Hello and here’s hoping spring has ushered in spectacular days and wonderful opportunities for everyone. You will most certainly have a lot of things to do in May, both personally and professionally. The Library System wants to be a part of your plans. So, since May is a busy month, please find time to visit your local library and get into the mix. From Mother’s Day to Memorial Day, all of us may find ourselves busier than usual in numerous ways. You may have celebrations that include graduations, weddings; and a myriad of reasons to get together with family and friends. Libraries have books on decorating, party and event planning ideas; and lots of cookbooks to assist you.
Please remember a few annual observances during the month. They include Older American’s Month; Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month; Jewish Heritage Month; National Arthritis Awareness Month; Get Caught Reading Month; National Women’s Health Week; and Cinco de
Mayo. Also, one big thing to look forward to is spending time at the Children’s Book Festival at the Central Library on Saturday, May 14th between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. There will be storytellers; read aloud programs; music; book signings; performances; appearances by local authors; and much more. Children, teens and adults are invited to come by and have some fun. All those activities are courtesy of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library Foundation and its partnership sponsors. We ask you to place all these events on your calendars. Put on some good walking shoes and make May 14th a special day for you and your family to come see the re-imagined Central Library and have fun. The fun will start on the plaza and take you to various floors of the renovated spaces. You will find the experience to be a glorious mix of revitalization, art, music, crafts; learning; listening and inspiration. And guess what? This chilling real-life story begins in 1917 during World War I. Katherine Schaub starts her first day at Radium Luminous Materials Corporation. Her task along with hundreds of other young women is to paint watch-dial numerals and hands using radium. Katherine is taught the technique of lip-pointing in which the women put the brushes into their mouths to achieve a fine point. Unfortunately, the brush is coated with radium. Years later, the women began to experience mysterious ailments: chronic fatigue, weight loss, anemia, mouth ulcers, and pain throughout their bodies. Then the women began to “die off alarmingly fast.” At the time, the doctors misdiagnosed their illnesses, but their former colleagues noted the deaths and the link back to their previous jobs. For Katherine and the other young ladies, it was a wonderful job to have until it was not. It allowed them to help their families and gave them financial freedom. It took a long hard fight for health and safety practices to change and for some of the families to receive financial compensation, but for the workers it was too little too late. o Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality by Michael J. Fox picks up where Fox’s two previous autobiographies, Always Looking Up: The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist and Lucky Man left off. Fox continues with his battle against Parkinson’s Disease and encounters some significant additional health problems that most people would consider extremely challenging. The crux of the book is two health crises he did not anticipatea spinal surgery to remove a tumor, and a bad fall that took months to recover from. Fox counts his family among his many blessings, and we
are given a window into the life he has created with Tracy Pollan, his four kids and his dog. His attitude about the trials of his life is admirable but he is human and there are times when he allows himself compassion and time to process some of the more difficult aspects of his life. Anyone else in Fox’s shoes may have lamented the unfairness of these things happening to someone relatively young who was already dealing with Parkinson’s Disease, but Fox is able to look back at the contributions he has made and find the silver lining in it all. In collaboration with the AtlantaFulton Public Library Foundation, the Fulton County Library System is pleased to announce a new Children’s Book Festival, sponsored by PNC Bank, and at the newly renovated Central Library in downtown Atlanta.

The Children’s Book Festival aims to engage young readers in all of the library’s resources, from infants to teens. The event, which will take place on Saturday, May 14th from 10 a.m.to 4 p.m., will host a variety of local organizations and well-known authors at the Central Library in downtown Atlanta.
In honor of AAPI Heritage Month, Central Library will host an art exhibit throughout the month of May in its first floor foyer featuring artwork commissioned by Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Atlanta in commemoration of the one year anniversary of the Atlanta spa shootings. This exhibit will include Nicole Kang Ahn’s three illustrations on the themes of remembrance, racial solidarity, and joy; Natalie Bui’s two illustrations on the themes of healing and community care; a print of “Resurfacing”, an original poem by Aanika Eragam, 2021 Atlanta Youth Poet Laureate; and a wishing tree featuring the collective hope of the community moving forward after the one year anniversary of the spa shootings. These pieces are original works commissioned for the Day of Remembrance on March 12, 2022.

