LIVING ROOM LAUREN DELOACH, LAUREN DELOACH INTERIORS TAKING A SOFT, serene and slightly feminine approach, Lauren DeLoach describes the living room as a reﬂection of her personal style. Relishing the opportunity to act as her own client, the designer employed elegant fabrics to inject new life to furnishings such as antique French armchairs, while elevating accent tables with unexpected textures. Cast concrete garden stools were transformed into drink tables, and a lattice iron coffee table keeps things airy while allowing a full view of the Turkish rug. In lieu of artwork above the mantel, DeLoach made a bold statement by hanging antique Spanish doors procured from The Nicholson Gallery. “I have a real soft spot for antiques and exquisite details,” she says. 37

GUEST BEDROOM BARBARA HEATH, BB HEATH & ASSOCIATES THIS LAKESIDE bedroom retreat by Barbara Heath was inspired by “glamping” (glamorous camping). Window treatments on either end of the plush leather bed were designed with pull-back corners to give the illusion of a tent opening, and Heath repeated their pattern—a delicate yet graphic Belgian linen print by Clay McLaurin—on the coverlet and shams. Antique gilt mirrors and a stately beside chest add elegance, as do thick drapery panels. “These were purposefully heavier in weight for a cocoon-like effect,” says Heath. “I wanted to create a space where you could close yourself off from your surroundings and really have a restful evening.”

FRONT PORCH B.D. JEFFRIES SERENBE’S verdant landscape informed the earthy, organic scheme of this front porch (below and opening spread) designed by the in-house design team at B.D. Jeffries. A live plant wall serves as a striking piece of art while also providing privacy. A custom live edge maple table showcases unique botanicals and hornets’ nests, creating unusual but artful accents. “The table is both beautiful and functional,” says designer Kati Hardwick. “It’s wonderful for hosting parties or casual gatherings.” At the opposite end, woven wicker chairs and a low-slung teak table capture the relaxed country lifestyle that has become synonymous with this pastoral community.

KAE INTERIORS LYNDSY WOODS BROUGHT her vision of a modern farmhouse aesthetic to life in this trio of spaces by mixing old-world charm with contemporary ﬂourishes. Beginning in the foyer, ombré drapery and abstract artwork act as a chic backdrop for traditional barley twist furnishings. In the connecting stair hall, Woods took a bolder approach with Thibaut’s allover feather wallpaper in a rich cobalt blue colorway. A sophisticated brass mirror in the powder room, meanwhile, juxtaposes a rustic red vanity. “I love incorporating contrasting details,” says Woods. “It really elevates a space.” 53

SCENIC CRUISING IN FRANCE For luxury travel with scenery that isn’t stuck on repeat, river cruising is the hottest trend going. WRITTEN BY

TEN YEARS AGO, RIVER CRUISING was a somewhat new vacation option. Now, it’s the hottest trend in travel. The reasons are many, but in general, it is a comfortable and ultra-chic way to sightsee. River ships are low to the horizon and most have floor-toceiling windows—in public areas and cabins—framing views of the shoreline and river. Most river cruise ships accommodate fewer than two hundred guests, so the crew-to-passenger ratio is a plus, too. You’ll certainly want to go with an all-inclusive experience. The super-stately brand, Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours, is at the top of all-inclusive river cruise lines. No need to fret about securing advance reservations at on-board restaurants or shore excursions, and go ahead and leave that special bottle of wine at home. No squabbling over how much you are spending—everything you need is included: airport transfers, tips, meals, drinks, excursions—every62

