The American Indian Studies program centers around community-engaged teaching and research, connecting students with Indigenous nations, organizations and leaders to address real-world challenges facing Native communities. Whether through collaborative projects, field-based learning or applied research, students gain meaningful, hands-on experience that bridges the classroom and the community. These opportunities build practical knowledge, strengthen cultural understanding and develop the professional skills needed to lead, adapt and thrive in diverse environments. Alexander S. (Tohono O’odham) graduated in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in American Indian studies before earning a degree in library and information science. Today, Alex is the director of ASU’s Labriola National American Indian Data Center, implementing culturally informed research support services and Indigenized communitydriven archives for Tribal communities.

Lourdes P. (Hia-Ced O’odham) graduated in 2023 with a degree in American Indian studies. As a student, her work as her tribe’s official archivist was instrumental in their petition for federal recognition. She now works at Tribal Tech, LLC, where she supports eastern region tribes and Native nonprofits in maintaining their federal grants.
