INTERIOR DESIGNER LIZ WILLIAMS leaned on tradition and drew inspiration from the landscape when creating this timeless, tranquil bathroom in Buckhead. The master bathroom was added to the 1937 home during a major renovation and needed to exude the same age-old charm as the rest of the home. Hardwood floors, an arched alcove housing a beloved dressing table, and antique china displayed in niches work together to make the bath seem original to the house. “What’s old is new again,” Williams says. “I feel like this looks like it’s been there forever.” The designer took advantage of architect Bradley Heppner’s layout and created a wet area

for the shower. She played off the hexagon tile pattern of older bathrooms, traditionally seen in black-and-white, to create a marble “floor rug.” In doing so, she gave her clients their wish to have the hardwood floors flow from the bedroom into the bathroom. Heppner’s arched nook was designed to house an heirloom table the homeowner has used since childhood, while elegant curves in the Rohl faucets mirror the arch across the way. In lieu of all-white walls, Williams punched up the palette by painting them pale green, yielding a light and airy atmosphere. “We decided that the green and white would keep it crisp and clean and mix well with the marble,” she says. Green Samuel & Sons drapery trim crisply accents café-style white linen curtains in front of a freestanding Avon tub with a classic pedestal base and rolled rim. The same curtains provide privacy for a window above a built-in bench with tidy storage outside the shower. “You really feel like you’re in the trees up there,” she says. “We didn’t want to interrupt the view.”

WARNER MCCONAUGHEY EMBRACED A LOW, sloped space with a design that gave the upstairs master bathroom the feel of a “little cocoon.” A tiled niche frames the new acrylic slipper tub beneath the low ceiling. “The whole space was designed around that tub,” he says. “You’re able to tuck a tub in a place like that and not take up too much room.” The master suite was carved out of attic space, but when McConaughey’s firm, HammerSmith, embarked on a whole-house renovation, they learned they couldn’t raise the roof or add dormers. The windows were original to the historically protected 1930s Druid Hills home. The marble tub niche and curved marble shower wall were careful decisions intended to make the bathroom more comfortable. “By giving it a curved feel, it takes advantage of the fact that it’s tucked up in the attic,” says McConaughey. 24
To better connect the bedroom with the bath, HammerSmith added French doors for a dramatic entry directly into the bathroom. “They’re more like a piece of art there,” he says. HammerSmith also redesigned the suite to create better flow and more useful spaces, including expanded closets. Soft Carrara marble tile, used for the tub niche, shower and floors, and dark stained wood trim continue the theme of Craftsman elegance that runs throughout home. Instead of a stark white box, it’s a gentle space with clean and simple lines, says McConaughey. An espresso finish also sets off the medicine cabinet niche and vanities, which have satin-nickel hardware and handwoven fronts reminiscent of a pie safe. Lately, McConaughey has seen more homeowners opt for smaller bathrooms, but they don’t want to sacrifice beauty, luxury and craftsmanship. “This bathroom is what this house needs. It’s there forever,” he says. “It’s a really timeless project.”

A Kennesaw estate channels the English countryside in the hands of Harrison Design’s lead architect, William Harrison, and interior designer Karen Ferguson WRITTEN BY Jeanne

W WHEN DESIGNING THEIR forever home, a nature-loving family of four looked to their Kennesaw property’s backyard for inspiration. But unlike most lawns, their estate straddles a national park that boasts beautiful fauna, expansive green space and grazing wildlife. What it sowed in inspiration was then reaped by the creative team at Harrison Design. Architects William “Bill” Harrison, Rick Hatch and Robbie Pich, along with interior designer Karen Ferguson, began designing the homeowners’ dream domicile in the north Atlanta hamlet in 2009. From the beginning, the family-focused homeowners wanted the sizable space to feel comfortable and inviting—not unapproachable or overly formal—with an equal emphasis on interior and exterior lines of sight. “Our main goal was to focus on all the magnificent views

we could capture,” says Ferguson. “We did this by incorporating large windows throughout the home, some stained dark to draw the eye outside.” Despite its expansive size—a substantial 14,000 square feet, the construction of which was spearheaded by Rick Fierer of Bildon Construction—Ferguson executed a relaxing and comfortable interior that reflected the family’s lifestyle. Everything from fabrics to furniture was chosen with consideration for design and durability, needing to accommodate everything from dogs and children playing with abandon to entertaining family and friends. Many of the textiles throughout the home, which skews toward a natural color palette so as not to compete with its woodsy views, are outdoor fabrics that won’t fade from the

constant streams of natural night and will resist accidents by pets, kids and overzealous party guests. Ferguson notes that comfort and style went hand in hand as the family selected furnishings for the five-bedroom, four-bathroom home. “They wanted to sit in every chair and sofa before they chose it,” she says. “Comfort was first and foremost a priority.” The warm and welcoming interior furnishings complement the showstopping architectural details throughout the home. Mahogany-trimmed arched windows are a mainstay throughout the palatial property, some equipped with beveled glass windows to catch and bounce light throughout the space. The home’s elegant yet breezy design favors an English estate, as seen in the main floor’s conservatory, located between the dining room and kitchen as a breakfast room of sorts. There is no denying that the dramatic space has some of the best views in the home. The homeowners, who are admirers of the Biltmore and its acclaimed architect Richard Morris Hunt, were inspired by the estate’s arched conservatory, so Harrison and the team designed the conservatory with mahogany arches and Venetian plaster–covered walls. Throughout the rest of the home, where some of the ceilings soar as high as 22 feet, Ferguson found creative ways to prevent the rooms from feeling too austere or cold, from sprinkling in the homeowners’ tapestry collections to wrapping bedrooms with linen wallcoverings. But, says Ferguson, it’s the homeowners who inevitably fill the home with warmth. “The house has an old soul, even though it’s new,” says the designer. “From the antiques to the views, it tells their story.” See Resources, Back of Book.

Miami Beach, at its heart, is known for its glitzy hotels and jet-set nightlife, but nestled among those is one magnificent gem of a place that is more about respite and wellness than dancing into the night. The Palms Hotel & Spa—a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts—is all about luxury, to be sure, but it is luxury with a conscience. The hotel has adopted an “Inspired by Nature” program whereby every aspect of the property and staff adhere to a culture of sustainability and environmental friendliness, winning the hotel numerous awards, including a coveted Green Key rating in 2013. Originally opening in 1939 as the Sea Isle Hotel and undergoing a couple of renovations over the decades, The Palms Hotel & Spa (so named in 2010) still bears subtle touches of the golden era of Art Deco. The lobby, with its massive columns and open-air atmosphere, feels like a throwback to the 30s. Palm trees and drowsy wicker-andrattan fans put you into an imaginary Old Havana movie set. Essensia, the hotel’s restaurant, leads the charge in Miami Beach with its farm-to-table philosophy and is one of the very few hotels with an on-site organic garden. The garden produces herbs and seasonal produce that are picked fresh daily and used in recipes and in signature cocktails, too. For her seasonal menus, Chef Julie Frans expertly fuses South Florida’s cultural influences and fresh, abundant ingredients. She is well known to the regional farmers and food artisans as a champion of fresh local vegetables and fruit sourcing and light-handed, healthful preparation.
