Letter from AIS Board of Trustees Chairman Alan Colberg Dear Parents, The commitment by our extraordinary AIS community to provide our students with a world-class international education has led to significant progress during the 2008/9 school year toward our dual aspirations of being a benchmark for excellence in international education and a great Atlanta school.

We have now achieved many of our major goals outlined in the AIS 2005-10 strategic plan. We have fully launched the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (MYP), stabilized enrollment near our long term maximum and have taken important steps toward upgrading facilities and technology. We also completed our community principles plan, which sets out the values upon which our distinctive AIS community is based. More strides will be made during the 2009/10 school year, and I feel confident that the many successes we’ve achieved as part of this process will put us in an excellent position to start developing our next AIS strategic plan for 2011-2015. We are also pleased to report that we have completed the first part of the Council for International Schools (CIS) re-accreditation process, which is an extensive 18-month self-study during which we assess our performance in all areas of our school. We are on track to have the full re-accreditation process successfully finished in the spring of 2010. Upon receiving the official designation as an MYP school in 2008/09, AIS became one of only ten schools in the United States to offer the full continuum of the IB curriculum. The IB diploma scores and college admissions results of the class of 2009 are a true testimony to the strength of an IB education at our school. AIS graduates achieved a 93% pass rate for the IB Diploma this year, beating the 79% world average by far! Of the 66 graduates of the AIS Class of 2009, 23 or 35% earned bilingual diplomas, demonstrating native-level abilities in two or more languages, far surpassing the 11% worldwide average. Finally, an impressive 78% of our graduates were accepted at Tier One schools (the top 100 colleges in the U.S., as defined by annual US News & World Report rankings). The See Beyond capital campaign, launched last fall, has received tremendous support, and construction of the new Art, Science and Design Center is well underway. During the 08/09 school year, the athletic field was upgraded with field turf, the bleachers refurbished and the back parking lot expanded. Construction of the state-of-the-art, interdisciplinary ASD building should be complete in time to celebrate the school’s 25th anniversary in September 2010. A successful global search for our new headmaster, begun in Fall 2008, resulted in the hiring of Mr. Kevin Glass from the Tashkent International School in Tashkent, Uzbekistan earlier this year. Since starting in July, Kevin has quickly become an enthusiastic and integral part of this school, and we welcome him and his family into our community. These challenging economic times have made financial aid a critical priority for the AIS Board in order to insure that we remain a diverse community on all dimensions. We are pleased to report that in 2008/9, 18% of our students received some level of financial aid. Our accomplishments this school year would not have been possible without the generosity of our donors and the dedication and support of the entire AIS community. Atlanta International School sincerely appreciates those who have generously donated to our efforts. Contributions are fundamental to our students’ success. These worthwhile investments dramatically enhance key areas at the school such as teacher training, scholarships, enriching classroom programs, and upgrades around the campus. YEAR-END TOTAL GIVING CALCULATION
To fully acknowledge the valuable – and often times multiple – contributions our supporters make, we combine all of our donors’ donations and purchases, to either the Annual Fund or a Special Event, made between July 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009. Using the following formula, we calculated each donor’s total Giving Contribution for the year: GIFTS OF CASH OR SECURITIES
+ Matching Gifts from employers * + Special Event participation (less any goods or services received) + Special Event item purchases (less the fair market value) + In-kind gifts for the school’s operations (according to fair market value) + Auction item donations (according to their original fair market value once they are sold) = Total Giving Contribution for the year 4 2008-2009 annual report

In 2008 AIS launched a $16 million campaign to build an Art, Science and Design Center. AIS will soon have a light-filled, environmentally friendly, LEED-designed classroom building that will allow us to continue to further develop and implement our educational advancements within the IB curriculum. Students and families throughout the school have already benefited from the recently-completed, 100,000 square-foot sports field and refurbished bleachers as well as 100 new parking spaces and an additional carpool drop off point created as a part of the See Beyond Campaign. We anticipate that the Art, Science and Design Center will open in September of 2010.

