THE VARIETY CLUB

As we unveil the muchanticipated Home Cinema Supplement in the September issue of EI, it’s clear that the home entertainment landscape is evolving more dynamically than ever. Yes, dedicated cinemas still hold appeal for enthusiasts pursuing a fully immersive, carefully calibrated experience— but the market is rapidly expanding into more flexible, integrated solutions that cater to modern lifestyle needs.

Increasingly, homeowners are opting for media rooms that fluidly merge with their day-today living spaces—settings that transform from family lounge to cinematic escape at the touch of a remote. In these hybrid environments, AV equipment is seamlessly veiled behind elegant joinery, motorised screens descend when

needed and premium speakers dissolve into bespoke cabinetry—revealing their performance prowess in cinematic moments, then vanishing gracefully once the credits roll.

Simultaneously, short-throw projection systems are gaining traction—not just for their ability to produce large, dynamic images with minimal distance, but also for how effortlessly they complement integrated AV solutions and custom cabinetry designs. These systems offer homeowners breathtaking visuals without sacrificing floor space or design cohesion. They’re ideal for those seeking high performance without the bulk, especially in living-adjacent rooms.

Meanwhile, the rise of super-sized TVs cannot be ignored. With models delivering eye-opening brightness and contrast, they offer a compelling option for living spaces awash with ambient light.

The options for homeowners have never been broader or more sophisticated.

From traditional, purpose-built cinemas to living room-friendly media lounges to hidden, high-performance cinema systems—the spectrum of choice continues to widen. Yet, despite this diversity and the growing awareness of integrated cinema possibilities, penetration remains modest among homeowners investing in high-performance homes. The majority still haven’t taken the plunge into truly immersive audio-visual experiences. That gap represents both a challenge and an opportunity: a chance for integrators and manufacturers to inspire and unlock new demand across more homes.

So, whether you’re reading this from a dimmed cradle of a dedicated cinema or a sleek, multi-purpose living space, the imperative is clear: the future of home cinema is not just about screens and speakers—it’s about seamless, lifestyle-enhancing experiences. Now, more than ever, it’s time to get busy.

As the most accessible option in the series, the DLA-NZ500 makes no compromises on picture quality. Like the NZ700, it holds the distinction of being among the smallest native 4K laser projectors in the world, making it perfect for installations where space is at a premium.

The NZ500 delivers 2,000 lumens of brightness from a durable BLU-Escent laser engine, paired with native 4K resolution for exceptional image clarity and colour accuracy. It also supports HDR10+, HLG and benefits from JVC’s Frame Adapt HDR technology.

Quiet, efficient and incredibly sharp, the NZ500 is ideal for smaller spaces where premium performance is desired in a discreet, compact chassis.

INDUSTRY-LEADING HDR WITH FRAME ADAPT & THEATRE OPTIMISER

JVC’s acclaimed Frame Adapt HDR and Theatre Optimiser technologies offer significant advantages. Rather than relying on fixed tonemapping curves, these systems dynamically analyse HDR content scene-by-scene or frame-by-frame and optimise image output based on screen size and environment. The result: consistently breathtaking HDR, even from challenging sources like UHD Blu-ray or streamed content.

DESIGNED FOR INSTALLERS, BUILT FOR CINEMATIC PERFECTION

DESIGNING THE ULTIMATE COZY ENTERTAINMENT SPACE

The idea of a home cinema has transformed dramatically in recent years. No longer reserved just for movie buffs, these spaces have become multifunctional sanctuaries where people can unwind, socialise, and enjoy immersive entertainment in comfort and style.

More homeowners are now creating intimate media rooms that double as both high-tech theaters and inviting lounges for gatherings. At the forefront of this transformation is Cineak, a brand that has redefined what home cinema seating can be. Known for innovation and

craftsmanship, Cineak consistently sets new standards in how seating enhances both the look and the experience of private theaters and media rooms.

COMFORT TAILORED TO YOU

Unlike conventional fixed seating, Cineak’s design sofas are created with adaptability in mind. Motorized recline options, adjustable headrests, and customizable seat depths ensure that each user can fine-tune their position for maximum comfort. The ergonomic

support built into every piece allows viewers to enjoy long movie marathons or casual lounging without strain. Plush cushioning and premium materials add to the sense of luxury, turning every viewing into a truly cozy experience.

