The hot days of summer should be coming to a halt. But, as you know, the nation is experiencing a heat wave. That is why the Library’s 2022 Summer Reading Program’s theme, “Oceans of Possibilities” has at least allowed us to dream of cool waters. Hopefully, however, you made it to a beach. I finally did so and loved every moment of it! Now, we look forward to picking up where some of us left off with kids returning to schools and colleges; vacations winding down; and fall looming on the horizon. Sweater weather and football will soon be upon us. August will still have hot days; and September will find us observing National Library Card Sign Up Month. I was first appointed by former Commissioner Nancy Boxill who thought that the Library Board would be a good opportunity to help serve the community and District. I have been reappointed by Commissioners Joan Garner and Marvin Arrington Jr. Libraries provide access to critical research services and technology tools that aren’t as readily available to everyone in our communities. Libraries are safe learning spaces that provide the tools, services and programming for all ages, and social demographics. Libraries can be a great equalizer. Working with the Library Board has been a rewarding experience.

ince 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, libraries across the country unite in a national effort to ensure every child signs-up for their own library card.

Throughout the school year, public librarians and library staff will assist parents and caregivers with saving hundreds of dollars on educational resources and services for students. From free access to STEAM programs/activities, educational apps, in-person and virtual homework help to the expertise of librarians, a library card is one of the most cost-effective back-to-school supplies available. Central Artist Corner Spotlight

Marcus E. Bishop is a native of Mississippi and currently resides in Atlanta, Ga. He received his BFA in painting from Jackson State University in 1999, a BFA in Fashion Design and Marketing from American InterContinental University in 2001, and a Masters of Fine Arts from SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) in 2013. For eight years he worked as a kindergarten educator for Atlanta Public Schools, and three years as a Middle School Visual Arts teacher for DeKalb County Schools. Before the Pandemic (Covid 19), Bishop worked as an Art Instructor for Fulton County Arts & Culture.

This year’s theme is “Books Unite Us. Censorship Divides Us.” Books bridge gaps and build experiences between readers. Censorship, creates barriers and division. The books we feature during Banned Books Week have all been challenged for removal or restriction in libraries and schools. Banned Books Week focuses on the harms of censorship.

90 YEARS YOUNG: SELECTIONS FROM THE ANDREW J. YOUNG COLLECTION

Andrew J. Young Archival Exhibition – Second Floor Gallery Monday, August 01, 2022 - Sunday, December The Auburn Avenue Research Library celebrates the 90th birthday of Ambassador Andrew Young with a selection of photographs and ephemera from his personal collection. Donated to the Library in the early 2000s, the collection documents his career and family life spanning more than 70 years. The collection contains correspondence, speeches, press releases, calendars, books, minutes, reports, publications, articles, photographs, scrapbooks, artifacts, textiles, trophies and awards, artwork, posters, programs, campaign memorabilia, manuscripts, travel documents, notes, sermons, ephemera, and audio-visual material. Andrew Jackson Young was born in New Orleans on March 12, 1932. After graduating from Howard University in 1951 with a degree in Biology, Young chose to become a minister. He attended Hartford Theological Seminary and was

ordained in the United Church of Christ in 1955. Starting as a minister in the 1950s, he joined the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1961, and eventually became a close assistant to Martin Luther King, Jr. From 19701972 he was the Chair of the Atlanta Community Relations Commission, and in 1972 he was elected to Congress. Young served as mayor of Atlanta from 1981-1989. After serving his two terms as mayor, Young ran for Governor of Georgia in 1990 but was defeated by Zell Miller. Young was the Co-Chair for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games and worked at Law Companies Group, Inc. In 1994, President Bill Clinton appointed him chairman of the Southern Africa Enterprise Development Fund. With Ambassador Carlton A. Masters, Young co-founded GoodWorks International in 1997.

ntonia Vega has recently retired from her job teaching English at the local college. She and her devoted husband, Sam, were ready to start the next phase of their lives. What they did not plan on was Sam having an aneurysm while on his way to meet her for a celebratory dinner. The loss is almost too much for Antonia and she begins to withdraw from the world. Unfortunately (or fortunately), Antonia’s carefully laid plans to quietly live out the rest of her life are interrupted when she is reluctantly drawn into the troubles of an undocumented couple from Mexico. Add into the mix the recent disappearance of her sister whose behavior has become increasingly erratic. Antonia is not ready for the demands of the world, but she may not have a choice if she wants to remain true to herself. This is a sharp and compact novel that gently nudges the reader to reflect on their own choices if faced with similar circumstances.
