As we prepare for the upcoming

renovations, which will begin at some libraries this fall, we have been having conversations about how our libraries will change as technology allows us to explore new service models. Some folks are worried that technology will replace the human touch at the library. I’ve been thinking about that, and how we might meld the two things – technology and the human touch - together to create a world class library experience for all our users.

T

he Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System is engaged in a comprehensive capital improvement program that will entail the renovation of 22 libraries during the next three years. Projects at every library in the system will include new carpet, new paint, new furniture and new technology, among other infrastructure improvements like roofs and HVAC.

It’s an exciting time for library users as we embark on this large scale modernization effort. Not only is it an opportunity for AFPLS to upgrade the physical buildings, but it is also an opportunity to make a technological leap forward in the number and types of services we

Last week, I came across a book that caught my attention. It was a juvenile book called Robotics Basics. It was written by Karen Liptak. It caught my attention because it was written in 1984 – 33 years ago. I opened to the first page of the book and read this: “The robots have arrived!... Drawing boards all over the globe are filled with exciting plans for advanced technology robots and ‘robot families’ capable of someday making life richer and easier for everyone alive: a Golden Age of Earth and beyond.” As we move forward, let’s work together to ensure our libraries fulfill that promise of a Golden Age of Earth. Library Foundation Supports Books for Babies Atlanta-Fulton Public Library Youth Outreach Librarian, Christina Rand, took the Books for Babies Program, which is funded through the AtlantaFulton Public Library Foundation, to the Families First Baby Basics Shower program this spring. Christina met with new parents who were participating in a baby wellness and essentials program that included a presentation on the importance of reading to babies daily. There were 105 baskets of baby essentials handed out to parents, which included books in English or Spanish for reading to babies. The Books for Babies material also included recommendations for baby songs, books and rhymes as well as library card applications and information on free library resources. The Atlanta-Fulton Public Library Foundation is proud to make this great literacy program available. Library Renovation Project Update You will soon see these signs popping up around the County, as work begins on Group 1 of the Library Renovation Project. Exterior construction work to the seven libraries included in Group 1 is now underway at the Sandy Springs, Dogwood, Southwest, Roswell, Kirkwood, Washington Park and West End libraries. This work will take place through August 2018 and will include roof repairs, pressure washing, gutters, exterior paint, brick repairs, and fencing. Plans were recently unveiled for the Central Library/System HQ, East Point Library and Fairburn Library. Plans for each of those projects are available on the renovation project website. Group 1 libraries are expected to close August 2018 in order to complete the interior renovations Renovations are expected to take 4-9 months, depending on the library.
