With nearly 600 members, the Chamber of Commerce encompasses all of Indiana County. We are one of the largest chambers in the Western Pennsylvania region. The Chamber’s purpose is centered on improving the economic vitality of Indiana County by helping our members and area businesses grow and thrive. Our PACP (Pennsylvania Association of Chamber Professionals) Chamber Accreditation ensures the best practice of standards and value in Pennsylvania.

Indiana County hosts fairs and festivals including the Hoodlebug Festival, Pick-A-Dilly Herb Faire, and the Historic Saltsburg Canal Days. These are just a few of the many ethnic, cultural, and agricultural fairs and festivals. While these festivals only happen once a year, you can enjoy hiking or walking our trails year-round. The expansive Rails-to-Trails system covers 69 miles. Trails in the area include the award-winning Ghost Town Trail (voted Pennsylvania’s Trail of the Year 2020 by PA DCNR), Hoodlebug, Blairsville Riverfront, and West Penn Trails. The trails aren’t the only way to enjoy the picturesque views of Indiana County. There are also 5,452 acres of parks and 792 acres of lakes for you to explore. Additionally, Indiana County is home to Yellow Creek State Park.

COMMUNITY PROFILE

The Borough of Indiana, Pennsylvania is located in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, just one hour east of Pittsburgh. It is the county seat of Indiana County. Nestled like a shimmering gemstone in the heart of Western Pennsylvania, Indiana is a bustling, hometown community that places quality of life and enriching family first values at its core.

INDIANA COUNTY TOURISM

Visit Indiana County, Pennsylvania, located in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, just one hour east of Pittsburgh. Along with being the birthplace and childhood home of Hollywood actor Jimmy Stewart, it is also known as “The Christmas Tree Capital of the World.” The Indiana University of Pennsylvania, attended by over 10,000 students, is also located within Indiana County.

Indiana County is a great place to enjoy the outdoors, too, with a major state park, five county parks, and eight state game lands abounding in wildlife. The Indiana County parks and trails system encompasses 2,500 acres, or 3.9 square miles of parks, regional trails, natural areas and historic sites.

From a family perspective, Indiana County features great schools, superb youth athletic programs, wonderful parks and outdoor opportunities, an extensive network of walking, biking, and cross country skiing trails and small-town communities that thrive. More than 10,000 students are studying a variety of disciplines at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. IUP is home to the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex, a 5,000 seat venue that is home to concerts, cultural events as well as, a variety of sporting events. Indiana is also home of the fan awarded

Best Brewery in PA, Levity Brewing Company as well as the 2022 State Championship High School Rugby team – the Indiana County Warriors.

County is the community of Smicksburg, home to over 325 Old Order Amish families. Experience the beautiful country scenery of rolling farmland, the clatter of horses pulling buggies, browsing in the quaint shops, and tasting the local cuisine. Shoppers can enjoy

selections of pottery, locally made wine and cheese, country crafts, quilts, Amish furniture, and baked goods.

Several historical and interactive attractions make for fun educational experiences. The Blairsville Underground Railroad History Center tells the story of the life of children and adults who escaped slavery during the 1800s. Travel through time while visiting our 24 National Historic Register sites including four covered bridges.

Learn more about famous people who have connections to the area too. Jimmy Stewart was born and raised in Indiana County. The Jimmy Stewart Museum holds many artifacts of his Hollywood career as an actor portraying some of his most famous films: Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Harvey, and It’s a Wonderful Life. While in the area, you can also see his boyhood home, the church he attended, and a statue in his honor.

EDUCATION

INDIANA AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT

Indiana Area School District is located in the county seat of Indiana County and encompasses 82 square miles. The district serves more than 2,700 students from Indiana and Shelocta Boroughs and the surrounding White and Armstrong Townships respectively. The district has provided quality, student-centered education for over 170 years. District facilities consist of two PreK-3 elementary schools, two 4-5 elementary schools, one 6-8 junior high and one 9-12 senior high school.