2009 Spring Benefit
Passport to Africa supports AIS and educates community The 2009 Spring Benefit: Passport to Africa on April 4, was once again a sold-out event. The Benefit was held at AIS, and featured a new layout with estate seating throughout the new gym. The gym was beautifully and completely transformed by the décor chair, Tracy Britton, and her committee. Guests were also treated to a new community style food experience with deliciously authentic fare prepared by Sodexo and chaired by Shefali Patel. The entire night was a magical affair kicked off by speeches from Headmaster, Robert Brindley, and AIS alumna, Tini Bennett, and culminated in a performance by Theresa Hightower and her band. Thanks to our sponsorship team, chaired by Jennifer Pendergast and Eleanor Ratchford, a new sponsorship group, Friends of AIS, was formed. Twelve new sponsors participated as a result of the introduction of this new level of support. Strong performances continued from our silent auction, chaired by Linda Bruner, Lynn-Anne Huck and Christina Whitney, which showcased a beautifully designed Student Art display set up by Betsy Carpenter and Cynthia Normark. Two new elements to the silent auction were also added this year. Thanks to the leadership of Laurie Marion and Stefan Terwindt, we hosted our first online auction for the Real World Experience category, raising just over $8,000. Committee members, Jennene Cheshire-Rea and Tracie Slosberg, also reached out to the AIS faculty and staff to establish a new category the priceless AIS Student Experiences allowed guests to bid on packages such as “Lunch with the Upper School Faculty” and “King or Queen of the AIS Menu.” The newly introduced Spring Benefit Newsletter, beautifully crafted by Tasha Boyd, was distributed quarterly and featured information on newly acquired auction items, and sponsor acknowledgement, a different country in Africa.

Close to 100 golf enthusiasts enjoyed a beautiful day for the 2008 AIS/Stanford Group Company Global Golf Challenge held on September 29, 2008, at Atlanta National Golf Club. The event raised a net profit of $14,000. Proceeds from the tournament contribute to AIS’s athletic program. These funds are earmarked by the Sports Boosters Club, which works in conjunction with the school’s administration to develop a list of sports equipment to enhance our programs. Revenue from last year’s tournament contributed toward equipment needed to maintain our beautiful new turf field. Congratulations to members of the SG Construction team: Sachin Shailendra, Frank Spears, Chuck Taylor and Eric Williams. The 2008 winners of the Headmaster’s Cup. PARENT ORGANIZATION REPORT By Adrianne Poulard, Parent Organization President
The academic year 2008-2009 was a year of accomplishments and cooperation for The Parent Organization. Our parent volunteers contributed many hours, both in the classrooms and in the AIS community, to make all our events and activities successful. We worked with the AIS Administration and Board of Trustees on various projects during the year. First, we consolidated the Parent Organization’s finances with the Business Office at AIS. This was a smooth transition thanks to the cooperation and patience of our volunteers and the employees of the Business Office. Second, we were an integral part of the Head master Search Committee. Two teams of parent volunteers interviewed and provided feedback on each of the headmaster candidates. Parents also participated in Town Hall meetings with each of the candidates. Ensemble (the French culture club) along with the Asian Culture Club and various AIS departments sponsored Chen Jiang Hong to come to AIS. Chen is an author and illustrator of children’s books written in French about Chinese culture. He worked with AIS students in French, Mandarin, and art classes. The Arts Alliance sponsored the Atlanta Opera’s educational presentation for the Primary School students. They also sponsored a free performance by the Atlanta Symphony, which incorporated a performance by some of our students. We have been fortunate, over the last few years, to realize a profit on our signature cultural event Worldfest. Because this is an event that is supported by all the cultures represented at our school, we chose to donate these profits to establish a Cultural Enrichment Fund at AIS. This fund was divided equally between the three divisions of the school (Lower, Middle and Upper) with the goal of supporting cultural enrichment activities for the students and families of AIS. We provided many other items for the school during the year. Prior year’s excess funds were used to purchase two Smart Boards for the school and to provide funding for the iHOT Robotics Team. The profits from Jazz in Black and White, the Black Parents Harambee signature event, were donated to the Music Department. And, all our culture clubs – Ensemble, Amigos, Black Parents Harambee, Asian Culture Club and Deutschvergnugen – donated funds to purchase materials for the library in their target languages. Every year the PO provides thousands of volunteer hours and monetary assistance to the school. We do this through our culture club activities, room parent activities, and our various committee events. We had an extremely successful year in terms of cooperation and volunteerism. We look forward to another productive year in 2009-2010.
