart home décor products. This represents a shift in the bracket and mounting industry as manufacturers move towards offering all-in-one solutions which AV integrators can specify for their projects, as opposed to having to source all of the individual components separately. This gives AV integrators a simpler avenue to offer designconscious clients solutions that can fully disguise their display and can be tailored to perfectly suit their unique design style. Rolling artwork mechanisms bring sophisticated engineering into the home in a way that remains completely invisible. When the display isn’t in use, a real customisable printed canvas displays the client’s selected artwork, leaving no hint of the screen hiding behind. These styles of display mounts are becoming increasingly popular for homes, hotels, or commercial spaces that embrace traditional design styles as these types of solutions offer clients a way to maintain a cohesive look and feel to their room. Hotel guests might want to stay in a traditionally-themed boutique hotel, but that shouldn’t mean they aren’t given
/Essentialinstall
@Install_mag
the same access to modern technology during their stay. In new build projects, AV integrators can plan and prepare their project to fully recess the mechanism inside a wall to create the ultimate framed-picture effect. This also opens up more creativity with the layouts of modern homes to allow for the installation of a display in non-traditional locations in a space. Instead of being confined to a single area of a room, disguising the display inside a framed picture lets you place the TV in a prominent location in your room without creating a visual distraction. You also gain more freedom to select a display that better suits your client’s needs instead of being restricted to a specific model of ‘lifestyle display’. Looking beyond displays these types of mechanisms can also be used to conceal other objects that the client might not want on display all the time. A safe could be hidden behind a framed canvas in a study, or a bar could be hidden inside a games room. Recessing a Rolling Art mechanism opens up a wealth of opportunities to conceal items or furniture inside an unassuming printed canvas to create a space that’s personalised to suit the needs of the client. For AV integrators, these systems offer significant professional advantages. Cable management becomes streamlined, with wires neatly tucked away behind the wall, delivering the clean finish that clients expect in high-end projects. These systems are also versatile, accommodating various TV sizes and room configurations, making them suitable for projects ranging from city apartments to expansive country homes. For those who value both technology and design, rolling artwork mechanisms represent the perfect marriage of form and function. They allow clients to enjoy film and television without compromising the carefully crafted atmosphere of their home. These sophisticated systems show how far we’ve come in our approach to technology integration. While they still serve the essential purpose of providing entertainment, they do so with an elegance and thoughtfulness that transforms the entire experience of living with technology. In a world where our homes need to be as adaptable as our lifestyles, rolling artwork mechanisms set a new standard for integrated living that celebrates both form and function.

ESSENTIAL HVAC AND SMART HOME INTEGRATION
HVAC CONTROLS – SHOULD YOU BROADEN YOUR OFFERING? Dave Robinson, Managing Director of Sensible Heat Ltd, looks at recent developments in HVAC controls.
Working with a HVAC expert can ensure your customer’s dream home works efficiently
Here’s a familiar scenario; our customer, with their brand new, bespoke house, calls you and says, “my heating controls aren’t working properly”. In fact, when you drill into the problem (rather than the customer’s diagnosis of the problem), you find that the issue is that the rooms are not reaching temperature – or maybe, more commonly these days, the energy bills are way more than the customer was expecting, and of course, the controls are to blame – except the problem is not the controls at all. The root cause of many such problems often extends way back to the early stages of the project and are sometimes inadvertently baked-in to the design of the HVAC systems. The customer wants an indoor pool; wonderful, says the architect, we can design you a lovely pool, and the services engineer can design the plant – but no-one mentions that the customer may have just made a £60k per annum decision (in terms of energy costs to run the pool). Would sir/madam like a pool cover to go with that? (By the way, no pool cover might mean ongoing costs of £20K per annum). All very understandable, no-one wants to be the bearer of bad news, that the new dream home might be pretty costly to run, but surely it’s better to at least broach the subject, rather than risk the reputation of the whole professional team by
38 MAY 2025
making the customer discover this when the first bills roll in? Typically, most of our work comes from referrals – we all want our customers to be happy with what we’ve sold them. So that scenario might be called ‘guilty by omission’ – omitting to tell the customer all the facts. Another thing that we sometimes encounter are out-and-out design mistakes. A couple of examples which we’ve been involved with recently illustrate this – both involving heat pumps. The first example involved a pair of air-sourced heat pumps. The consultant had designed a plumbing scheme that looked very like a boiler system, with a low-loss header feeding the heating and hot water systems; fine, this would have worked, but the heat pumps would have been operating continuously at a high temperature, thus adversely affecting their Coefficient of Performance (COP) – which is a measure of efficiency. We were able to (delicately!) suggest a modified design, which resulted in large savings for the customer in terms of energy bills. A second, much larger property, was designed with a single, very large heat pump, feeding underfloor heating, hot water and an indoor pool. Due to the requirements of the pool, the system needs to be run continuously at 50 degC – again, the COP is badly affected, and this time we were too late to influence
/Essentialinstall
@Install_mag
the design, so the client will be saddled with a larger-than-needed energy bill. Surely, none of these things are our problem? Other professionals are being paid to design these systems, if they don’t work optimally then this is not our problem? I’d argue that it is our problem; we are charging premium prices to provide ‘state of the art’ control systems, but if the overall customer experience is poor (the room doesn’t reach temperature, the energy bill is too high etc) then this will reflect badly on our reputation, whether we like it or not. In the same way as good cinema design involves much more than just selecting a fancy projector and speakers, but will involve interaction with the other disciplines concerning room shape/form, surface finishes, soft furnishings etc, so the provision of HVAC controls needs to consider holistically the rooms, heat emitters, central plant and so on. It’s often not enough to provide integration to a few smart thermostats. How can a custom installer possibly hope to be across all of these disciplines? The answer is to partner with an HVAC controls specialist company. The custom installer often finds themselves in the role of ‘technological gatekeeper’ – they’ll need to at least have an opinion on things technical within a project. But that doesn’t necessarily mean becoming an expert in every technical field; you’ll be using partner companies for some things – maybe gates, or door access, or fire alarms – so why not HVAC controls as well?

