ATJ FOUNDATION In 1998, we founded ATJF (the Asia Transpacific Journeys Foundation, formerly the Asia Transpacific Foundation) as a way to give back to the communities that offer us so much during our travels. Our philanthropic stewardship initiatives throughout Asia and the Pacific are carefully assessed to ensure they meet the same high standards of accountability, cultural sensitivity and grassroots philosophy championed by our approach to travel. We encourage our travelers and staff to regularly visit our projects in person to strengthen the personal connection that has always been at the heart of our efforts. In addition to our individual projects, our Emergency Relief fund allows us to efficiently respond to natural disasters and other unanticipated emergencies throughout the region. Our long-term partnerships with our in-country partners make it possible to directly funnel these monies into communities that need it most. We are immensely proud that our swift distribution of funds and supplies have saved countless lives during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, 2008 Cyclone Nargis and the 2015 Nepal Earthquake. One hundred percent of all donations from our travelers go directly toward our overseas initiatives. All administrative costs of managing the foundation are paid by ATJ.

I travel to remove myself from daily life, to step out of the mundane, to be a global citizen, with my eyes and heart open. I wander to release stress, to soften the edges of humanity and to be more open on my return. I try to bring a sense of wander home with me and in to my daily life, if only for a little while.

As a child, I dreamed of becoming an astronaut, but decided that exploring the world and its various cultures would be just as exciting. I began leading tours worldwide until I discovered my current ideal situation: a career requiring frequent destination research. Now I'm on a new adventure, traveling with my own children to new and exciting destinations and seeing the world through their eyes. My extensive travels in our region over decades make me an unsurpassed resource for crafting extraordinary itineraries. My expertise has been acknowledged by Travel+Leisure magazineâ€”I was selected as an A-List Travel Specialist 2012, 2013, 2016 and 2017.

I became hooked on travel after spending a year of high school in a small Spanish province bordering Morocco. I studied Environmental Biology earning my degree at CU Boulder. A musical streak culminated in a performance with Liza Minnelli and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and a penchant for travel manifested itself in years spent guiding around the U.S. I fell for Asia during extensive travels in the region, capturing its people and places in photos. I revel in sharing my deep first-hand knowledge and was named a CondĂŠ Nast Traveler Top Travel Specialist for 2007. I am further distinguished by being included on Travel + Leisure's exclusive A-List of top travel specialists in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017.

My entire adult life has been devoted to traveling, and arranging travel to the Asia/Pacific Region. I'm passionate about the people I've met and the experiences I've helped curate for others. I want to get lost. I want to experience something so different from what I experience on a day-to-day basis. I wander to keep my eyes open and learn and educate myself. I wander to find hidden gems in this world that fascinate and surprise me. I wander because I cherish a new adventure, especially when I can share that adventure with others. I am proud to be included on Travel + Leisure's exclusive A-List of top travel specialists in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019; as well as in CondĂŠ Nast in 2007.

I was majoring in Wildlife Biology before a study abroad program in New Zealand presented a fork in the road, and choosing travel, I've never looked back. I graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in Eco Tourism and have since traveled to over 50 countries, absorbing deep firsthand knowledge of Asia and beyond. My continued affinity for all things wild led to a stint as a tour leader for the World Wildlife Fund on their lauded snorkeling tours in Micronesia. In addition I spent a great deal of time in Sri Lanka, developing ATJ's product and acting as tour escort for private special interest groups to Sri Lanka. When not pulling together dazzling itineraries for my travelers, I can be found coaching and competing at Boulder CrossFit and CrossFit Untapped as well as spending time with my family and friends rock climbing, skiing and exploring.

My passion for travel started when I studied abroad in Costa Rica. I finished my degree in Sociology and knew I wanted to get into the travel industry. Since then my career and passion has been Asia. I've spent my entire adult life studying, traveling and learning about this amazing part of the world. It is my passion and an absolute joy to work at ATJ and spend my days setting up unique and fulfilling travel to my favorite places on earth.

