The Nutcracker performed by Atlanta Ballet
CLASSIC PERFORMANCES THAT NEVER GET OLD
Two Atlanta theaters stage the Dickens classic, “A Christmas Carol” – each with its own flavor. The Alliance Theatre brings a polished, Broadway-level production that’s been a tradition for decades (Nov. 15-Dec. 24), while the Shakespeare Tavern Playhouse offers an intimate, lively version with dinner-and-a-show appeal (Dec. 6-23). While The Nutcracker is staged in cities across the country, Atlanta’s production at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre is especially beloved. The Atlanta Ballet brings dazzling choreography and elaborate sets, blending tradition with contemporary flair from Dec. 6-27. Uniquely Atlanta, The Center for Puppetry Arts adapts the classic Rankin/Bass TV special “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” into a puppet show that delights children and stirs nostalgia for adults. (Nov. 12–Dec. 28).
HOLIDAY MAGIC IN MUSIC
The holidays sound sweeter in Symphony Hall, where Atlanta Symphony Orchestra fills December with seasonal concerts. Expect a mix of classical masterworks, sing-a-long carols and special guest performances. Holiday concerts here sell out fast, but the candlelit atmosphere and world-class acoustics make it worth the effort. Here are some: • “A Charlie Brown Christmas” – Nov. 23 • “Grand Kyiv Ballet: Nutcracker” – Nov. 26 • “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York in Concert” – Nov. 29 & 30 • “Christmas with the ASO” – Dec. 11-14 • “A Drag Queen Christmas” – Dec. 26 • “The Holiday in Concert” – Dec. 27 & 28

OUTDOOR TRADITIONS THAT LIGHT UP THE CITY
A newer tradition turns Midtown into a glowing corridor of lights and festive displays. Perfect for an evening stroll, Midtown Bright mixes large-scale installations with neighborhood charm. Visitors can wander Peachtree Street, warm drink in hand, while discovering shops and restaurants dressed for the season. Buckhead’s Miracle on Peachtree transforms this upscale district into a festive playground, complete with tree lightings, live performances and cocoa-fueled strolls.

Atlanta Vibe y LOVB Atlanta
WINTER 2025-26

ULTIMATE GUIDE TO WINTER DATE NIGHTS IN ATLANTA When the temperatures dip and the days grow shorter, Atlanta transforms into a wonderland of lights, culture and cozy escapes. Far from slowing down in the colder months, the city comes alive with seasonal attractions and experiences that make winter one of the most romantic times of year. BY JOLEEN PETE

larger-than-life animal displays transform the zoo after dark into a dreamy backdrop for a romantic date night. Take an evening stroll through Fernbank Museum of Natural History’s wooded outdoor backyard for WildWoods: AGLOW (Nov. 14-Feb. 28, 2026) and wander among the enchanting, glowing displays. At Atlanta Botanical Garden, Garden Lights, Holiday Nights (Nov. 15–Jan. 11) blankets Midtown in a glow that feels equal parts festive and romantic. When the winter chill lingers, Orchid Daze at the Atlanta Botanical Garden (Feb. through April) offers a lush tropical escape. This annual exhibition transforms the Fuqua Conservatory into a living gallery of color with thousands of orchids in bloom. Few things are more enchanting than lacing up your skates and gliding across ice under twinkling lights with someone
special. Seasonal pop-ups like The Rink at Park Tavern and Skate the Sky at Ponce City Market guarantee laughter and maybe a few wobbly moments that end in smiles. For a different kind of view, take your date to new heights aboard SkyView Atlanta. This 20-story Ferris wheel overlooking Centennial Olympic Park offers climate-controlled gondolas making it a cozy yet thrilling way to see the city lights.
COZY INDOOR ESCAPES
Of course, even in Atlanta, winter can be brisk and sometimes the best date nights are the ones spent indoors. Art lovers will find no shortage of inspiration at the High Museum of Art, where exhibitions rotate frequently, offering something fresh to explore each season. Michael C. Carlos Museum

