THE United States this week has reaffirmed its support for the Philippines in its efforts to combat terrorism. In a message for the commemoration of the Philippines’ 119th Independence Day on Monday, June 12, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that Washington “proudly stands” with the
Philippines in its anti-terrorism operations in Marawi City in Lanao del Sur, Mindanao. For the past three weeks, the Philippine military has been conducting clearing and rescue operations since the Maute extremist group attacked Marawi City. This has prompted Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte to declare martial law in the Mindanao. Since May 23, the military
has estimated the death toll to be at least 26 civilians, 202 militants, and 58 individuals from the government forces. “The United States proudly stands with the Philippines as a longstanding ally, especially as the country confronts challenges associated with terrorism and extremism, including recent attacks in Marawi City and elsewhere,”

Filipinos among injured Mother of Maute extremist leaders faces rebellion charges in London tower fire THE Philippine Embassy in London has confirmed that Filipinos were among those injured and affected by the massive fire that engulfed the 24-story Grenfell Tower in the British capital on Wednesday, June 14. “A number of them are in the emergency shelters at St Clement’s Church, the St Francis of Assisi Church, and the Portobello Rugby Club on Walmer,” the embassy said in a statement without further specifying the number. As of press time, authorities confirmed 12 casualties but warned the number may rise “during what will be a complex recovery operation over a number of days.”
More than 200 firefighters battled the inferno, which broke out past midnight when most residents were asleep. Witnesses described seeing people jumping out of the tower and children being thrown off the windows with hopes that people from below will catch them. He further remarked, “If I think that the IS has already taken foothold also in Luzon, and terrorism is not really far behind, I might declare martial law throughout the country to protect the people.” Continued decisiveness On Tuesday, June 13, Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella vowed that the government would respond to terror threats “with continued decisiveness.” “The fight will continue. We will not stop until it’s finished,” Abella told reporters. Earlier, a voice recording, apparently from Islamic State spokesman Aboulhassan al-Mouhajer, urged jihadists to to launch attacks in different nations, including the Philippines and the United States during Ramadan, which began on May 26. In celebration of the country’s 119th Independence Day, the Philippine government planted a national flag on the Philippine Rise, formerly known as Benham Rise. The Philippine navy raised the underwater flag on Monday, June 12 as a symbol of the country’s sovereignty over the waters. “This underwater marker serves as a symbol of Philippine sovereign rights over the Philippine Rise, which shall forever be under the vigilant watch of the Filipino people,” the marker of the flag’s base read. Another Philippine flag was simultaneously placed above the navy’s newest and largest ship, BRP Davao del Sur, which conducted a sovereign patrol in the area. “We gather from all walks of
life to put up the most powerful symbol, driven by passion of our collective cause, to re-echo our sovereignty over the Philippine rise,” northern Luzon Command chief Lt. Gen. Romeo Tanalgo said in a speech. Under Executive Order no.25, President Rodrigo Duterte officially renamed “Benham Rise” to “Philippine Rise” in a bid to uphold the country’s sovereign rights following reports that Chinese ships were spotted in the area. DOT: Slogan still ‘It’s More Fun in the Philippines’ RESPOnDInG to criticisms and plagiarism accusations, Department of Tourism (DOT), Undersecretary for Advocacy and Public Affairs Katherine De Castro clarified that the recently launched campaign video, “Experience Philippines,” is not the official Philippine tourism slogan. “It’s just that meron kaming naisip together with our ad agency na kumbaga bagayin yung ipapalabas naming bagong commercial,” (It’s just that we, together with our ad agency thought of a slogan that would go well with the new commercial), De Castro explained. DOT clarified that the “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” slogan will still be used in tourism campaigns. De Castro explained that “with all the bad images being portrayed in the news about the Philippines, she felt the need for another slogan that would encourage tourists to experience the country for themselves. It was in August last year that DOT announced the need to
change the Department’s slogan, explaining that creating a new slogan is nothing new when there’s a new administration leading the country. This plan of DOT received negative reactions from tourism industry stakeholders. “Being a tourism industry veteran, I think the country slogan shouldn’t be changed every administration; it takes time for the brand or the campaign slogan to achieve its maximum potential. It’s only now that ‘It’s More Fun in the Philippines’ has gained acceptability here and abroad. The new ad, which was released on Monday, June 12, had reached over 1.9 million views on Facebook as of 5:00 a.m on Wednesday, June 14. AS FILIPINOS celebrated their nation’s 119th Independence Day on Monday, June 12, the U.S. congratulated the Philippines and emphasized the enduring U.S.-PH alliance built on “shared democratic values, growing commerce, and strong people-to-people ties.” “The United States proudly stands with the Philippines as a longstanding ally, especially as the country confronts challenges associated with terrorism and extremism, including recent attacks in Marawi City and elsewhere. We admire the resilience and strength of Filipino people in battling adversity and building a more prosperous and secure future,” Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson said on behalf of President Donald Trump and the American people. The revelries across the Philippines were marred by moments of silence offered to the fallen men and women who were killed in the ongoing conflict in Marawi City. The military operation aimed to crush Maute rebels in Marawi City, which is now in its fourth week, has left over 200 people dead, including 191 terrorists, 29 civilians and close to 60 security forces, the military reported. The siege forced Pres. Rodrigo Duterte to place Mindanao under martial law. Echoing Tillerson’s statement, U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim assured that the U.S. would provide counterterrorism support for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) during this ordeal.
