Aspen Mountain is where it all began nearly 70 years ago. While the sport of skiing has changed quite a bit since then, one thing has remained constant: “Ajax” is still a thrilling mountain to explore. Over time, the mountain’s terrain has evolved to include challenging glades, bumps, steeps and two of North America’s best mountain restaurants: The Sundeck and Ajax Tavern. With an exciting mix of intermediate and expert terrain, Aspen Mountain endures the test of time.
It doesn’t take long to fall in love with Aspen Highlands. Adored by locals for its hidden stashes of powder and the pristine runs of Highland Bowl, this mountain defies comparison. Expert skiers can take their pick of steeps off the Deep Temerity lift, while beginners and intermediates can enjoy several brilliant cruisers mid-mountain. Perhaps the most essential Aspen Highlands experience is dining on fondue and raclette from the elevated perch of Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro, with unobstructed views of the famous Maroon Bells.
The beauty of Buttermilk lies in its dual personalities. In one regard, it has always been a beginner-friendly mountain with long and easy runs, and scenic views of nearby Pyramid Peak. On the opposite end of the spectrum, lies the terrain park and its 22-foot Superpipe, which has played host to ESPN’s Winter X Games 12 years in a row, and has earned the #1 ranking for a third consecutive year from Transworld Snowboarding Magazine. If you want to start out easy — or dare to be the next big thing in freestyle skiing and riding — Buttermilk is the place to be.
You could spend your entire trip exploring Snowmass and never ski the same run twice. With 91 trails and the largest lift-served descent in North America (1,343 vertical meters), there is plenty of terrain to enjoy for all levels of skiers and riders. Families in particular enjoy this mountain because of its variety, as well as the extensive Treehouse Kids’ Adventure Center. Dine at the new Elk Camp restaurant (or enjoy the cozy environs of the Lynn Britt Cabin), and ski-in/ ski-out as much as you like — 95% of accommodations in Snowmass Village offer direct access to the mountain.

In honor of the Norse God of Snow, Ullr, Elk Camp at Snowmass is transformed into a nighttime winter wonderland. Guests and locals alike are encouraged to light up the night with friends and family while enjoying old-fashioned winter outdoor activities such as a visit to Ullr’s ghost ship, the Viking sledding hill, s’mores and hot chocolate by the campfire and ice skating.