thing, from the time you land to the time you are dropped back off at the airport, and just about everything in between. So live it up, guilt-free (financially speaking, that is). Scenic operates cruises and tours all over the world, but one of the line’s most popular itineraries starts in Tarascon, in the South of France, traveling up the Rhône and Saône rivers through Provence and Burgundy, to Chalon-sur-Saône. The Rhône River has a prime spot in European history and culture, dating back to its days as the northernmost boundary of Roman Empire. The cities and towns along the way hold riveting appeal, and the ship’s thoughtful excursions allow guests to explore many of them. Scenic delivers 5-star … well, everything. comes down to one service professional for every 3.8 guests. The cruise never feels stuffy or pretentious, and there is no special dress code on board and no requirement for formal jackets or ties. The friendly crew quickly produces the intimacy of a convivial house party, and it is immediately clear upon boarding that you are in for a very special experience. Your very own butler is on hand to help unpack or to shine your shoes if you so desire, Mesdames et Messieurs. Another glass of Champagne? Yes, please. Your personal butler is the go-to person for whatever you need while aboard the ship and will quickly become your best friend. Each elegant stateroom is equipped with an iMac or a Mac mini, complimentary Wi-Fi and a flat-screen TV. Besides offering a variety of stations and movies, the TVs show real-time action from the front of the ship. So, as the ship slithers through the rivers’ many river locks, you can watch the nail-biting excitement from the comfort of your bed. Other features include L’Occitane bath amenities, plush bathrobes, and Scenic’s own “Scenic Slumber Beds,” complete with crisp Egyptian linens, and even a pillow menu. The

cabin design is sleek and masculine with a modern edge. Anthracite grays, blacks, beiges and touches of metallic on the headboard panels give the space a smart, cosmopolitan vibe. Aboard Scenic’s “Space Ships,” several comfortable public areas are available in which guests may relax and mingle. The Lounge and Bar is situated all the way forward on Danube Deck and features floor-to-ceiling windows that allow for spectacular views of the passing scenery. An outdoor Sun Deck occupies the uppermost deck of the ship and features plenty of space for 360-degree viewing, in addition to an open-air lounge and a walking track, and it’s the single best place to perch and marvel as the captain navigates the 15 locks on the route from Tarascon to Chalon-sur-Saône. Every evening, guests gather in the lounge for cocktails while the ship’s cruise director covers all the details for the next day’s excursions. Nothing sets your mind at ease like having every component of the next day planned out in thorough detail, right down to the weather forecast. SITED IN THE HEART of the southern Caribbean, Aruba boasts a topography that’s as serendipitous as it is contradicting. Thanks to the destination’s location just outside the fringe of the Hurricane Belt, east trade breezes keep mosquitos (a common nuisance at neighboring Caribbean destinations) at bay and temperatures consistent at a virtually year-round 82 degrees and sunny. Sandy stretches of beach and pool-blue waters intermix with rugged desert and craggy shorelines to comprise the 70-square-mile island. Yet this antithetical landscape serves as an ideal backdrop for both unforgettable adventure and luxurious repose during any time of the year. Arikok National Park, for instance, which makes up almost 20 percent of the island, is home to desertlike terrain, hidden beaches and stunning vistas. Explore by foot or embark on a Jeep excursion for an up-close-and-personal look at the island’s dramatic landscape. While there, don’t miss the park’s natural pool, known locally as Conchi. Ensconced in lava rocks that serve as a barrier to the crashing waves of the Caribbean Sea, it’s worth the extra effort to witness. Stop by the park’s visitor center to learn about the government-protected land’s culture, history and conservation efforts. Those eager to go for a dip in Aruba’s iridescent waters should try their hand at one of the many ocean activities available on the island. The calm, transparent tides of beaches such as Palm Beach and Mangel Halto—a striking contrast to the topography of areas like Arikok—provide an ideal backdrop for activities such as snorkeling and scuba diving. Choose among more than 20 dive spots, ranging from 20 to 100 feet deep. Windsurfing and kitesurfing are particularly popular thanks to Aruba’s constant breezes and tranquil waters, and the island is known as the windsurfing capital of the world, hosting dozens of watersports tournaments throughout the year. Of course, in Aruba you’ll always find time to decompress. Indulge in a massage in one of Manchebo Beach Resort & Spa’s luxurious outdoor gazebos located along the shores of Eagle Beach, or visit The Ritz-Carlton, Aruba’s 15,000-squarefoot spa for a natural body treatment or massage.