“This is a cooperation that has continued for some time now. It’s a cooperation that’s appreciated by the Philippines’ military. It’s a cooperation that has continued with the knowledge of the Philippines’ government,” Kim said. Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana confirmed that U.S. military advisors stationed in Zamboanga City have provided a surveillance plane to identify the location of Maute fighters, as well as to train Filipino soldiers, and for the past weeks gave some pieces of equipment to the Philippine Marines involved in the operation to flush out other Islamist gunmen in Marawi City. Lt. General Carlito Galvez, Western Mindanao Command Chief, added that American troops have supported their Filipino counterparts in capability enhancement, counterterrorism and humanitarian assistance civic actions. Duterte thanked the U.S. for its support of the Marawi City offensive but clarified that he did not appeal for any assistance. While legal analysts say Trump cannot do this as the law mandates that the special counsel can only be appointed and fired by the Office of the Attorney General and NOT by the president, this news just all the more highlights the nagging question as to why Trump has been demonizing the investigation. He has even called it a “witch hunt” and a tactic “used by the obstructionist Democrats
who cannot accept and move on from the loss of Hillary Clinton”. Trump has over and over again professed his innocence on allegations raised against him and his campaign but both the bipartisan Senate and House intelligence committees, the DOJ, FBI and other U.S. intelligence agencies have found reasons and basis to push the investigation forward because at the core of this probe is to protect the integrity of the democratic institutions that Russia has been trying (and succeeding) to meddle in. The ongoing probe investigates if indeed the Trump
campaign colluded with the Russians to help Trump win. If Trump is innocent as he claims he is, then he should be helping, or better yet, he should be pushing to get to the bottom of this grave assault on our democracy. This will also help him clear his name and will make him focus on governing without this cloud of doubt hovering over him. He said in a news conference last Friday, June 9, that he would be cooperating 100 percent with the investigation and would be willing to give his testimony under oath to prove his innocence. Then, he should match his words with his actions.

Getting caught flatfooted Street Talk GreG B. MacaBenta IT looks like we will not yet see the end of the speculation and argument over whether the Resorts World incident was a terrorist attack or one perpetrated by a despondent gambler. While forensic amateurs, Facebook detectives and the sensationalist media are fanning the embers of intrigue and conspiracy, Resorts World lawyers and the government of President Rodrigo Duterte may be holding fast to one theory or the other for reasons of ultimate accountability and corresponding financial damages. However, I think we should view with skepticism the claim of ISIS that they had something to do with the incident. There is an obvious propaganda payoff for ISIS if people were to believe the panicky reports of CNN and the usual mindless remarks of President Donald Trump. Mind you, it could have been the handiwork of one single independent terrorist – but it stretches credibility to attribute the clumsy effort to ISIS. If ISIS had something to do with it, its evil masterminds should be ashamed of their amateurish work. At any rate, If it was a terrorist attack, then the principle of force majeure could come into play and free the owners of Resort World from a heavy financial burden (even a criminal burden). On the other hand, if it was the handiwork of a lone gunman,
the owners of the casino and hotel will have to answer many uncomfortable questions, and be accountable for damages, particularly the claims of the families of the fatalities. Why was security so lax? How could a man carrying a weapon have gotten past the security guards unchallenged? Why were the fire prevention systems and the corresponding safety systems not operational – or were there any at all? In any case, the Philippine National Police will also have to explain why their response to the crisis was so reminiscent of the Keystone Kops and the Luneta carnage, during the early months of the tenure of President Benigno Aquino III. If the PNP could not adequately cope with the act of one lone criminal, how in heaven’s name can General Bato’s Finest face a terrorist blitz? In contrast, in the recent terrorist attack in London, the police responded within eight minutes and killed the three identifiable perpetrators (the authorities are still looking into the possible involvement of others). I frankly think that it is irrelevant for ordinary citizens like us whether or not the Resorts World tragedy was an act of terrorism or an act of desperation by a debt-ridden gambler. Let the lawyers fight that out in court. What is relevant to us is the confidence that we can have in the ability of the authorities and the management of public facilities to ensure our safety – or to act with dispatch and efficiency in the event of a crisis. Whether we like it or not, we are now living in a world fraught