Indiana, Pennsylvania is situated sixty miles northeast of the city of Pittsburgh. Indiana area residents enjoy the “best of both worlds” – the benefits of proximity to a major city, as well as the lifestyle and sense of community afforded by a smaller town. The total population of the district is approximately 32,000.

INDIANA UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA (IUP)

Indiana is also home to Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), the second-largest university in the State System of Higher Education. More than 15,000 students are enrolled in IUP’s undergraduate and graduate programs. IUP is the area’s largest employer and its presence in the community offers access to many educational, cultural, and recreational opportunities exclusive to a university town.

For nearly 150 years, Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) has delivered a highly personalized, intimate, and affordable learning environment to more than 150,000 alumni living all over the world who are leaders in

almost every conceivable profession. IUP’s commitment to these values has resulted in national recognition and praise.

IUP has been lauded by national organizations and publications including Princeton Review, Washington Monthly, Forbes, Consumer Digest, and U.S. News & World Report. IUP is one of just 93 public colleges in the United States given a High Research Activity (R2) classification by the Carnegie Foundation.

IUP is a proud member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. In addition to its Indiana campus, it has a campus in Punxsutawney and centers in Armstrong County and Allegheny County.

IUP offers more than 150 academic degree programs, more than 40 master’s degrees and 12 doctoral degree programs. In addition, students can complete more than 65 minors – including a unique teamwork minor – and scores of specialized tracks and certificate programs, including certificates in athletic coaching, preschool education, geospatial intelligence, photography and digital imaging, popular music, and public history.

IUP also has a robust career-preparation program, which includes the Academy of Culinary Arts in Punxsutawney; the Criminal Justice Training Center, which provides training for municipal police officers; and paramedic program, emergency services training (EMT) and school resource officer training program, housed in the Institute for Rural Health and Safety. The Institute also offers one of the only driver education teacher training programs in the commonwealth.

CELEBRATING ITS 150TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2025

IUP is spread over 374 beautiful acres, all of which are part of the nationally recognized Allegheny Arboretum at IUP, a living museum devoted to the study, conservation, and enjoyment of trees, shrubs, and vines. The campus frequently welcomes visitors and students from area schools who want to learn more about the arboretum and IUP’s 1,200 trees from 104 tree species. The Allegheny Arboretum at IUP is a member of the Public Horticulture Coalition.

Hundreds of children in the community participate in a variety of camps and conferences at IUP, ranging from athletic campus to the Footlight Theatre program. IUP also hosts thousands of visitors each year to the community for conferences and conventions, especially during the summer months.

Total student enrollment at IUP across all levels for the fall 2023 academic year was 9,254, an increase in enrollment of nearly 5 percent from fall 2022. This includes 494 international students from 60 countries (an increase of 23 percent from fall 2022); and 841 veteran or military-affiliated students.

IUP has one of the largest ROTC programs in the nation and has graduated more than 12 generals. It has routinely been recognized by national publications as a” Best for Vets” university. IUP is also proud of its diversity, with about 20 percent of its student body identifying as minority.

STUDENT NAVIGATOR

Starting in fall 2023, every IUP student –regardless of program or level – has a Navigator, who proactively intervenes when students are facing academic or personal issues. These

18 Navigators work closely with a specialized data analyst who provides information from faculty to provide these individualized, hands-on connections with students. These Navigators are focused on student success and retention and operate separately from students’ academic faculty advisors.

This initiative is part of IUP’s commitment to student-centeredness: the development of a world-class student success model.

In fall 2023, IUP received more than $2 million from the Federal Department of Education for the Hawks SOAR Program at IUP -- Student Opportunity for Achievement and Readiness w– to augment this important work.

With 1,000 employees and almost 10,000 students – who bring in thousands of visitors throughout the year -- IUP is an economic driver for the community, the region, and the commonwealth. An independent economic study found that IUP’s total economic impact on the commonwealth totaled more than $480 million during the 2019-2020 fiscal year. IUP is one of the top three employers in Indiana County, and close to 8,000 IUP graduates make their home in Indiana County.