When designing and building a 12,500 sq ft property from scratch, the possibilities are virtually endless, especially when the homeowner wants to integrate extensive smart home technology throughout. For this impressive family home in the Buckinghamshire countryside, the main contractor looked to find a partner with experience in smart technology, electrical and security systems. Recognising how these areas increasingly intersect, their goal was to manage the project as efficiently as possible from the start for the benefit of the client. Electricus Audio Visual is an NICEICapproved contractor who some years ago saw that being able to offer smart home automation expertise as an additional service to clients would be an asset in just this type of project. The company invested extensively in training within the smart home sector and has been a Control4 Partner since May 2008. “When the contractor approached us, we knew this was the perfect project to show just what we could do,” recalls Kyri Androu, director at Electricus Audio Visual. “Being able to deliver on the smart home technology, security and electrical aspects of the contract as well as being appointed very early in the build process has really helped. For example, because we were running the first fix electrical cables, we could raise any questions that would impact the smart technology design straight away and get those resolved. It made the whole job much smoother and much more efficient.”
42 MAY 2025
One decision that was easy to make was the inclusion of a Control4 home automation system. “The client’s brothers already had integrated audio-visual and lighting in several rooms at their homes,” adds Kyri. “Our client wanted more so we explained that he could control heating, air conditioning and security all from the Control4 platform too. We demoed Control4 and the app and they really liked how intuitive it was. The whole control process was very simple to understand and he liked how he could edit scenes and not rely on us for everything. Control4 is especially impressive in the way that it interoperates seamlessly with solutions from ADI | Snap One brands but is nicely compatible too in how it integrates technologies from other companies.” System reliability was also a fundamental requirement. While Kyri explained that a simple reboot is usually enough to solve any glitches, the decision was made to fit a WattBox X8 IP power conditioner from ADI | Snap One to deliver advanced power management and control on-site, accessible from the Control4 app. The addition of OvrC remote management also enables Electricus to manage, configure and troubleshoot devices on the network for added client peace of mind. The network topology itself consists of a 310 router and four POE switches from ADI | Snap One brand, Araknis, along with nine

RIV35 access points located throughout the property. Premium whole home audio was also high on the list of priorities, so much so that the expansive five-bed property features 27 zones of audio. “There isn’t a room that doesn’t have music. Even in the garden, there’s music,” Kyri says. “On our prewire we fitted a 10-gig infrastructure, so there’s Cat6A everywhere. There’s also fibre everywhere, just for the future, but we’re using Cat6A now. It’s great for data transmission and video distribution as well.” Five 8-Zone power amps from ADI | Snap One brand, Triad, drive Sonance in-ceiling speakers to ensure every room can be bathed in music. In addition, the home cinema room benefits from a 7.2.4 Dolby Atmos setup complete with Sonance speakers and Arcam processing, guaranteeing an incredible viewing and listening experience.
LIGHTING HIGHLIGHTS For Kyri, the lighting system is also noteworthy. “The lighting is very cool,” he says. “We worked with Lighting by Plum on the lighting design and have integrated 0-10 volt dimming to bring better lighting control through Rako integrated with Control4 – the light levels can be smoothly brought down really low, as low as 1-2%, which at night-time makes a real impact on the mood and experience for the homeowner.”

The security system is also managed by Control4, and here again the Electricus team used its experience to improve the experience for the homeowner. The security setup includes a Control4 chime doorbell on the front door, Lilin security cameras, a Texecom alarm system and perimeter protection. Initially the plan was to put a Control4 T4 touchpanel by the front door. However, Kyri was quick to point out that having touchpanels located elsewhere would be more practical. “We’ve relocated the touchpanel to the kitchen/living space, which is where most people spend most of their time and is where

you need your touchscreen, rather than at the front door. The client also decided to have a touchscreen just outside their master bedroom and then later added a couple of portable touchscreens on the top floor after the family had lived in the property for a while. We’d thought about these possibilities when cabling for the house, so these later installations could be easily achieved.” In addition to the four T4s TouchScreens, the complement of Control4 kit includes faulttolerant CA-10 automation controllers, a Core 5 controller, which automates the audio and video distribution system, interior and