with dangers and every time we venture into the streets and mingle with large crowds, we are all fair game for a lone, demented killer or a band of suicide bombers. I really find it ridiculous to watch the near-robotic efforts of security guards at shopping malls to check incoming vehicles for explosives. With a mirror attached to a pole, they pretend to check under the vehicles (I swear the guards don’t even bother to look) and, having done their routine, they signal the drivers to move on. You are almost tempted to tell the security guards that there is a bomb hidden in a bag inside the car – except that jokes like that can get you into serious trouble (I can’t even say Hi to my son-in-law at an airport, because his name is Jack). Admittedly, it is extremely difficult to anticipate a criminal or terrorist attack and just as difficult to ensure the safety of people in a crowded place, but there are ways of minimizing the dangers. We should assume that the intelligence agents of the military and the police are embedded in sensitive areas to enable them to sense suspicious activities and send out the necessary red flags. I recall that during the Marcos regime, military intelligence had innocuous people planted in local government offices and barangays to sniff out furtive acts of cadres and suspected sympathizers. This is probably SOP up to now. Following the bombing incident before the opening of the XXVI Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia in 1996, I proceeded with my

trip to the games, reassuring my wife that the venue would be the safest place in America. True enough, there was not one corner in the venues not covered by security personnel. The question is, how welltrained are the PNP and military for terrorist incidents, such as those that have hit France and England in recent months? The other question is, how trained are civilians for such incidents? During the Japanese occupation, townsfolk were trained to rush to the nearest air raid shelters or foxholes at the sound of an air attack, which was usually followed by bombings. Shouldn’t there be a similar contingency exercise?
Apparently, there was not even a fire alarm contingency plan in place at Resorts World. What about the other casinos and hotels in Metro Manila and the big provincial cities? There are those who will protest that such emergency plans could have a negative effect on tourism and cause undue anxiety among the citizenry. Well, let me assure these worriers that word has already spread around the world warning folks against danger spots like Manila and Mindanao, as well as cities in Europe. Isn’t it better to be prepared than sorry? I first learned about the Resorts World incident from my sister. She phoned me from
Maryland, anxiously asking if I was in Manila because “Manila is under attack by terrorists.” She had picked up the frightful news from CNN. I really think that scaring off tourists should be the least of our worries, although Philippine media should act more responsibly. What CNN did may have been the equivalent of shouting, “Fire!” in a crowded theater. Nevertheless, the safety of the citizenry should be given priority. That’s just too bad for our tourism industry. The Resorts World incident clearly caught the management and the authorities flatfooted. They should not allow that to happen again. n

“It is not his credibility at stake. It’s the credibility of the institution.” this is what Philippine Vice President Leni Robredo stressed on tuesday, June 13, as she criticized Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II over his recent remarks linking opposition senators to the Marawi crisis. She warned that the public’s trust in the institution will be lost if the justice secretary continues to make “false accusations.” “We have a Department of Justice whose head is saying things that are not true. I think it’s scary because it’s the Department of Justice that is supposed to lead in making sure justice will prevail over all of us,” Robredo told reporters in Batangas. Last week, the justice secretary came under fire after using an old photo and insinuating that several opposition lawmakers met with local prominent clans — whom he identified as Alonto and Lucman — weeks before the clash between the government troopers and Maute
terrorist group erupted on May 23 in Marawi City. Aguirre said that there is a possibility that the meeting could have “sparked the terroristic acts,” tagging Senators Aquino and Antonio trillanes IV, Magdalo party-list Rep. Gary Alejano and former Aquino administration presidential political adviser Ronald Llamas, He also suggested that the Marawi incident could be part of destabilization plot against President Rodrigo Duterte. Later, however, Aguirre, retracted his remarks, claiming that the media “misquoted” him and apologized to the Alonto and Lucman families. Aguirre also cleared Aquino from his alleged involvement with the Marawi clash after the Department of trade and Industry (DtI) verified that Aquino was in Marawi for a GoNegosyo event. Fort their part, trillanes and Alejano both refuted Aguirre’s accusations, saying that the Senate and House records can verify they were not in Marawi City last month. Likewise, reporters covering the event denied that they misquoted the justice secretary in their news
reports. Despite the criticism, Aguirre still ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) “to conduct [an] investigation and case build-up over the alleged destabilization plot against the government of the Republic of the Philippines by some senators and other opposition leaders.” He also ordered the filing of “appropriate cases against those who may be found liable” if evidence warrants. On Monday, June 12, Liberal Party (LP) President Sen. Francis Pangilinan reiterated that the opposition, led by LP, is behind destabilization attempts against the government. During that day, vocal critics of the Duterte administration — among whom include Robredo, Aquino, trillanes, and Alejano — attended the “Defend Democracy Summit” held at the University of the Philippines Diliman in Quezon City. “We are in a democracy. It does not mean that whenever we have criticisms, or we don’t agree with some of the administration’s policies, there is already destabilization,” Pangilinan told reporters.

