AsI enter the Thanksgiving season, this photo reminds me of one of my biggest blessings besides my faith and friends. Trip and I are so blessed in so many ways, and the people in this picture are our hearts.

Wishing all of you a safe and happy Thanksgiving and all the gratitude your heart can hold. They say the heart that gives thanks is a happy one, for you can not feel thankful and unhappy at the same time.

DESIGN BY TENSE DESIGN CO | STORY BY TERRI GLAZER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BLAKE MCCOLLUM

Thehouse had been on the Tupelo real estate market 14 years and sitting empty for the past two. Built in the 1980s, the contemporary home had been modified by its most recent owners and bore little resemblance to its original aesthetic. “Essentially, they’d tried to make it something it wasn’t,” says owner Ty Garner. “They wanted it to be more traditional so they added arches, big furniture, heavy drapes and valances, and the whole house was pink.”

But Garner had a vision: “My goal was to take it back to its original glory, but with a modern-day twist. I wanted it to be clean, sleek, but still feel warm.”

Heshowed the place to a few clients of his firm, Tense Design Co., trying to convince them that he knew how great the house could be. “It became a passion project—something that I just had to put my hands on, and I wasn’t going to stop trying until I was able to, whether it be for a client or myself,” he recalls. Finally, in April, he and his husband Luke acquired the home. What followed was a full-blown, downto-the-studs renovation of the house and the two-acre lot that happened in the seemingly impossible time span of only four months.

Garner says the flow of the house was “terrible.” Walls and partition walls cut off rooms. “The kitchen had partition walls everywhere. It was more or less a galley kitchen in a 6,000-square-foot house,” he says. “We had to reconfigure everything to make it flow correctly. We opened up all the rooms to one another, but still had them separate.”

The living room redesign included the addition of a sleek bar, a feature Garner says is one of the most special in the home. Its placement near the front door makes a statement that this is a house built for entertaining. With a sink, ice maker and beverage refrigerators, not to mention a climate-controlled wine room, the bar is fully equipped for hosting parties. Ditto for the newly added prep kitchen. After consulting with his mother, a former caterer and bakery owner, Garner designed the room with a separate entrance, large refrigerator and freezer and plenty of work space. “We tried to think of anything you could possibly need for a full-fledged party,” he says.

Theprimary suite received perhaps the most drastic makeover of any part of the house. “We redefined that whole space to make it functional,” Garner says, but function is just the beginning. Luxurious best describes the space now. In the gorgeous new bathroom, large-scale marble tile floors, a dual-entry shower with multiple heads, double floating vanities and a soaking tub with views of the backyard and lake behind the home create a spa-like environment. The new closet also has all the bells and whistles; custom shelves and hanging rods to the ceiling, purposebuilt features, and a washer and dryer for the ultimate convenience.

Garner chose a neutral color palette for the home’s interior, a selection he says is a bit unusual for him. “I love color, but I think design should be based on the house,” he says, adding that mostly neutrals seemed right in this instance. The one exception inside is the library, where the walls, trim and ceiling are drenched in a saturated tone. “I did a reverse effect on this house, dark and moody on the outside and light on the inside, because I felt like that’s what was needed. When I painted it black, it gave the place kind of a mysterious feel.”

Aside from his beloved baby grand piano, all the home’s furnishings were sourced new. Inspiration for the lighting came from an original piece that still remained intact. Garner fell in love with the fabulous cascading round chandelier from Italy and selected new fixtures from Visual Comfort to complement its dramatic mid-century beauty.

Thehome’s grounds received as much attention as the interior. The property had been neglected for some time, so an extensive cleanup was priority one. Then came the reimagining. Both spouses had input here, as Luke is Tense Design’s professional landscape designer. He went to work creating a setting that would do justice to the home. Incorporating the property’s desirable natural features and mature trees, his design included the addition of new landscaping close to the house. The trick was for it not to look new, says Ty. “It was made to look like it had always been there.”

After the whirlwind experience of a fast-paced renovation and living in the house while it was still under construction, Garner says he is extremely proud of the finished product, his vision realized. “The best thing about the house is how it functions now, not only for everyday living, but also for hosting a party, or whatever the case may be. It’s so multi purpose.”