exterior lighting, security system and climate controls across multiple zones, and eight Core 1 controllers, which can orchestrate a wide range of entertainment devices including satellite or cable boxes and game consoles. Eight Control4 SR260 remotes offer intuitive and comprehensive management of the home automation system, combining advanced functionality with sleek design. This setup also enables a high level of personalisation and customisation, as Kyri explains, “When we did the final handover we labelled the rooms and set up prerequisite scenes and explained to the client how they could edit scenes, create favourites and access everything so much more quickly. He really likes how we’ve customised it for him, and how he can customise those elements too. In addition we also give them a link to our videos on how they can personalise their control4 system themselves and create personal automations without the need to contact us.” The final outcome is something both Kyri and the homeowner are proud of. “I think the team that we had involved was really good and the level of collaboration was very productive throughout. It was an excellent installation and showed the full spectrum of what Electricus can deliver.” Information on Electricus Audio Visual is available at www.eav-way.co.uk. ESSENTIAL FOCUS: CINEMA LUXE
THE HEIGHT OF LUXURY The work of Cinema Luxe can be seen at the Artcoustic UK showroom
Darren Barker, Director, Cinema Luxe, gives EI readers the inside story of how this unique company operates in the high-performance home cinema market. Can you give us an overview of Cinema Luxe? Cinema Luxe was founded in 2018 by myself and my great friend and long-time collaborator, Patrick Monahan. Our journey started not in interiors, but in music—we were both professional musicians, performing together in some of the world’s largest stadiums, working with Grammy Award-winning producers and recording in legendary studios and mastering suites. Zoe Kent, who toured with us and is now our invaluable Business Support Manager, has been part of the journey from day one. That deep-rooted passion for music and sound was the spark behind Cinema Luxe. We understood how great audio should feel and we wanted to bring that experience into the home environment—but with the aesthetic standards of luxury interior design. Alongside my music career, I had spent many years working with leading interior design brands and, since 2010, running my own successful practice focused on highend interiors. Cinema Luxe was born from the marriage of these two disciplines: a deep love for audio and a dedication to beautiful, functional design. Since our inception, we’ve grown organically by delivering exceptional work across the UK and Europe. We’ve built a strong, trusted network of CI integrators, interior designers, developers, and leading audio manufacturers. Today, our
44 MAY 2025
team has grown to nine, bringing together top talent across design, manufacturing and installation. Having all these capabilities in-house gives us total control over our projects and ensures the kind of quality our clients expect—and that we demand of ourselves.
What sets Cinema Luxe apart? At Cinema Luxe, we’ve taken a deliberate and unwavering position: we don’t sell AV equipment. We are purely an interior design and build company, and that distinction is at the heart of our identity. It’s a hard line we will never cross—and it’s one that fosters deep trust and confidence with our network of custom integrators. Rather than competing, we collaborate. We work alongside our CI partners to deliver elevated turnkey cinema solutions that go far beyond what an AV integrator alone can typically offer. From initial concept design and sales support, through to technical and construction drawings, contractor coordination, and the in-house manufacture of bespoke joinery, metalwork and upholstery—we take full ownership of the interior delivery. This approach frees up valuable time and resources for our CI partners, allowing them to focus on their core strength: delivering exceptional AV and technology integration. What truly sets us apart is the unique blend of experience we bring as designers, contractors and musicians. We understand the importance
/Essentialinstall
@Install_mag
of protecting the performance potential of the technology being installed. Rather than treating AV as an afterthought, we ensure its ring-fenced and celebrated within the design—resolving the all-too-common tension between aesthetics and performance. Ultimately, we act as the perfect bridge between design ambition and technical excellence, coordinating the many moving parts and people involved to deliver a cohesive, predictable and buildable solution.
What does a typical project look like for you? While every project is unique, our process always begins with one critical step: the brief. We believe that taking a brief is an art form in itself— it’s about listening deeply and interpreting a client’s vision, even when they may not fully know how to express it yet. We spend time absorbing their aspirations, understanding the environment and mentally building the concept long before anything is drawn. That early-stage empathy and clarity lay the groundwork for everything that follows. We also know that every integrator we work with has their own way of doing things. Respecting those working habits and integrating seamlessly into a wider project team—be it architects, main contractors, or interior designers—is a big part of our approach. We position ourselves as a true collaborator, not just a supplier.
/essential-install-mag
essentialinstall.com
ESSENTIAL FOCUS: CINEMA LUXE Conceptually, we work primarily in 3D to help bring our ideas to life. But critically, our designs are always grounded in reality. Buildability is non-negotiable. In a world where CGIs can be both impressive and misleading, we ensure every concept we present is practical, executable and ready for construction. That’s the advantage of being a design and build contractor—we take full responsibility for the outcome, so every detail we propose is construction-ready from the outset. Once a project moves past the sale, we handle all technical coordination. Most of our projects involve multiple stakeholders: CI integrators, HVAC specialists, architects, electrical contractors, main contractors and often an overarching interior designer. We take on the responsibility of ensuring that all those moving parts are aligned, so when it comes time to build, everything fits and nothing is left to chance. That’s where our reputation has really been built—behind the scenes, doing the invisible work that prevents problems before they arise. This rigorous approach also ensures our procurement and manufacturing are accurate and tightly controlled, making the entire process more predictable and less stressful—not just for the client, but for the integrator who’s trusted us with their project and client.
Are there any standout installations you’re especially proud of? We’re fortunate to have a portfolio we’re genuinely proud of, but two projects stand out as particularly meaningful milestones. The first is Buzzards Road, a project we delivered in partnership with our friends at IndigoZest. This cinema won the award for Best Global Home Cinema at the prestigious Design Et Al International Design & Architecture
Awards. What made this award especially significant was that it’s voted on by over 20,000 of the world’s top architects and interior designers. Recognition from our peers at that level felt like a real breakout moment—not just for us, but for the wider custom installation industry. These awards are typically won by mainstream architectural practices, so to see a project born from the CI world take the spotlight was a powerful sign of how far our industry has come in recent years. The second was a deeply personal project for us: the interior design and fit-out of L-Acoustics’ HYRISS facility in Highgate, London. As musicians, L-Acoustics systems were non-negotiable for us on stage—they’ve always represented the pinnacle of professional audio. So when they approached us in 2023 to take control of the interiors for their new space, it felt like things had come full circle. Beyond the personal connection, the project itself carried a completely unique brief and set of technical requirements. To have understood that brief so clearly and to deliver an uncompromising, unsnaggable finish—it’s something we’re incredibly proud of.
How do you ensure that technology blends seamlessly with design and architecture? It starts with respecting the technical requirements of the room. Seamless integration of technology and design can’t happen without a deep understanding of both disciplines—and the reality is, there’s almost always some level of compromise. The key is knowing where to make those compromises without diminishing the performance or the aesthetic. Our role is to bridge the gap between the architectural design and the technical demands of high-performance AV. That’s only
possible through close collaboration with our CI partners and supporting manufacturers, and by drawing on our own in-house expertise in both construction and acoustics. Because we speak both languages—design and AV—we can make smart, informed recommendations that align with the client’s vision while preserving the integrity of the technology. Ongoing learning is also critical. We operate in an industry that’s incredibly dynamic, and we’re fortunate to benefit from exceptional training—both from manufacturers and organisations like CEDIA. There’s a real thirst for knowledge within the CI community and that commitment to continuous improvement is one of the most encouraging things about the future of our industry.
Are there any AV brands and technologies that you most often work with? At Cinema Luxe, we are proudly brand agnostic. Since we don’t supply AV equipment ourselves, we don’t make direct product recommendations. Instead, we respect and support the preferences and established supply chains of our CI partners—it’s their area of expertise and we’re here to complement it, not compete with it. That said, we maintain strong relationships with a wide range of manufacturers and distributors. This is crucial, as it allows us to engage with them behind the scenes—often on behalf of our integrator partners—to ensure smooth coordination, particularly when it comes to the technical nuances and installation requirements of specific products. Our role is to help deliver the best possible outcome by aligning the design and technical requirements seamlessly.