MANILA — A fortress with a tower where he would put a sniper who will shoot down enemies. For many children, this is a fantasy that comes from movies, television shows or videogames that they encounter as they are growing up. But for one boy displaced from Marawi City, this is a reality that he wants to prevent a repeat of the harrowing experience of fleeing the clashes that have overrun their city. “It struck me. I was never an evacuee so I never experienced what these children are experiencing,” Education Assistant Secretary G.H. Ambat told The Star in a phone interview tuesday, June 13. Ambat said she met the child during a visit to an evacuation center in Iligan City where some of those who fled Marawi City are being housed in makeshift tents. During the visit, she saw drawings made by children during recreation activities organized by volunteers and the local disaster risk reduction and management councils. “Many drew houses or villages where they came from,” said Ambat. One drawing, however, caught her attention. According to the United Nations Children’s Fund, the number of children affected by the ongoing clashes may reach as high as 50,000. “While the exact scale of emotional and psychological trauma is too early to determine, DepEd is endeavoring to restore routine in the lives of the displaced learners by expediting the delivery of education,” the aid agency said. DepEd said its personnel are currently undergoing training to provide psychosocial support for teachers and learners in evacuation centers. “the provision of psychosocial support is a clear need, based on testimonies of volunteers at the evacuation centers during the visit… to affected areas,” added the agency. School materials needed During the visits, DepEd also learned that some children do not intend to study due to lack of school materials. “there are some who do not want to study because they do not have clothes, bags,” said DepEd Region IX Director Isabelita Borres.
Region IX, which covers Zamboanga Peninsula, is where some of the evacuees from Marawi City fled. through the country, little more than 3,600 students from Marawi City have enrolled in other schools for the current school year. the figures are way below the estimated 22,000 who were displaced by the clashes. According to DepEd, most of those displaced are in schools near Marawi City, particularly in Iligan and Cagayan de Oro. DepEd has already identified a total of 88 accommodating schools in Lanao del Sur, Lanao del Norte and Iligan City. DepEd called for volunteers who can provide augmentation to learner kits that will be provided to students. Education Secretary Leonor Briones earlier urged DepEd personnel and the students to welcome those who transferred from Marawi City. She also appealed to those concerned to treat schools as zones of peace. “the loss and damages may be immeasurable but one thing remains to be their beacon to stability and a sense of normalcy amid and beyond conflict – quality education,” said DepEd. “With challenges and concerns within and beyond the department’s purview, DepEd’s foremost priority is the establishment of a safe, secure, and nurturing learning environment where children are enabled to develop their capacities, improve their well-being, and rebuild their lives,” it added.

This sunday, June 18 is that time of the year we dedicate to the fathers and other paternal influences in our lives. Generally celebrated on the third sunday in June, Father’s Day was inaugurated in the United states in the early 20th century to complement the Mother’s Day celebration. it was founded in spokane, Washington in 1910 by sonora smart Dodd, who wanted to recognize her father’s contributions. Dodd’s father, Civil War veteran William Jackson smart, was a single parent who raised her and her five siblings, and Father’s Day in June coincided with his birthday. According to the Library of Congress, President Woodrow Wilson — who established Mother’s Day by presidential proclamation in
1914 — approved of having Father’s Day in 1916 but it was never signed as an official proclamation. Nearly 50 years later, President Lyndon B. Johnson declared that the third sunday in June be devoted as the day for fathers. A decade later in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a law calling for a permanent recognition of Father’s Day through issuing a proclamation.

