I am not typically a reader of “dog stories,” but when I saw this new book by one of my favorite Southern writers sitting on the library’s shelves I grabbed it and started reading before I even made it back to my desk. Bragg has a gift for capturing the people and in this case, the animals, that make up his family orbit with a distinct voice, dry humor, and true sense of loyalty. He is a real storyteller. And the story of this no good, beat up, worn out, can’t-be-tamed, wild and broken and beautiful creature (who may have just rolled in a dead carcass or donkey poop) provides many a tale to tell. But the real magic of this particular story between a man and his dog is the timing of the thing. Speck was a stray wandering and

Bragg at the time was dealing with a cancer diagnosis, the ravages of chemo, and recurring pneumonia. He too was injured, weak, and sick. The FulcoLibrary Volunteer Services team proudly works with 18 Friends of the Library groups across the county. Last year, 230 Friends served 13,484 hours running book drives, sales and stores, in addition to volunteering in the library. Volunteer-run bookstores are currently open at Alpharetta, Metropolitan, Milton, Palmetto, Roswell and Sandy Springs. Additional groups have honor system bookstores at Buckhead, East Atlanta, East Point, East Roswell, Northside and Ponce de Leon. Book donations in good condition are accepted at most locations with active Friends groups and all proceeds help pay for programs and supplies not covered in the library’s annual operating budget. Since 1984, the Friends of the Roswell Library have diligently supported their library and community. Their bookstore is open every day the library is open, they host regular book sales and manage a book shop at a local antique store. Top hours volunteer Carol Harrison leads a very diligent group of bookstore volunteers. Their Friends specialize in specific genres, so both donors and buyers keep coming back. They have built such a successful model that they have also formed a committee to determine how to best support libraries in the system without active Friends groups. This resulted in the generous donation of $500 to each of the thirteen libraries in need of fiscal support. Treasurer Louise Bullwinkel visited each branch and stated, “This has been an enlightening and enriching experience for me. I’ve seen what just a few can do with

I know how fortunate we are here in Roswell to provide as well as we do.” Each branch has $200 to spend on programs and supplies, plus a $300 credit with Baker and Taylor to purchase new books. Kirkwood is excited to purchase children’s books in French and Spanish, plus fund a program this summer. Mechanicsville ordered 50 sets of wired earbuds in small plastic carrying cases, craft paper for the book drop display board, door stoppers to keep doors open and small labels for labeling papers and magazines as reference use only. Washington Park will replace much needed crafts supplies. Many branches will enhance their summer reading efforts, replenish craft supplies and more. THANK YOU to Louise and all of the Friends
We are proud to share that for the third time, a library teen volunteer won District 5 Commissioner Marvin Arrington’s American History Teen Essay/Film Competition. The “My Unsung Hero Student Essay & Film Competition” was open to Fulton County high school students and they were invited to submit either a 1,500-word essay OR 10-minute short film highlighting an African American who has made a significant contribution to black progress and American History. Danielle Rhodes, who won the $500 prize, has served at the Central Library, with Outreach and with the Friends of the South Fulton Library. Danielle will be attending Florida A&M University this fall.

ONE BOOK, ONE READ Inaugural book club connects readers across Fulton County
The Fulton County Library System, in partnership with Auburn Avenue Research Library and the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library Foundation, are thrilled to announce the inaugural One Book, One Read program. One Book, One Read is a county-wide book club with the aim of getting as many people across Fulton County reading, talking about, and engaging with the same book at the same time. The goal is to promote critical conversations, community building, and literacy all while having fun with friends, family, and neighbors. The Library System’s first-ever book in the One Book, One Read program began in January with “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents” by Isabel Wilkerson. The book’s core resides in comparisons between the caste system in India, the