ESSENTIAL FOCUS: CINEMA LUXE
How do you keep up with new trends and emerging technologies? Staying ahead of trends in both design and technology requires a combination of proactive research and ongoing collaboration. We constantly monitor the market, reviewing next year’s collections and engaging with fellow design professionals to gauge where the interiors market is heading. In parallel, we stay closely connected with AV manufacturers and suppliers. By keeping up to date with the latest product developments and emerging technologies, we can ensure that we continue to offer a high level of integrated service to our clients—delivering not just current excellence, but future-forward solutions that align with evolving trends.
What opportunities are there currently in the market? Clients are more informed and design-focused than ever before, with interior aesthetics playing a major role in their decisions. When you combine this with the growing demand in the cinema sector, there’s significant potential in the market right now. However, people still buy from people. Whether it’s us, with our personal approach and professional insight, or the integrators, with their technical expertise, the real power lies in combining these strengths. Together, we offer an incredibly compelling proposition for clients. Another key opportunity lies in the evolving role of the CI industry, especially in terms of specifying the interior fit-out for cinema rooms. Historically, the interior design aspect of these spaces has been under-valued. If you look at other areas of high-end homes—like kitchens or bespoke joinery—the cost per square foot often exceeds what’s typically specified for a cinema room. These spaces, however, are highly specialised and require unique finishes, acoustic treatment, and significant coordination. At Cinema Luxe, we’re helping integrators overcome this by giving them the confidence to specify higher-end finishes and materials that align with the client’s overall home design. By doing so, they can secure projects with the right clients who are willing to invest in creating a cinema space that’s not just technically advanced, but also beautifully integrated with their home.
The L-Acoustics HYRISS facility underlines how far the company has come
We’ve made this a core priority by dedicating a staff member specifically for office-based support, alongside an employed maintenance operative who is available to address any issues that arise swiftly and professionally. Every project we complete comes with a comprehensive twoyear component and labour warranty, and we’re exploring options to expand on this with service contracts and warranty extensions. This is a growing trend in other areas of the home, and we see real value in offering this level of peace of mind to our clients, particularly in the context of larger builds and construction projects. While there may be less immediate need for on-going service plans within our department of the CI sector compared to the technology, the assurance it provides to clients is invaluable, ensuring they feel supported and confident in the longevity of their investment.
What’s next for Cinema Luxe? We’re continuing to strategically expand by adding the right talent to our team, ensuring we can meet the growing demand and successfully deliver the projects we’ve secured. In addition
to this, we’re working on some exciting new product launches, several of which will be showcased at this year’s EI Live!. Our modular media wall, The Stage and its companion modular acoustic panel, The VIP, are nearing full release and production. We’re also developing a truly unique integrated wall system for our custom builds that combines absorption, diffusion and bass trapping in a sleek, discreet form. This innovation will offer a cutting-edge solution for clients looking for both high performance and refined design. At Cinema Luxe, we’re always pushing the boundaries of design and construction, and we’re thrilled to share these new developments in the coming months. Ultimately, though, our focus remains on delivering exceptional quality projects—those that are executed with care, attention to detail and love for what we do. We’re also committed to continuing to support our network of partners and driving innovation within the industry. Cinema Luxe cinemaluxe.co.uk

How important is aftercare and ongoing service in your client relationships? Aftercare and ongoing service are paramount— it’s where companies build their long-term reputation. In our case, as partners to CI integrators, it’s not just about delivering a oneoff project. It’s about ensuring that the end client receives best-in-class service and support while also maintaining our integrators’ confidence in recommending us as a trusted partner for future projects.

