Gratitude Reflecting on my first year as Head of School at The American School in Japan fills me with deep appreciation for this extraordinary community. Seeing the joy on students’ faces as they come to school each day and their excitement and dedication to doing meaningful and challenging work has been a delight. I am also thankful for the community’s shared commitment to growth that ensures that ASIJ remains at the forefront of international education. We all recognize that continuously evolving to meet the needs of our students is an important responsibility we share. A cornerstone of my approach to last year was listening. Through continuous dialogue with our parents, alumni, and friends, I gained invaluable insight and perspectives on where our immediate focus needed to be. This direct input informed the decisions we subsequently made around improvements to our campus infrastructure and expanded staffing to enhance daily student life across all our divisions. This responsiveness was only made possible by the unprecedented generosity of our community. We are thrilled to share that the 2025–26 year was a record-breaking year of philanthropy for the school with our total attainment reaching ¥1 billion for the first time in a single year. The ASIJ Annual Fund reached a historic high, while new major gift commitments were secured to expand our endowment, revitalize outdoor learning spaces, and strengthen learning support programs across the entire school. Every gift, volunteer hour, and constructive conversation strengthens the foundation of our school. Thank you for your partnership, your investment in our mission, and your belief in our students. The Purpose and IMpact of your giving ASIJ’s momentum is fueled by the generosity of our alumni, families, employees, and friends. The 2025–26 school year marked a powerful turning point: our community stepped forward with historic financial support, and those generous gifts enabled us to upgrade core spaces, expand student support programs, and refresh learning and gathering environments over the summer. Every gift is a direct vote of confidence in our mission and translates immediately into tangible results for our students. Donor support allows us to retain exceptional educators, launch transformative programs, and elevate the spaces where our community learns and connects. To match our bold ambitions for the future, we rely on your active partnership. Thank you for your gifts in 2025-26. The next several pages detail what you made possible through annual, endowed, and planned giving.

Meeting the moment for immediate impact Meeting the moment and supporting immediate priorities to make a difference, the ASIJ Annual Fund and other unrestricted support ensure flexibility, stability, and excellence throughout the year. In the 2025-26 school year, you gave over JP¥200 million to the ASIJ Annual Fund.

Creating a permanent, sustainable source of funding ASIJ’s permanently restricted endowment was established and invested in 2022. Each contribution increases the value of ASIJ’s total endowment and can be designated to support areas aligned with donors’ interests and the school’s mission. ASIJ’s endowment is a sustainable funding source that gives the school confidence to grow and improve as strategic developments and initiatives change. In the 2025-26 school year, you gave over JP¥125 million for ASIJ’s endowment and established five new funds.

Leaving a legacy Planning a bequest allows donors to arrange a gift now to be allocated in the future through a will or trust. There are several ways to define the amount of charitable gifts left in estate plans. Commitments from alumni and former faculty continue to build on the legacy of support that has been a constant at ASIJ since our inception in 1902. Donors are recognized through membership to ASIJ’s Gate Society.

Campus Experience Physical transformations across our campuses this year went beyond basic maintenance to actively shape the student and visitor experience, inspiring pride and unlocking potential. We know that first impressions matter and so newly installed landmark letters at the main entrance to the Chofu campus now welcome visitors to ASIJ. This bold greeting creates a powerful sense of arrival, instilling immediate pride in students, welcoming back alumni, and establishing an inviting, memorable moment for guests.

Wonder walls The Early Learning Center (ELC) received a vibrant interior refresh with the installation of new, carefully selected wall coverings throughout its shared spaces. The renewed interiors create a warm and welcoming atmosphere where our youngest learners feel inspired to explore, create, and grow.

MAKING THE CUT Upgraded desktop laser cutters and engravers were added to our Design and Innovation resources. As radio frequency metal tube lasers, they have a finer beam than the previous laser cutters, which allows for more precise positioning of cuts, wasting less material. These lasers also last longer than glass tube lasers and move faster, so more student projects can be completed in a shorter period of time.

