About Laguna Beach
LAGUNA BEACH, WITH ITS unique spirit and artistic flair, was incorporated in 1927. It is the oldest city in south Orange County.
Steep cliffs, breathtaking views, water-etched coves, rolling hills and deep canyons surround a small, flat basin where vacationers came in the summer to escape the inland heat. Eventually a little village grew up along the sea with year-round residents.
Laguna Beach is unique in Orange County for its dramatic topography and over thirty individual coves and beaches along an 8 1/2 mile stretch from Three Arch Bay on the south to Crystal Cove on the north.
The heart of Laguna Beach is
commonly referred to as “The Village” and is best experienced on foot. Laguna Canyon Road turns into Broadway as it approaches the coast. Broadway ends at Main Beach, where visitors and local alike devote themselves to volleyball, basketball, stand-up paddle boarding and people watching. Galleries and unique shops line the streets south of Broadway. There are many congenial and quaint restaurants with a wide variety of cuisines from which to choose.
At the crossroads of Forest and Pacific Coast Highway stands the “Laguna Gate,” erected in 1916 (as part of an ice cream parlor that is also still there). During the holiday season, Forest Avenue, Ocean Avenue and parts of
Broadway and Coast Highway are filled with bright lights which make the downtown a magical place to visit.
During the 1940s, Laguna’s greeter, Eiler Larsen stood on Coast Highway waving and calling “Hello” to visitors. In 1963, Larsen was named the “Official Greeter and Goodwill Ambassador.” Statues of him are seen in front of the Old Pottery Shack complex and in front of Greeter’s Corner Restaurant.
Laguna Beach is home to so many wonderful music, dance and art festivals making it a year-round destination including Laguna Dance Festival, The Festival of the Arts, Pageant of the Masters and of course the famous Sawdust festival to name a few.

The Arts
LAGUNA BEACH IS THE ARTISTIC FOCAL POINT of Orange County, and a major center for arts and crafts where art galleries abound.
The gentle light and scenic vistas from the coastlines to the cliffs attracted artists to Laguna Beach as early as 1913. The first important artist to arrive was Norman St. Clair. He made lots of sketches of the area that were exhibited throughout California. Thus, a tradition was born. As news of the picturesque village spread, artists came in doves. The artists who settled in Laguna Beach were inspired by the dynamic topography of the area. They painted the beautiful coastlines, towering cliffs and flowering hillsides and their style become known as California Impressionism
Hit hard by the Depression, the artists began hanging their paintings from trees by the side of the road, hoping to find buyers from those passing by.
Some of these artists banded together, rented and refurbished a small wooden building and held their first exhibition in August 1918. Three hundred people

ART FESTIVALS & EVENTS
Art-A-Fair Festival, Sawdust, and Winter Fantasy festivals are held on a 3-acre site in a eucalyptus grove complete with waterfall at 935 Laguna Canyon Road. All exhibitors are Laguna Beach residents.
First Thursday’s Art Walk is a festive cultural evening held on the first Thursday of each month from 6-9pm with more than 38 participating local galleries.
attended the first day and 2,000 the first month. This showing was the beginning of the Laguna Beach Art Association and Museum of Art Laguna Beach is also home to the internationally known Festival of the Arts and Pageant of The Masters. In 1932, the artists banded together and founded the Festival of Arts, a summertime event that continues to attract art lovers from around the world. The Festival, held in front of the Irvine Bowl, offers works by more than 150 artists displayed in outdoor booths. Festival organizers added a Pageant of The Masters, in which live models are used to recreate famous paintings and sculptures. Live narration and a full orchestra accompany the pageant. Today it is one of several summer events.
If you prefer arts and crafts, you will not want to miss the Sawdust Festival in which artisans often live up to a less mainstream ‘alternative’ reputation. Also be sure to visit the Laguna Craft Guild’s show at the Cobblestones at Main Beach.