"Mywhole family background is construction, so growing up that’s what I lived and breathed,” says Ty Garner. The Tupelo native first learned drafting in high school. He went on to hone his design skills working in retail, then in his uncle’s cabinet shop. A move to Oxford and a stint as the in-house hardscape designer at Elliott Lumber there led to a working relationship with veteran architectural designer Frank Tindall, whom Garner credits for starting him on the path to opening his own firm in 2019. “We’re a full-service residential design firm. We do everything: house plans, interior design, landscape design, project management, construction, etc. We’re literally there till the last picture is hung on the wall,” he says. Tense Design projects include renovations and new construction.

RECLAIMING WELL-BEING: THE RISE OF WOMEN’S WELLNESS TRAVEL

In recent years, more and more women are choosing to pack their bags, not just for sightseeing, but for self-care. Women’s wellness travel—a growing movement that blends rest, rejuvenation and discovery—is redefining how a vacation looks. Instead of returning home exhausted from over-scheduled itineraries, travelers come back restored, inspired and often transformed. This surge reflects a shift in priorities. Post-pandemic, women across age groups place well-being, mindfulness and balance at the top of their wish lists. They seek experiences that nurture both body and spirit: sunrise yoga on a Bali beach, sound-bath meditation in Sedona’s red rocks, a guided hike and spa day in the Swiss Alps, or a nutritionfocused retreat on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. Whether solo or in womenonly groups, the emphasis is on safe, supportive environments that encourage reflection, community and personal growth.

Wellness travel for women spans an inspiring spectrum, from active adventures to deeply restorative retreats. Some itineraries focus on movement and challenge; trekking through mountains, cycling scenic routes or joining surf camps designed specifically for female travelers. Others dive into culture and healing traditions like Ayurvedic therapies in Kerala, cacao ceremonies in Tulum or Nordic hot-spring rituals in Iceland.

Bali Rice Terrace Hike

Imagine waking to panoramic views of the Aegean Sea in Santorini and stepping into a spa sanctuary fragrant with jasmine, or flowing through yoga beneath towering Costa Rican trees before a volcanic mud bath. In Iceland, mineral-rich hot springs invite quiet reflection, while Bali’s sacred temples provide a serene backdrop for meditation and holistic workshops. High-end resorts are also curating bespoke programs with female guests in mind, blending medical assessments, spa therapies and lifestyle coaching for a truly personalized experience. What unites these diverse options is a common goal: giving women permission to step away from their daily demands and invest in themselves. In a world that celebrates constant productivity, carving out intentional time to rest and recalibrate can be profoundly empowering. Women’s wellness travel isn’t a fleeting trend, it’s a movement reshaping thought about vacations, self-care and even community.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT WELLNESS EXPERIENCE

With so many retreats and programs available, picking the right one can feel overwhelming. Start by clarifying your intention: are you looking for pure rest, a fitness challenge, a spiritual reset or a blend of all three? Being honest about your goals helps narrow down the options.

Yoga Class in Costa RIca

Next, look closely at the program details. What is the daily schedule like? How many participants will be in the group? Smaller groups often create a more intimate atmosphere, while larger ones can be more social and dynamic.

Budget is another key factor. Some all-inclusive luxury resorts provide spa treatments, meals and excursions, while others charge à la carte. If you’re going abroad, research travel logistics such as visa requirements and health precautions.

Finally, book early. Popular retreats can fill up six to 12 months in advance, especially during high-season months. If you’re new to wellness travel, consider starting with a weekend retreat before committing to a long international program. That way, you can get a feel for the pace and style of this kind of travel before investing in a more substantial journey.

Below are some top destinations that offer a blend of authentic wellness traditions, breathtaking surroundings and innovative longevity programming perfect for women seeking enrichment that nourishes body, mind and spirit:

SHORT WELLNESS GETAWAYS: WEEKEND ESCAPES

For those who can only slip away for a few days, weekend retreats deliver a potent dose of rejuvenation without a long-haul flight. Some favorites include:

• Se dona, Arizona – Red-rock hiking, vortex meditation tours and holistic spas

• Ojai, California – Boutique hotels and wellness studios, farm-to-table dining and wine-country hikes

• Ashe ville, North Carolina – Blue Ridge Mountain trails, hot-stone massages and artisan food dining

• Hudson V alley, New York – Yoga barns, wellness workshops and cozy inns near waterfalls

