A YOUNG BUCKHEAD FAMILY BUILDS AN ON-SITE OASIS WITH THE DEFT DESIGN HANDS OF D. STANLEY DIXON AND JOHN HOWARD. WRITTEN BY Kate

WHEN A PAIR OF BUCKHEAD DWELLERS approached D. Stanley Dixon to create their dream pool house, they knew the acclaimed architect would be an excellent fit; after all, he’d already won a Shutze award for his design of their main residence, commissioned by previous owners years before. Naturally, he referenced the same New England Dutch Colonial hallmarks, including the gambrel roof, a mix of tumbled Tennessee fieldstone and reclaimed granite, painted wood siding and machinesplit cedar shake shingles for a warm yet refined effect. Other delightful details—such as the mock pigeonnier crowning the garden shed—further define what Dixon describes as a “destination pool,” set deep into the property, fairly removed from the house. For this reason, lauded landscape architect John Howard was instrumental in siting the structure beneath a curving oak tree. Summer months are the family’s favorite for enjoying their sundappled retreat, dining alfresco on the loggia between its two main 62

volumes and lounging on its boxwood-dotted patio. “They spend entire Saturdays here, barbecue grilling, hanging out, watching TV, taking a nap (in the charming bunk room or loft, perhaps) and swimming,” says Dixon, who provided deft direction for the homeowners’ interior design, as well. “It’s youthful, sophisticated and a bit bohemian. The husband is an avid hunter and had a very large European mount that we used as a focal point. It says a lot about them and their personal tastes.” A vintage teak coffee table, rush carpets, Mexican textiles and a sparkling Jean de Merry chandelier add eclectic elegance to the double-height living room, which also boasts limewashed wood beams, painted wood floors, boarded and skim-coated plaster walls, and whimsical windows that keep things light and bright. “It’s old-fashioned, comfortable … a little bit unpredictable,” Dixon says. WHILE MANY PEOPLE THINK of a pool house as an outdoor rec room where not-sorefined furniture and terry cloth towels go to retire, decorator Jennifer Healey of J. Healey Interiors upgraded this concept, designing a breezy and elegant poolside cottage that acts more like an extended arm of the home. For their dream outdoor retreat, the homeowners envisioned a space that easily transitioned with their varying needs: hangout room for their three teenagers, entertaining space for poolside parties, and comfortable guesthouse for extended-stay guests. To achieve this, they enlisted architect Yong Pak of Pak Heydt & Associates to create a fluid layout that complements the main house and nestles naturally into their lush backyard design by Richard Anderson. The family also sought a setup that was inviting year-round. Stained tongue-andgroove Douglas fir covers the walls and ceilings for a welcoming texture that feels authentic against the rock exterior. To create a more traditional look, the design team brought the horizontal layout of the planks into the kitchenette for a sleek, continuous room with a smooth façade that doesn’t skew too rough or rustic. Pak’s streamlined design focused on raw elements like stone, wood, steel and glass, so Healey selected lighting that would enhance the natural beauty of the space without stealing the spotlight. “The way we approached lighting was the catalyst for much of the project,” Healey said. Instead of overly decorative pieces, she chose simple yet stunning fixtures that echo the space. Suzanne 79

ASIDE FROM THE FACT THAT PARROT CAY IN the Turks and Caicos Islands is one of the world’s lushest resorts and remote private getaways (Bruce Willis, Christie Brinkley, Donna Karan and Keith Richards have sprawling retreats here), the island is almost entirely nature preserve. Its appeal is enchanting. People travel to Parrot Cay for the remote luxury, but also to wade in the crystal-clear sea and admire what is perhaps the world’s most pristine white sand beach.