ALBERT Martinez is undeniably a formidable actor with immense talent. Even with the many awards and critical acclaim under his belt, Albert’s greatest trophies—his most precious rewards—are truly his kids: Alyanna, stylist and fashionista; Alissa, online entrepreneur and foodie; and Alfonso, certified car nut and restaurateur. in fact, Albert is first to admit how fatherhood completely changed his life and his outlook. “From a happy-go-lucky lifestyle,” he reveals, “i became more responsible. Malang—a leader of the second generation of modernists that rejuvenated Philippine painting in the post-Pacific War period—died at his home in Quezon City last Saturday (June 10), just short of 90. largely self-taught, he was noted for his imaginative use of color. Malang’s contemporaries include arturo Rogerio luz, ang
Kiukok, Hugo Yonzon, Juvenal Sanso, Federico aguilar alcuaz, Robeerto Rodriguez Chabet and Romulo Olazo. Born Mauro Malang Santos in Manila’s Sta. Cruz district in January 1928, he used his maternal surname—that of a pre-Spanish clan in San Miguel de Mayumo, Bulacan—for his artistic signature. Malang took no formal art lessons beyond those given by a retired art professor in his neighborhood, and half a semester’s classes at the UP College of Fine arts. after a few months of drawing comics strips for the Roces chain, he moved to the Manila Chronicle in 1947. There he was encouraged to paint by the abstractionist H. R. Ocampo, then one of the editors. Malang also developed friendships with Carlos V. Francisco, Vicente Manansala, Cesar legaspi, Emilio aguilar Cruz and the younger “neorealists” of postwar Manila. among the international masters, he was most influenced by the
Russian-French expressionist Marc Chagall. Constant themes In the 1950s, Malang started painting vignettes of Manila’s folk culture in gouache—opaque watercolor—that he found the easiest to use. as it matured, his work became more and more abstract. That it was still capable of engaging the viewer with its variety surprises, since his subjects remained the same: the graceful and sad Filipina; curiously decorative barong-barong; and our archipelago’s exuberant vegetation. Malang’s infectious optimism brought him commercial success long before the critics discovered his work. His first one-man show in 1962 sold out, and he never looked back. Malang also promoted artists’ causes until, worn out by their incessant factionalism, he retreated into evangelical religion. Engaging optimism Malang regarded his life’s work not as art but as a craft. “I don’t make social statements,” he often said. “When I look around me, I see patterns. I just enjoy what I do; and perhaps it shows in my work.” Using gouache, Malang would paint quickly, adding layer after layer, but allowing some of the earlier layers to shine through from underneath—“letting the viewer’s eyes themselves mix the colors.” Color the painter’s blood “Color is the blood of the paint-

lIVIng it up in Singapore was what Marvel’s latest superhero Tom Holland and our kababayan Jacob Batalon were doing last week when In The Know had the chance to hang out with them at the red carpet of the artScience Museum in Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. The lion City was their first stop for the fresh and much-anticipated take on the well-loved superhero’s latest flick “SpiderMan: Homecoming.” Tom and Jacob were really having the time of their lives as they danced on the stage in sync to the tune of Walk The Moon’s “Shut Up and Dance!” with thousands of Spider-Man fans and comic experts cheered them on, many dressed up as Spidey themselves. But while Tom Holland was of course the star of the show, it was also evident how Filipinoamerican actor Jacob Batalon was winning the hearts of fans with his mild demeanor and sudden punch lines, which made everyone roll in laughter. Our kababayan was adored indeed as he gave in to selfies for a line as long as the lead star’s. Tom even told In The Know that he wouldn’t have done as well as he thought he did in the movie if it weren’t for Jacob and their friendship. They were given the freedom to add in improvs in their scenes, which even made it to the final edit.
“Ours is the real deal. He is now my BFF on and off screen. I mean look at the guy! He’s amazing! He gave so much life and humor to who I was portraying in the film and now we have a brotherhood.” Their chemistry was such a hit apparently that Spidey fans may be seeing more of Jacob’s character in the future. Speaking of brotherhood, before the red carpet festivities for SpiderMan: Homecoming, Tom and Jacob hit the infinity pool and golf course together, and said they could not wait to explore the rest of the world together for the press tour. Tom added he finds it hard not to have Jacob by his side, and even revealed they want to visit the Philippines together! Jacob is a full-blooded Filipino who was born and raised in Hawaii. “I don’t speak Filipino but I do understand Tagalog like it’s English. We grew up in a Filipino household.” More than the language, Jacob says that he is more well versed with the dishes. “My mom cooks adobo, sinigang all the time. I also like the chicken soup with malunggay (tinola).” “Spider-Man: Homecoming” is showing on July 6. according to comic experts, it is the closest thing to the comics version of Spidey. Marvel and Sony introduces him this time as a high school student and new superhero enjoying his powers and out to prove that he can belong to the world of the avengers.