STAY GOLDEN A fresh palette of our signature black, gold, and heritage orange paint was applied throughout key Chofu campus corridors, strengthening school pride and identity across our shared spaces. To complement this visual update, new directional signage was installed to streamline wayfinding for students and guests. Outdoors and indoors alike, newly planted gardens and seating areas offer welcoming spaces for study, relaxation, and informal connection. 6

IT’s a BREEZE A milestone for our campus facilities this year was the installation of modern air conditioning units in the High School Gym. As the only space on campus capable of accommodating the entire high school student body, the gymnasium’s utility was previously constrained by Japan’s summer heat. This essential upgrade unlocks year-round functionality, ensuring safe, climatecontrolled conditions for divisional assemblies and major athletic milestones like the annual YUJO Volleyball Tournament or the Kanto Classic Basketball tournament.

WE’ve GOT IT COVERED The covered courts behind the elementary school underwent a comprehensive renovation to expand their role beyond recess and PE. Featuring a new cushioned, impact-absorbing floor, the space includes newly painted markings to encourage creative, active play and a bold Mustangs mural. This revitalized area can now serve the entire elementary community as a safe and versatile co-curricular extension of the classroom.

Guided by our Know, Value, Care ethos and fueled by philanthropy, holistic efforts ensure that every Mustang is fully seen, known, and supported across every stage of their journey.

Thanks to the generous support of our donor community, through current use giving and new endowed funds, ASIJ is thrilled to expand student support. One expansion is to our Multilingual Learner (MLL) program with dedicated MLL teachers. With over 40 languages represented across our student body, this crucial investment ensures every child is fully supported, seen, and known while honoring the vibrant linguistic diversity that defines our school. Part of ASIJ’s Know, Value, Care ethos is knowing, valuing, and caring for students’ language, Adrienne Waller, ASIJ’s director of student support, explained. “Language includes linguistic aspects and also cultural impacts; language is a way in which we share who we are, what we are, what matters to us.” “What having additional MLL teachers allows us to do is celebrate the benefits of multilingualism, and amplify them” in part by equipping homeroom and subject teachers with deeper insights into the benefits of multilingualism, Adrienne continued. Now in her second year at ASIJ, Adrienne spent her first year working, with our support teachers, through the Multilingual Learning Research Center’s inventory, an assessment of our school’s practices. This year’s expanded team will build on last year’s inventory and strategically refine

ASIJ’s approach using strategies backed by research. Studies show that developing and maintaining a child’s home language directly strengthens secondary language acquisition and growth; that switching between languages is a natural, sophisticated learning tool; and that multilingualism enhances executive functioning, cognitive flexibility, empathy, and global perspective, building directly into ASIJ’s Portrait of a Learner while respecting and leveraging each child’s background and abilities. The team also looks forward to partnering with parents to understand the home and heritage languages students use, and is committed to honoring the linguistic and cultural identities of our students, giving them every opportunity to share who they are. Just as honoring linguistic identity ensures students are fully seen, providing targeted developmental support ensures they have the physical, sensory, and cognitive tools to thrive in the classroom. *** A pre-kindergartener grasps a pencil to write their full name; a first grader checks a visual schedule to navigate their morning routine; a third grader takes a purposeful movement break before settling into a math lesson.

Behind these classroom moments lies a significant milestone for our community. Thanks to philanthropic support, ASIJ recently expanded its student support services with the addition of a dedicated occupational therapist (OT). By embedding specialized care directly onto campus, donor generosity has created a proactive, early-intervention model that empowers students and aligns with their classroom teachers’ strategies, too. Occupational therapy in a school setting goes beyond physical development—it addresses the whole child. Bridging the gap between medical expertise and classroom learning, ASIJ’s occupational therapist will begin work across three focus areas: Physical: Strengthening core stability with alternative seating options or positioning cues, and fine motor control through practical tools like thick triangular pencils Cognitive: Teaching students how to plan, organize, and self-regulate using a visual schedule, breaking down instructional steps, and providing organizers for brainstorming Sensory: Balancing sensory thresholds through environmental modifications, like movement breaks or using pale paper to avoid glare and improve focus

To maximize long-term impact, the OT role at ASIJ will focus first on upskilling the entire learning environment. Our occupational therapist will closely collaborate with classroom teachers, counselors, and support teachers across the Early Learning Center and Elementary School, while offering consultative support for students in the middle and high schools as needed. By continuing to educate our community on the “why” behind specific student needs, ASIJ is building on its culture of inclusion, modifying environments before challenges become barriers, and celebrating diversity. As the program grows, our occupational therapy program will move from general consultations and upskilling to universal screening for our younger learners and offering targeted interventions with both hands-on support for students in classrooms and regular consultations with teachers. When young learners acquire the physical, cognitive, and sensory tools they need early in their educational journey, the impact lasts a lifetime. Donor support has made personalized care into an everyday reality at ASIJ, ensuring every student has the foundation to thrive. While tailored support lays a strong foundation for individual student progress and growth, creating a sense of belonging also relies on

environments and social structures that bring students together. The middle school house system is designed to integrate students across different grade levels, rather than keeping them isolated in their grades. Throughout the year, students participate in friendly competitions, such as ping pong tournaments and spirit rallies, while earning points to foster camaraderie and student connections. The system reinforces ASIJ’s core values of character, courage, and compassion.

