Spring is finally here, all the wattles and the blossoms are out in full force and we are starting to see some sun start to force its way through the clouds. How exciting! But not as exciting as what our artists have put together for you, another full edition of amazing storytelling. I love how all our artists pour their heart and soul into the images they produce, you can almost live what they see. We have a wonderful tutorial from Andrew Haysom on Invert Hue Range Markers, our Coffee and Pixels entries with this months theme titled “Don’t Look Back”. I love this month’s theme as Maureen Maxwell has wrote a little story to go along with her image, it is definately a must read. We have our challenge entries for the Art Buddies Quotes Challenge with the theme being “A Page From An Unwritten Storybook” and another in the Redlands Digital Group’s “Chinese Whispers Series”. This month our two ladies Marina Hobbs and Robyn McLauchlan have outdone themselves with their images for their “Unintentional Still Life” series, simply outstanding. Congratulations also go to our artists who have had their images displayed in “Living The Photo Artistic Life’s” magazine. Well done. SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION

INVERT HUE RANGE MARKERS By Andrew Haysom

A small but very useful addition was made to the Photoshop Hue/Saturation (HSL) adjustment layer in the version 26.6.0 beta in March 2025 and added to the production version of Photoshop shortly after. It’s been there a while, but it’s a very small little icon that offers a surprisingly useful function, and it’s such a small little icon you may not have noticed it.

Everyone is aware that you can use the Targeted Selection tool or the relatively new Adjust Colors / Prominent Colors features in the Contextual Task Bar to select a colour range to adjust. In the example shown in Figure 1a, the targeted selection tool has been used to select the models blue dress and the Saturation slider has been dragged left to desaturate the dress.

You’ll notice in Figure 1a the Before/After colour sliders at the bottom of the adjustment layer Properties window. The top colour bar is the Before and shows the colour selected, the bottom colour bar is the After and shows the adjusted colours. You can adjust the selected range by dragging the vertical bar and triangle sliders between the Before/After colour bars. The area between the vertical bars shows the colour area that is 100% selected. The area between the vertical bar and triangle on each side shows the fade or feather range into the not selected colours. The actual positions of these within the colour wheel are shown below the colour bars (in Fig 1a they show 195° / 225° and 255° / 285°). The new feature is the little icon on the right-hand side, just above the Before/After colour bars (see Figure 1a). This icon will be inactive (greyed out) if you do not yet have a colour range selected. Pressing this icon allows you to invert the selected colour range, so that the selected colour is not selected and everything else is selected. A very useful new function when you want to make an adjustment to everything except a particular colour range. In Figure 1b the icon has been pressed and now everything except the blue dress has been selected and desaturated. You’ll notice the change in the selection range lines/triangles between the colour bars and that the selected range now shows 255° / 285° and 195° / 225° (reversed from Figure 1a). This new feature was suggested to Adobe by Photoshop Training Channel trainer Jesús Ramirez, you can watch his video about the update on YouTube here

NO! KEEP GOING! DON’T LOOK BACK! By Maureen Maxwell He was running scared and fearful for his life. Jarrod had received a letter with a typewritten address, but the postmark was illegible. There was no return address on the envelope. He opened it thinking it was probably from a charity seeking help. But, no, it was a warning from a colleague, in a similar field of science, he’d met some years ago at a scientific conference. They had caught up briefly after he presented a paper on the research his laboratory was focussing on. Since then, their interactions had been spasmodic and generally superficial, but they had occasionally exchanged thoughts and ideas about the general direction of scientific research in their respective fields and areas of interest. When he read the letter (also typewritten), he couldn’t believe the claims being made. He reread it thinking he had misunderstood the text. However, sadly he had understood it fully at first reading. The letter reported untrue, misleading and serious allegations his colleague had heard that went to the core of Jarrod’s values and ethics. Also mention of violence if he didn’t stop his humanitarian approach to science, plus the development and distribution of life-saving drugs. There were also overheard threats to damage his reputation to a point where he would never be able to restore his place in the scientific world and the validity of his current research projects. In other words, he was at risk of losing everything, including possibly his life. There had been occasional strange happenings, at odd times, around his home in the last few weeks. Men in dark cars sitting opposite his house for hours on end. He’d also had the premonition that his research papers, and other data, in his lab had been tampered with. Initially, he put it down to mental exhaustion due to excessive time spent in his laboratory as he concentrated on his research. His main project was at an exciting stage and nearing the time he would release it to the world. He had devoted years of his life to bring his initial concept to fruition. The years of struggles, and the many frustrations, despite occasional breakthroughs, had been very difficult. However, success loomed on the horizon as he was on the cutting edge of a major discovery that would benefit humanity. He decided very early on he would not apply for a patent in any part of the world, nor sell his findings to the large pharmaceutical companies which only focussed on profits. Jarrod had always been an admirer of researchers like Dr Jonas Salk who’d developed the Polio Vaccine, and Drs Sir Alexander Fleming and Sir Howard Florey who discovered and developed penicillin for wide distribution. These scientists refused to patent their discoveries and gave them freely to the world to help all of humanity. Despite the pressure from Big Pharma, Jarrod would follow their example. His research team was quite small, but now he was having second thoughts about the integrity of one of its members. A person, with expensive tastes, who loved the finer things in life and hankered for the income to provide them. Jarrod was absolutely determined to survive. So, he hurried to a secret, safe and secure location where he could finalise his research and prepare his presentation.

Unbeknown to his co-workers Jarrod had been keeping a copy off-site of his data, research notes and process. He had recently prepared a draft paper of his conclusions and this, too, was off-site in secure storage away from his home. He had planned to deliver it at an upcoming scientific conference and release it to the world. There was no copy of this draft located on the laboratory’s IT systems. Nor he had he communicated his conclusions to anyone at this stage. But then had come the threatening phone calls at all hours of the day and night. He became so concerned about his research plans, and his own well-being, he decided he needed to act, until he could get to the conference and present his findings. He would not look back, but keep going forward. He would not let them win. He would not let greed take over.