I was watching the news the other day when I saw a report about Richard Gutierrez’s transfer to aBs-CBN. as I watched him talk about the move to his former rival station, my mind wandered off to memory lane. I recall the time when this young man was just a little kid – yes, I’ve known him since he was still a child star and as part of their on-screen duo with his twin brother, Raymond. I remember how I used to take him to the movies and we would eat ice cream afterward. He was a simple kid with such a kind and innocent heart. It scared me a little when he finally decided to move to the Philippines to take his showbiz career seriously. He was growing into a typical adventurous teenager. It felt like letting go of your own son so he could spread his wings. I remember telling him that life in the Philippines would be different and that no matter what happens, he should always look back and remember his fans who were there for him when he was just starting out. several years later, standing before me now, is a fine gentleman with a string of accomplishment up his sleeves – the greatest of which is becoming a father to his son Zion. Fatherhood seems to suit Richard pretty well and he is maturing in so many ways. His relationship with his partner sarah Lahbati is going strong and this networkmove seems to be heading in the right direction. among his projects with aBsCBN are a movie with his former onscreen GMa partner, angel Locsin, and angelica Panganiban, and the upcoming series “La Luna sangre.” In “La Luna sangre,” Richard

THE pain from his father William Albert Mott Sr.’s death less than three months ago is still heavy in Tom Rodriguez’ heart, as he braces himself from feeling the blow of his loss all the more come Father’s Day on Sunday. The Filipino-American actor is grateful, however, that he was able to fly to his hometown in Arizona, a week before Mott succumbed to lung cancer on March 25 to be with his family and was by his father’s side during his last moments. The 29-year-old actor stayed there for almost a month since and didn’t accept any projects after what happened. According to Rodriguez, it was a shock for their family and they were not able to prepare that it will happen anytime soon. The Manila Times together with other members of the media was able to catch up with Rodriguez during his media launch as the newest brand ambassador of Essilor’s Crizal Prevecia. Rodriguez admitted that it was a tough time for their whole family but they are still partly happy that he’s not suffering anymore. He added that celebrating Father’s Day come Sunday would be different as it will be the first time he wouldn’t be able to greet his dad. “It was a tough thing that happened to my family and none of us have ever encountered or faced
anything like that. But that’s life. You have to move on. You have to keep going and the best thing that I could do for dad is be the best that I can be because everything that I am, partly is because of him,” he shared. “He helped mold and shape the person I am now. I am forever thankful for him so hopefully that will be the best father’s day gift that I can give for him—to show that he inspired me and impassioned me with so many things,” Rodriguez added. It is obvious the sadness of Rodriguez while he was talking but it didn’t prohibit him from sharing his fondest memories with his late father. “When I was five years old, he would open and fix the computer and when he was able to put it back together, I would copy once he leave and do what he just did but instead of fixing it, I broke it. The next day, he called me and ask to help fix it with him without even getting mad. Whether it was drawing, computers, whatever I wanted to learn, he let me and he knew that if you want something you’re passionate about, you explore and I am forever thankful for that. I miss him so much,” Rodriguez said. “But the most memorable thing I miss and I will remember of him is with the horses. BrittAny MilliAsseAu & nAncy Miller EarliEr this year, President Trump issued a memorandum which directed the Secretary of State, the attorney General, and the Secretary of Homeland Security to implement heightened screening and vetting of applications for visas and other immigration benefits. The memorandum explained the need for immediate implementation of additional heightened screening and vetting protocols and procedures in order to ensure the safety and security of the country. Particularly, the changes are aimed at keeping citizens safe from terrorist attacks and preventing entry into the United States of foreign nationals “who may aid, support, or commit violent, criminal, or terrorist acts.” in response to this directive, the Department of State proposed the creation of a new immigration form titled DS-5535, Supplemental Questions for Visa applicants. This form will require visa applicants to provide their travel history, including source of funding, for the last 15 years, employment and address history for the last 15 years, phone numbers and email addresses for the last five years, names and dates of birth for all siblings, children, and current and former spouses, among other specific information. applicants will also be asked to recount the details of their travel history and provide supporting documentation. in addition, the form will also request applicants to provide their social media identifiers and handles for the last five years. While the Department of State has stated that this form will not be required for all visa applicants and will be focused on “populations warranting increased scrutiny” it is expected to impact approximately 65,000 visa applicants worldwide each year. Critics of this new form argue that these requests for additional information will place

While this is 20 percent lower compared to those who ate processed meats, 50% increase in the risk is still too high for