LONGER RETREATS & INTERNATIONAL JOURNEYS

For a deeper reset, consider week-long or multi-week programs abroad. Popular picks include:

• Cos ta Rica – Yoga and surf camps on the Pacific Coast, eco-lodges in lush rainforests

• T ulum, Mexico – Beachfront healing centers, ancient Mayan ceremonies and wellness festivals

• Bali, Indonesia – Ic onic yoga and meditation retreats, Balinese spa rituals and rice-terrace hikes

• K erala, India – Authentic Ayurveda treatments, yoga by the backwaters and cooking classes

• S wiss Alps or Dolomites – Guided hiking, thermal spas and mountain-view wellness hotels

• Slo venia – Thermal spas, quiet, affordable European wellness with nature at the doorstep

• San torini, Greece – Renewal, balance and inner peace by the Aegean Sea

Traveling with friends for these longer stays can help lower costs through shared rooms and provide emotional support when trying something new like a digital detox or a plant-based cleanse.

Tip: Choose a destination that is known not only for beauty but also for authentic wellness traditions for a truly enriching experience.

BENEFITS BEYOND THE TRIP

The true value of women’s wellness travel often reveals itself long after you’ve unpacked your suitcase. Beyond the spa treatments, scenic hikes or daily meditation classes, these experiences plant seeds for lasting change. Many travelers return home with healthier routines—morning yoga, mindful eating, better sleep habits—that become part of their everyday lives. The mental and emotional benefits can be even more profound. Stepping away from work, family obligations and screens gives women space to reset and gain perspective. Retreats often encourage journaling and reflection. Personal coaching sessions help clarify goals and release stress. This mental

clarity can improve decisionmaking and build resilience long after the trip ends. Another powerful takeaway is connection. Whether you travel solo or with friends, women-only environments foster a sense of community that can be hard to find at home. Shared meals, group classes and open discussions create bonds that often turn into ongoing support networks. These friendships and professional connections can last well beyond the retreat, offering encouragement and inspiration in daily life.

In the end, wellness travel is more than an indulgence, it’s an investment in yourself. The calm, confidence and new skills gained can ripple into work, relationships and your overall sense of wellbeing, making the journey the beginning of a broader transformation.

GIVING THE GIFT OF TRAVEL

Looking for the perfect gift of travel this holiday season? Wellness getaways make meaningful presents that go far beyond anything you could wrap in a box. Instead of another sweater or gadget, consider giving your sister, best friend or mother a weekend yoga retreat, a spaand-hiking escape in the mountains or a wellness-focused city break filled with healthy cuisine and mindful activities. These trips offer time, connection and transformation—experiences that linger long after the decorations are packed away. For couples or groups of friends, pooling resources to plan a restorative getaway can be a memorable way to celebrate milestones or simply say “thank you.”

Gifting travel, especially wellness travel, is more than a present, it’s an invitation to slow down, recharge and invest in self-care together.

LEGENDS

3310 HIDDEN CREEK LOOP WEST COLLIERVILLE, TN

AtAlbertine Company, building a home is about more than structure; it is about creating places that feel timeless, grounded and alive with detail. With over 150 years of combined experience in homebuilding and development, Albertine has become known for constructing residences that stand beautifully today and inspire for generations to come. The company is excited to present Legends, a home that reflects its name. Enduring architecture from LRK and fine craftsmanship meet natural textures, thoughtful details and a design story by City Hill Design that unfolds with every room.

Legends was named with intention: every detail was designed to feel enduring, rooted and worthy of being passed down. The story begins at the entry, where natural textures immediately set the tone. An elegant limestone wall and

wide-plank European White Oak floors lay the foundation, a reminder that true luxury is found in materials that only grow more beautiful with time.

Throughout the home, details carry this theme forward. Curved walls lead gracefully into the main living areas, while finely crafted millwork, cedar paneling and even a charming Dutch door in the laundry speak to the art of making a home feel intentional. These moments, small but deeply considered, are what make the house feel legendary.

The floor plan balances elegance with livability. Four bedrooms and four-and-a-half bathrooms include both a main-level primary suite and guest suite. Upstairs, two additional en suite bedrooms, a loft and a fully equipped media room create retreats designed for gathering, resting and entertaining—spaces that will hold family stories for years to come.

