Garland and Price Hays know a thing or two about houses. As a homebuilder, Price
has constructed and renovated countless residences, including several for his own family over the years. It’s no wonder, then, that they recognized “good bones” in this Kirby Woods house when a friend showed it to them in 2023. It’s also not surprising that they bought the home and moved in in November of that year with plans to refurbish it over time. The timeline changed drastically, however, when snow and ice blanketed the Mid South only three months later. “The pipes froze and burst and flooded the whole house,” Garland recalls. “We had to move out for almost a year. It was not fun.” Not fun, indeed, but a blessing in disguise. Having to make repairs presented a unique opportunity to do more, accentuating the features that had drawn the couple to the house originally while completely revamping other areas.
The Hayses employed the same philosophy for their new home’s decor: keep what’s great and mix in new. They brought no shortage of furnishings and accessories to be kept. Garland’s father, the late Gil Humphrey, was an award-winning designer whose work was respected around the Mid South and beyond for decades. She developed her own love of design growing up in a home filled with beautiful things and while working for the family business. Treasures passed down blend seamlessly with items the Hayses have collected. New acquisitions, many from Sanctuary Antiques in Corinth, MS, Garland’s favorite shop, complete the decor. Luckily,
the water damage was minimal in the two front rooms, leaving the dining room and handsome paneled study largely intact. The floors had to be replaced, as in the rest of the home, and Garland updated the lighting in both rooms. She also couldn’t resist adding Thibaut’s Villa Garden wallpaper in the dining room. The mural design on grasscloth adds sophisticated pattern and texture to the room’s lovely antiques, including a set of chairs inlaid with the initials GH that her parents found years ago in England. A classic brass ring chandelier from Visual Comfort crowns the room with understated elegance. Garland sourced the fixture, as well as the rest of the home’s new lighting, from Graham’s in Memphis. Just between the dining room and kitchen, a brand-new butler’s pantry illustrates beautifully how a small space can have a big impact. Bathed in vibrant Hague Blue from Farrow & Ball, the nook provides storage along with a wow factor. “I felt like this was a little jewel box of a space,” Garland says, noting the splurge-worthy custom monogrammed brass pulls on the built-ins and the Visual Comfort Lloyd jeweled light fixture overhead that brings to mind a handful of diamonds. The pantry is part of the major renovation that took place in the kitchen and adjacent areas. Price reworked the floor plan and incorporated a carport to include an updated kitchen, laundry room, home office, powder room and a mud room in the style of one typically found in an English country home. Cheerful and traditional, the new kitchen feels open and airy while still having abundant storage space. Per Price’s suggestion, the back wall has only base cabinets, perfectly showing off crisp white paneling as well as pieces from Garland’s beloved collection of blue and white porcelain. Perimeter cabinets, also in white, feature brass hardware that echoes the trim on the custom stainless steel vent hood. Countertops and backsplashes are Vermont marble. The Hayses decided to go in a different direction, one that blends seamlessly, however, for the kitchen’s center island. Bathed in an understated bluish gray, the structure is topped with walnut that adds rich warmth to the space.

removing a wall and a wet bar Price made room for an informal dining area between the kitchen and family room. Garland was thrilled that an antique table that didn’t fit in the house prior to the renovation came out of storage to take its rightful place in the new spot. The farm-style table surrounded by Parsons chairs upholstered in casual blue solids and stripes makes an inviting place for the family to gather for meals. The relaxed elegance continues into the family room, as does the blue-and-white motif. A pair of wing chairs in a handsome houndstooth, twin cube ottomans in ticking, and a spindle armchair with cushions in a mini geometric print set the tone. Blue chinoiserie accents fill the room, interspersed tastefully with books and art. The natural brick fireplace surround and oriental rug bring in corals and rusts that balance out the palette. A sunroom behind the den is part of the “good bones” that sold the couple on the house. Originally a porch, the room had been enclosed by a previous owner from North Carolina who wanted a bit of a mountain home feel in the Mid South. Reclaimed pine beams frame a wall of oversized cypress windows, with antique wide-plank pine floors. The Hayses gave the sunroom an added measure of charm by painting its brick walls white, adding a tongue-andgroove ceiling, and enlarging the cased openings that lead in from the family room. Here, as she likes to do throughout her home, Garland mixed casual pieces like a vintage pine trunk and side table with a touch of formality, here in the form of four mahogany Chippendale dining chairs.

"This
is my happy room,” Garland says, and the reason is apparent. With its easy ambiance and full view of the parklike backyard, the sunroom lends itself to quiet morning coffee, relaxed conversation or a fun game night. Light aqua walls play a big part in the tranquil feel of the primary bedroom. Garland loves the tried-and-true shade. “I’ve done this color in our bedroom for I don’t know how many houses because it’s just peaceful. It’s like water,” she says. Drapes over the room’s newly enlarged window and a Roman shade on a multi-lite door are reprised from their most recent former home: in fact, most of the furnishings here have been with the family for some time. The headboard is a clever marriage of two antique footboards Garland’s parents acquired in England years ago, and the original Veda Reed painting above the bed is a longtime favorite. “It was over my bed when I was little,” says Garland, “so I’ve moved that with me my whole life.” White oak cabinetry brings a warm neutrality to the adjoining bathroom. The Hayses had used the same wood in their son’s bathroom previously and loved its natural feel. White marble counters and tub surround keep the mood from going too casual, while Visual Comfort’s Talia chandelier over the tub creates the ideal scenario for a bubble bath. Garland’s love for blue and white was instilled by her mother. “Our kitchen always had blue and white, and she always had Blue Willow pieces,” she recalls. It makes sense, then, that the suite in which her mom is often a guest reflects that love to the fullest. The bed linens, lamps and art speak quietly to the theme, but the bathroom shouts it. Papered in Thibaut Daintree, a large-scale botanical print, and punched up with a faux bamboo pagoda mirror, the space is an homage to all things blue, white and Eastern. Even the Hayses’ son, a young teenager at the time they bought the home,
recognized its good bones right away. Garland remembers, “When we looked at the house, he came upstairs before we did, and he was like, ‘I think we should buy it.’ I couldn’t believe it. He’d never said he cared about anything about a house. And then we came up here and were like, ‘Okay, we see what he’s talking about!’” The large second-floor living room features more of the North Carolina influence, added by the former homeowner and improved by the current ones. Exposed beams, a welcoming fireplace, a game nook with heart pine paneling, and a pair of built-in trundle beds create a space with timeless character that’s just right for a young man to hang out with friends and will stay just right as he grows. Although the upstairs already had a bathroom and a smaller bedroom, Price converted attic space into a larger bedroom with a walk-in closet for his son, bringing the home’s total number of bedrooms to four. “We’re always thinking about who might next call this house home,” says Garland. Because as great as the Hayses have made this place, who knows when another good-boned house may come their way, just waiting to be made better. September 2026 • athomemms.com | 37