Extreme vetting? Changes to the screening of visa applicants an overwhelming burden on applicants and lead to unwarranted visa denials and potential misrepresentation findings. The Department of State has explained that failure to provide the requested information will not necessarily result in a visa denial “if the consular officer determines the applicant has provided a credible explanation why he or she cannot answer a question or provide requested supporting documentation, such that the consular officer is able to conclude that the applicant has provided adequate information to determine the applicant’s eligibility to receive the visa.” However, most applicants may have difficulty recalling specific information solicited in the application and may inadvertently answer questions on the forms incorrectly. Such mistakes could in turn lead to denial of the application and allegations of misrepresentation, which could ultimately lead to inadmissibility for future immigration benefits. Further, critics of the new form are concerned about how the information obtained about social media platforms will be utilized. What specific information will officers use to determine visa eligibility after viewing an applicant’s social media profile? Will officers review the social media profiles of applicant’s friends and relatives? Will seemingly innocent and harmless communication between friends be misconstrued? Many of these questions remain unanswered. The Office of Management and Budget recently approved the proposed rule and the Department of State has begun utilizing the supplemental questionnaire. While there remains uncertainty regarding the impact this new form will have on visa adjudication, it serves as a valuable reminder that individuals should be cautious when applying for both immigrant and non-immigrant visas. all visa applicants should consult with an experienced immigration attorney
to determine their visa eligibility. in addition, applicants should utilize the services of a knowledgeable immigration attorney to assist in preparation and review of their visa application prior to submission to the Embassy or Consulate. as mentioned above, even a seemingly innocent mistake on a visa application could have dire consequences for visa applicants and even potentially lead to inadmissibility issues in the future. any information provided to consular officers, or any immigration agency should be carefully prepared and reviewed by experienced counsel. as these new vetting procedures become implemented, longer visa wait times, consular delays, and increased denials are projected. individuals that are looking to apply for visas are encouraged to do so as early as possible in order to avoid delays. in addition, applicants should seek counsel to make sure their visa applications are prepared completely and accurately in order to curb preventable processing delays. While the saturated fat in fresh (no preservative) red meat appears not to be linked to pancreatic cancer in this study, other studies have shown that people who eat red meat regularly have a higher risk for developing cancer of the colon, breast, and other cancers in general, compared to those who minimize eating red meat. red meat also causes a quick rise in the cholesterol blood level, a condition that increases the risk for the development of heart attack and stroke. in 2005 alone, 32,180 americans and 60,000 Europeans were found to have pancreatic cancer, a disease that is often diagnosed late because they are not readily obvious clinically. less than 5 per-
cent of these patients live for more than five years after the cancer is first detected. Other risk factors include smoking, family history of cancer of the pancreas, obesity, diabetes, age (older ones), gender (male), ethnicity (african), exposure to certain dyes, pesticides, and chemicals related to gasoline. Helicobacter pylori infection that causes the common ulcer of the stomach is also a predisposing factor. african americans appear to have higher incidence of pancreatic cancer and poorer prognosis than Whites. abdominal ultrasound, CT scan, and Endoscopic ultrasound are some procedures, together with some blood and liver function tests, that aid in the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. The treatment of pancreatic cancer varies according to the stage of the malignancy. The management includes surgery, radiation, chemotherapy alone, and chemotherapy with a targeted treatment. With an internet connection, we can do great and wonderful things that were the stuff of science fiction not so long ago. But there is a sinister side to the internet. The amount of available crud (translate that to disgusting things like porn and some such variation of evil) on the net is staggering. in the book i wrote for immigrants, for old-timers as well as for johnnycome-latelies, there is a chapter dedicated on avoiding the pitfalls of scams and the schemes of con artists designed to separate you from your hard-earned money. This time, the level of sophistication is up a notch. We are all at risk, unless and until we take the necessary psychological precautions to deal with this and become relatively “scam proof.” No one is sacrosanct. This is called the Nigerian scam apparently because the first perpetrators allegedly were well educated but destitute Nigerians who found that their facility for the English language could be exploited to scam millions using the internet. The scam has spread and morphed with mind-boggling variations but with only one nefarious purpose. No one race or culture has the monopoly on these. These can originate any-
where in the world. i have had mine come in purportedly from G8 as well as impoverished countries. if you have not consciously joined any lottery, why in heaven’s name would you think you have a snowball’s chance in hell of winning even one thin dime? also, legitimate lotteries will NEVEr, repeat NEVEr, ask you for money in order for a winner to claim a prize. There’s this cautionary tale of a young wife and her pastor husband in Tennessee. She shot him dead when things came to a head, having fallen victim to such a scam. They were out $17,500 and her husband, she claimed, was short-tempered with her, criticizing her for every little thing. a night of bickering over money apparently caused her to snap. Of course, there may have been existing cracks in the marriage and the trigger that blew it apart is a supposedly innocuous email. The lives of this couple’s three young children are forever changed. Filipino Caucus Family Retreat in Lake Hughes, CA The Filipino Caucus of the California Pacific Annual Conference (CALPAC) of the United Methodist Church (UMC) is inviting its members to a family retreat to be held from July 21 to 23. The venue will be