ENHANCING THE VIEWING EXPERIENCE

A major advantage of Cineak’s adjustable seating is its ability to improve sight-lines within a room. Fixed sofas or chairs can sometimes obstruct views, making it harder to stay immersed in the action. Cineak’s thoughtful design solves this by giving users full control over seat angle and height, so everyone enjoys a clear, uninterrupted view of the screen. This level of adjustability minimizes distractions and heightens the feeling of being fully absorbed in the moment.

STYLE MEETS FUNCTION

Cineak also recognizes that aesthetics are just as important as comfort. Their sofas are designed to complement a wide range of interiors, whether homeowners prefer modern minimalism or a warm, vintage-inspired look. Neutral fabrics and rich textures bring a timeless elegance, while sleek silhouettes and clean lines create a contemporary feel. The result is a space that looks as good as it feels—perfect for relaxation or entertaining guests.

BUILT TO LAST

Every Cineak piece reflects a commitment to exceptional craftsmanship. From premium leathers to high-quality textiles, the upholstery materials are carefully chosen not only for their visual appeal but also for their durability. This means that Cineak’s sofas don’t just deliver immediate comfort; they remain a long-term investment, ensuring years of stylish and reliable use.

A TRUE ENTERTAINMENT HAVEN

By combining ergonomic innovation, refined design, and uncompromising quality, Cineak helps homeowners craft media rooms that are more than just functional—they’re cozy havens for entertainment and relaxation. Whether enjoying a blockbuster, binge-watching a series, or simply lounging with friends, Cineak seating turns every experience into something special.

A STUNNING HOME CINEMA THAT COMBINES CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY, EXPERT SYSTEM DESIGN AND CAREFUL INSTALLATION

As part of an extensive renovation to an exceptional London home, Imagine This was commissioned to design and install a stateof-the-art private home cinema for a client who demanded the very best in audiovisual performance. Understanding the requirements for this project and the products that would be needed to deliver such a result, Imagine This contacted DbM to discuss solutions from the likes of Barco Residential, Meridian and Trinnov.

The home was being lovingly refurbished to provide a London base for the client’s family. With meticulous planning and an unrelenting eye for detail, the client and his team were focused on creating an elegant and lavish home, with all the modern benefits of the very best in home electronics.

The primary goal was to create an immersive, luxurious experience that surpasses the audio and visual quality of commercial cinemas. The client requested uncompromised audio quality with precise sound reproduction and support for multiple formats, including Dolby Atmos and high-resolution music playback.

PRODUCT SELECTION

Meridian Audio was selected as the speaker brand for this project due to the company’s reputation for delivering outstanding audio quality and innovative engineering. Known for its Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology and active loudspeaker designs, Meridian speakers offer supreme accuracy and performance.

The selected system components included three ultra-shallow Meridian DSP640.2 loudspeakers for the left, centre, and right channels. These speakers were chosen for

their powerful output, clarity, and ability to handle the dialogue and high-energy sound effects. To create a fully immersive Dolby Atmos experience, Meridian DSP320.2 loudspeakers were used for the surround and height channels. These models offer exceptional accuracy and seamless integration with the front channels. To provide an understated aesthetic, the height speakers were painted with the ceiling fabric pattern and the rear speakers were mounted within bespoke artisan side-tables. Two Meridian DSW600 shallow-depth, digital active subwoofers were installed to deliver deep, impactful bass, down to 24Hz.

“The Meridian speakers deliver crisp, clear dialogue, and a powerful, balanced low end, fully immersing the audience in music and movie soundtracks,” comments Guy Singleton, Managing Director of Imagine This. “The surround and height channels provide the enveloping sensation the client desired, making them feel as though they are truly in the middle of the action.”

To integrate all the digital active loudspeakers, Imagine This selected a Meridian Digital Theatre Controller. This high-resolution interface is equipped with Meridian’s (MHR)

High-Resolution Audio output and a simple IP control interface for the Crestron control system. A Trinnov Altitude processor was used for the cinema processing, providing a Dolby Atmos immersive audio decoder and natively processing high-resolution 24-bit, 96K audio.

