NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
A brand that can fill a booth at a trade show doesn’t necessarily mean it can fill a market. Throughout our year of participating in franchise exhibitions across Asia, the Asiawide Franchise Consultants team has consistently observed this gap. One of our key roles is to connect franchisors seeking to expand with local operators exploring franchise opportunities. Once the applause subsides, a crucial question arises: who will find suitable locations, hire the right teams, and manage the supply chain in unfamiliar markets?

101 Thomson Road, United Square Office #31-01, Singapore 307591
In most cases, the answer is a local partner investing their own capital. Typically, the partner is either a master franchisee, who develops the brand across a defined territory and may recruit sub-franchisees, or an area developer, who commits to opening a specified number of outlets within that territory. Beyond funding, that partner contributes local knowledge, market access and personal commitment. At the core of these arrangements is a simple truth: a franchise system amplifies whatever it is given. A strong brand with proven systems, support, and, in most cases, training tends to travel well; a weaker concept often carries its flaws into new markets.

Beyond the First-Tier Cities: Where China’s Franchisees Are Looking Next
The 66th Franchise China edition ran for three days in Beijing and closed on 31 May. The clearer signal, drawn from what we saw on the floor, lay in where franchisees are now looking to open.
T
he first-tier cities remain the proving ground. Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen are still where many brands earn their reputation, and franchisees understand this well. What distinguished this year was the direction those same franchisees turned once that reputation had been established. A considerable share of the interest on the floor came from franchisees in search of concepts they could carry into Tier 2, Tier 3, and the smaller markets below them, and a good number appeared prepared to commit. That, as we read it, is the widening of the map. The firsttier cities open the door, while the tiers beyond them are where much of the next wave of store growth appears set to land. The franchisees we spoke with were seeking brands with room to grow in smaller cities, where operating costs tend to be lower and a proven concept has the space to establish a base. Franchise China is organised by the China Chain Store and Franchise Association and ran from 29 to 31 May at the China National Convention Centre. Described as the country’s largest single-city franchise exhibition, it spans food and beverage, retail, education, home improvement, beauty, and early childhood care. According to figures published by the association, it counts more than 1,500 enterprise members operating upwards of 460,000 outlets, and its data places the top hundred conveniencestore chains at roughly 196,000 stores by the end of 2024, about 7.7 per cent higher than a year earlier, with 38 of those chains each running more than a thousand stores. On the association’s own numbers, a substantial part of that store growth is being added beyond the four largest cities, building upon the base the first-tier markets have laid. The franchisees we met bore out the trend. A recognised name still counted for something, yet many were looking
for brands they could operate well beyond a first-tier hub, and their questions reflected as much. They asked what a single store earns, what the training covers, whether the supply chain can reach a Tier 3 city, and what support arrives once the contract is signed. A name was enough to open the conversation; it was the answers that sustained it. One observation stayed with us. A busy stand draws a crowd, but a crowd is not a partner. In our experience, the brands that leave Beijing with a signed deal are seldom the loudest in the hall. They are the ones with someone on the floor able to turn a passing question into a conversation, and a conversation into a working relationship. This year, Asiawide Franchise Consultants brought three Singapore brands to the floor, Polar Cakes and Puffs, Great Nanyang Coffee, and Sheng Cheng, and introduced each to Chinese franchisees who are building both in the first tier and beyond it. In a market this large and this varied, what separates a stand that draws a crowd from one that begins the right conversation is the groundwork behind it. At the conference, Susan Su, Managing Director of Asiawide Franchise Consultants, spoke on the crossborder opportunities between Singapore and Chinese franchise brands. She outlined how Singapore brands can enter China by partnering with suitable local partners, and how Chinese brands can use Singapore as a base to expand into Southeast Asia. The map is widening one tier at a time, with the strength of the first tier opening the way for the markets beyond it. The brands that place their partners now will be ready as those markets open. We will see you in Beijing in 2027.