RESEARCH & GRANTS

Annually, IUP faculty and staff secure close to $12 million in sponsored research and grants; during the 2022-2023 academic year, IUP received almost $20 million for sponsored research and projects during the last fiscal year, almost double from previous years’ funding totals. A large portion of these grant-funded programs provide services to Indiana County residents, including helping children to succeed.

KOVALCHICK CONVENTION & ATHLETIC COMPLEX

One of the university’s major economic drivers and attractions is the $79 million, 150,000 square foot Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex, which offers conference, athletic, entertainment and meeting spaces for both university and community groups and businesses. The facility celebrated its 1 millionth visitor in 2018.

IUP presents more than 200 events a year, most free and open to the community, ranging from lectures, public receptions, art exhibitions, theater, and musical performances.

In addition to 19 varsity athletic teams that have won 104 PSAC championships and routinely compete at the national championship level, IUP offers 18 club sports – including a national championship men’s rugby club –and intramural sports ranging from soccer to bowling.

In 2023, IUP President Dr. Michael Driscoll was recognized as one of the commonwealth’s 50 top leaders in Pennsylvania by City & State Pennsylvania. The recipients are 50 of Pennsylvania’s most prominent and accomplished leaders in government, business, and media over the age of 50 who continue to make a positive impact on Pennsylvania through their achievements, leadership abilities, philanthropic efforts, and dedicate to the betterment of Pennsylvania.

IUP alumni – including many from Indiana County -- are everywhere, doing amazing things, and making the world a better place.

• Dr. John Kopchick ‘72, a native of Sagamore, Indiana County, invented a drug to fight a growth hormone disorder.

• Dr. Bonnie Anderson ‘80, from Indiana, founded a company designed to resolve inconclusive health tests, changing today’s clinical standards.

• Dr. Brandi Smith, ’94, of Indiana, is director of the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute in Washington, D.C.

• Lindsay Ward ’08, of Penn Run, is a television journalist with KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh.

JOHN J. & CHAR KOPCHICK HALL

John J. and Char Kopchick Hall, the new home to the John J. and Char Kopchick College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, opened for classes in spring 2024. This 142,536 - square foot facility is all about collaboration and involving students in every major in scientific discovery – it has labs, classrooms, a state-of-the-art digital planetarium, and a green roof. For more than 40 years, IUP’s planetarium has offered public programs, including programs for children in the community.

HEALTHCARE

INDIANA REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER (IRMC)

Located 60 miles east of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, this independent, 166-bed acute care community hospital is the sole community provider for this college town and rural county. IRMC’s vision is to be the best community health system in the country, and is well on its way. Nearly every specialty of medicine and surgery is represented on the active medical staff, with a mix of employed and private physicians on staff.

Services include advanced imaging with PET/CT, MRI, 64-slice CT, nuclear medicine, and cardiac catheterization lab doing PCI without open heart backup; partnership with UPMC Hillman Cancer Center with IMRT, IGRT, HDR brachytherapy, MammoSite treatment, prostate seed therapy and chemotherapy; Plus, a Wound Care Center with two hyperbaric oxygen treatment chambers; emergency department with more than 36,000 visits annually and an UrgiCare facility; inte-

grated emergency department and hospitalist program; Women’s Diagnostic Imaging Center with digital 3-D mammography, DEXA and stereotactic biopsy; new state-of-the-art 12-bed intensive care unit; state-of-the-art operating rooms put in service late 2015; OB unit with about 350 deliveries annually. And a 16-bed inpatient geriatric psychiatry unit; 16-bed inpatient acute rehabilitation unit; comprehensive outpatient Human Motion Institute building with orthopedics, PT/OT/ST, imaging, rheumatology, physiatry, sports medicine. Plus a comprehensive pain clinic with advanced modalities; total joint replacement program; comprehensive sleep disorders lab and program; advanced neurodiagnostics lab with EEG, EMG, NCS, evoked potentials, transcranial Doppler, and therapeutic Botox Clinic; community dialysis center on campus; weight management and bariatric surgery program; and intensivist program.

hospital’s role in the region, and the importance of remaining independent.