A 4K Barco Balder projector and acoustically transparent bespoke screen were installed to complement the audio setup with a highperformance visual experience. To provide a discrete solution for the projector, the Balder was installed within an in-ceiling mount, which lifts the projector away into the ceiling when not needed. The mount was painted with the ceiling fabric pattern to ensure that it was unobtrusive when not in use.

The room was treated with acoustic materials to optimise sound performance. Bass traps, diffusers, and absorbers were installed to minimise reflections and ensure even sound distribution. Trinnov’s Optimiser system was employed to fine-tune the system, compensating for acoustical anomalies in the space.

PROJECT INSTALLATION

The installation was carried out in close collaboration with the client’s interior designer, cabinet maker and building contractor. The Imagine This team carefully specified the components to ensure that the technology complemented the aesthetics of the room, whilst not compromising on the technical performance.

The project required detailed calibration of the audio and video systems. Meridian’s builtin DSP and Trinnov’s Optimiser technology allowed the team to achieve an exceptional soundstage and immersive surround sound experience. Every detail, from the placement

of the seating to the speaker axes, was meticulously planned to create an exceptional experience for all listeners.

This home cinema space embodies comfort and sophistication, centred around an unusually constructed sunken seating area, which is thoughtfully designed to immerse viewers in a luxurious and intimate environment.

Providing an unsurpassed technical performance was of the highest priority, so meticulous attention was paid to the challenges of the sunken seating position. The technical design addresses the unusual requirements of the viewing position using the correct placement of speakers, the clever use of acoustic materials and precise video calibration.

The rear speakers were cleverly integrated into the room by being housed in custom-made tables that were positioned behind the seating area. The bespoke tables were specifically designed to conceal the speakers, allowing sound to project freely, while maintaining the room’s sleek aesthetic. To avoid unwelcome

resonance or vibrations, the integrator used damping materials to isolate the speakers from the tables. This ensures that the audio remains distortion-free, whilst maintaining the room’s luxury aesthetic and ensuring the speakers blend seamlessly and imperceptibly into the décor.

“This exceptional project showcases how Barco, Meridian and Trinnov products can be the cornerstone of a luxury home cinema installation,” concludes Guy. “The combination of cutting-edge technology available via DbM, our expert system design, and careful installation resulted in a cinema that not only meets but exceeds the client’s requirements for both performance and aesthetics. This project stands as a testament to what is possible when the highest standards in audio engineering, system design and expert installation come together.”

Simplifying AV Systems for Seamless Luxury

For years, custom integration has often been defined by complex racks of equipment, layers of control systems, and touch panels full of options that the client never uses. But in today’s market, true luxury lies not in complexity, but in simplicity.

At NAD Custom Install we believe the role of the integrator is to design systems for the end user, not for the engineer. This is easily said but what does that mean in practice? Designers need to create tailored systems that feel effortless to use yet deliver uncompromising audio performance. Simpler systems don’t just reduce frustration for clients – they create reliable, fit-and-forget installations that free integrators from excessive support calls and callbacks.

Technology has shifted dramatically. Once, whole-home AV integration required central control processors, matrixes, and dedicated touch interfaces. Today, the rise of IP-based devices, smart TVs, streaming boxes, and interoperable control platforms means integration can be both simpler and more effective.

Instead of full-scale automation that few clients actually use, we’re seeing a trend toward targeted interoperability: lighting presets activated from a wall switch (via Lutron, KNX, or Rithum), or IPbased smart remotes like AVA that provide control only in rooms that truly need it. These devices carry enough onboard intelligence so that central control processors are no longer essential, keeping systems leaner, more reliable, and easier to maintain.

Networking, IoT, and AV are converging, rewriting how integrators think about designing systems. Traditional video and audio matrixes are increasingly unnecessary. Smart TVs and streaming devices can sit in each room, integrated over the network, with control via eARC, CEC, or Bluetooth-based remotes. While CEC and eARC might sometimes still be inconsistent across different brands, the overall direction is clear: network-based integration is simplifying the way AV is distributed and controlled.

This simplification doesn’t mean cutting corners. In fact, it often shifts budgets toward what matters most: better performance and better design. Clients are able to invest in higher-quality amplification, discreet loudspeaker systems, or custom finishes when they aren’t paying for overly complex infrastructure.