ESSENTIAL ANTIFERENCE PROFILE
CLEAR SIGNAL, BRIGHT FUTURE: ANTIFERENCE CELEBRATES DECADES OF PROGRESS Agile and able, Antiference stands ready to continue delivering the quality and service that has seen the company mark up an impressive almost 90 years in business. Antiference has a rich history in manufacturing and it is easy to see how the company and brand have achieved a remarkable 88 years in business. Over the many years of trading and manufacturing – from the early days of TV and radio aerial production right up to today, with the fabrication and development of hardware and electronics for Starlink systems, Wi-Fi and AV equipment – Antiference has consistently evolved. From small beginnings in 1937 in a small fabrication shop in Wardour Street, London, ‘Anti-interference’ was formed to manufacture TV and radio aerials as TV transmissions from Alexandra Palace in North London began. In 1938, the name Antiference was created and registered as a limited company. During the war, Antiference manufactured aerials for the MOD and post-war, the company increased production to meet the new and increased demands of the consumer market.

ESSENTIAL ANTIFERENCE PROFILE The company continued to innovate and in 1949, Antiference designed and developed the ‘Antex’ – the first X-shaped aerial available – and in 1953 the maker delivered another first when Antiference was the first company to supply pre-assembled aerials to save the installer time and money during projects. All this early success meant the company soon needed more expansive premises, so the factory moved to Aylesbury taking on a much larger space. Another significant part of the company’s history and a landmark in broadcasting itself was the Antiference Antex antenna. This example of signal innovation is now part of the historical RF display at the Science Museum in London and can be seen on display there at certain times of the year. The Antex was known for its durable build, often made with aluminium elements and a robust boom, suitable for outdoor installation. The success and expansion continued meaning the Antiference aluminium tube rolling mill was moved to its own factory in 1955 and became the world’s first producer of electronically welded aluminium tube. Not only did TV aerial production continue with increased demand, but the mill also began to produce tubular garden furniture and curtain rails as well. Throughout the 60s and 70s, Antiference produced a wide range of TV reception and distribution products alongside various other products including leisure items for camping and curtain rails sold widely across the UK and Ireland. Manufacturing continued in the UK until 1998 when, in order to stay competitive, sadly the factory was closed and production was outsourced to the Far East.
The Antiference brand has a rich history
ANTIFERENCE TODAY Fast forward to recent times, and the Antiference brand was purchased by Australian family-run business, Bitek, in 2011. This change of ownership enabled the production of Antiference products to move into the factory owned by the Bitek Group meaning more product development opportunities and improved quality control. The Bitek factory has enabled development of products such as the CCTV cabinet – a recent addition to the Antiference range. This product is manufactured using advanced laser cutting technology for improved accuracy and output efficiency. Antiference now offers a wide range of products for the TV reception, distribution and AV markets and continues to pioneer new technologies and products. Today’s offerings span a wide range of categories, including TV wall mounts, HDMI distribution, Wi-Fi and networking products, plus the largest range

of TV reception and distribution products in the market. The most recent and exciting development highlighted by the Antiference team is the Clear Flow Cloud system designed for remote (cloud) access to Clear Flow Wi-Fi networks. This line enables installers to offer a remote support service to the client. The Clear Flow Cloud can also allow connectivity remotely to other network devices which feature an on-board GUI allowing connection of many other devices such as CCTV, NVR, video matrix, managed Ethernet switch, TV headend and so on. Registration to use this service is easy and can be carried out on the Antiference website. The service is free for professional users and is already

growing in popularity due to the versatile, secure, reliable service. Dan Winterton, Sales & Marketing Director at Antiference, sums up, “Looking ahead to the future developments, Antiference stands in a strong position to lead the market as the developments steer our industry and marketplace. The development team at Antiference is consistently looking for ways to improve the product offering to the integrator and installer to offer better products for a more professional installation. TVDB2B: AV TRADE WITH PRIME BENEFITS Instant access to AV and electrical products with TVD Group introduces TVDB2B.com, a trade-only platform for installers. TVD Group, a well-established supplier to AV, commercial integration and the electrical retail trade, has launched a new trade-only e-commerce website, TVDB2B.com. Cited as marking a significant shift in how installers and integrators can source and purchase products, this trade-only site operates as an e-commerce platform. Simply click for an instant quote (during working hours) and for registered users, simply click to buy with free delivery and no minimum order quantity. “Installers told us they needed a simpler, faster way to get hold of the products they use both every day and one-off items for specific jobs that might not be available through traditional CI (custom Install) distributors,” says Rob Greenlees Divisional Sales Director at TVD B2B. “TVDB2B.com was built in direct response to that feedback.” This pay-as-you-go approach requires a simple online application to ensure the tradeonly pricing is visible to the trade buyers, but registration is usually approved in quick fashion by return email, says Rob. The new site removes the need for detailed upfront account applications or lengthy credit approvals, allowing AV professionals to log in and order immediately. There’s no minimum order value and free nationwide delivery on all purchases, a move which the company says is further breaking away from the traditional distribution model. For many in the AV, CI and commercial electrical installation world, where
50 MAY 2025
projects vary widely in scope and timing, the shift is designed to offer timely solutions as the project progresses. TVDB2B.com’s appeal lies not just in the ordering process, but also in the breadth of the product range. The distributor says that while many CI trade distributors focus on a narrow category of specialist AV gear, TVD Group’s nearly three decades of supplying to the retail, hospitality and commercial AV trade opens up a wide product portfolio for integrators. The diverse selection of goods ranges from commercial display screens and LED digital signage to TVs and accessories, AV installation speakers and even domestic appliances such as kitchen, laundry and refrigeration products. Hotel TVs and even small domestic appliances are available, with a constantly growing portfolio of both products and categories. “For busy installers working across mixed-use developments, residential fit-outs, or hospitality projects, being able to source everything from a commercial display to a microwave from the same portal could streamline procurement and reduce supplier dependency,” adds Rob. “With no minimum order and free delivery, we are developing TVDB2B.com to be the Installation specialists’ with discounted trade-only pricing!” For AV professionals used to applying for trade accounts and waiting for credit approvals before placing their first order, the instant-

