Why has the Innovation Audit been created? In a fast changing and increasingly complex world, it is those teams that are agile and unafraid to try new ideas (to trip and learn) that will be most effective. Those able to flex and change quickly as the market requires, without losing cohesion and strategic direction will be the ones that lead the way. In order for this potentially different way of thinking & working to be most effective, the context in which the team operates needs to be supportive. To maximise this potential, the team and organisation need to be aligned and be able to work in both a high performance and a learning environment at the same time.

What is to be gained by using this approach? • An understanding of the Group Dynamic and the Environment Dynamic. These two interrelated dynamics directly impact how agile and collaborative groups and teams will be. • The Environment Dynamic: In general, these factors ‘enable’ greater collaboration, higher performance & effectiveness of the groups or teams. If you believe you are experiencing ‘resistance to change’ this is a good place to start. • The Learning Dynamic: When this dominates, the group will be experiencing greater learning behaviours, inspiring creativity, innovation and agile behaviours. • The Control Dynamic: When this dominates, the group will be experiencing greater controlling behaviours suppressing creativity, innovation, resulting in less agile behaviours.
Outcome You will establish a common language to discuss the invisible dynamics in play. You will be able to decide what type of group you need as you grow and define how you can all get there.

Purpose: Develop awareness and provide a framework and language to explore team and group dynamics Typical time: 45 minutes per domain explored A tabletop game for a group of 2 to 8 using the Boxes Set and 2 to 4 players for the Taster Kit with instructions on the tabletop poster Use duplicate resources for additional groups Part 1 • Explore the perceptions of group members in term of how the group behaves using the set of 10 statement cards for the domain you would like to explore. Note: Decide if you would like to use the score sheets discussed on the following pages before you begin. • We recommend exploring the Environment Dynamic, then the Learning Dynamic and then finally the Control Dynamic. Only explore the Control Dynamic when there is a reasonable level of trust and openness within the group. Part 2 & 3 • Place the 1st and 2nd voting cards next to the statement card(s) (0-9 on the tabletop poster or board) you, as an individual would like to see change (each person gets two votes. Part 4 • Place the ‘We need help here’ card next to the statement card (0-9 on the poster or board) you believe the group needs external help to bring about change. Part 5 • Place the ‘The Change Card’ next to the statement card the GROUP believe needs to change. This is the GROUP’S Magic Wand time! The one change that would make all the difference.

1 to 4 players, one round takes typically 30 minutes Set Up Each player has a set of 10 score cards 1 to 10 with the same colour piece printed on the score side. Collect the colour pieces that match the score card set. Stack the Voting Cards in the two boxes to the left. Stack the Help Cards and Change Card below. Shuffle the Randomize Cards and place on the board.
1st Voting Cards Step 2. Place the 1st Voting Card next to the Dynamic you would like to see change using the card with the same colour as the pieces you have used for Step 1 of the game
Select which Dynamic you are going to play: Environment, Learning or Control Dynamic Place the Dynamic Cards face down in the numbered boxes below.
2nd Voting Cards
How to Play Step 1 In turn, pick up a Randomize Card and turn over the Dynamic card with the same number. Take it in turns to read the main statement aloud. Start a timer for the agreed time (suggest 60 seconds) Each player places one of their 10 Score Cards, face down in front of them . Scoring 1 if you don‘t see the behaviour, and 10 where you often see this behaviour (or anywhere in between). When all score cards have been placed face down, turn them over to share the scores with each other
Step 3. Place the 2nd Voting Card next to the Dynamic you would like to see change, using the same colour
When the timer has stopped, each player now places one of their game pieces on the score scale on the board using the same colour as printed on the score card. Repeat with the remaining Dynamic cards. Once completed you can start voting.