The aroma of turmeric and cumin dances in the air, hinting at delicious culinary treats from a nearby food stall. While street food differs greatly across Asian countries and even across cities in the same country, there are commonalities to this particular food approach. There is no greater culturally immersive experience than exploring the flavors and food favorites of a region and doing it exactly as the locals do. It’s a pathway to witnessing talented street chefs who make the most of local produce, spices, seafood and meats. It’s a window into food that may be as ubiquitous to locals as pizza is to you, but are preparations that are generations old and virtually inseparable from a region’s cultural identity. It’s also a glimpse into the social impact of food on a culture, especially given that street food is often enjoyed with friends and family or co-workers after work. Engage your senses by taking a tour of some of favorite street food scenes:

SRI LANKA For something savory, try a samosa. The breakfast 'string-hopper' is a local favorite! Sri Lanka may be a tiny nation roughly the size of West Virginia, but its food packs a flavorful punch. Somewhat similar to Indian food, yet spicier and lighter, Sri Lankan cuisine’s seafood-forward and vegetarian-friendly variety is best enjoyed during street food exploration where you can sample the nation’s classics. Sri Lanka’s capital city, Colombo, is a mecca for the nation’s culinary specialties. Try a samosa (fried pastry with savory fillings) with a creamy curry, often found at various food stalls. You also won’t want to miss out on the nation’s most popular breakfast, string hoppers - a pancake-like bowl often served with egg, dhal and other sauces.

THAILAND For something beyond pad thai, try moo ping or ba mee and a glass of cha yen. To us, there’s no utterance of Bangkok that doesn’t conjure up visions of its world famous street food. While the dizzying array of food options, electric energy and throngs of locals and tourists alike may be initially intimidating, a guided street food tour can help break the ice. When exploring the street food scene in Thailand, venture beyond the traditional pad thai to explore grilled meats on a stick like moo ping (grilled pork), sweet treats like khao niao mamuang (mango sticky rice), tom yum goong (spicy prawn soup) and ba mee (Thai wonton noodles with shredded pork.) If it’s hot out, chill off with cha yen, a creamy Thai iced-tea.

VIETNAM Being the pho capital of the world, this broth bowl is a must – and a Báhn Mi can't be beat. Vietnam’s two largest cities, Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) and Hanoi, are situated at opposite ends of the nation and both have distinct differences in local culinary treasures. While Hanoi tends to elevate traditional Vietnamese cuisine, you’ll find a lot of foreign influence (especially French) in Ho Chi Minh City’s local street food culture. Regardless of where you eat, the red and blue plastic chairs dotting Vietnamese sidewalks as make-shift restaurants is a quintessential element of many curb-sides throughout the country. The national dish of Vietnam, pho (noodles served in a savory and sweet beef broth) can generally be found anywhere, but Hanoi is the home of this Vietnamese delight. You’ll find hawkers serving pho in many street food areas, each presenting their own version of a savory, sweet and aromatic pho broth. While in Hanoi, you’ll want to try out bia hoi which means fresh beer and also refers to the roadside stands where the brews are enjoyed. The brews are light in alcohol at 3% or less, but they’re generally 25 cents or less per glass. Keep an eye out for bun cha (pork barbecued on an open-air coal grill), bánh mì (a baguette filled with meats and Vietnamese condiments) and bánh tráng nướng (affectionately known as the Vietnamese pizza.) Lastly, don’t forget to try Vietnamese coffee. Strong, thick and often served with sweetened condensed milk, it’s a tasty treat and morning pick-me-up rolled into one.

SINGAPORE Eat like a local by trying the Hainanese chicken rice. For breakfast, go with kaya on toast. The ultra-modern city-state of Singapore may seem like an unlikely backdrop for street food, but its permanent food stalls and hawker centers are a testament to the impact of street food in Singaporean heritage. Singaporeans take street food so seriously, several hawkers stalls have even earned the coveted Michelin Star award, along with the bragging rights of the cheapest meals possible at any Michelin Star-rated restaurant in the world. If you find yourself in Singapore, sample the Hainanese chicken rice, generally considered Singapore’s national dish. For something with a little more sizzle, you’ll find char kway teow (flat rice noodles stir-fried in a wok at searing temperatures) at many hawker stalls. For a traditional Singaporean breakfast experience that tastes a bit closer to home, try kaya (a jam made with sugar, egg and coconut) over some toast as you enjoy a cup of coffee or tea.

Given regional differences in cuisine that are as different as night and day, summarizing India’s street food culture into a few paragraphs is virtually impossible. Ranging from meat-centric, vibrant vegetarian, seafood-heavy, buttery-thick curries to magical dals made from dried, split pulses, the term Indian food is a truly inadequate description of the nation’s varied regional cuisine. The good news? You’re in store for one of the most exciting street food cultures on the planet.