access model will feel refreshingly efficient, says the company. The site allows tradespeople to place one-off orders at any time, with no barriers to entry and pricing clearly visible to registered trade users. Ongoing quantity discounts, flash deals and promotional offers add further appeal as TVD deploys e-commerce style marketing and offers to keep installers visiting the site for the next bargain buy. Yet, Rob is keen to point out that this is not simply a pile-it-high-and sell-it-cheap trade website, as the platform builds on TVD B2B’s long-standing reputation in the AV and electrical supply market. With nearly 30 years of experience, the company has become a goto trade supplier for retailers and integrators working across a broad range of industries, including hospitality, healthcare, sports venues, and retail. TVD B2B has also just celebrated its second year of being an employee-owned business, after being a family-owned and run business since 1996. The transition has reinforced its commitment to service quality, innovation and long-term growth, putting the direction and drive of the company into the hands of those working at its coalface every day. According to the company’s leadership, the move to employee ownership has helped create a culture of accountability and collaboration that’s evident in the development of initiatives like TVDB2B.com.

AV installers logging on to the new platform will find an interface that’s been designed for speed and simplicity, with a little bit of fun and good humour thrown in along the way, thanks to the website’s cartoon mascot, Bizzy the TVDB2Bee. “Whether you’re sourcing a single HDMI lead or kitting out an entire sporting venue with cutting edge AV and signage, TVDB2B offers quick product selection and transparent pricing, with detailed stock availability and specifications for easy comparison,” adds Rob.
“For repeat customers, features like saved order history and streamlined checkout make the experience even more efficient. Of course, for regular customers, full trade credit accounts are also available.” While the new platform is designed for on-the-go, immediate purchasing, TVD is keen to ensure its commitment to customer service that has underpinned the brand continues to shine through. The site has instant access to trade support and installers with larger or more complex projects can still benefit from
the Group’s experienced team for tailored product recommendations, quotes and logistics coordination. The new site does not attempt to replicate the ‘dealership-only’ model seen in other CI-focused distribution platforms. Instead, TVD Group says it acknowledges that today’s AV professionals need tools that match their flexibility. Whether that is working solo or as part of a wider contracting network, placing a bulk order or just picking up a last-minute item to keep a job on track, TVDB2B promises to support the trade irrespective of the project size. TVDB2B.com is essentially positioning itself as a one-stop shop for installers, backed by the logistics and purchasing scale of a national distributor but with the accessibility and responsiveness of a digital-first ‘click-tobuy’ operation. As the AV landscape continues to evolve, speed and simplicity in sourcing are becoming just as important as the products themselves. TVDB2B.com might not be the only player in this space, but the company argues by stripping away the typical barriers to trade purchasing, it may become one of the most useful for installers. ESSENTIAL CEDIA
HOW TO TELL IF YOUR CLIENTS ARE RIGHT FOR YOU! In the smart home industry, we often focus on helping homeowners find the perfect integrator to bring their vision to life. But what about the other side of the equation? How do integrators identify and connect with the right clients – those who align with their expertise, value their craft and foster rewarding partnerships? Dennis Lundell from CEDIA member company, Aloud AB, explains how his company goes about finding new clients and then making sure that they match well together. Most of our customers find us through recommendations and referrals from previous clients and collaborators, such as architects, interior designers, electricians and builders. We’ve noticed that our presence on social media, especially on Instagram, helps strengthen our brand and reach new clients. We also participate in and host events, which is an effective way to create new connections within and beyond our industry. The first communication with a customer is extremely important. Here, we lay the foundation for a long-term partnership and get an initial sense of what the customer needs and expects. By asking the right questions and carefully listening to their goals, we can establish trust and offer a first glimpse into how we work.
For the first meeting, we always prefer a personal meeting, if possible, as it builds stronger relationships and facilitates a better understanding of the project’s details. If an inperson meeting isn’t possible, we use video calls, which still allow us to see body language and capture nuances in the conversation that can be difficult to pick up over the phone or via email. This stage is about building a relationship and creating a comfortable environment where the customer feels at ease to share their ideas and questions. We focus on being attentive, asking the right questions and demonstrating that we understand the customer’s vision. It’s also during the first meeting that we have the opportunity to make a strong initial impression.
This could be through a well-prepared company presentation or a well-executed demo in the Aloud showroom. We explore the customer’s needs and vision, the scope of the project, whether any architect or interior designer is involved and the timeline. It’s also important for us to understand their interest in design and technology. This ensures that we can add value, meet, and exceed the customer’s expectations. If their project and goals align with our expertise and values, the partnership feels natural. You have to be aware of potential warning signs that could show the customer isn’t right for you. If they have unrealistic expectations regarding the timeline and budget, it may indicate that we’re not a good match. Another warning sign is when the customer cannot specify their needs or expectations, as this can lead to difficulties later on. On the flip side, when the customer is engaged, has a clear vision, and is open to transparent dialogue, then we know that we will be the right fit. We also appreciate it when the customer expresses an interest in quality and long-term solutions, as this reflects our own values. We can get a sense of their commitment and attitude toward quality through body language, tone of voice and how the customer talks about their project. If the customer shows interest in detail, is curious about the technology, and asks questions about our solutions, it often indicates a good match for our services and way of working. CEDIA cedia.org

