Here we are, another month has passed and how quickly did that go, August already. We have had another exciting month with our artists and the standard of their art just keeps getting better and better. The more challenges that are laid out for them, the more they step up to the plate and deliver more than one could ever dream of. Truly inspiring. This month we have all our regulars and our newest is the combination of art from Robyn McLauchlan and Marina Hobbs with their delightful series “Whispers of Trust”. I am absolutely loving this new regular series from these two girls, so talented. We have a new tutorial from Andrew Haysom on using a Vectorscope, challenge entries for Coffee and Pixels theme “Frustration”, challenge entries for Art Buddies Quotes Challenge with the theme “Whispers of Magic” and another in the Redlands Digital Group’s “Chinese Whispers Series”. Congratulations also go to our artists who have had their images displayed in “Living The Photo Artistic Life’s” magazine. Well done. SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION
VECTORSCOPE By Andrew Haysom
Adobe Camera Raw version 18.4 has added a Vectorscope, a tool that would be familiar to users of some video editing software like Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve. A Vectorscope is a circular diagram that represents the colours in your image, much like the Histogram represents the luminosity of your image. To show the Vectorscope right-click the Histogram and choose the Show Vectorscope menu option (see Figure 1).

The hue of the colours in your image is represented by their position around the hue circle shown on the outer edge of the Vectorscope. The saturation of colours is represented by their closeness to the centre of the circle. Unsaturated colours are shown near the centre, with saturation increasing as you move out to the edge of the circle. Hovering the mouse pointer over the dots on the outside of the Vectorscope will cause the colour names to be shown (see Figure 2).

Another valuable feature on the new Vectorscope is the Skin Tone Indicator line. To turn this on, right-click the Vectorscope and choose Show Skin Tone Indicator (see figure 3).

This line shows you approximately where human skin tones should occur, and it can be useful when assessing your images to eliminate colour casts on your subjects skin. As you adjust the colours in your image using the various tools available in ACR the Vectorscope will adjust accordingly. In Figure 4, I have made a significant boost to the saturation of the same image I’ve used for all diagrams in this article. You’ll note the dots on the Vetorscope have all spread out towards the edge of the circle and are shown in more saturated colours.

As you move your mouse cursor over your image a small crosshair will appear in the Vectorscope showing the exact position of the colour directly underneath your mouse pointer (see Figure 5).

If you use any of the masking tools to select certain parts of your image, the Vectorscope will adjust and only show the dots on the Vectorscope for the parts of the image selected by the mask. In Figure 6 I have created a Facial Skin mask for my image, so now you’ll see a much smaller plot on the Vectorscope with all the dots clustered around the Skin Tone Indicator line.