At NAD Custom Install we’re helping integrators deliver this new era of luxury simplicity. Our new generation of Cl products are designed to take on functions that once required full-blown control systems:

• Integration with doorbells and notifications into the multi-room platform keeping the system useful and connected but without extra layers of complexity.

• Configurable input triggers that automate key functions without third-party programming.

• The HUB from NAD’s sister company, Bluesound, lets integrators add third-party digital/analogue audio sources without the cost and complication of matrix switching.

Each of these features is about enabling integrators to do more with less, streamlining design while still giving clients a seamless, high-performance experience.

For many clients, the true test of luxury is invisibility. A system that ‘just works’ is far more compelling and valuable than one with endless options that requires constant hand-holding. By focusing on reliability and intuitive operation, integrators reduce the need for ongoing support (even if you have a maintenance contract) and increase client satisfaction.

Simplicity also provides longevity. A system that is easier to use is also easier to live with, ensuring clients stay happy with their investment for years to come. For dealers, that means fewer headaches and more time to focus on new projects rather than ongoing fixes.

The shift from more complexity to more experience is an opportunity for integrators. NAD Custom Install encourages our partners to ask the simple question: Does this system serve the client’s daily life, or the designer’s technical ambition? By designing with simplicity in mind, integrators create systems that are intuitive, reliable, and ultimately more luxurious.

We see this as the future of custom installation: not stripped-back systems, but smartly designed, seamlessly integrated solutions where performance and elegance take center stage.

Because when it comes to true luxury living, simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

BARCO RESIDENTIAL HEIMDALL: REDEFINING HOME CINEMA EXCELLENCE

FOR PROFESSIONAL INSTALLERS

In the world of professional projection technology, few names carry the weight and recognition of Barco. The company further enhances this with a new key release.

The Barco Heimdall represents the pinnacle of home cinema projection technology, specifically engineered to deliver commercialgrade performance in residential environments. This remarkable projector bridges the gap between professional cinema quality and home entertainment, offering installers a solution that will exceed even the most discerning client expectations.

At the heart of the Heimdall lies an impressive combination of power and refinement. Despite delivering up to 6,000 ANSI lumens of brightness, the projector operates at a whisper-quiet 29dB – quieter than most home air conditioning systems. This achievement in acoustic engineering ensures that the Heimdall can be seamlessly integrated into any home cinema environment without compromising a truly immersive audio experience.

The projector’s compact form factor represents another triumph of engineering excellence. Unlike bulky projectors that require extensive mounting solutions and dedicated equipment rooms, the Heimdall’s sleek design allows for flexible installation options while maintaining the aesthetic integrity of luxury home environments. This compactness doesn’t come at the expense of performance – every cubic inch has been optimised to house cuttingedge technology.

ADVANCED RGB LASER TECHNOLOGY

The Heimdall’s RGB laser light source delivers exceptional colour reproduction, covering an impressive 98% of the Rec. 2020 colour gamut. This wide colour gamut ensures that clients experience colours as the content creators intended, from the subtle skin tones in dramatic films to the vibrant explosions in action sequences. The laser technology also provides consistent brightness and colour accuracy throughout the projector’s lifespan, eliminating the need for frequent lamp replacements and ensuring years of maintenance-free operation.

Supporting the latest HDMI 2.1 specification, the Heimdall is future-ready for next-generation content formats and gaming applications. This forward-thinking connectivity ensures that installations remain relevant as content delivery standards evolve, protecting both installer reputation and client investments.

NATIVE 4K EXCELLENCE

At the core of the Heimdall’s imaging system lies the latest Texas Instruments native 4K DMD 0.98in chip. This cutting-edge device delivers true 4K resolution without pixel shifting or interpolation, ensuring that every detail from Ultra HD content is reproduced with stunning clarity. The native 4K implementation provides installers with the confidence that their clients are experiencing genuine 4K performance.

The projector’s DynaBlack technology further enhances image quality by delivering contrast ratios of up to 20,000:1. This dynamic contrast system analyses content in real-time, adjusting black levels to provide deeper shadows and more vibrant highlights. The result is an image with exceptional depth and dimensionality that brings content to life in ways that conventional projectors simply cannot match.