T
he Central Library recently kicked off National Library Week (NLW) with a grantfunded initiative with CloroxPro and the Project for Public Spaces. On April 4th, on the plaza of the Central Library, a host of interactive play items brought programming beyond the walls of the library. The Central Library celebrated National Library Week with a

multigenerational focus on programming, including storytelling, a magician, music, games, and painting. The NLW programming continued with programs from Goodwill Industries, yoga, Sip and Paint, and literary bingo for seniors. A wonderful time was had by all and we look forward to many more enjoyable activities on the Central Library Plaza.

library volunteers
L
ibrary volunteers positively impact library service. You see them in the stacks shelving materials for other patrons to check out, Friends bookstores raising awareness and funds for library programs, meeting rooms leading programs teaching new skills. They are adults discovering their community, experts sharing their talents, retirees meeting new friends and teens completing service hours or creating advisory boards. They are all dedicated to helping the Library serve the public better. The pandemic closed library doors and eliminated volunteer placements for 15 months, but it strengthened our love of our volunteers. Volunteer support never waned, but the safety of our treasured volunteers was always our priority. Their patience and support were appreciated as we navigated unchartered territory. National Volunteer Appreciation Week has been officially cele-
brated around the United States since 1974 and this year we celebrated the 1,273 volunteers who served over 37,546 hours at our libraries in 2020-2021. Volunteers were highlighted at branches, on social media and at an in-person ceremony at the Central Library. Special awards were given to Adult Volunteer of the Year Rose Mason from the Wolf Creek Library for leading a monthly book club and Youth Volunteer of the Year Ananya Kartik from the Milton Library for bringing her energy and enthusiasm to her time at the library. Volunteers and staff nominated a staff member of the year for their effective work with volunteers and this year’s committee of area volunteer managers agreed to award both Patricia Marion and Karin Hartzell for their amazing attitudes, attention to detail and work with community based learning volunteers at the Milton Library. 375 volunteers provided

programs ranging from financial literacy and tax preparations to storytimes, line dancing and yoga. Additional awards included 15 Star volunteers nominated by staff, six President’s Volunteer Service Awards for youth volunteers serving 25-62 hours and four volunteers reaching 1,000 lifetime hours. Friends members celebrated amazing achievements including 30 years of library volunteer service for Sandy Springs Friends Barbara Barnett and Naomi Harper, Roswell Friend Nancy Puckett and Alpharetta Friends Ben and Linda Statham. Friends of the Roswell Library Treasurer Louise Bullwinkel earned a Presi-
AARP and IRS VITA volunteers provided tax preparation and stress relief to patrons at seven libraries this year (Cascade, East Roswell, Milton, Ocee, Roswell, Sandy Springs and South Fulton). Thank you to the 400+ tax aide volunteers who have donated more than 61,000 hours since 1994. We look forward to seeing them again in February 2023! dent’s Volunteer Service Lifetime Achievement Award for serving over 4,000 hours in the past 10 years. Top Hours volunteers included Friend of Alpharetta Ben Statham with 2,302 hours, plus Roswell Friends Carol Harrison with 1,945 hours and Bonnie Miller with 1,463 hours as they coordinated, collected and sorted donated books throughout the closures. Volunteers support staff members, share new resources with patrons and advocate to keep libraries active. Over 108 volunteers celebrated 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 years with the Library volunteer program and over 132 volunteers served over 50 hours of their time last year. We value and treasure all of our 514 new and our 759 returning volunteers. We are fortunate to work side by side and learn from these amazing community volunteers.