BLENDING ART AND TECHNOLOGY WITH THE HAND-PAINTED CINEMA DbM, premium AV distributor, supplied key AV technology for The Hand-Painted Cinema, an award-winning media room designed and installed by integrator, Inspired Dwellings. essential to achieving the room’s immersive sound and picture quality. The Barco Bragi projector was positioned behind a hand-painted motorised panel, allowing projection from the highest possible point to ameliorate the limitation of the room’s low ceiling. A specialist glass porthole isolated the projector from the cinema space, reducing noise without compromising image quality. Powered by an innovative, high lumens density (HLD) RGB LED light engine, the Barco Bragi provides professional grade optics and bright colours to enhance the overall cinematic experience. The Bragi uses CinemaScope, a complex ratio detection system scaling images to size, ranging from 1:78:1 to 2:39:1. This project was crowned Best Media Room Level I at the 2024 CEDIA EMEA Smart Home Awards, showcasing the pinnacle of home entertainment innovation. Set within a Georgian townhouse in London’s prestigious Belgravia, the media room seamlessly blends heritage architecture with state-of-the-art technology. The client sought a media room that incorporated a luxury cinema set-up and a visually striking interior, wanting to preserve

the townhouse’s historic charm with an opulent design. Every surface was hand-painted, requiring AV components to blend seamlessly into the décor. To achieve this, the design incorporated motorised chinoiserie screens and a concealed projector screen, ensuring the technology remained unobtrusive while delivering a premium viewing experience. TAMING THE TECH It was quite a challenge in terms of the wideranging nature of the project. Amit says, “We tackled the aspect of having a single intuitive interface by using Elan (Nice) as the overarching control system. It may seem weird to introduce yet another control system but, given the nature of the various systems in place, this provided the best way in which we could use a centralised control system that would integrate all the various elements. The Elan system allowed us to pull in all the existing HDL lighting as well as the Rako gym lighting to present the client with a single light control interface. This was then echoed with every other part of the system such as TV/audio control, blinds/windows as well as the climate/heating control aspects to make a cohesive system.” Taming the tech in this way meant that the team could implement the automated or independently on dedicated monitors. Also included were increased automated control of the hot water system and towel radiators, control of Velux blinds and windows and the inclusion of a remote control to operate the various media zones with one device. The team also upgraded the client’s working-from-home space, incorporating two 49in widescreen monitors mounted on hydraulic lifting arms and an electric rising platform table. Another major initiative was for the team to work with the clients’ appointed landscaping team, which included ESSE Landscapes to undertake a wholesale redevelopment of the exterior of the home. This involved a new pool, a hot tub, an ice bath and an outdoor kitchen and lounge housed in a glass-fronted pergola. The garden also includes two further zoned

The home needed a tech reset to bring everything under control
GARDEN OF DELIGHTS One of the most impactful parts of the project was the garden space. Amit reveals, “We really went to town from an entertainment point of view, as the garden has a three-zoned space arrangement with an entertainment space near the house, followed by a formal lawn which then leads to a woodland area. The main focus was in this first zone. Here the client wanted to create a multi-faceted space that could be used by the family to host parties as well as for day-to-day family life, bringing the indoor amenities outdoors to enjoy in all weathers.” The main pergola building would be the hub around the pool for the family to congregate in. ESSENTIAL CASE STUDY: BITCLOUD AUTOMATION Amit continues, “Another nice feature was that we customised the automation interface with theming specific to the house. There was a strong design theme of industrial steels and we used this as the basis for a bespoke interface. We also included images of the various zones so you would have a visual representation of the room and not only just a textual name.” Picking out a favourite part of this wideranging project is tough, but Amit says, “Our favourite part of the project has to be the new outdoor entertainment area. The lounge, outdoor kitchen and pool setting, all controlled via a simple remote, provide a great place to entertain guests or simply be out with the family. For the client it’s simple — they love having control of their home back.” However, in a little more detail, comments from the client include, “Crystal-clear audio and vibrant visuals elevate the outdoor poolside
space to make it a truly unique, awe-inspiring place to be. “With home automation, I’m able to remotely control all aspects of my home whilst I’m away, giving me control at my fingertips and together with tailored automated routine tasks, it saves me time, money and effort in an already hectic life.” Finally, “One-touch mood lighting scenes enable me to create a tailored entertainment experience, all at my command, for both the inside and outside spaces in my home.” Amit was also keen to underline the help, support and collaboration from the other companies involved: Nicholas Electrical, Innovo (driver development) as well as distributors Alltrade and Indigo Distribution.

A REVOLUTION IN SOUND
The new subs are said to have ‘the most sophisticated DSP ever deployed in a home subwoofer’
Combining the first-ever 15in driver and dual monoblock amplifier with the most powerful DSP ever deployed in a subwoofer, says SVS, the 5000 R|Evolution Series brings reference performance to many more audio fans. The two new models extend the platform previously developed for the brand’s flagship 17-Ultra R|Evolution subwoofers, delivering reference performance from smaller enclosures and at competitive price points. The SB-5000 R|Evolution sealed cabinet subwoofer and PB-5000 R|Evolution ported cabinet subwoofer feature multiple
advancements including a proprietary 15in driver, dual monoblock amplifier and a 295MHz Analog Devices DSP, which the maker says is the most powerful processing engine ever used in a subwoofer For the new 15in driver, SVS has designed a dual, flat, edge-wound three-inch voice coil to ensure stable transfer of electromagnetic current from the dual-mono amplifier to the 21kg (approx.) toroidal ferrite magnet motor, producing high output with exacting control. Copper-clad aluminium voice coil wire combines the best properties of both elements,
yielding ideal thermal capacity and magnetic field strength within the motor. 5000 R|Evolution subwoofer drivers are built to handle the most punishing playback while rendering even the subtlest sonic details with refinement at peak and moderate listening levels. Maximising the driver’s potential is a firstever 2,000W RMS, 5,000+W peak dual mono-block STA-2000D Class-D amplifier. Each amplifier powers one of the dual voice coils to increase the current into the motor while asserting pinpoint control and increasing output potential. Eight 60-amp 200-volt MOSFETs deliver enough power to ensure peak performance with the most demanding content, with the benefit of Class D efficiency. Given the amplifier’s output potential, SVS designers have developed an equally capable power supply involving an onboard AC line conditioner with power factor correction, which stabilises the incoming voltage, corrects waveform distortions and eliminates electromagnetic and radio interference. Calibration of the 5000 R|Evolution series is managed via a comprehensive subwoofer control smartphone app. SVS svsound.com

