Library Foundation Promotes Early Childhood Literacy The Atlanta-Fulton Public Library Foundation believes that one of the greatest advantages we can give our young children is the early development of language skills. Did you know... - Children who are read to at least three times a week by a family member are almost twice as likely to score in the top 25% of learners as compared to children who are read to less than 3 times a week. - By age 2, children who are read to regularly display greater language comprehension, larger vocabularies, and higher cognitive skills than their peers. - By age 2 a child’s brain is as active as an adult’s and by ages 3-10, a child’s brain is more than twice as active as an adult’s. - By age 3, a child’s brain has reached 80% of its adult size. http://www.ferstfoundation.org/resources/ fifty-top-literacy-statistics

Books for Babies is a library program

designed to educate parents about the importance of reading to, and talking with, their babies every day. Parents participate in a baby story time to learn developmental tips and see librarians demonstrate best practices when reading with babies. Parents are given a bag of resources including a library card application, a board books, reading tips, and book suggestions. The program reaches out to schools, hospitals, parenting classes and other community organizations. This documentary film explores the relevant issue and what forms women’s ideas and decisions about wearing natural hair. It features interviews, and offers perspectives of Black women and men in diverse regions of the world including: Equatorial Guinea, Spain, Uruguay, Cuba, and the United States, creating a bridge between Africa and its Diaspora by identifying and increasing the understanding of a common problem that negatively impacts Africans and people of African descent. This powerful film brings you face to face with men and women who have endured incarceration at Rikers Island. All ages. Library After Dark: Movie Night for Adults @ Wolf Creek Friday, March 9. 6:00 p.m. Join us for movies on the big screen. Bring your movie snacks and a friend! We are staying open late for this special night of free films. Adults only. Safe Diving Class for Teens and Young Adults Saturday, March 31. 10:00 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. The Malcolm Omari Hill Scholarship Fund, Inc. provides free instructional safe driving classes for teens and young adults. These are instructional classes only; we do not provide a behind-the-wheel driving experience. We utilize an instructor, interactive audio, video and printed material to engage the students and teach the laws, regulations and information which cover the very important privilege of driving.
