SPRING! IT’S MY TONIC. Towering cherry blossom trees dangling in glorious succession; pretty piles of camellia petals blanketing the ground—my love for Atlanta is practically rooted in the beauty of the season. The subtle fruity fragrance that permeates our leafy surrounds feels downright intoxicating after months of cool, crisp air. It’s as if we’ve been granted permission to be at ease once again thanks to the city’s lush cocoon. Speaking of ease, there’s a sense of joy that pervades this issue. The pride Atlantans take in their home has always inspired me, but these projects rejoice in the art of living well—and their hymn is palpable. As architect William B. Litchfield says of his award-winning project (page 38) , “I’ve always believed that a house tells you what to do—what it needs or wants to be. You just have to listen.” Here’s to drinking in the joy of design this spring, both inside and out, and indulging in its unspoken treasures.

WHERE DO YOU FIND THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR ONE-OF-A-KIND CREATIONS? IS IT CLIENT- OR DESIGNER-DRIVEN? I have a forte for being able to read what designers and clients envision for a space. I prefer to listen to them and see the space rather than rely on too many outside visual influences. Designers give me a general idea of how they want the room to feel, and my best work evolves from listening. My

SELF-PROCLAIMED FRANCOPHILE Meg Harrington and her husband, Scott, built their dream maison in 2008, but with daughter Molly away at college and her sister, Lilly, up next, the couple realized their 6,400-square-foot haven might be more of a headache. They decided to walk through their home and note only the spaces they used daily and—sacre bleu!—in the end, the list consisted of only four rooms: the kitchen, family room, master bedroom, and covered porch. “That exercise sealed the deal. We were ready to design something that was small,

efficient and oozing with personality,” Meg says. After discovering a charming 1930s Brookhaven cottage that was small on square footage but big on personality, Meg began dreaming of ways to incorporate her fondness for all things French into a smart, functional and ultimately chic nest. As with their previous home renovation, the Harringtons partnered with architect Linda MacArthur and builder Michael Ladisic—known fondly to Meg as “the dream team”—to create a savvy space that uses every inch of their new 3,000-square-foot home.

EMPTY NESTERS OFTEN TURN THEIR ATTENTION to reclaiming children’s rooms or basement play areas. But one Sandy Springs couple decided to recreate a portion of their 1.5-acre property that had been overgrown with ivy when they raised their three children. Thanks to a transformation by Bellwether Landscape Architects, the couple are finally able to fully appreciate their

Chattahoochee River home—whether it’s unwinding after work, canoeing and kayaking on the water, or hosting events such as their daughter’s wedding. Sited across the bank from trails in the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, the home’s peaceful view will remain undisturbed. To achieve their clients’ vision, Bellwether created a design plan that married the American Federal style of the 69
