Fulton County residents checked out three million books in 2018, and more than 10 million people used our services. Those are healthy figures for a library system in the midst of renovating 24 of its 34 libraries.

What I would really like to know is this: what impact did the library have on the lives of those 10 million visitors? I’m not talking about the collective, overarching impact of the library. I’m talking about the specific affect the library had on each individual who interacted with Fulton County Library System. How were their individual lives improved by what they read at the library, or by what they learned at the library, or even by how they were treated at the library? Those things might be a better measure of the intrinsic value of the library.

Or how access to the internet at a library helped an individual reconnect with an estranged family member after 30 years. Or how a kind word from librarian stopped someone from doing something drastic. Those are the library’s real outcomes.

Leaping to Volunteer by Julia Ratledge and Heather Staniszewski Two days a week dedicated students from Eaton Academy come to the Milton Library to give back to the community by shaping up the shelves and shelving materials. The collaboration started in 2016 between Eaton Academy instructor Richie Tannebaum and Todd Williamson, who was a librarian at Roswell and now the Branch Manager at Milton, as a way for students to learn more about the library and to strengthen organization skills through volunteering at the Roswell Library. Eaton Academy was incorporated in 1995 and designs education solutions to meet 130-150 students’ individual needs and personal learning styles. Students help staff to dress the shelves, otherwise known as straightening them so that they are flush with the edge, standing upright and in perfect order. The volunteers moved from Roswell to Milton during the renovation process, so they could keep supporting the ibrary’s work. Eaton Academy teacher Dawn Gray stated, “The Milton and Roswell Libraries are very calming places for Eaton Academy LEAP volunteers. Staff always make them feel welcome; the students love coming here. The students have special needs and are able to learn and grow by shelving books, shelf reading and ‘dressing the shelves’. Volunteers are able to go at their own pace and appreciate the opportunity to help out.

Program themed Libraries Rock. Library Support Supervisor Julia Ratledge has led volunteer shifts and programs with the students at both Roswell and Milton. She said, “This is a mutually beneficial program because they learn from us and we learn from them. Their smiling faces and enthusiasm makes our day better. To know we can helpserve in the role to help them grow after high school is really neat.” Eaton Academy students balance attending classes for 180 days and volunteering once a week at the library. These students joined a volunteer team of over 2,000 community members who supported our 34 locations in 2018, and several volunteers are also proud patrons. Gray stated, “Some of the students and instructors check out materials. They always have a good time at the library.” Volunteers will be recognized during April for National Volunteer Appreciation Week.

Slavery by Another Name Film Screening Saturday, February 9. 3:00 p.m. In Observance of the National Black History Month Theme: “The Great Migration” the Auburn Avenue Research Library will host a screening of the documentary: “Slavery by Another Name”. This film, based on Douglas A. Blackmon’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book, challenges one of Americans’ most cherished assumptions: the belief that slavery in this country ended with the Emancipation Proclamation. The film tells how even as chattel slavery came to an end in the South in 1865, thousands of African Americans were pulled back into forced labor with shocking force and brutality. It was a system in which men, often guilty of no crime at all, were arrested, compelled to work without pay, repeatedly bought and sold, and coerced to do the bidding of masters. Tolerated by both the North and South, forced labor lasted well into the 20th century.

The Lost Education of Horace Tate Public Lecture and Book Signing Sunday, February 10. 3:00 p.m. The Auburn Avenue Research Library, in collaboration with the Baton Foundation Inc., will host “The Lost Education of Horace Tate”. This monumental work offers fresh insight into the southern struggle for human rights, revealing little-known accounts of leaders such as W.E.B. Du Bois and James Weldon Johnson, as well as hidden provocateurs like Horace Tate. The Sounds of Blackness in Classical Music Exploring the African Diaspora via Classical Music with Guitarist Ciyadh Wells Live Musical Performance /Community Lecture Wednesday, February 13. 6:30 P.M. The Auburn Avenue Research Library will host musician and classical guitarist Ciyadh Wells, as she performs a music suite featuring pieces composed by musicians of African descent. This live performance will explore the intersection between classical music, visual art, and the African diaspora with musical pieces from composers such as Haitian composer Frantz Casseus, Florence Price (the first African-American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer), and Cuban composer and conductor Tania León. Bound in Wedlock: Slave and Free Black Marriage in the Nineteenth Century Public Lecture and Book Signing Sunday, February 24. 3:00p.m. The Auburn Avenue Research Library, in collaboration with the Baton Foundation Inc., will host Princeton University’s Dr. Tera W. Hunter, who will discuss her latest publication, “Bound in Wedlock: Slave and Free Black Marriage in the Nineteenth Century”. The first comprehensive history of African American marriage, Dr. Hunter reveals the practical ways Black couples adopted, adapted, or rejected European Christian concepts of marriage, creatively setting their own standards for matrimonial relationships under conditions of enslavement and segregation. Celebration of American Girls, Addy Walker and Melody Ellison - Tea Party with a Purpose Saturday, March 9. 1:00 p.m. In Observance of Women’s History Month, and in the spirit of American Girls, Addy Walker, a brave Civil War-era Black girl determined to be gain her freedom; and Melody, an optimistic Black girl growing up in the 1960s who wants to lift her voice with others and stand up for what's right, the Auburn Avenue Research Library will host “Celebration of American Girls: Youth Craft and Tea Party with a Purpose”. We Want to Do More Than Survive: Abolitionist Teaching and the Pursuit of Educational Freedom Public Lecture and Book Signing Saturday, March 23. 3:00 p.m. The Auburn Avenue Research Library, in collaboration with Charis Books and More, will host award-winning author and Associate Professor of Educational Theory & Practice at the University of Georgia, Dr. Bettina Love, who will discuss her latest publication “We Want to Do More Than Survive: Abolitionist Teaching and the Pursuit of Educational Freedom”. on her life’s work of teaching and researching in urban schools, Dr. Love persuasively argues that educators must teach students about racial violence, oppression, and how to make sustainable change in their communities through radical civic initiatives and movements. Black Queer Southern Public Lecture and Book Signing Sunday, March 24. 3:00 p.m. The Auburn Avenue Research Library will host Dr. E. Patrick Johnson, the Carlos Montezuma Professor of Performance Studies and African American Studies at Northwestern University, who will discuss his latest publication, “Black. Queer. Southern. Women. An Oral History”. Drawn from the life narratives of more than seventy African American queer women who were born, raised, and continue to reside in the American South, this book powerfully reveals the way these women experience and express racial, sexual, gender, and class identities--all linked by a place where such identities have generally placed them on the margins of society. Using methods of oral history and performance ethnography, Dr. Johnson's work vividly enriches the historical record of racialized sexual minorities in the South and brings to light the realities of the region's thriving black lesbian communities.

Free Instructional Safe Driving Class Saturday, March 30. 10:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. The Malcolm Omari Hill Scholarship Fund, Inc. provides free instructional safe driving classes for teens and young adults, ages 16-25. We utilize an instructor, interactive audio, video and printed material to engage the student and teach the laws, regulations and information which cover the very important privilege of driving (not a behindthe-wheel class). A certificate is granted upon completion of the class. This certificate is to be used for "insurance purposes" only. Registration is required, seating is limited.