At the center of the home, the kitchen embodies the idea of legend in everyday living. Custom cabinetry, Thermador appliances and both a butler’s pantry and a mercantile pantry were designed not just for function, but for ritual: the making of meals, the sharing of wine, the welcoming of guests. Even the smallest spaces, like the powder bath with its floating Viola marble sink and bespoke millwork, were shaped to leave a lasting impression.

Moving through the house, art becomes an essential part of the story. Each piece has been thoughtfully curated in collaboration with local and regional artists to reflect the home’s theme of legends—we hope you enjoy the experience of legendary people, legendary places and legendary things. Enjoy the creative art that anchors the design, sparking memory, emotion and conversation.

The Legends is Albertine, LRK and City Hill Design’s vision of timeless living in Collierville’s Hidden Creek. Crafted with real materials, layered with thoughtful details and designed to inspire generations, it is a home that earns its name.

WILLOW CREEK MANOR

Eller

Construction and

the interior design team at Lovelace Studios present Willow Creek Manor, tucked into the beautiful Hidden Creek subdivision in Collierville, TN. This ~4,500-square-foot home is a study in contrasts—sophisticated yet spirited, polished yet full of personality. From the first step into the blue wainscot entry, the home exudes a sense of ease, where refined architectural gestures are paired with bold strokes of color and playful detail.

The kitchen sets the tone: expansive, light-filled and unapologetically functional, anchored by GE Café appliances and boasting a quirky yet refined scullery off to the side. A generous walk-in pantry expands the functionality of the space; natural textures and considered lighting throughout add depth and warmth. Just beyond, the living room extends the home’s sense of grandeur with a stained coffered ceiling, a floor-to-ceiling tiled fireplace, and a breakfast nook that spills naturally into the outdoors through a passthrough window to the outdoor kitchen.

In the primary suite, serenity takes center stage. The bathroom’s freestanding tub and expansive walk-in shower— wrapped in sleek Dekton with dual showerheads and a rain feature—create a spa-like atmosphere that feels indulgent yet understated. This is luxury designed not to impress, but to restore.

The story continues outdoors, where a heated plunge pool with a tanning ledge, a fully appointed kitchen and retractable Phantom Screens transform the patio into a yearround retreat. It’s here, between indoor elegance and openair living, that Willow Creek Manor finds its rhythm: a home that balances Southern refinement with a modern, playful edge.

JASPER

3300 HIDDEN CREEK LOOP WEST

COLLIERVILLE, TN

Withits layered rooflines and arched doorways, Jasper is a modern Tudor that carries the weight of tradition while embracing the ease of contemporary living. Built by Murphy Custom Homes with plans by Classic Home Designs , the nearly 5,000-square-foot home is both stately and welcoming, its brick exterior hinting at the craftsmanship within.

Step inside and the design by Maggie Clarke Interiors unfolds with a thoughtful balance of history and modernity:

classic lines and trim work mingle with unexpected paint colors, rich textures and pattern play. The open-concept kitchen and living room anchor the home, while intimate retreats like “the snug” invite quiet moments with a cocktail and a wellworn book. Throughout, the work of Aviles Construction elevates every detail, from the bespoke millwork to the architectural trim that feels destined to age gracefully. Pella floor-to-ceiling windows flood the rooms with light, highlighting the brass and marble finishes, and a palette of blues and greens that nods to English tradition.

Designed with longevity in mind, the feel is timeless rather than trendy.

On the lower level, a scullery, formal dining room, breakfast nook and primary suite offer a sense of oldworld rhythm. Upstairs, three bedrooms, a built-in desk and a generous media room embrace the needs of modern life. At the back of the home, an accordion patio door blurs the line between indoors and out, opening to a space made for evenings of entertaining.

Jasper is more than a house—it’s a study in how tradition and innovation can live gracefully side by side.