— Cam ’31 For over two decades, our cafeteria tables served generations of ASIJ students—and survived countless plates of katsu curry. But as students grow and transition across divisions, the cafeteria remains the ultimate constant. This year, we replaced aging furniture with versatile, bench-style seating to lower social barriers and increase capacity in an indoor gathering space. Guided by the simple

philosophy that there is always room for more, the new layout fosters connection and simplifies seating. With better, adaptable seating, students are invited to take pride in a welcoming space that builds community. Additional seating also allows for more and bigger gatherings in a climate-controlled space. “As students move from elementary school, through middle and then finally to high school, their teachers change and classrooms change, and the two places that stay the same are the bus ride and the cafeteria,” Phil Meehan, elementary school counselor, said, illustrating how the cafeteria is one of the hearts of the school. “With our old cafeteria tables, the individual seats sometimes made friend groups split up. With the new tables, there’s always room for more.” Beyond shared physical spaces, student connection flourishes when students come together to explore shared interests and collaborate on common goals. ASIJ’s expansive co-curricular program serves as an essential proving ground for our Portrait of a Learner competencies. With dozens of clubs and activities, sports, and arts ensembles, Mustangs step outside their comfort zones, discovering passions and practicing leadership, citizenship, and problem-solving. with students toward common goals, enriching ASIJ’s commitment to Know, Value, Care. Classmates, once strangers passing in the hallways, develop meaningful friendships as they pursue shared interests and identities together. Ruzgar ’27 credits the VEX Robotics team with solidifying his path to pursue engineering and physics as a career. “I came to this conclusion by being my team’s builder and designer. [I’ve also] learned the hard and annoying side of engineering—design and failure, and how to manage communication inside our team…I’ve learned that there is always a better, faster, lighter design, and we’ve learned to keep trying our best. I’ve made countless friends because of robotics, been to places that I had never been, learned new skills like better design and building, as well as team coordination and communications. ASIJ’s high school also boasts a number of affinity groups, spaces created for ASIJ students to connect based on shared identities or ideologies. At ASIJ, the purpose of an affinity group is to provide a supportive space for individuals. The Black Student Union (BSU) is joined by the South Asian Student Union (SASU), Enough is Enough (EE), Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA), the Men’s Mental Health Club, and Stolen Focus. While clubs are activity based, skill building,

or hobby focused, affinity groups are safe spaces for common identity or social connection to come together. They explore shared experiences, provide mutual support, and foster understanding. Jasmine McElveen ’26, one of the founding members of ASIJ’s Black Student Union and a leader with ASIJ’s student ambassadors, is ASIJ’s 2026 Strength and Courage Award winner. Jasmine was recognized for her deep commitment to the ASIJ community, her leadership and dedication to create a more welcoming environment for all of ASIJ, and her refusal to accept silence in the face of bias. The American School in Japan

The American School in Japan is formed as a gakko hojin (incorporated educational institution) under Japan’s Private School Law, and is a non-profit, tax-exempt entity. The School’s primary governance documents are its Act of Endowment and Bylaws, which establish a multi-tiered governance structure involving a Board of Directors, a Board of Trustees, and two independent Statutory Auditors. While the Board of Directors meets regularly, the majority of its work is carried out by its seven committees, one of which is the Advancement Committee. We thank all of our volunteers, including the Alumni Council Giving Committee, the PTA Annual Fund Committee, and the Advancement Committee for their leadership to uphold ASIJ’s mission and values.

ENDOWMENT ASIJ’s permanently restricted endowment was established and invested in 2022. Each contribution increases the value of ASIJ’s total endowment and can be designated to support areas aligned with donors’ interests and the school’s mission. ASIJ’s endowment is a sustainable funding source that gives the school confidence to grow and improve as strategic developments and initiatives change as our world does.