Smart Franchisees Buy the System, Not Just the Product
A
founder can perfect one outlet on personal effort. What a franchisee pays for is something else: a business that runs to standard when the founder is not in the room. Founders pitch the product. Serious franchisees buy the system. Expansion plans often quietly fail in the gap between the two. A capable operator can perfect a single location. A franchisor must do something harder: enable an independent operator to repeat that success in another city, profitably, with the founder nowhere in the room. At that point the business stops running on personal effort and starts running on its system. What a franchisor grants is a licence to use that system, and the system is therefore the product. Franchise systems that scale tend to share four traits. They are repeatable: the process holds no matter who is behind the counter. They are documented: knowledge lives in manuals rather than in the founder’s memory. They are defensible: the brand, the intellectual property and the standards are protected. And they are supportable: a franchisee is carried well past opening week. When all four hold, the gains compound. Openings become more predictable, consistency earns customer trust, and the brand negotiates its next agreement from a stronger position. A weak system is quiet at first, then loud. Outlets drift from the standard, franchisees dispute what was promised, and the founder becomes the bottleneck for every decision. Growth then stalls, rarely because demand is weak and far more often because the business cannot expand past the limits of the founder’s own time. Four components carry the load. The legal framework, meaning the disclosure documents and the franchise
agreement, sets out the rights, obligations and protections both parties rely on. The operations manual keeps every new outlet in step with the flagship. Training and support move the standard from paper into daily practice, before launch and through the audits that follow. Brand governance holds that standard steady over time. This is where doing it yourself costs the most. Templates and artificial-intelligence tools can draft a document; they cannot engineer a defensible system. Two brands with similar products may draw similar early interest, but the one built on structured systems, proper training and complete documentation is better placed to keep growing. Strong systems are engineered, and the engineering shows. The real work is therefore internal, and it comes first. The search for the right partner comes second; the system that partner will run comes first. Four questions, asked of the model rather than the market, show how far along a business is. Can it be repeated without the founder present? Is it documented well enough for a capable outsider to run to standard? Is it defensible? Can it be supported for years rather than weeks? A founder who can answer all four is no longer selling a product but offering a system, and franchisees worth having look for exactly that.

The Halal Food and Beverage Opportunity in Indonesia and Malaysia
T
wo neighbouring markets, one growing appetite: Indonesia offers the region’s largest consumer base, Malaysia a mature, export-connected halal economy. Indonesia and Malaysia are two of the largest halal markets in Southeast Asia, where dining out is a way of life. The brands that succeed build halal into how they operate rather than treating it as a sticker on the door. In Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur, halal is now the starting point for nearly every food business, from quick-service restaurants to packaged beverages, and that breadth of demand is the opportunity. Indonesia offers scale, with the world’s largest Muslim population: more than 240 million people, roughly 87 percent of the country. One industry estimate values its halal food market at around 283 billion United States dollars in 2024, projecting it to more than double to about 645 billion by 2031; Asia-Pacific, researchers estimate, accounts for roughly half of global halal food demand. Malaysia plays a different role. According to the Halal Development Corporation, halal exports rose 10.9 percent to 68.52 billion ringgit in 2025, with food and beverage the largest contributor, and the country has led the Global Islamic Economy Indicator for ten consecutive years. Behind that trade sits a certification system administered by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) and recognised well beyond its borders: Malaysia matters less for its size than for its connections. Consumers want food that is halal, fresh, safe and from a brand they trust; urban life keeps quick-service, delivery and ready-to-eat meals expanding; and halal versions of Japanese, Korean, Chinese and Western cuisine do well when properly adapted rather than relabelled. NonMuslim consumers also read halal as a mark of careful preparation, widening the market further. Certification remains part of entering either market well. The rules differ between the two countries and continue to evolve; the practical lesson is to address it early, with qualified guidance. Neither market is simply better than the other. Malaysia offers a simpler first step, with trusted certification and established trade links; Indonesia is far larger but asks for deeper adaptation and more patience. The right local partner often decides whether entry goes smoothly. The long-term case rests on rising incomes and consumers who treat halal, convenient food as an everyday norm.

T
he 2026 China Franchise Expo, held from May 29–31 at the China National Convention Centre in Beijing, was staged alongside the 2026 CCFA Franchise Conference & Service Industry Development Conference and the 2026 World Franchise Council Annual Meeting. The Expo spanned 30,000 square metres and featured more than 260 brands across food & beverage, retail, and service sectors. It attracted over 41,000 professional visitors, 200 industry speakers and guests, and 1,200 conference delegates from more than 40 countries and regions. Total online exposure exceeded 60 million impressions. Food & beverage remained the largest franchise category, accounting for 33.6% of exhibitors, followed by service providers and lifestyle services. Specialty snacks were particularly prominent, while leisure, education, training, and healthcare sectors recorded strong growth, reflecting rising consumer demand and expanding franchise opportunities. Visitor demographics: Attendees born in the 1980s & 1990s accounted for more than 70% of visitors, while experienced franchise investors represented nearly half
of all attendees. F&B, services, and retail were the most sought-after investment sectors, with over 50% targeting projects requiring less than RMB 200,000. China’s Top 300 franchise brands operated more than 1.08 million outlets in 2025, with franchised units accounting for 75.7% of the total. The number of brands with over 10,000 outlets rose to 24, while China’s restaurant chain penetration rate increased from 21% in 2023 to 25% in 2025. The event underscored the continued growth of China’s franchise sector and its increasing focus on scale, quality, digitalisation, and international expansion.

