Tourism is one of the city’s top priorities for a diversified economy and prosperity for its citizens. In the last few years, city leaders have chosen to spend millions on a new public beachfront and other public infrastructure to make the city and its quality of life more attractive for tourists and residents alike.

Pompano Beach can now boast one of the prettiest beaches in South Florida, with its new promenade, tropical plantings, great lawn, interactive fountain, children’s play area, adult exercise area, concession stand, restrooms and picnic areas. Plans to rebuild the signature fishing pier and an iconic structure for the city’s first parking garage and Tourist Information Center at the ocean are underway. Also in the plans are a number of public art projects, including adding nautical sail-like structures and artistic lighting to the Atlantic Boulevard bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway – the gateway to the beach.

These projects have opened doors to public/private sector development of what will become Pompano Beach Fishing Village – several acres of a themed destination between the fishing pier and the Intracoastal Waterway for pedestrian-friendly public spaces, shops, restaurants and more. Also underway is a project to develop The Shipwreck Park, a unique dive destination and significant artificial reef program, just one mile offshore. The sinking of a large ship anticipated in mid-2016 will be the centerpiece of the project, which will also utilize dozens of existing shipwrecks in the area along with a future snorkel park. Rotating underwater art exhibits are planned for the signature shipwreck and snorkel park.

Other city improvements that helped jumpstart the renewed tourism effort include the 2013 opening of a Greg Norman signature golf course on part of the city’s 36-hole municipal golf facility – Norman’s first ever on a public course. Golfers can now enjoy playing a designer course for public golf prices. This has been an extra plus for many guests of the city’s new oceanfront Marriott Pompano Beach Resort and Spa, which opened in 2014. Next to the golf course, the city also extended the main runway of its historic Air Park for improved private aviation.

Adding to the tourist draw, a rebuilding of the city’s historic district across from City Hall is underway with new facades and streetscapes. Already opened is the Bailey Contemporary Arts center, converted from the historic Bailey Hotel. First-class art galleries on the first floor are free to tourists and the public. Lofts for working artists are upstairs, along with a central upstairs gathering space for interactive artistic events for the public. The rebuilding of the historic area is drawing interest for trendy restaurants and other businesses to locate

there. Just across the street on the City Hall campus will be a state-of-the-art Cultural Arts Center with stage and banquet area, combined with a new Broward County Library. These projects and many more on the drawing board are being developed on time and as promised by a concerted team of city commissioners, the Community Redevelopment Agency, the Chamber, the Economic Development Council and the city’s firstever Tourism Manager. They are all working to expand tourism and offer visitors the city’s promise of Florida’s Warmest Welcome.

The most valuable experience through the Chamber is by far the Leadership program. It exposes participants to the whole gamut of commerce and community affairs in both the immediate area, as well as greater Broward County. Bravo!

The Goodyear Blimp Spirit of Innovation is one of only three blimps nationwide operated by the United States and Goodyear. The Blimp’s air base is located inside Pompano Air Park. It is a 32.5 acre area that has been leased by Goodyear since the 60s. The first blimp housed at the Goodyear Blimp base was Enterprise which was retired in 1991 and replaced with Stars and Stripes. The current blimp was the first Goodyear aircraft to be named by the public. Tours of the base may be arranged by phone.

The Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo began in 1965. The intention of the tournament was to keep snowbirds in the area longer than the winter months. It was also created to advertise the local charter boat business. This year’s Mercury Pompano Fishing Rodeo was held from May 16th to May 19th. The Rodeo has several awards and divisions including Best Boats and Family Division. Anyone who meets the rodeo guideline and pre-requisites can participate. This is a major attraction for both locals and tourist alike.

ATTRACTIONS & ECOTOURISM

One of the largest resources that Pompano Beach has is its waterways and beaches. Its natural water assets make Pompano a heaven for ecotourism focusing on diving and fishing.

Diving & Snorkeling

Pompano is a diving and snorkeling heaven featuring underwater archeological sites and a diverse ocean ecosystem. Divers can choose from a variety of experiences including stingray and shark dives. Wreck divers can feast their eyes on the SS Copenhagen. Snorkeling is an adventure in Pompano. Pompano features easy-to-reach coral reefs that feature a variety of ocean wild live from snapper fish to sharks and more. Guided tours and instructional centers are available.