at Emory University offers an intimate outing with collections spanning ancient civilizations. For couples looking to create something together, Atlanta is brimming with hands-on experiences. Cooking classes, paint-and-sip studios and even candle-making workshops are popular ways to learn a new skill while laughing through the process. Spruill Center for the Arts offers day, evening and weekend art courses in Dunwoody. Atlanta Ballet offers both adult classes and mixers. Then there are the popular Atlanta attractions: Georgia Aquarium, with its mesmerizing underwater tunnels, makes for an enchanting indoor stroll. Its afterhours Sips Under the Sea event on Dec. 5 adds cocktails and music to the magic. World of Coca-Cola provides a playful, sensory experience that’s as nostalgic as it is fun.
SEASONAL TRADITIONS
The Fox Theatre anchors Atlanta’s cultural calendar with Broadway shows, concerts and special holiday performances that feel tailor-made for date night — think “Hadestown” or David Foster & Katharine McPhee. Its ornate interiors alone can set the stage for a romantic evening, while the entertainment ensures you’ll have plenty to talk about afterward. Not far away, the Alliance Theatre continues to impress with its 2025/26 season, and for a refined evening, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s winter performances set the stage for an unforgettable date night.

“Southern cooking is the umbrella that embraces the ingredients of the South and the many traditions of its people,” says Deborah VanTrece, owner of Twisted Soul Cookhouse and Pours, Oreatha’s At Point and The Catering Company by VanTrece. “Soul food draws from those same ingredients, but it was born from the scraps — the throwaways, the pieces others didn’t consider worthy. Soul food emerged from necessity and the genius of transforming nothing
into something nourishing, flavorful and beautiful.” “Black cuisine has a history behind it,” agrees LaToya Franklyn who, with her mother Emily James, run Miss Conduck, a Trinidadian restaurant on Edgewood Avenue. Among its signature dishes are brown stew oxtail, curry goat and Trinidad callaloo. “We made the ingredients speak to us. It also speaks to the adaptability of Black people and creativity.” Delana Winder Reeves and her husband Jason run Delilah’s Everyday Soul at Chattahoochee Food Works, a restaurant based on recipes by cookbook author Delilah Winder, who happens to be Delana’s mother. “Soul food is more than just a style of cooking. It’s a reflection of history, creativity and resilience,” Winder Reeves said. “Born out of the African American experience, it represents how our ancestors took what they had and turned it into something beautiful, flavorful and sustaining.”

WHERE DID IT COME FROM?
Chef Robert Butts
TRADITIONAL OR NEW?
Let’s start with Africa where foods such as African rice, okra, watermelon, yams and cowpeas flourished. When the slave trade began, mainly from West and Central Africa, the enslaved people brought their relationship with the land with them. It was a way to eat but also to preserve their culture and not give in to their circumstances a sort of quiet resistance. “All of this food didn’t come from an island,” said Robert Butts, chef and co-owner of Auburn Angel, who melds rich Southern traditions with global
and Virgil’s Gullah Kitchen & Bar, with three locations, where you will enjoy Gullah Geechee flavored dishes. Atlanta is now celebrating the full spectrum of the African Diaspora — from Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latin, Afro-European, Afro-Asian to African and, in the process, reshaping the city’s dining landscape. Try Verdure Kitchen & Cocktails, an upscale restaurant serving Western and African dining. Led by chef Jean-Louis Sangare, diners will enjoy such African specialties as Suya Lamb Loin, Kedjenou de Moules and Tanzanian Chips Mayai. Over at Atlanta Municipal Market, stop at Afrodish, where a family from Ghana serves native dishes with a Caribbean touch. Enjoy the curry and spicy goat, steamed cabbage and Jamaican beef patties. Internationally renowned chef Marcus Samuelsson, who was born in Ethiopia and raised in Sweden has brought his culinary magic to restaurants around the world including Marcus Bar & Grille on Edgewood Avenue. Among his offerings are Bankhead jambalaya, rice and peas, Mahindi Choma (grilled corn) and slow cooked greens. Besides Miss Conduck, other outstanding Caribbean restaurants include Jerk Cuisine ATL and Spice House Midtown. Tassili’s Raw Reality is a vegan restaurant on the West End where the cuisine is rooted in the Thematic 42 Laws of Ma’at and the Seven Virgil’s Gullah Nguzo Saba principles from Kitchen & Bar indigenous roots. VIRGIL’S GULLAH KITCHEN & BAR
Want a meat and three — a traditional soul meal with one protein and three vegetables? They traditionally were found in small, female-run eateries. Places like those are still around; they’re a little hard to find but worth the effort. One of our most famous ones is MICHELIN Bib Gourmand-noted Busy Bee Cafe, which was established in 1947 by Lucy Jackson. This Vine City restaurant welcomes locals and celebrities for fried chicken, chicken & waffles, black-eyed peas and fried okra. Paschal’s, located in Castleberry Hill, dates back to 1947 and still serves down-home fried chicken. Paschal’s place is firmly in Atlanta history as one of the main locations where Black leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Andrew Young and U.S. Representative John Lewis dined to discuss how to guide the city through integration. Other places to try are Gocha’s Breakfast Bar on Cascade Road, K&K Soul Food on Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway, Auntie Vee’s Kitchen at the Municipal Market
influences. His restaurant in the Sweet Auburn District offers up such dishes as hoe cake & pot licker, potato milk bread and seafood croquettes. “It came to America from Africa but also Jamaica and other countries.” Duane Nutter, executive chef and owner of Southern National in Summerhill, adds “You can put an oxtail on pappardelle pasta and pizza and some people get weird about it because it’s territorial. Oxtail is more Caribbean, where they put it in stews or soup.”