Smoky Bacon Snack Mix

SMOKY BACON SNACK MIX

MOST PEOPLE HAVE THEIR OWN VERSION OF THE FAMOUS HOLIDAY SNACK MIX. SOME CALL IT NUTS AND BOLTS; WE GREW UP CALLING IT TRASH. WHATEVER YOU CALL IT, IT IS A MUST FOR THE HOLIDAYS. MY HUSBAND CAN EAT A DOUBLE BATCH BY HIMSELF IN ABOUT A WEEK. I CAME ACROSS THIS RECIPE THE OTHER DAY AND DECIDED TO GIVE IT A TRY—IT IS A KEEPER. I LOVE SMOKEHOUSE

ALMONDS AND, OF COURSE, BACON MAKES EVERYTHING BETTER. I THINK YOU COULD ADD OTHER FAVORITES TO THIS BUT IT IS ADDICTIVE JUST THE WAY IT IS.

INGREDIENTS

6 SLICES THICK-CUT BACON

¼ CUP UNSALTED BUTTER, MELTED

1 TBSP. SMOKED PAPRIKA

1 TBSP. WORCESTERSHIRE SAUCE

2 TSP. LAWRY’S SEASONED SALT

4 CUPS CORN CHEX

2 CUPS SMOKEHOUSE ALMONDS

INSTRUCTIONS

PREHEAT THE OVEN TO 275˚. COOK BACON SLICES IN A LARGE SKILLET UNTIL CRISP. REMOVE TO A PAPER TOWEL AND LET COOL. POUR BACON DRIPPINGS INTO A HEATPROOF BOWL AND SET ASIDE.

WHISK TOGETHER MELTED BUTTER, SMOKED PAPRIKA, WORCESTERSHIRE SAUCE, SEASONED SALT AND 3 TABLESPOONS OF THE BACON DRIPPINGS IN A LARGE BAKING PAN. ADD THE CEREAL AND ALMONDS AND TOSS TO EVENLY COAT. BAKE ABOUT 25-30 MINUTES, STIRRING EVERY 5-7 MINUTES. REMOVE FROM THE OVEN, ADD CRUMBLED BACON AND ENJOY! STORE IN AN AIRTIGHT CONTAINER. I HONESTLY DON’T KNOW THE SHELF LIFE OF THIS BECAUSE IT WAS GONE IN A COUPLE OF DAYS!

Gratitude in the Home of the Heart

Everymorning, before I rush into the demands of the day, I sit in quiet meditation with the Lord. I begin by thanking Him for the gift of the day itself and for the opportunity to glorify Him in my relationships. I then sit quietly, seeking the connection between His Spirit and my own. As I close my meditation, I ask, “Lord, what do You want me to know about You in this day? What do You have for me to learn from You today?”

With that prayer, I open my Bible at random and read what He has given me for the morning. I contemplate, pray and journal from what I’ve read. Some days, the scripture comforts; other days, it pierces and challenges me. Yet without fail, I find God has tucked away a transformative message; something meant to guide, strengthen and shape my steps. This rhythm reminds me daily: I am not self-made. Everything I am, everything I have, flows from God’s intentional design.

When I make space for this daily practice I notice a shift in how I carry myself. I move into the day calmer and with more clarity and courage. When I neglect it I feel scattered, easily swayed by the weight of my thoughts or the stress of my responsibilities. This practice has become less of a

discipline and more of a lifeline. It is the space where God reorients my heart, speaks into my confusion and reminds me that His wisdom steadies me far more than my own understanding ever could.

SELF-LED, UNDER GOD’S LEADERSHIP

And yet, I also believe God calls me to be self-led—not self-sufficient apart from Him, but a faithful steward of my choices, my inner life and my calling under His direction. This is the place where faith and mental health intersect. Therapy teaches us to notice, name and lead our inner world with authenticity. It helps us untangle the fears, wounds and patterns that keep us stuck. It gives language to the emotions that often feel overwhelming or confusing. Scripture, in turn, teaches us to anchor that selfleadership in the wisdom and Spirit of God. Together, they guard us from two distortions: the illusion that we are entirely self-made, and the passivity of abandoning our agency altogether.

2 Peter 1 gives us a powerful roadmap for this integration. Peter writes that God’s divine power has already given us everything we need for life and godliness. And yet, he calls us to make every effort to grow in goodness,

knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection and love. Notice the tension: God has already provided, yet we are invited to practice. Healing and growth are not earned by striving, nor passively received without participation; they are co-labored. God initiates and we respond.