Food and Hospitality Asia 2026: The Supply Chain, Gathered in One Venue
I
nforma Markets held Food and Hospitality Asia 2026 from 21 to 24 April at Singapore Expo, filling all ten halls in what the organiser described as its biggest edition in a decade. An estimated 2,750 exhibitors took part, 80 per cent of them international, and the organiser anticipated 80,000 attendees from more than 115 countries and regions. The edition combined FHA Food and Beverage with FHA HoReCa and named the European Union as Region of Honour. Mr Alvin Tan, Minister of State for Trade and Industry, was announced as Guest of Honour; Senior Minister of State Low Yen Ling opened the show, naming global connectivity, sustainability and innovation as the sector’s priorities. For franchise businesses, the format mattered as much as the scale: behind every franchise agreement sits a supply chain that must hold up outlet after outlet, and this year ingredients, kitchen equipment, foodservice technology and hospitality solutions sat in one venue across eighteen segments: an operator could walk the entire back end of the business in a single visit. The floor conversations turned on exactly that. Expanding brands asked about supply consistency across markets, halal certification, a segment the organiser spotlighted this year, and the technology in the new FutureFWD area: the systems that keep quality steady once a founder cannot stand in every kitchen. These questions decide whether the tenth outlet resembles the first. More than 38 per cent of exhibitors were first-time participants, a useful signal for franchisors: a supplier met here may be new to the region, its cross-border consistency untested. The question for the follow-up meeting is not how the sample tasted, but whether the same specification arrives in Jakarta and Ho Chi Minh City, in the same condition, in month thirty. Figures cited by the organiser project Asia’s food and
beverage market to surpass US$3.3 trillion by 2034 and the hospitality sector to reach US$181.2 billion by 2029: projections, not audited outcomes, and a share of that growth will go to brands that replicate well. For franchisors weighing expansion, the suppliers and systems settled now tend to shape how smoothly the next markets open.

Franchise Asia Philippines 2026: The System Is the Passport 2026

T
he Philippine Franchise Association organised Franchise Asia Philippines 2026 from 24 to 26 April at the SMX Convention Center Manila, the international conference opening on 23 April. More than 1,000 local and international brands exhibited across food, retail, service and allied categories, while country pavilions from Thailand, Singapore, Korea and Australia and an ASEAN Journey plenary gave the event its cross-border character. What stayed with us was how specific the questions were. Prospective franchisees and existing operators arrived with a budget in mind and asked about singleoutlet economics, post-signing support and the timeline to opening. In our observation, preparation before the event tends to shape how far a first conversation travels. The theme points to the question facing many concepts in the region, Filipino brands among them. Growth beyond the home market draws on documentation a partner can follow independently, an operating standard that transfers intact, and a structure that runs without the founder present. Together those parts make a franchise system, and building one is ordinary developmental work. The Philippines has an estimated population of 117.7 million, and its franchising sector is estimated at 1,800 to 2,000 brands with more than 200,000 outlets nationwide, roughly 55 percent local and 45 percent foreign: a market with depth on both sides of the counter. For a franchisor weighing entry, Manila in April offered a plain reading: the visitors came prepared. A brand considering the market might ask the same of its own system: the partner and structure chosen now tend to set the limits on how far the brand travels later.

The Real Work Happens Before the Show: Malaysia International Franchise Exhibition 2026
F
ranchise International Malaysia 2026 ran from 21 to 23 May at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, organised by the Malaysian Franchise Association with the Ministry of Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development. The association set the 2026 edition on a target of around 600 million ringgit in potential investment, up from 424 million a year earlier, and anticipated some 25,000 visitors across more than 250 booths and over 100 local and overseas exhibitors. A show of that scale rewards preparation. In our experience, a productive conversation at a franchise exhibition tends to rest on three questions: what a unit costs to open, how the franchisee is supported once it opens, and how long it takes to repay the investment. Those three figures are, in most cases, the minimum a prospective franchisee needs to raise finance, and the minimum an investor needs to weigh one opportunity against another. An exhibition amplifies the momentum a brand brings through the door; it rarely creates it. That preparation is best completed before the doors open rather than assembled on the day. The brands that generally do well at these shows are rarely the ones with the busiest stands. More often, they are the ones ready with the numbers when the right question is asked.

