mANILA is planning to ask for Washington’s help in countering militants off the waters in the southern Philippines, the Department of Defense (DND) said on tuesday, february 7. In an interview with Agence france-Presse (AfP), Philippine Defense secretary Delfin Lorenzana said the country will ask the United states to conduct joint naval exercises across the sibutu Passage to guard it against pirate attacks. Located between northern malaysia and the southern Philippines, about 13,000 shipping vessels reportedly use the sibutu passage annually. According to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), the said maritime channel offers the fastest shipping routes between Australia and other manufacturing countries like China, Japan, and south Korea. Last month, the International maritime Bureau (ImB) said in its report that the waters off the southern Philippines have become ‘increasingly dangerous’ as the number of maritime kidnappings in the region hit a 10-year