STRATTON ACOUSTICS IN ITS ELEMENT Stratton Acoustics Ltd, the British-based, high-end artisan loudspeaker manufacturer, has announced the addition of two models to its Element range: the Element 6 and Element 8. Built to the same exacting standards as the Element 12 and Elypsis 1512, the Element 6 and Element 8 loudspeakers have been created to offer a visually arresting presence, include premium materials, strong electro-acoustic design and engineering, all combined to deliver a luxurious experience for both the eyes and ears. The Element 6 offers sleek lines and luxurious finishes, and despite its modest dimensions, the Element 6 is designed to be every bit a high-fidelity performer. At its core is a 6in (150mm) carbon-fibre bass/midrange driver paired with Stratton Acoustics’ patented decoupled, waveguideloaded 29mm soft dome tweeter - a configuration engineered for precise imaging, wide dispersion and musical coherence. The enclosure is an acrylic-silica reinforced polymer matrix, chosen for its inertness and resonancesuppressing qualities. Combined with CNCmachined, aerospace-grade aluminium front and rear baffles, the combination promotes a clean, transparent sound with a durable, luxurious finish that will last for decades.
The Element 8 retains the same design DNA as the Element 6 but scales up both the visual presence and acoustic performance. With its 8in (200mm) carbon-fibre bass/ midrange driver, the Element 8 brings a deeper, more authoritative bass foundation, while maintaining the same focus on clarity, balance and musical expression. Like its smaller sibling, it features the same patented decoupled, waveguide-loaded 29mm soft dome tweeter, housed in an acrylic-silica reinforced polymer matrix enclosure. As with the Element 6, the Element 8 employs a reflex-
loaded cabinet architecture with a precisionengineered flared port with innovative dual resistive port vents used to suppress the pipe resonance, eliminating port coloration and ensuring musical, fast, clean bass response. The result is a speaker that delivers a flat frequency response, class-leading dynamics, extended bass, and maximal emotional engagement, says the maker. Stratton Acoustics strattonacoustics.com

The speaker continues ATC’s philosophy of combining the best in-house drive units with matched on-board amplification for optimal fidelity. The speaker unites the benefits of compact size and wider bandwidth with the improved phase coherence, response speed and dynamics delivered by ATC active operation. Integrating a two-way active system within a 20-litre stand-mount cabinet, the model features ATC’s proprietary 150mm/6in ‘Super Linear’ Mid/Bass driver and 25mm/1in ‘S-Spec’ dual-suspension tweeter, powered by on-board class A/B MOSFET power amplifiers capable of delivering 200W and 50W continuous power to the bass and HF drivers, respectively. The performance and power output of each power amplifier is carefully tailored to driver demands and the musical elements they reproduce. The Mid/Bass driver employs a large 75mm/3in voice coil and short-coil (long-gap) motor assembly featuring ATC’s proprietary ‘SL’ motor technology, which reduces distortion from the upper bass into the midrange. DAN CLARK HEADPHONES BACK IN BLACK Noire X, the latest headphones from Dan Clark Audio (DCA), are now available in the UK via distributor Electromod. Based in San Diego, USA, DCA is an artisan headphone maker. The company holds six patents, its headphones earning acclaim for their sound, build and ergonomic qualities. The Noire X headphones utilise proprietary planar driver and metamaterial tuning technologies developed for DCA’s top-tier headphones like the closed-back Stealth and open-back Expanse. The Noire X uses planar drivers, incorporating a thin membrane immersed in
a magnetic field to cause it to vibrate. Among the advantages of planar magnetic drivers are increased accuracy, reduced distortion and superior sound-staging. For the Noire X, DCA has developed an enhanced version of its Aeon planar driver. The new driver’s 62x34mm diaphragm is significantly more rigid than its predecessor, with “superior unit-to-unit consistency”, reduced distortion, improved reliability and a smoother frequency response. New manufacturing processes combined with optimised V-Planar knurling deliver a smooth frequency response with low distortion

throughout the listening range, achieving levels of detail that were previously the reserve of DCA’s top-tier headphones. A critical addition to the Noire X is DCA’s proprietary AMTS tuning system, previously found only in the company’s top-of-the-line Stealth, Expanse, E3 and Corina headphones. AMTS uses advanced metamaterial design concepts to shape frequency response and eliminate high-frequency standing waves which cause the synthetic-sounding high frequencies heard with many headphones. By eliminating these standing waves, Noire X delivers a balanced, nuanced and airy treble performance, free of the fatiguing artifacts that diminish the listening experience. The Noire X’s self-tensioning headband is optimised to reduce listening fatigue by distributing pressure evenly across the listener’s head for a balanced, ‘barely there’ fit. This helps to prevent hot spots and pressure points, making the Noire X well suited for hours of immersive, strain-free listening. The Noire X is available to selected retailers, at an RRP of £1,000 inc. VAT.
