SUGAR TO SPICE—La Metro has it all. Ponce City Market’s new tapas concept brings heat to Midtown, providing an authentic Spanish experience. No stranger to the Atlanta area with multiple local eateries to line his resume, including El Super Pan which resides across from La Metro in the main atrium of Ponce City Market, chef proprietor Hector Santiago knew what Atlanta was missing and filled an untapped market. “I really want to stay true to Spanish tapas bars and that kind of communal hanging out,” says Santiago, inspired by his many trips abroad. Named after a landmark building and community hub in Madrid, the restaurant evokes a similar feeling. “My favorite building, the Metropolis, has a lot of character, strength, and finesse,” says Santiago. “And being in Ponce City Market is like being in the middle of town at the Metropolis.” Although Atlanta is a newer city 30
in comparison, Ponce City Market holds a long history and is a historic preservation success story, as is true of many Spanish buildings. “It shows Spain—it doesn’t show us,” says Santiago of the interiors. “That’s the goal with everything and how we wanted the place to look.” Colored glass windows and tile transport guests to the vibrant streets of Spain. The bar seating evokes a metropolitan feeling where strangers do not exist and community is found at bustling tapas bars. Nearby gallery walls are composed of dancers, matadors, and the balance of Spanish culture where both softness and strength, something light and something bold coexist. These opposing forces are evident in the menu where quick counter-service bites shine as bright as the 500-day-aged ham. “I tried to keep it all very authentic,” says Santiago. Shrimp al Ajillo is cooked in olive oil, giving it a sweetness, while chilies add spice. Santiago notes that Puerto Rico has their own version of this dish—shrimp and garlic—which was a favorite of his when growing up there. Authentic eats continue with an array of tasty tapas including the Patatas Bravas. Fresh from the fryer, crispy potatoes are paired with Spanish hot sauce, and aioli balances the flavors. “It’s delicious and different from every other hot sauce you know with just enough spice to have you craving more,” says Santiago. Despite the speedy service, dishes are never rushed. The aging process for the goat’s milk in the Caña de Cabra is over three months long. Add a little sweetness with decadent dessert selections. Guests can opt for an authentic offering like the Crema Catalana Espuma, Spanish custard foam with burnt sugar, or stay tried-and-true with the ever-popular churros and chocolate. Just as indulgent, the drink menu is dotted with cava, vermouth, beer, and Spanish wines, as well as creative cocktails— like the Golden Martini with gin and vermouth. “Every time I have it, it tastes like a sunny day in Madrid,” says Santiago. Also on the can’tmiss list, the Adonis cocktail with vermouth, amontillado sherry, and orange bitters is full of flavor. On the go or dining in, La Metro opens its doors to everyone. “It’s simple,” says Santiago. “Everybody deserves great food.” And La Metro is the place for just that. lametroatl.com

FRONTING THE MARSH of Georgia’s famed coastal destination Sea Island, a newly built Mediterranean-style home is a case study in artful architecture and high-style design—and is now a covetable retreat for an Atlanta couple and their extended family. Architect Josh Youngner, who worked off a schematic design by original architect Thomas Thaddeus Truett, and interior designer Courtney Decker created a home that highlights the incredible marsh views and grand architectural gestures in nearly every room. “They wanted a relaxed, comfortable space where they could entertain friends and their large, extended family,” says Decker, who established abundant entertaining spaces, dashed communal rooms with performance fabrics, and sprinkled guest bedrooms with fun patterns and coastal hues. While newly constructed by builder Van Waters, the character-rich, brick home with a two-piece barrel roof feels as if it’s always been there. “The vision from the beginning was to paint the brick, and we gave it just the right opaque sheen to make it look older,” says Youngner, adding that they used a heavy mud set barrel tile on the roof for an authentic look and even boosted tiles to mimic past repairs. The entryway gallery begs a long pause: Crisp plastered walls point attention to a groin vault ceiling with arches on repeat, and light-washed patterned terracotta floors defy the traditional orange palette. “We wanted a clean and open 63