the scenic Oak Camps and Conference Center (18651 Pine Canyon Road, Lake Hughes, California). The Rev. Dr. Bener Agtarap, Associate General Secretary of the UMC Board of Discipleship Ministry will be the resource person and guest speaker during the three- day gathering to be marked with group discussions and fellowship. “Rekindling the Flame” will be the theme of this retreat. is finally at peace [with who she is],” atticus said in an ambush interview. It will be remembered that angie and atticus King’s father archie King died in 2015 after his private chopper crashed in a forested area of mt. maculot in Cuenca, Batangas. many believe that angie held back her identity because of her father, a prominent Chinese-Filipino businessman. meanwhile, according to the couple, when angie came out, there were already a number of television offers knocking on their doors, but they believed—also with their family in mind—that their story had to be told in a particular way and most importantly at the right time. “We didn’t want to be exploited. We’re not making any money from this. We waived our talent fee—I mean, we’re doing this to get the word out, to get the message out,” angie told the press. She shared it took a long time for her loved ones to accept who she is now, but because of their love and respect, she is now enjoying her new life with everyone’s support. “If I had to, I would come out to Joey again and again. The regret would’ve been not trying to do so—of not coming out. The feeling of having her love and support–one of the most important people in my life—is huge. It gives you confidence. It makes you feel secure and safe. It makes you feel loved,” angie related. In response, the strong woman

Someone that I really, selfishly, want to have in my life’.” Poster child While angie is eager to share her journey into self-discovery, she revealed she continues having to adjust to becoming a public personality. “The hardest part of doing something like this and putting myself out there is not having privacy anymore. It’s tricky because I want to live a normal life, but now but I’m sort of the poster child for this topic,” she acknowledged. “But it’s crazy. When did being trans become cool? But it sort of gave me hope that people can change and people can accept. We’re still trying to figure out what we did right so we can share it with other people,” angie continued. For Joey, their family’s message is “positivity.” She made it clear that she is no superwoman in the whole process, admitting it was difficult to reach the point of acceptance. “It was really hard–the last two years was hard. But I’m glad I went through that. I was throwing plates against the wall. I mean, hello, of course it’s hard. If you say, ‘I don’t want this, this is not for me,’ you’ve made a decision. But the thing is, I want her. I want to make this work. I just had to get over whatever kiyeme [issues] I had. That’s it, basically.”

Completely resected pancreatic cancer provides the best opportunity for a survival on a longer term, albeit still not a cure. The most common drug used is gemcitabine (gemzar), but recently this drug, in combination with erlotimib (Tarceva), has proved useful in advanced cases. Chemotherapy may be used in combination with radiation, which uses high energy x-rays to shrink the tumor or slow its growth. The other option is biological and targeted therapies, which “enhances the body natural immune system to stop tumor growth, changing cellular signals that permit tumor growth, mak-
ing tumors more susceptible to an immune system attack; and blocking the process that change normal cells into cancer, thereby stopping the abnormal growth behavior of a tumor.” Smoking is one of the most significant risk factors, besides eating red meat. For prevention, minimizing red meat ingestion, abstinence from cigarettes, maintaining a normal body weight, daily exercises, and eating a lot of vegetables, fruits and whole grains have all been found to significantly lower the risk of the development of pancreatic cancer, not to mention heart disease, stroke, other forms of cancer, and even alzheimer’s. In cardiovascular illnesses, like heart attack and stroke, in metabolic diseases, like type 2 diabetes, and in most cancers, lifestyle
and personal behavior are the greatest factors in the causation of these maladies, and these killers are, therefore, preventable. as always, as far as our health is concerned, the ball is in our court. The thing is I don’t have an existing account and reading the fine print below and editing the grammatical errors are red flags that tell me these con artists have breached my spam guard. no legitimate financial entity will ask you for information of such nature. If you do have an account, cut these scammers off at the knees with the simple ex-
pediency of calling the fraud unit of your bank or credit card company yourself. Take the bull by the horns. generate the call. get the telephone number from your statement or your card and DO nOT CaLL THe nUmBeR that the caller or e-mailer provided you with. It’s a trap. Report such emails as spam. Don’t just delete it. Sure, they will morph into another form but be proactive and make it more difficult for them. These scams are like viruses or shape shifters and can mutate faster than the speed of light. PC users are more vulnerable to spammers/scammers and pesky pop-ups than mac users. C’est la vie. Is there karmic justice? Because con artists on the internet rarely ever see the faces of their
victims or know the full extent of the damage that they wreak on real people with real lives, these crimes seem impersonal in nature and rarely, if ever, do con artists get their comeuppance. The wheels of justice grind ponderously, exceedingly slow and you sometimes wonder, if they would ever catch up with this distinct phenomenon of the interesting times we live in. Be on guard. Harry Styles will be taking center stage in Manila for a solo concert on May 1, 2018 at the Mall of asia arena. Popularly known as British pop boy band One Direction member, Harry took to Instagram on Thursday, June 8 to announce his self-titled world tour itinerary, which includes a one-night gig in the country. It will mark Harry’s first tour as a solo artist. Harry will be bringing american indie rock band Warpaint as his special guest.