THE SECRET INGREDIENT
“Here in Atlanta, the Black community represents people from all over the world. It’s a true reflection of the African Diaspora — vibrant, varied and ever changing,” said VanTrece. “We are a city rooted in activism, fellowship and creativity. That spirit flows into the kitchen, where chefs and home cooks alike are reimaging what Black food can be. It makes our community and our city that much stronger.“ WINTER 2025-26

Meanwhile in the NCAA’s Division II, both the Morehouse Tigers and Clark Atlanta Panthers will be looking to reach the top of the SIAC conference on the hardwood this winter. The two best teams in the SEC (and also two of the best teams college football has to offer across the country) will square off Dec. 6 at MercedesBenz Stadium. This game is always one of the hottest sports tickets around. That’s understandable considering that the winner of this game usually is a contender to win the National Championship and the loser will be in the conversation to make the 12-team College Football Playoff.

METRO ATLANTA WINTER 2025-26

Y’ALL COME BACK
Y’ALL COME BACK
The new year brings new developments to Atlanta, making it a perfect time for you to schedule another visit. FIFA World Cup 26™ is one of several things to look forward to in the new year. As a host city, Atlanta will welcome eight matches to Mercedes-Benz Stadium – June 15, 18, 21, 24 and 27; and July 1 (Round 32), July 7 (Round 16), July 15 (semifinal). Amid all that excitement, there are more changes and improvements to look forward to in 2026. BY CAROL CARTER
Atlanta Beltline
Atlanta Beltline, the 22-mile walking, running, biking trail that connects 45 intown Atlanta neighborhoods, continues to grow. Late 2025 or early 2026 will bring two new segments to the Southside Trail. 2026 will bring new marketplaces, too.
Atlanta Botanical Garden
Atlanta Botanical Garden soon will be accessible from the Atlanta Beltline. With that in mind, the garden is growing. Just outside the gates, a new space will provide free programs for visitors and a new visitor center will include a cafe, gift shop and parking space for bicycles.
38 DISCOVERATLANTA.COM
Centennial Yards
This 50-acre urban revitalization project is transforming underused property in downtown Atlanta into an entertainment district complete with residential, retail establishments and businesses.
Fernbank Museum of Natural History
Opening late this year, Our Place in the Cosmos in The Star Gallery features a fiber optic ceiling mapping the stars and constellations of the evening Georgia sky. Orkin Discovery Zone, opening in 2026, will enable visitors to step into the role of a scientist, seeing examples of biodiversity through real specimens, observing live animals and building a
bug. Changing Earth, set to open in 2027, will showcase planet Earth.
Martin Luther King Jr. Birth Home
The birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr. at Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park is scheduled to reopen in 2026 after being closed for renovations. The Queen Anne Victorian house was Dr. King’s home until he was 12.
South Downtown
Once a bustling area near Terminal Station, one of two Atlanta train stations, South Downtown is being revitalized. Businesses already open include Spiller Park Coffee; Tyde Tate Kitchen; Atlanta Tech Village; and Crates, which sells used vinyl records. More openings are scheduled for 2026 including Delilah’s Everyday Soul, Bottle Rocket Sushi and El Tesoro.