The IRMC Physician Group has over 80 providers, and is growing rapidly. It is a physician-led organization, unique among hospital-employed groups in our area.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE –ADDRESSING THE NATION’S HEALTHCARE CRISIS.

Pennsylvania, and especially rural Pennsylvania, is facing a healthcare crisis, due in large part to the shortage of primary care

physicians. IUP is ready to respond; the university is actively exploring the possibility of a college of osteopathic medicine at IUP. IUP has chosen osteopathic medicine because DOs traditionally pursue careers in primary care, and many choose to practice in rural areas, where there is a critical shortage.

A college of osteopathic medicine would bring health and prosperity at all stages, including millions of dollars in economic impact from students and graduates.

IUP’S PROPOSED COLLEGE OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE

Once established, IUP’s proposed college of osteopathic medicine would be the only public college of osteopathic medicine in Pennsylvania.

One of the first steps to seeking accreditation for the program was completed in November 2023 when Dr. Miko Rose, a board-certified physician in psychiatry and neurology who is nationally known for wellness programming, was selected as the founding dean for IUP’s proposed college of osteopathic medicine.

Dr. Rose comes to IUP from Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she is Associate Professor and Chief of the Division of Psychiatry in the Department of Clinical Medicine and Assistant Dean for Clinical Education.

She is also an Associate Professor and Program Director of the Joy Initiative Wellness Program at Michigan State University. She founded and started the Joy Initiative at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and College of Osteopathic Medicine schools. She completed her medical training at Michigan State.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

THE ENERGY OF INDIANA COUNTY

Indiana County is a major center for energy production, once having three coal-fired electric generation plants and a “clean coal” technology facility ecosystem that turns waste coal into electricity. The three coal-fired power plants were constructed during the late 1960s and early 70s to take advantage of the coal reserves throughout the county and region.

The “clean coal” facility was originally built in 1919 and recently upgraded and converted to utilize waste coal in 2004. The presence of these power generation facilities underscores the continuing importance of coal to the economy of Indiana County.

Indiana County has a mix of industries that contribute to its economy. Some of the prominent sectors include:

• Education: Indiana County is home to Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), which employs prominent educators, administrators, and support staff.

• Healthcare: The county has a community hospital, clinics, and healthcare facilities, leading to a substantial workforce in the healthcare sector, including doctors, nurses, medical assistants, and technicians.

• Retail and Services: The county has a range of retail establishments and service-oriented businesses, creating employment opportunities for salespersons, cashiers, customer service representatives, and hospitality staff.

• Agriculture: Indiana County has a significant agricultural industry, with farms producing crops, dairy products, and livestock. This sector employs farmers, agricultural workers, and farm managers.

• Education and Skill Levels: Indiana County has a well-educated workforce due to the presence of IUP and other educational institutions. Many individuals in the county hold degrees in various fields,

While manufacturing and healthcare have traditionally been strong sectors, there is also a growing emphasis on technology-related occupations, business services, and entrepreneurial endeavors.

• Workforce Development Initiatives: Indiana County places importance on workforce development initiatives to support career readiness and skills training. These programs focus on providing resources, training opportunities, and apprenticeships to help individuals acquire the necessary skills for in-demand occupations and meet the evolving needs of the job market.

• Commuting Patterns: Indiana County has a mix of individuals who work within the county and those who commute to neighboring counties for employment. Commuting patterns vary depending on factors such as job availability, transportation infrastructure, and proximity to metropolitan areas like Pittsburgh.

FUTURE TRENDS

The manufacturing economy has rebounded since the second quarter of 2020. In the latest quarterly Manufacturers’ Outlook Survey, conducted Aug. 14–28, 66.0% of respondents reported a positive outlook for their company in the third quarter, up from 33.9% in the second quarter. As such, positive sentiment in the manufacturing sector has nearly doubled since May, rebounding from the worst reading since the Great Recession, even as challenges persist, and the outlook remains below the historical average of 74.4%.