Indonesia’s Franchise Buyers Are Seeking Brands with Proven Systems
T
he 26th edition of Indonesia’s largest franchise show closed with a clear message from the floor: buyers were not shopping for ideas; they were shopping for systems. The visitors who filled the halls wanted proven international brands and franchise structures strong enough to take the guesswork out of their own investment. Organised by Panorama Media, the FLEI Business Show 2026 ran from 7 to 10 May at the Jakarta International Expo (JIExpo) Kemayoran, alongside the Cafe n’ Brasserie Expo and the MoreFood Expo, with a single entry pass. More than 150 brands exhibited across food and beverage, retail, education, beauty, and services. The opening drew representatives from the Ministry of Trade, the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, KADIN Indonesia, and the national franchise and licensing association, WALI. What the four days in Kemayoran showed is that Indonesian buyers are past the window-shopping stage. The brands that could explain how the model works, what the franchisor actually provides, and how quickly a partner can recover the investment did the most business. For an experienced operator, the real risk was never the market. It was choosing the wrong brand, or a system that could not support them once the doors opened. A wellbuilt franchise system is precisely what removes that risk, and the buyers in Kemayoran knew it. WALI chairperson Levita Ginting Supit captured the mood, noting that franchising remains relevant precisely because
the system is ready to use and the risk is measurable. That is the appeal of a proven brand: a professional who wants a business without building it from scratch is buying the training, the supply chain, and the operating discipline that a strong franchisor has already tested elsewhere. None of this is surprising in a market of more than 280 million consumers, where micro, small, and medium enterprises contribute over 60 per cent of national output. For international franchisors weighing an entry, there is a second window this year. The 27th edition moves to the Nusantara International Convention Exhibition (NICE) at PIK 2 from 9 to 11 October 2026, and this edition carries an International Business Summit built specifically to connect Indonesian operators with overseas brands. The demand side has made its intentions plain. The brands that can show a system worth trusting will decide who is ready for it.

Ministry of Trade、Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises、Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) 以及 Indonesian Franchise and Licensing Association (WALI) 等机构代表,皆在开幕式上现身,足见各界 对这一业态的重视程度。 Indonesian Franchise and Licensing Association (WALI)

THAIFEX – Anuga Asia 2026: The Supply Chain Is the Anchor of Franchising
A
t its largest edition to date, Asia’s leading food and beverage marketplace put manufacturers and food-technology suppliers in front of the operators who need them. For franchisors, that was the point of going. The most useful thing at THAIFEX – Anuga Asia 2026 was often not the product on the sampling tray. It was the company behind it: the manufacturer, the co-packer, the food-technology supplier whose quality, price and minimum order quantity quietly determine whether a concept can open in ten cities and taste the same in each. Scale gave that question weight. Held from 26 to 30 May 2026 at IMPACT Muang Thong Thani in Bangkok, the fair ran for the first time across the venue’s full Halls 1 to 12, drawing 3,590 exhibiting companies across 6,710 booths from Thailand and 56 other countries and territories. Of those exhibitors, 2,205 were international, and 1,385 were Thai. The organiser reported 158,243 visitors, including 94,685 trade visitors across the business days and 63,558 members of the public on the retail day, and put the total trade value generated at 136.54 billion baht. Structured as nine specialised trade shows — drinks, fine food, seafood, frozen, meat, food technology, sweets and confectionery, fruits and vegetables, and rice — the fair allowed a brand to compare suppliers across categories inside a single week. For franchising, the lesson concerned what had stopped being optional rather than what was new. Halal was carried across a dedicated showcase and the Thai Halal Pavilion, and now tends to read as a baseline for any concept crossing the region. Clean label sat among the eleven trend zones alongside alternative foods and organic, which suggests buyers are writing those terms into sourcing as a matter of routine rather than as a premium request. The food-technology halls held the most for us. Food Technology ranked among the five most sought-after categories, according to the organiser. A chef’s instinct
does not travel; a specification does, and processing and packaging equipment is where one becomes the other. What a line can hold to, at what price and at what minimum order quantity, bears on whether a franchise system can be replicated across several markets or only one.

The Taichung Franchise Expo
F
eaturing over 100 brands and showcasing entrepreneurial opportunities worth up to NT$2 billion, ignited a startup boom during the May Day holiday. The “2026 Taiwan Franchise and Startup Expo – Taichung” was held for four days starting May 1st at the Taichung International Convention Center. The organizer, the Association of Chain & Franchise Promotion Taiwan, stated that this year’s expo brought together over 110 brands and nearly 300 booths, covering sectors such as food and beverage, retail, equipment, and AI-powered smart entrepreneurship. It is estimated to attract over 1,100 exhibitors, creating 5,000 jobs, and generate an overall business opportunity of NT$2 billion. Paul Wu, Chairman of the Association, pointed out that the franchise industry is a crucial pillar of Taiwan’s domestic economy and an important platform for youth entrepreneurship and SME development. In addition to showcasing entrepreneurial opportunities in the food and beverage, retail, and service industries, the expo also revealed a growing trend towards smarter, less labour-intensive, and more systematic business models. The range of models, including high-turnover catering, low-threshold small-capital entrepreneurship, and AI equipment and unmanned retail, reflects the increasingly diversified development of the entrepreneurial market.