Fishing

Pompano’s Fishing Pier and the Hillsboro Inlet Park provide public access to great fishing locations. The pier is a great location for snapper fishing. The Hillsboro Inlet Park features wooded fishing decks and bridges. Certain beach locations allow casting and spear fishing. In addition, the boat charters and various marinas offer a great fishing experience. Close by in neighboring communities are also the Deerfield Beach Pier to the north and the Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Pier to the south.

Boating

While boating and marine life is one of Pompano’s many industries, the boating experience can also be touristic. Pompano offers various narrated Intracoastal boat tours, one of which includes the Lighthouse tour. Private boat charters offer scenic private cruises in and around Pompano’s Intracoastal Waterway and Atlantic Coast. The Marina also has boat rentals for those who just want to enjoy a day out at sea. If you have your own boat, you can access the Atlantic Ocean using the city´s boat ramp located at Alsdorf Park.

Canoeing and Kayaking

Several parks feature access to the Intracoastal, inland waterways, and ocean. North Ocean Park located right on the ocean front provides the perfect location for sea kayaking. Alsdorf Park is great for canoeing and kayaking the inland waterways. Pull-outs for canoes or kayak can also be found at Harbors Edge Park, and at the Exchange Club Park. Island Park and Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield also provided water areas designed for canoeing, kayaking and other water sports.

BEACH CONCESSIONS

Along the long stretch of sand and surf that makes up Pompano’s East boundary are various beach concessions that provide tourist and locals with more water-fun possibilities. Those interested in Jet skiing, kite boarding, windsurfing, paddle boarding, parasailing, skim boarding, and surfing can find both rental concession, as well as, various shops that offer lessons throughout the ocean front. Walking areas in Deerfield Beach and Lauderdaleby-the-Sea are also favorite areas for visitors.

The economy of Pompano Beach continued in 2012-2013 to grow and improve thanks to changes taking place throughout the city and surrounding communities. Located in the heart of Florida’s Gold Coast, the City of Pompano Beach consists of 25.8 square miles and has a permanent population of over 102,000. The Pompano Airpark located inside the city boundaries, in addition to being home to the famous Goodyear Blimp, provides a

Tourism is also a significant contributor to the area’s economy as Pompano Beach offers three miles of beautiful shoreline. The city’s public beach has been selected as a Blue Wave Award winner since 2000. The Pompano Beach Fishing Pier is a community icon as is the 100+ year old Lighthouse which guards the Hillsboro Inlet where the local fishing fleet of Charter Fishing, Drift Fishing and Scuba Diving Boats are stationed for the water recreating public.

Casino & Racing at Pompano Park, which opened in 2007. This is the area’s finest gaming facility which includes four outstanding restaurants. And if you enjoy betting the horses, the Isle is the perfect partner to Florida’s only Harness Racing pari-mutuel venue. In addition Pompano has many other fine dining establishments from the nationally known Café Max to Galuppi’s on the Green at the Pompano Beach Golf Course, home to two 18-hole public courses including the recently opened Greg Norman-designed course. You can also head to Palm Aire for one of their three challenging courses.

Due to the mild year round climate, visitors to Pompano Beach can also enjoy its beautiful parks that feature public swimming pools, tennis courts, roller hockey, volleyball, dog park and many other types of outdoor recreation. They can get out of the sun by heading to the numerous stores for shopping. Pompano Citi-Centre, which features Macy’s, JCP, Lowe’s and Sears. Tourists and residents alike enjoy the Festival Flea Market a wonderful indoor shopping market with more than a 100 stores where they can find just about anything they could want.

The Pompano Beach area offers excellent educational opportunities to people of all ages. Among the many educational facilities that call Pompano Beach their home are Public Schools, Private Schools, Vocational Centers, Technical Centers, Adult Education Centers, Colleges, and Universities.

Public Schools:

The Pompano Beach Public Schools are part of the Broward County School Board system. The Broward County School system is the sixth largest in the country, and serves over 300,000 students. Many of these schools feature their own websites, which can be found via the School Board website: www.browardschools.com. Within the Pompano Beach area there are several Magnet Schools that offer specialized programs to students at different grade levels. Magnet programs provide a unique and in-depth experience for students and parents interested in specific study areas. Pompano Beach is home to four Magnet Elementary Schools, two Magnet Middle Schools, and two Magnet High Schools. The study areas range from Communication and Broadcasting to Pre-Engineering. Both High Schools have received awards or top ratings. Pompano Beach High has one of the highest graduations rates, while Ely High School earned an “A” grade for the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 school years.