TWO DECADES AGO, designer Carolyn Kendall of Alcott Interiors and architect Van Pond Jr. of Van Pond Architect joined forces to create their clients’ Nashville home. It made sense, then, for the pair to come together 20 years later to create the family’s ultimate country retreat. This time around, the style directive was different: Eschew any formal leanings and create a fresh take on a camp. The goal, says Pond, was “for the house to feel like it had been a cottage and added on to over the years.” So, Pond and Charles Richardson of Treetop Builders created a rambling Arts and Crafts-inspired home—or as Pond calls it, “a generational farmhouse”—centered around the kitchen, dining, and living room. Tennessee limestone and Douglas fir set the rustic tone, but that doesn’t mean dark and gloomy. “We went lighter with the wood’s color,” notes Kendall. “It’s more sophisticated.” Kendall’s philosophy is that every space in a home can be unique, but there has to be a common thread. In this case, it was all about the surroundings. “Large windows create a brightness,” she says. “Views of nature are everywhere.” Shades of green are found on the dining chairs and the living room’s swivel chairs, while the kitchen is a showcase of forest green set against shiplap, quartzite, and a stained-wood hood that plays to the ceiling beams. The hue continues into

When designing the kitchen, Dana Lynch had a head start—her firm’s developer services division (Bspōk Precision Homes) curated the interior design program for the community. This included three distinct styles—the clean, European-inspired Belgian, the sleek Aspen, and the more traditional Vernacular. While the showhouse falls into the latter, Lynch knew she wanted to break from the mold, picturing a cool, young couple updating an inherited family home. Working closely with McKinney Builders, she chose an earthy green for the under cabinets and upgraded the vent hood and backsplash with luxe marble. To infuse personality, Lynch sourced pieces from her private collection, like colorful Murano glass decanters, a large midcentury oak lamp, and a slab of teak. A kismet discovery of vintage wood stools from a Burton home—along with an oversize photograph hung over the glass windows—complete the vision. “It’s the juxtaposition between different design styles that activates space and grabs attention,” says Lynch, who ultimately gifted the stools to the home’s new owners “knowing they needed to stay with the house.” 102

Establishing a welcoming entrance for the showhouse, Nancy Felton envisioned a front porch for unwinding and communing with the wilderness. And while the result is serene, the process proved challenging, given the porch’s long and narrow layout. To maximize functionality and comfort, Felton created two distinct areas—a petite breakfast nook and a second, more relaxed seating area. “In the mornings, it serves as a peaceful spot to enjoy a cup of coffee while taking in the stunning views of Lake Burton. In the
evenings, it becomes a cozy haven to relax, breathe in the fresh air, and appreciate the tranquility of the surroundings.” Focusing on simplicity and intentional design, she kept circulation clear and the main door unobstructed. Rather than filling the space with unnecessary elements, Felton carefully selected the right pieces to maximize both usability and aesthetic appeal. Planters filled with faux greenery offer a low-maintenance solution for homeowners splitting time between residences. 103

MINUTES AFTER LANDING in Panama City, Panama, we’re whizzing past downtown’s glimmering skyscrapers for Casco Viejo, a historic quarter that’s a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site dating back to 1673. The city’s modern skyline soon gives way to the old district’s brick-paved streets, colorful buildings with flowers tumbling over balconies, and a sprinkling of crumbling ruins and centuries-old churches. We’re staying at the Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo, a waterfront hotel with French Colonial good looks that vaunts its own storied past—once a 1900s social club that hosted Albert Einstein and Queen Elizabeth II. Those glory days still prevail thanks to a chic staff donning Panama hats, butlers who’ll unpack guests’ luggage and draw warm bubble baths, and design accents that call to the country’s heritage and gems like the Panama Canal. While planted in the humming historic quarter, the Sofitel feels like a secluded resort, with a lush terrace and an infinity pool that hovers above the Pacific Ocean. It’s the perfect prelude to dinner at Caleta, where local ingredients and fresh seafood, like croaker cooked in clay and kampachi marinated in passion fruit, are stars of the menu. Late-night, we hunted down the hotel’s hidden speakeasy, Arcano, to sip rum-tinged cocktails. Coffee is king in Panama, and while coffee shops like Sisu Coffee Studio dot the district, the coffee ritual at Vera Café offers the chance to indulge in the prized Geisha coffee paired with exquisite bites. The quarter is also ripe with gastronomic experiences, but don’t miss dinner at Maito, a steady on Latin America’s “50 Best” list that mingles Panamanian ingredients with Asian flare. We feasted on fresh ceviche, comforting
chicken soup, wonton shrimp dumplings, and sea bass bathed in curry sauce. While visiting the Panama Canal is a must—we suggest a VIP tour with a local guide to see the lock system in action—one day should be dedicated to experiencing Panama’s natural beauty. We booked a customized day excursion with El Trip de Jenny, a locally owned company that focuses on nature and cultural experiences. We soared through the treetops of the Gamboa rainforest on a cable car, hunted for sloths and monkeys, and wished we had booked other day trips to visit the indigenous Emberá Village, or swimming and snorkeling in the San Blas Islands.