A stroll through Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh, would be remiss without sampling delicious street food. This task is made so much easier with the abundance of food vendors dotting just about every street throughout the city.

In Rajasthan’s palace and fort-laden royal cities of Jaipur and Udaipur, you’ll no doubt find a plethora of authentic Rajasthani street food. Delectable street snacks, often referred to as chaat, are often a marriage of differing textures and tastes. These range from kaathi rolls (a wrap with shawarma chicken), golgappa (a crispy wheat ball filled with chutney, potato, chickpeas or onion), aloo tikki (spiced potato pancakes) and dahi vada (fried dumplings with a yogurt sauce.)

While you’ll find skewered pork grilled over charcoal and steamed pork buns just to be a common offering in many food stalls, fish amok, an authentic Khmer snack of fish wrapped in a banana leaf and cooked with curry, lemongrass, turmeric and lime, is an absolute must try. If you’re prone to taking a walk on the culinary wild side, balut is a pure dive into the deep end of the food pool. On its surface, balut appears to be a standard duck egg. Inside, you’ll find the fertilized embryo of a duck. Often served with herbs and vinegar, balut is a popular street food snack throughout Cambodia.

If you’re looking to quench your thirst, lassi (a yogurt drink often flavored with spices or fruit) or masala chai (strong black tea with aromatic spices and herbs) will satisfy.

INDONESIA Sweet lovers should seek out martabak manis. With nearly 300 distinct ethnic groups residing in Indonesia, its complex cuisine is heavily influenced by China, India, the Middle East and even Europe. This eclectic combination, along with an Indonesian penchant for spices, produces some of the most flavorful street food in the world. You’ll undoubtedly find the popular kerak telor, a charcoal grilled frittata made of egg and glutinous rice, topped with crispy shallot, dried shrimp and shredded coconut. To satisfy your sweet tooth, look for martabak manis – a soft pancake packed with a variety of sweet condiments like Nutella, chocolate, condensed milk and peanuts.

MYANMAR One can't go wrong with Shan noodles, or some koh può for a savory snack. In the largest city of Myanmar (formerly Burma), a population of over 7 million is fueled by a robust street food culture. Myanmar’s food diversity is driven by 135 distinct ethnic groups calling the nation home. In addition, the influence of bordering nations like China, India, Laos, Thailand and Bangladesh are readily apparent in Burmese street food as evidenced by breakfast foods like e kya kway which is similar to Chinese youtiao, a breakfast churro made from dough that is deep-fried. Skewered meats are often common fare in many street food vendor areas, but it’s the regional food like Shan noodles, a specialty from the Shan state in the eastern part of Myanmar that consists of rice noodles and pork simmered with tomatoes that wows us every time. Other street food treats include mont lin ma yar (muffin-sized rice cakes popularly known as “husband and wife snacks”) and koh può (charcoal-grilled glutinous rice cakes that are savory.)

A slight rustling of silver oak trees in Nagarhole National Park’s lush, jungle canopy is seen by an eagle-eyed guide. He slows his jeep to a stop as he scans the jungle for a sign of the elusive creature. His gaze affixes on an outcropping of teak trees in the distance. Is this it? Could he have finally found the rare melanistic leopard of India? Whatever your wildlife passion, the continent of Asia offers some of the most diverse wildlife exploration of any other continent on the planet. Illegal hunting and wildlife trade have impacted many species, but the government has established 20 national parks that protect nearly 14% of the country’s land. In addition, ecotourism and educated wildlife watchers have had a positive influence on the protection of these habitats and local wildlife.

Don’t let Sri Lanka’s diminutive size fool you, this island nation is an ideal destination for wildlife, marine-life and bird watchers of all stripes. Sri Lanka also has one of the highest rates of wildlife endemism in the world.

In some of the most remote corners of the world, there are tribal ethnic groups and remote peoples who continue to live in harmony not only with nature, but also with their ancestral ways of life despite a rapidly changing world that engulfs their societies. Many of these groups have chosen self-isolation and have resisted outside influences of change. Ultimately, the result is a proud people who have preserved and maintained their ancient cultures. You don’t have to look further than Asia to find these tribes.