American race system, and the rise of the Third Reich in Germany. It also examines the current state of governance and influence over race and ethnicity. The 2022 One Book, One Read program is well underway with hundreds of participants throughout Fulton County engaging through book clubs and other organizations. Many of Fulton’s 34 libraries have hosted and will continue to host library branch book clubs around Caste. Interested residents can still sign up at local libraries to be a part of their book club. The event is free and those interested in attending can register. This culminating book club event will be a free lecture by the esteemed author of ‘Caste’, Isabel Wilkerson. This event is free, streaming online and open to the public.
Over 11,500 pages of digitized African American funeral programs from Atlanta and the Southeast are now freely available in the Digital Library of Georgia. The digital collection of 3,348 individual programs dates between 1886-2019 and contains contributions from the Auburn Avenue Research Library, the Wesley Chapel Genealogy Group and the Atlanta Chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society and was funded by Georgia HomePLACE, a program of the Georgia Public Library Service. “Funerals are such an important space for African Americans, said Auburn Avenue Research Library archivist and lead project contributor Derek Mosley. “The tradition of funerals is not reserved for the wealthy or privileged, but the community. It is that lasting document of someone’s life. In the program is the history and throughout this collection you see the evolution of the stories people left for future generations. I was amazed at the one pagers from the 1940’s, and by the 2000’s there was full color, multiple pages, and a ton of photographs highlighting the life and love shared by the families. This collection is public space for legacy.”
a photograph of the deceased, an obituary, a list of surviving relatives, and the order of service. Some programs provide more extensive genealogical information about the deceased, such as birth and death dates, maiden names, past residences, and place of burial. This data that can otherwise be hard to find, particularly for marginalized populations. The records of these communities were often either destroyed, kept in private hands, or never created in the first place. The Auburn Avenue Research Library began collecting funeral programs in 1994 with an initial donation by library staff. Since then, staff and the public have continued to add to the collection with a focus on the city of Atlanta. Although the materials have been physically open for research for decades, they can now be accessed beyond the library’s walls. In 2012, the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society Atlanta Chapter began its funeral program collection project in partnership with the Auburn Avenue Research Library and the Wesley Chapel Genealogy Group.

BEST BUY TEEN TECH CENTER - NOW OPEN
NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK - APRIL 4-8
The Best Buy Teen Tech Center’s (BBTTC) primary purpose is to expose teens to technology and help develop skill sets across the STEM spectrum. Through the assistance of The Clubhouse Network, each center uses an MIT Media Lab-influenced model of providing a space for teens to explore various technology such as computers, robots, cameras, music equipment, and sewing machines. In addition to equipment, the BBTTC provides young people with mentors who can guide them on becoming more proficient in STEM fields and beyond. These experiences are paramount in fueling the interest and creativity that will lead to the development of the minds and careers that will shape the future of these constantly evolving fields.
The Central Library will launch their new Clorox Pro Project for Public Spaces initiative on Monday, April 4th, as part of a weeklong National Library week celebration. During the kick-off the Library will feature storytelling, face-painting, magicians and more for patrons of all ages, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. the event will take place on the newly renovated Central Library plaza. CHILDREN’S BOOK FESTIVAL - MAY 14 Coming this May, the Fulton County Library System will hold a Children’s Book Festival at the newly renovated and recently re-opened Central Library in Downtown Atlanta. The special day of children’s literacy programming will take place Saturday, May 14th from 10 am – 4 pm and will feature special author programs, including live book readings, book signings and storytimes for all ages. In addition to the full day of activities for children and teens, participants participants will enjoy special performances from local artists, performers and more. WALTER MOSLEY Noted mystery author Walter Mosley breaks from his string of successful Easy Rawlins mysteries with this tale of an unlikely hero, Ptolemy Grey. 91 year old Ptolemy is a gentle soul slipping into dementia. Living by himself in a rough Los Angeles neighborhood, he is left further alone and bereft when his grandnephew and sometimes caretaker, Reggie, is killed in a drive-by shooting. At Reggie’s wake, Ptolemy meets Robyn, a young woman who befriends Ptolemy and becomes his advocate.
Their friendship helps Ptolemy find the strength for his final days. He wraps up loose ends and helps to create a future for Robyn. Character driven with subtle layers, this slender novel is a love song to friendship and a reminder that our family is not always related to us by blood. Originally written in 2010, this novel is now a drama series featuring Samuel L. Jackson. It’s a great selection for book clubs and anyone who loves a beautifully written novel. Readers will remember Ptolemy Grey for a long time.

Fulton County Library System couriers are logistics heroes and road warriors! Beginning at 6:30 am, Monday through Friday, seven couriers travel throughout Fulton County’s 70 mile radius to deliver and pick up library materials for 34 libraries. They battle heavy rains, winter storms, and summer heat to ensure patrons receive our most popular titles and other resources.
