EMBARK ON A LATIN culinary tour—no passport needed. Located in Uptown Atlanta, Peruvian restaurant and ceviche bar Madre Selva offers an unforgettable immersive experience. The first U.S. restaurant debut of owners Juan Segura and Francisco Puerta, Madre Selva fills a gap in the city’s culinary scene. “Atlanta needed this,” says Segura. “There’s only a handful of restaurants like this in the city, and in this area we are one of the first.” With Selvasana, a swanky smoothie spot in Chattahoochee Food Works, and a restaurant in Colombia—where Segura is from—the owners are blazing a new trail, bringing in talent and influence from across the globe. Colombian-style doors set the tone for the captivating evening to come. Upon entering, guests are greeted with a handcleansing ritual of water and essential oils. Translated to “mother of the jungle,” Madre Selva abounds with bold color

and culture. “We wanted to bring a piece of Latin America to Atlanta—it is more than just Peruvian,” says Segura. The medley of Latin influence stems from the restaurant’s top-tier talents, hailing from Peru to Colombia and Miami. Peruvian cuisine can be characterized by its freshness and unique mix of flavors. “Peru has influences from Asia, not just Japanese but also Chinese,” says Segura. “Because of this we’re doing everything from ceviche to tiradito and even sushi rolls soon.” With market-fresh fish bought almost daily, Madre Selva’s selection of seafood dishes shines bright—particularly at the cold bar where guests can indulge in delicious raw offerings. On the dinner menu, executive chef Carlos Enriquez stuns with his creamy Octopus Tiradito with olive leche de tigre, avocado, red onion, and aji limo. “This is my favorite dish,” says Segura, “and it’s actually one of the reasons Carlos ended up getting the job—because I loved

the octopus!” Another instant classic and Peruvian staple, the Lomo Saltado features stir-fried tenderloin beef, onions, and aji amarillo served with Peruvian potatoes and white rice with choclo. “Everything in the kitchen is done with charcoal, so it gives it a unique smoky taste,” says Segura. For indecisive diners, order the Ceviche Trio. From house-crafted infusions to frothy Pisco Sours, the drink menu adds another layer of showmanship thanks to beverage director Alex Holender—who moved to Atlanta from Peru just eight months ago. Based on an ancient ritual, the Echoes of Chavin cocktail brings health and good fortune. Crafted with tequila, herbal kombucha, and sage, the smoky display is a can’t-miss indulgence. Summer evenings are elevated by the breezy patio where alfresco dining is the cure for any long day. Handcrafted Colombian elements—from shady patio umbrellas to whimsical light fixtures—dot the interiors. Adding further artistry, a vibrant jungle mural spans the back wall and was handpainted by artist Camilo

W WHEN A 1917 Tudor designed by famed Atlanta architect Neel Reid quietly went up for sale in Druid Hills, architect Yong Pak knew it was perfect for his client, who was on the hunt for a historic home to preserve and update for contemporary living. “He grew up in the area and always loved this house, so it was a full-circle moment,” says interior designer Susan Ferrier, who partnered on the transformation. In addition to a passion for restoring this piece of Atlanta history, the homeowner sought spaces to share treasured collections of art, history, and an impressive trove of Atlanta Braves memorabilia. Pak’s first challenge was to lay out the lot to promote indooroutdoor living. “Druid Hills lots are narrow and deep, so the problem became where to put the garage without blocking the backyard,” he says. In an engineering feat, the team raised the rear elevation half a story to allow easy access from the main floor and sank a three-car garage underneath, creating a subterranean harbor for the homeowner’s car collection. This opened up the backyard for an addition constructed by Michael Ladisic of Ladisic Fine Homes that unfolds onto a sweeping terrace overlooking a pool and new glass-clad pool house beyond. The home’s updated footprint creates a flow that evokes time travel, Ferrier notes, as it progresses from the traditional facade to the contemporary pool house at the rear of the property.

THERE ARE FEW CAREERS as personal as design. Much more than choosing furnishings, a designer’s job is understanding how their clients live. For Gretchen Farrell of Gretchen Farrell Interiors, one project didn’t require that sort of deep dive: her childhood friends’ Fortson, Georgia, farmhouse. Built in 2003 by architect Jack Jenkins and builder Hal Averett, the home is set on a large property that has served many uses over the decades—including as a holding ground during World War II and then as a cattle farm. Today, the original 1930s cottage, man-made lakes, and acreage for hunting provide the homeowners endless space to live and play. “They’re true outdoors people,” says Farrell. “That was a big pull. And the house had all the modern conveniences— including a remodeled kitchen—but in a historic style.”

the decorative glazed pink wall color in the dining room, which showcases many family heirlooms, including the dining table and chandelier. She coated the chairs in Benjamin Moore’s Brandy Cream to add additional lightness.
The bones were there—as well as several stunning pieces sourced by local designer Joanne Gristina—which extended a strong baseline for Farrell to build upon. Tactile wallcoverings, a medley of prints, artwork, and antiques—some sourced from New York and Europe, others found by “shopping in the homeowners’ attic,” she says—impart a feeling that the family has lived there for generations. With large, spacious rooms, the designer played with scale to ensure the home remained warm and welcoming. “I thought, let’s embrace this grand space,” she says of the foyer for which she brought in architectural designer Manuel Tan and architect Sloan Flournoy to add millwork. For a jaw-dropping moment, she used a hand-painted wallpaper that nods to the birds, trees, and flowers on the property. “That space is the nucleus of the design,” she says. “Everything relates to it, but in a subtle way.”

DESIGNERS DON EASTERLING and Nina Long’s longtime client of 25 years, who primarily lives in bucolic Serenbe, recently purchased an old home in Midtown Atlanta’s historic Ansley Park neighborhood. Heavily involved in Atlanta’s arts scene, she desired a city abode where she could continue her philanthropic work, rest, and entertain. “She wanted this to be her pied-à-terre in the city,” says Easterling, “a house that she visits every few weeks, instead of staying at the Four Seasons.” Previously renovated by Shayelyn Woodbery in collaboration with architect Greg Busch and John Willis Custom Homes, the early-1900s house—with Easterling and Long’s playful wallcoverings, glamorous light fixtures, and luxurious fabrics and furnishings— now rivals any swanky hotel. “Before, it was pretty tired and in need of the things that all new houses need, like the rooms and closets were too small,” says

Busch. “We wanted it cleaner and went European with it. There wasn’t much we didn’t touch.” During the transformation, the team replaced the former doublehung windows with French-style windows, added more tailored shutters, and also created a porch at the back of the home that allowed them to expand the upstairs primary suite. “It was a well-done, tailored house and made it much easier for someone to move in,” says Busch. “A lot of times you move into these old houses, and you have to spend months working on them.” “The house had really great bones thanks to Greg and Shayelyn—their specs gave us a great canvas,” says Long. The designers swathed the home in beautiful patterns and rich fabrics, leaning into the home’s original Art Deco and French Modern vibes. “When you walk in the front door, the existing antique light fixture has a Deco feel, so we took that influence and ran with it,” says 97