VIETNAM The Hmong people. Located 215 miles from Hanoi, the small mountainous village of Sapa is tucked into the northwestern corner of Vietnam near the Chinese border. Sapa has long enjoyed an isolation which has helped to preserve the culture of various ethnic hill tribes who inhabit the region. The Hmong people, one of most prominent of five ethnic groups in Sapa (the others being Xa Pho, Giay, Tay and Dao), are believed to have immigrated from China nearly 300 years ago, making their ethnicity distinctly different from the Vietnamese population. The Hmong are easy to spot among the rolling hills of Sapa. Attired in colorful indigo-dyed hemp cloth, blouses adorned with batik flowers, leg-wraps, aprons, long scarves and hair intertwined with multi-colored turbans, the ornate nature of traditional Hmong costume is such that you might assume villagers were dressed up to attract tourists. Travel deeper into the region, you’ll find the traditional attire to actually be worn by all – boys, girls, women and men alike. The Hmong people are noted for their beautiful sewing and embroidery which uses a technique called Batik Painting, the application of melted beeswax on cloth to paint negative areas that resist dye soaking.

MYANMAR The Kayan tribes. Perhaps one of the most recognized hill tribes in all of Asia; the Kayan tribes are known for elongating their necks with stacked brass rings, even though it’s only a small sub-set of Kayan people (specifically, the Kayan Lahwi tribe) who perform this practice. In the tribes that practice this ritual, Kayan girls are outfitted with brass coils as early as 5 years of age. It’s believed that the coils serve a variety of purposes that includes protection from tiger attacks and a beautification process that produces a neck bearing resemblance to that of a dragon, a revered creature in Kayan mythology. Residing mostly in the Shan state of Myanmar, Kayan are welcoming people and their daily way of life can be observed by those interested in learning more about their culture. 28

Many of China’s ethnic hill tribes reside in southern mountainous regions such as Sichuan Province and neighboring Yunnan and Chendu Provinces which border Northern Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar. Yunnan province alone is home to more than 25 ethnic minorities who include the Yi, Bai, Hani, Dai, Miao, Lisu and many more.

If cultural immersion with intriguing tribes is your cup of tea, you’ll find the whole tea kettle in Papua New Guinea. Situated on the eastern side of one of the largest islands in the world, Papua New Guinea’s diverse geography includes mountains, wetlands, grassland plains and rainforests. It’s a lush landscape bustling with vegetation, wildlife and natural resources and as a result, tribes that have long inhabited the island have flourished.

These ethnic minorities coexist harmoniously with their natural environment while maintaining their traditions and cultural identity in a country that is largely aimed at rapid modernization. Travel through this area is an immersion in generations-old lifestyles, vibrantly colored attire and culturally poignant festivals like the Bai ethnic group’s annual Rao San Ling Festival which features Bai people adorned in traditional ceremonial costume, singing and dancing while praying for good harvest at temple. Across the nation, you’ll find tribes like the Huli Wigmen of the Southern Highlands. Some tribesmen have noses pierced with fine bones, while others have painted faces and oiled chests. But, it’s the widespread presence of ornate wigs that will snag your attention. Often decorated with their own hair, tropical bird feathers and plants, the wigs add extraordinary flare to the Huli Wigmen’s regular ceremonies which include chanting and song.

LAOS The Akha people. In the mountains of northern Laos, you’ll find the Akha people. While this ethnic hill tribe originated in Yunnan Province of southern China, Many Akha have migrated south into bordering Laos. The oral literature of Akha people conveys a sense of ancestral worship, animism and connection with nature and the environment that goes well beyond religion. Akha beliefs and rituals permeate every fissure of an Akha person’s existence and can be seen during the Akha’s annual “Swing Festival”, a four-day celebration that revolves around ritual offerings to ancestors. While Akha dress can be relatively colorful, it’s the headdresses worn by Akha women which are most brilliantly flamboyant. They are often decorated with coins, beads, shells, fur, dyed feathers and other eclectic accouterments.

BORNEO The Kadazandusun indigenous tribe. In the northern part of Borneo, the Kadazandusun (or Dusun) indigenous tribe calls Sabah home. Traditionally rice farmers, the Dusun cultivate hillsides and maintain water buffalo. Their unique belief system is rooted in the cognition that the land – including trees, rivers and rocks – are all living things. Deeply superstitious, the Dusun hold monthly festivals to pacify and worship spirits for protection. They are also known for interfacing with the spirit world through bobohizan (priestesses) to encourage bountiful harvests.