It provides access to three major airports, six major roads and highways, a county-wide and local bus system, and several seaports, inlets, waterways and railroad services. These transportation services make Pompano Beach accessible to worldwide markets within minutes.

By Land:

Pompano Beach is serviced by Federal Highway, A1A, Florida Turnpike, and I-95. Local Bus Services are provided by the Broward County Transportation Authority. A local free bus shuttle within the city limits is also available. Greyhound Bus Lines provide interstate and intrastate services outside Broward County. The Florida Tri-Rail provides railroad services through the Tricounty area, while Amtrak provides railroad services beyond West Palm Beach.

The Pompano Beach public beach and swimming areas are open from 9:00 am to 4:45pm every day, and during daylight saving time the closing time is extended to 6:35 pm. The beach is patrolled by the Ocean Rescue. The Ocean Rescue is a trained team of 17 men and women who are licensed EMTs. The team is part of the Fire and Rescue Department. Certain restrictions apply about using the beach. Surfers most have surfboards with wrist or ankle leashes to surf. Small recreation paddle or wind vessels must use designated launching and access points located at NE 13th and NE 16th St. Boats and Jet-Skies must only launch off at Alsdorf Park on NE 14th St or at the Intracoastal Waterway. Vessels must stay 100 yards off the beach. The municipal pier is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to serve fishing fans.

The Greater Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce is a business organization of over 600 business and professional people who have joined together for the purpose of promoting the civic, commercial and economic progress of the community. The Chamber is not only the VOICE of business; it is a way for our diverse membership to channel their energies into efforts from which the entire community benefits. Teachers Appreciation Luncheon This acknowledgement of area teachers of Northern Broward County is a statement of thanks for all the hard work they do and their commitment to our future.

Small Business Person of the Year Luncheon

This salute to small businesses is a large county-wide celebration of National Small Business Month. Held each May jointly with the Broward County Council of Chambers of Commerce, the luncheon features each city chamber’s local Small Business Person of the Year.

An Evening of Fine Food & Wine The Greater Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce’s signature event features local restaurants showcasing their finest dishes to guests who have the opportunity to taste wines from around the world.

to Business Expo

The Biz 2 Biz Expo, as it is known, is a trade show held each year that provides members the perfect opportunity to exhibit their company, services and products to other members and guests. The B2B is an excellent opportunity to increase exposure and bring awareness to companies while networking. Each exhibitor provides a door prize and throughout the evening, business cards are drawn at each exhibitors display.

The Shining Star Luncheon is the Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce‘s opportunity to recognize citizens, organizations and businesses for their contributions and hard work to making North Broward County, Pompano Beach, Lighthouse Point, Deerfield Beach and Hillsboro Beach a better place to live, work and play.

Golf Tournament A true Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce tradition, the Annual tournament takes place at various courses. The golf event is a best-ball competition and is the perfect opportunity for members to mix business and sports in an outdoor setting. One of the tournament highlights is the ball drop where numbered golf balls are sold weeks leading up to

the tournament. Shortly before tee off, the balls are dropped from a helicopter over a hole and the closest to the hole goes home with a lot of money.

Pompano Beach Holiday Boat Parade

Florida oldest Boat Parade is the longest continuous one in the nation. Each December the parade of brightly decorated boats navigate their way up the Intracoastal Waterway through Pompano Beach, Lighthouse Point, Hillsboro Beach and ending in Deerfield Beach. Numerous awards are given in various categories. The boat parade has no entry fee to participate or watch and sponsorships, which are the lifeblood of the event, allow this event to continue. The boat parade begins with a Captain’s Party the week of the parade and ends with an Awards Party in January.

Membership Directory

An annual publication of the Chamber, this resource book has a readership of thousands. The directory is funded by member advertising. Distribution includes but is not limited to: hotels, real estate offices for future home buyers, doctor’s offices, mailed to advertisers and all Chamber Members, area newcomer infor-mation packages, Chamber events and to those that walk-in seeking information. This is a great opportunity to bring exposure to individual businesses for a year at a time.

The Pompano Beach Seafood Festival is a beachside party that takes full advantage of Pompano’s oceanfront setting and is held directly on the beach each April. The Festival features fresh seafood prepared in a variety of ways, cold drinks, continuous musical entertainment, a boardwalk bazaar and an area for the kids.

The Seafood Festival is a three day, family fun event which is considered South Florida’s largest beach party with proceeds benefiting nine different civic organizations. Information is available at www.pompanobeachseafoodfestival.com.