I especially appreciate the word practice in the ESV translation. Practice reminds me that I don’t have to be perfect, I only need to be faithful and intentional. When I fall short, and I do, God redeems and restores. I see this echoed in Solomon’s dedication of the temple in 1 Kings 8, where he prayed with the expectation that Israel would stumble but asked God to forgive and restore when they returned with sincere hearts. Both Peter and Solomon remind us that the life of faith is about daily practice, not flawless performance.

THE POWER OF GRATITUDE

Gratitude is one of the most transformative ways we practice. Research shows that gratitude expressed directly to God through prayer leads to greater health and wellbeing than journaling alone or even voicing thanks to another person. Why? Because gratitude that acknowledges the sacred binds us to something beyond ourselves.

In my own life, gratitude is often woven into that morning rhythm: “Thank You, Lord, for breath. Thank You for another chance. Thank You for Your Spirit at work in me.” These small prayers ground me in God’s provision and remind me that even my smallest steps are carried by His grace. Gratitude lifts my perspective, strengthens my

relationships and lessens the loneliness that so many in our culture experience. Gratitude also reshapes how I relate to others. When I approach my day with gratitude to God, I am less reactive to conflict, less consumed by criticism and more open to love. It shifts my focus from what I lack to the abundance of what God has already given. That shift changes the way I parent, the way I show up in relationships at home and as a professional, the way I serve and the way I live in community.

A THANKSGIVING PRACTICE

As we enter the Thanksgiving season, I am reminded that gratitude is not a holiday ritual but a daily practice, just like faith. Gratitude keeps us aware that our lives are not self-made, but Spirit-sustained. It reminds us that perfection is not the goal; practice is. And it anchors us in the truth that God’s goodness meets us every single day. This Thanksgiving, may we practice gratitude not only as words spoken around a table but as a posture of the heart. A daily return to God, a daily remembrance that He provides all we need and a daily willingness to respond with intention, faith and love. When we weave gratitude into both our faith and our healing, we begin to see that we are not simply surviving another year, we are being transformed, one practice at a time.

A Gift of Gratitude

Volunteers from The Sewing House honor Mid South Veterans

When Jennifer and Tom Reith, owners of The Sewing House, launched the Memphis area chapter of Quilts of Valor (QOV) in 2021, they wanted to bring together local quilters in a meaningful way to thank service men and women touched by war. Throughout the year, The Sewing House Quilts of Valor Volunteers team up with VFW Post 5066 auxiliary members to make and award patriotic quilts. What started with 17 quilts in 2021 has blossomed into a total of 149 quilts awarded by the local group.

The Mid South chapter is part of a national nonprofit organization founded in 2003 that has awarded over 422,000 quilts. When founder Catherine Roberts made her son Nat a quilt during his deployment in Iraq, she launched a movement. To help achieve the local chapter’s current goal of 40 quilts a year, volunteers pick up patriotic fabric kits from The Sewing House shops in East Memphis and Collierville. They sew at home or at in-person events to complete beautiful red, white and blue quilts. Individual quilters or guilds make finished quilts, while others piece the tops. Some sewists finish binding, while others label quilts or organize events. This growing group currently numbers 170 volunteers and welcomes new members continually. For information, go to The Sewing House Quilts of Valor Volunteers on Facebook. The Sewing House manages in-person sewing meetups and presentations, and posts helpful instructions on its blog,

ShopTheSewingHouse.com.

Funding for the effort comes from individuals who generously provide their fabric, time and talent. Larger donors such as Collierville Rotary and local businesses also contribute. Monetary donations fund the purchase of quilt batting and backing. The Sewing House contributes a portion of fabrics and provides expertise with professional longarm quilting services to assist in constructing the award quilts.

Each year on the Sunday before Veterans Day honorees receive quilts during a ceremony. The 2025 event is slated for 4 pm on Nov. 9 at The Quonset event venue in Collierville. It is open to the public with advance RSVP. Bobby Johnson, retired Collierville police officer, veteran (Vietnam Era & Cold War) and past commander of Robert T. Jamison VFW Post 5066, will be the guest speaker.

To learn more or nominate service men and women touched by war, visit www.QOVF.org.

“Not everyone answers the call to serve our country. It is those rare individuals who are selfless enough to sacrifice so

much so we can all enjoy the freedom we have. We’ll never know exactly what each veteran experiences and how they are touched by war, but we can welcome our veterans home, support them and their families, and thank them for their service whenever possible.”