THE SCIENCE OF PROPER BRIGHTNESS

One of the most critical aspects of delivering exceptional HDR projection performance lies in achieving the correct brightness levels on screen. Many installers underestimate the importance of proper screen illumination, often prioritising screen size over brightness density. However, for true HDR performance that matches the content creator’s intent, we recommend maintaining 40 foot-lamberts (137 nits) on screen.

This brightness level is crucial for HDR content reproduction, ensuring that highlights sparkle with the intended brilliance while maintaining detail in bright scenes. With the Heimdall’s impressive 6,000 ANSI lumens output, installers can achieve this optimal brightness level on appropriately sized screens, typically ranging from 120 to 170in diagonal depending on screen gain and room conditions.

The relationship between projector brightness, screen size, and screen gain is fundamental to delivering the premium experience that high-end clients expect. By selecting the appropriate screen size for the Heimdall’s output capabilities, installers can guarantee that their clients experience HDR performance that rivals or exceeds commercial cinema standards.

DELIVERING UNPRECEDENTED PERFORMANCE

When properly configured with the right screen size and ambient light control, the Heimdall transforms home cinema experiences in ways that clients often describe as revolutionary. The combination of high brightness, exceptional contrast and accurate colors creates a viewing environment where clients discover details in familiar content they’ve never noticed before. TRANSFORM ANY ROOM INTO EVERY ROOM WITH HYRISS FROM L-ACOUSTICS

Imagine a single room that effortlessly morphs from a luxurious home cinema into a serene wellness sanctuary, a high-end concert space, an immersive karaoke lounge, or your own personal party venue complete with live band energy.

This vision is now a reality with HYRISS (Hyperreal Immersive Sound Space) from L-Acoustics – a breathtakingly versatile audio solution that enables integrators to turn a single room into a multi-purpose destination. With HYRISS, integrators can now successfully meet the varied and increasingly complex demands for flexible home entertainment spaces from their clients, without destroying the visual harmony of the environment. Where the market has typically drawn a distinction between dedicated home cinemas and multifunctional media rooms, HYRISS effectively erases that divide.

HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?

HYRISS integrates ultra-shallow L-Acoustics loudspeakers designed for discrete in-wall installation, along with dedicated processors and amplifiers, into a unified solution that, combined with proper acoustic treatment, delivers consistent performance across the entire room. Rather than designing around a single “sweet spot,” integrators can create an immersive environment where every inch of the

space feels optimal. Ultimately, HYRISS removes the unsatisfactory compromises afforded by traditional hardware and room design. Using L-Acoustics immersive technologies, including L-ISA spatial audio, Ambiance™ acoustic enhancement, and Anima™ real-time spatial sound positioning, HYRISS enables a room to shift instantly between different roles.

One moment, it functions as a referencegrade cinema. The next, it’s a high-resolution listening room for music lovers, a lively party space, or even a relaxing meditation suite with natural soundscapes. For integrators, this flexibility makes a strong case to clients who might question why they should dedicate space and budget to a single use when they could have multiple experiences in one.

Ask any seasoned integrator what sets a standout project apart, and the answer usually includes flexibility, reliability, and client satisfaction. A system has to meet technical performance standards, but it also has to adapt to how clients actually use their spaces.

HYRISS is built around this principle. By combining high-performance loudspeakers, intelligent processing, and customisable presets, integrators can now design rooms that respond dynamically to the homeowner’s lifestyle. Whether it’s the immersive energy of a live concert stream or the intimacy of a two-channel deep listening music session, the room delivers a tailored experience at the touch of a button.

HYRISS isn’t just about delivering better sound, it’s about expanding the scope of a project. Clients already investing significant budgets in private entertainment want to know their money is going further. By framing the conversation around versatility – ‘why settle for one function when you can have many?’ –it elevates the narrative from home cinema to immersive lifestyle experience, and HYRISS is a perfectly positioned solution that delivers greater value and longevity.

Crucially, HYRISS is engineered as a platform, not a one-off installation. That means integrators can tailor the scale, performance, and applications to suit different projects, whether that’s luxury homes or multi-purpose hospitality spaces, to unlock an entire ecosystem of experiences within a single room of 45m² upwards.

For clients, HYRISS is a powerful proposition. For integrators, it’s a chance to respond to changing expectations with flexible, future-proof solutions will be best placed to capture new opportunities. HYRISS shows what’s possible when sound design steps beyond to open an entire ecosystem of experiences.