Government Relations Committee Advocating for Local Businesses Big and Small

The Government Relations Committee stays in touch with elected officials and government administrators through monthly meetings. They also work in concert with the City of Pompano Beach and their Economic Development Council that is comprised of 17 select business leaders which includes five appointed from the Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce.

Members of the Government Relations Committee have hosted and traveled to meet with legislators and government officials from the State Capital in Tallahassee and the Nation’s Capital in Washington D.C. The Committee also vets proposed local and national business legislation advising the Board of Directors, and the City’s Economic Development Council.

Business with a Twist and Membership Breakfasts Monthly Gatherings open to all members

On the first Wednesday of each month the Greater Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce with sponsorship from local restaurants, hotels, casinos, lounges, social clubs and catering companies host a function for the members we call, Business with a Twist These events are for members and guests who like their networking in a more relaxed atmosphere with less structure plus more fun.

The monthly Membership Breakfast is a more traditional networking event, which features speakers and programs centered on the dissemination of city and civic business information. It’s made up of equal parts what’s new and who is who. Held at various locations around greater Pompano Beach it is a monthly opportunity to make new connections and catch-up with familiar ones. In addition to informative programs and networking, the Chamber recognizes the Broward Sheriff Officers of the Month at the breakfast.

Enterprise Groups

The Greater Pompano Beach Chamber Enterprise Groups are dedicated to providing our Chamber members a forum for business networking in Northeast Broward County. All Enterprise Groups are dedicated to providing members a source of business leads from other group members, Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce members, their friends and business associates in a noncompetitive environment.

The rules of the Pompano Beach Chamber’s Enterprise Groups are simple:

• Be a member of the Greater Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce;

• Only one business of a competing industry is allowed to join each Enterprise group;

• Attend at least 80% of the scheduled twice monthly meetings

• Pass business leads to fellow Enterprise Group Members NOTE: There is one group that requires participants to speak Por tuguese and be a member jointly of the Brazilian Business Group. There are a few more operational/etiquette/ethics guidelines that will be distributed when you select a Group in which to participate.

There are a number of Pompano Beach Chamber Enterprise Groups that members may approach about participation. These groups meet at least twice a month and meet regularly for either for breakfast, lunch or after normal business hours.

We can truthfully say with all the Chambers and networking organizations we’ve been associated with, The Greater Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce exceeds the others, and this is mirrored by the genuine interest in helping and supporting the business community. It is the voice of the businesses in our city, county and state.

Women’s Leadership Connection

Formed in 2013, the Women’s Leadership Connection focuses on providing support to women in all facets of business – whether they are employees, entrepreneurs, mid-level administrators, or senior management. The Chamber’s Women’s Leadership Connection hosts quarterly programs featuring speakers who share their business and personal strategies for success, plus events to assist women’s professional development.

Education Task Force

Economic development and workforce readiness in greater Pompano Beach is the goal of the Education Task Force. The group works to unify efforts of, civic organizations, city committees, churches, and the PTAs. They work to improve and enhance the public schools in Northeast Broward County. The Task Force meets quarterly and acts as a catalyst forming partnerships between schools and businesses. The Task Force supports the annual Teacher’s Appreciations Luncheon.

Marketing Committee

The Chamber’s Marketing Committee works to address how to use the Chamber’s resources to attract new member and retain existing ones to plan and execute membership growth plan consistent with Chamber major initiatives, to assist with membership retention and expansion through a proactive program of contacting members and non-members and promoting Chamber benefits, events, and services.

Charles “Chuck” Bell was honored by the Chamber of Commerce as Pompano Beach’s 2015 Small Business Person of the Year. The honor was presented at a luncheon organized by the Broward County Councils of Chambers of Commerce during national Small Business Week.

Chuck is a local attorney who began his legal career as an attorney in the United States Army Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps. After serving his country, he continued his litigation career practicing mainly in Broward, Dade, and Palm Beach Counties.

Prior to founding the law firm of firm Bell & Bell, P.A. with his brother Brian, Chuck litigated complex personal injury cases defending doctors accused of medical malpractice. This litigation experience has allowed Charles to provide excellent representation to his injured clients.

Since joining the Greater Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce, Chuck has proved to be an enthusiastic member involved in numerous Chamber Committees and activities.

After participating in the Chamber’s leadership program “Leadership North Broward,” Chuck chose to get involved in the programming for the seven-month class which evolved into co-chairing the program for 2014-2015.