Visitors can browse emerging retail shops, sample rotating food vendors like Chula’s Food Truck, and celebrate the community. Keep an eye out for Brown and Covington, Ripley Main Street’s newest creative entrepreneurship center. Housed in a long vacant historic building downtown, the space is being converted into a curated marketplace where six local artisans can grow their businesses and reach a broader audience. Visitors can browse handcrafted goods, watch makers at work in dedicated studio space, and take part in handson workshops led by the artists themselves. A gelato bar rounds out the experience. Stop in for a scoop, or purchase one of the handmade pottery bowls crafted by a featured artisan and bring it back on your next visit for complimentary gelato.
STEPPING INTO THE STORY Ripley has a literary legacy that runs deeper than most expect. William Faulkner ’s family traces its roots to Tippah County, where his great grandfather, Colonel William Clark Faulkner, became one of North Mississippi’s most influential figures. Visitors can trace this history across several stops in town. The Historic Square marks the spot where Colonel Faulkner was fatally shot in 1889, while the Tippah County Historical Museum and Ripley Public Library preserve artifacts and photographs connected to the Faulkner family. Blues Alley transforms what was once an underused downtown passageway into one of North Mississippi’s most vibrant public spaces. String lights stretch overhead while colorful murals, guitar installations, and inviting seating create an outdoor gallery dedicated to the rich tradition of Mississippi Hill Country Blues. The murals celebrate influential artists including R.L. Burnside, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Otha Turner and T-Model Ford, while the space itself honors an area that historically served as a gathering place for Ripley’s African American community. The rhythm doesn’t stop there. The annual Burnside Music Fest brings free, all-ages performances to the Blues Alley stage each June. Past performers include Grammy Award-winning Cedric Burnside, R.L.’s grandson, keeping the Hill Country Blues tradition alive for a new generation.
AMERICA’S OLDEST TRADE DAY Two miles south of downtown off Highway 15, one of the South’s most beloved traditions comes to life every month. First Monday Trade Day has been drawing crowds to Ripley since 1893. Farmers once arrived with livestock, produce and tools, ready to barter, after local merchants declared a recurring Grand Bargain Day. Today, First Monday spans more than 50 acres and brings together hundreds of vendors each Saturday and Sunday before the first Monday of each month. Antiques and vintage finds share space with handcrafted goods, farm equipment, fresh produce and Southern food stalls. Whether visitors are seasoned treasure hunters or exploring for the first time, First Monday rewards everyone who shows up. Two years ago, my sister June

I di d no t have a ny thi n g financially to gain f rom ca ri ng for he r o r be i ng named POA , which gave me a po si ti o n o f objectivity and balance . T he h e a l thca re POA was ex tremely hel pf ul as i t gave m e access to her health po rta l and do c to rs’ notes. It gave me the power to a s k que sti o ns o n her behalf and seek cl a ri ty, w hi c h I d i d re gular ly. I would then dis cus s my unde rsta n ding and the notes with her a nd a sk he r questions like, “ What do yo u un de rsta nd thi s to mean? ”, “How do you wa nt to pro c e e d? ”, or “Do you have questions ? ” I t wa s i m po rta nt and I believe necessar y to hono r my si ster ’s ability to know what wa s be st fo r he r a nd to respect her decisio ns . H e r a uto no my was f irst and foremost to be prote c te d. At ti mes, I would have liked to do t hi n gs di ffe re ntl y, she made the decisions a nd my ro l e wa s to suppor t and love her in tho s e decisions. M y si ste r di d not beat the cancer. T he pa st t wo ye a rs i nvolved a few changes to the pro to co l s to sl ow the progression, but i n the e n d the ca nc e r was more ag gressive than the treatment.

This summer, Trezevant welcomed local first responders, residents and community leaders during its annual First Responders Appreciation Day. This special event recognizes the dedicated men and women who help ensure the safety and well-being of the senior living community year-round. The gathering brought together officers from the Memphis Police Department’s Tillman Precinct and Bike Patrol Unit, firefighters from Memphis Fire Department Station 17, representatives from MPLOY/Memphis Office of Youth Services, City of Memphis Mayor Paul Young and Trezevant’s own security team. Guests were honored for their commitment to serving and protecting residents and the greater Memphis community. Held in Hope’s Garden on the Trezevant campus, the morning featured breakfast, fellowship and opportunities for residents to personally thank the first responders who regularly answer calls and provide assistance when needed. 74 | At Home Memphis & Mid South • September 2026
Reverend Barbara Kirk-Norris led a special blessing of the badges and offered prayers for the safety, strength and continued service of first responders.