Why limit clients to a single home cinema when their space can truly be everything and more?

SONOS: SOUND BEYOND SURROUND

Delivering an exceptional home cinema experience is what many homeowners aspire to, and what professional installers strive to achieve. Professionals know that selecting the right products is crucial to meeting clients’ needs and exceeding their expectations. Sonos products are designed to seamlessly integrate into any home cinema setup, providing installers with the design, performance and flexibility needed to deliver outstanding audio for discerning clients.

A FLEXIBLE APPROACH TO HOME CINEMA

Sound quality is the cornerstone of any home cinema system and Sonos products deliver exceptional audio performance, adding a rich, enveloping experience to movies, TV, games and music. With advanced technologies like Trueplay tuning, your Sonos set-up can automatically adjust to the room’s acoustics, ensuring optimal sound quality in any environment. This feature simplifies the calibration process for professional

installers and guarantees a superior listening experience for clients. It also provides flexibility for the client to rearrange their interior, knowing that their home cinema audio setup can be easily recalibrated.

START WITH A SOUNDBAR

Selling in a full home cinema setup isn’t always that simple – a great way to introduce clients to home cinema is by installing a soundbar. Clients can start with a basic setup and gradually add more components to enhance their home cinema experience.

For example, you can begin with a Sonos soundbar for immediately crisper dialogue, bolder bass and dramatically detailed sound. Later, they can add a subwoofer to deepen the bass, and rear speakers for surround sound to deliver a more immersive listening experience. This modular approach allows professional installers to offer customised solutions that can grow with their clients’ needs and preferences.

Featuring breakthrough Sound Motion technology, the new Sonos Arc Ultra brings home cinema to life like no other soundbar.

An all-new acoustic architecture, powered by 14 Sonos-engineered drivers and advanced technologies, means Arc Ultra fills every inch of the room and precisely places sound all around you. Dolby Atmos brings sound to life with sensational definition and envelops you in a mind-blowing 9.1.4 spatial audio experience.

And then there’s Sound Motion — a significant breakthrough in audio engineering that holds the key to next level immersion. This technology packs unprecedented performance into the Arc’s compact design, unlocking greater clarity, depth and balance. Hear every frequency with astounding accuracy and experience double the bass output*.

Arc Ultra is also engineered to maximise dialogue clarity. Speech Enhancement, available through the Sonos app, makes every word sharper, while Night Sound allows your client to enjoy their favourite shows and movies, at lower volume, without compromising on audio clarity. For a truly immersive home cinema experience, the new Arc Ultra pairs seamlessly with Sonos Era 100, Era 300, Sonos Amp and Sub, and Sonos Ace headphones.

SEAMLESS INTEGRATION AND COMPATIBILITY

Sonos is designed for versatility. The ‘Works with Sonos’ badge certifies products that connect with the Sonos home sound system seamlessly and includes a wide range of thirdparty devices and platforms such as Lutron, Schneider Electric, URC, Rako, Control4, Crestron, Nice, RTI, Meridian and many more. With the Works with Sonos badge installers

can easily identify products that meet Sonos’ exacting standards. Additionally, Sonos products work with all streaming apps and support popular voice assistants like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, offering handsfree control and added convenience.

Continued updates to Sonos products further enhance usability and functionality. For example, Sonos has teamed up with the Royal National Institute for Deaf people to

update the Arc Ultra to provide AI-powered Speech Enhancement. This update delivers improved dialogue clarity to those who are deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus, without the compromises required of traditional enhancement methods. The new Speech Enhancement uses advanced AI to isolate and clarify dialogue without excessively impacting volume or detracting from the overall cinematic experience.

RELIABILITY AND SUPPORT

As a professional installer, you need products you can rely on. Sonos has built a reputation for producing high-quality, durable products that stand the test of time. In addition to their reliability, excellent customer support and resources are available for both installers and end-users. From detailed installation guides to responsive customer service, Sonos ensures that you have the support you need to deliver a flawless home cinema experience for your clients.

With Sonos, partners can be confident that they are offering the best in home entertainment technology, ensuring satisfied clients, successful installations, and outstanding audio. For more information visit sonos.com and follow along on @sonos.
