TEEN TECH WEEK 2017 Teen Tech Week began in 2007 and is a national initiative sponsored by YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association). The week-long celebration is aimed at teens, their parents, educators and other concerned adults. The purpose of Teen Tech Week is to ensure that teens are competent and ethical users of digital media, especially the non-print resources offered through libraries, such as e-books, e-readers, databases, audiobooks, and social media. Celebrate with the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System, at one of our 34 branches, the week of March 5–11, 2017 with the Teen Tech Week theme: “Be the Source of Change.” Additional information about Teen Tech Week can be found at the following link: http://teentechweek.ning.com and we encourage young adults throughout Fulton County to join us for one of the programs listed below.

LETTER FROM THE

DIRECTOR We’ve been talking a lot about the future of the library. Most of our discussions, and most of our thinking up to this point, has been linear. That worries me. Certainly, libraries will survive in some form or fashion into the future, but I want libraries to thrive. To do that, we have to stop thinking that A leads to be, and B to C ad infinitum. It may seem counterintuitive, but I don’t see a clear path ahead for libraries – and that doesn’t worry me. It excites me. It means the future of the library can be much more Dr. Strange than Dr. Seuss. As the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System works through its strategic planning process I’ve been reading Bruce Lee’s book, Artist of Life, for inspiration. It may seem like an odd choice. How can a book about martial arts, written by an actor, help plan the future of AFPLS … or any library? The answer is gung fu. Gung fu is the ancient Chinese art of finding harmony with, not against, one’s opponent. (In library terms, patrons would be considered opponents.) Bruce Lee dedicated his life to understanding and mastering the techniques of gung fu. He says, “…the idea is to ‘fit’ harmoniously your movement into that of the opponent.” That essence perfectly summarizes how the library needs to position itself. We have to let go of our own goals and objectives, and instead fit ourselves into our patrons’ goals and objectives—that is the true future of the library.

Dirt and Deeds in Mississippi Film Screening Saturday, April 22. 3:00 p.m. In recognition of Earth Day (2017), we will host a screening of Dirt and Deeds in Mississippi. This extraordinary film reveals the captivating story of a Delta community called Mileston, in which sharecropping families gained control of 10,000 acres of some of the best land in the state as a result of a radical New Deal era experiment in the 1930’s; and as landowners, became instrumental leaders in the Civil Rights Movement.

This community event will feature original poetry and spoken word performances. Black Films Matter Film Festival Friday, May 19–Sunday, May 21. In celebration of the longstanding magic of Black Cinema, Auburn Avenue Research Library, in collaboration with Atlanta Film Society presents the BLACK MOVIES MATTER Film Series. A collection of feature films, short film blocks and panels, Black Movies Matter serves to reframe the concept of classics, stimulate discussion, and honor the collective power of Black stories and Black storytellers.

WHAT WE ARE READING: Central Library/Headquarters Edition

In the spirit of the “New Year” and kicking of 2017 with your resolution to read more books and less social media, we want you to have a few recommendations from the “What to Read” experts. Your Central Library Librarians and Support Staff have put together a list of must-reads to get your year started off right! Check out a few book recommendations from members of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System’s Central Library/Headquarters Staff Members.

Recommendation: “The Professor and the Madman” by Simon Winchester Danny Mehta, Special Collections Librarian at Central Library Simon Winchester’s The Professor and the Madman is the true story of, well, a professor—Dr. James Murray—and (ostensibly) a madman—Dr. William C. Minor—and the mammoth enterprise of making the very first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). A real thriller, yes? Well, you’re exactly right! The history of what we now call “the definitive record of the English language” is a rather cracked drama: there’s murder (blood is spilled by page four!) and mutilation, despair and redemption, and perhaps most importantly, mystifying genius and profound psychosis. Check this book out TODAY!

Recommendation: “The Total Money Makeover” by Dave Ramsey Rachel Daniels, Public Affairs Officer I am currently reading The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey. Like most Americans, as I’ve gotten older, I have become more and more obsessed with becoming debt free and paying back those pesky student loans. Google searches led me to this modern day financial guru. Dave Ramsey’s step-by-step guide on how to become debt free is an intense financial workout mirrored after his own experience with filing for bankruptcy, losing it all and turning it around to become a multi-millionaire. An easy read that was written to speak to the average person no matter the educational status. Grab your copy of the Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey at your local library.

Recommendation: “They Thought They Were Free: The Germans, 1933–45” by Milton Mayer John Wright, Librarian, Special Collections I am currently reading They Thought They Were Free. Originally published in 1955, the book examines the gradual habituation of the German people to being governed by surprise, to receiving decisions deliberated in secret, and to believing that situations were so complicated that only leaders could act on information the people did not have access to or were told they could not understand. It is a chilling tale of how people first become complaisant, then are swept along by events and fear. Was it a unique occurrence or do you see parallels where you live or work?

Recommendation: “Cara’s Kindness” by Kristi Yamaguchi, Illustrated by John Lee Floyd Council, Central Library Administrator In this post-election year, we could all use a simple focus on the art of “kindness.” In this simple picture book, I am able to relate to Cara the Cat’s chain of kindness from herself to Darby the Dog, to Pax the Polar Bear, to Mark the Monkey, to Samantha the Skunk, to Milo the Mole, and finally back to herself. “Caring and passing on small acts of kindness, one good deed at a time really does come full circle in this little book, and in life.” Highly recommended for children and for adults to read to children. 8

DECADE OF ART at Central

The Central Library Art Gallery Coordinator has retired after eleven years of coordinating art exhibitions. Chera Baugh has been instrumental in bridging the Atlanta art community with the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System. Ms. Baugh has thoroughly enjoyed working with the former Downtown First Thursday Atlanta ArtWalk Committee and other community groups like the Women’s Caucus for Art of Georgia, African-Americans for the Arts, Women in Focus, Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), Atlanta Artists Center, Atlanta Celebrates Photography, Sistagraphy, and many other individual artists and groups.
