POLICE Chief Director General Oscar Albayalde said that the Philippine National Police (PNP) takes the alleged assassination plot of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) against President Rodrigo Duterte “very seriously.” Duterte earlier claimed that the U.S.-based CIA wants him dead, as he also alleged that other countries like Russia and China are watching him. “We take the security concerns of the president very seriously,” Albayalde told reporters in a press briefing on Wednesday, August 22. The PNP chief said that the police always assume a threat against the life of the president as serious as various groups including communists and local terrorists “may want him out of their way.” He said the security force should take the threat even more seriously as the information came from the President himself, but he emphasized that the PNP can “adequately” protect him. But despite giving this assurance, Albayalde earlier said there is no information within the PNP over any alleged CIA threat against the president.

HUNDREDS of newspaper across the U.S. on Thursday, August 16 joined together in calling out President Donald Trump’s diatribes against news media which he has more than once dubbed “the enemy of the people.” Nearly 350 editorials were published Thursday, after the Boston Globe last week encouraged editorial boards to write and publish editorials to condemn what it described as a “dirty war against the free press.” “This relentless assault on the free press has dangerous consequences. We asked editorial boards from around the country — liberal and conservative, large and small — to join us today to address this fundamental threat in their own words,” wrote the Boston Globe. Trending on Twitter nationwide was the hashtag, #freepress. In response, Trump on Thursday, sent out tweets saying that the “fake news media is the opposition party.” “It is very bad for our Great Country…. BUT WE ARE WINNING,” tweeted Trump, before accusing the Boston Globe for “collusion with other papers on free press.” Among the over 300 papers that sent their editorials were the Fresno Bee, the Orange County Regis-
ter, the Denver Post, the Chicago Sun-Times, and the New York Times which described Trump’s labeling of the press as the enemy, “dangerous.” “In 2018, some of the most damaging attacks are coming from government officials,” said the New York Times in its editorial. The paper added that correcting mistakes were “core to our job.” “But insisting that truths you don’t like are ‘fake news’ is dangerous to the lifeblood of democracy,” added the New York Times. “These attacks on the press are particularly threatening to journalists in nations with a less secure rule of law and to smaller publications in the United States, already buffeted by the industry’s economic crisis.” But a number of newspapers that have been critical of Trump did choose not to send out editorials. These included the Los Angeles Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the Washington Post. Editorial page editor of the San Francisco Chronicle, John Diaz, explained the paper’s reason despite being in agreement with the Boston Globe’s deputy managing editor for the editorial page, Marjorie Pritchard. “It’s not that we take issues with the argument that Trump’s assault on the truth generally, and his ef-
forts to diminish the free press specifically, pose a serious threat to American democracy,” wrote Diaz. “One of our most essential values is independence. The Globe’s argument is that having a united front on the issue — with voices from Boise to Boston taking a stand for the First Amendment, each in a newspaper’s own words — makes a powerful statement,” he added. “However, I would counter that answering a call to join the crowd, no matter how worthy the cause, is not the same as an institution deciding on its own to raise a matter.” The Capital Gazette, which lost staff members last month in a targeted shooting attack, said that Trump’s opinion was not something they saw as important. “It’s not the we disagree with concerns about the president’s language in speeches and on social media. We noted with regret the hurtful nature of his remarks last month calling most journalists dishonest even as we attended funerals for five friends and colleagues killed in the June 28 attack on our newsroom,” said the paper. “We’re just not coordinating with other news organizations because the president’s opinion, frankly, is just not that important to us,” added the Capital Gazette. “We are far more con-

Despite insisting that its projects in the Spratly Islands are focused on improving the living and working conditions of those stationed on the artificial islands, China continues to build administrative buildings, weapons stations, sensor emplacements and other facilities on the features. China’s expansion efforts are currently focused on its “big three” islands – Fiery Cross, Subi and Mischief Reefs, which are also being claimed by the Philippines. Fil-Am recognized as one of Cal State LA’s outstanding professors CAL State LA recognized Ray de Leon as one of the institution’s outstanding professors during the 2018 University Fall Convocation on Friday, August 17. De Leon, a professor of kinesiology in the Rongxiang Xu College of Health and Human Services at Cal State LA, was one of four outstanding professors honored for excellence in teaching and significant achievement in scholarly inquiry or creativity, as well as professional activities and community service at the event held at Luckman Fine Arts Complex. An expert in exercise therapies for spinal cord injury, de Leon pioneered the use of robotic devices for gait rehabilitation in rodent models. His findings led to the development of new devices used to treat paralysis after spinal cord injury and stroke. A resident of Glendale, de Leon received his Ph.D. in physiological science from the University of California, Los Angeles. He has secured grants totaling more than $4.2 million, which have supported more than 80 Cal State LA students in research projects, and he has
authored over 50 papers that were published in top journals, such as The Journal of Neuroscience and The Journal of Neurotrauma. He is director of the university’s School of Kinesiology and Nutritional Science. He is also the founder of the Mobility Center at Cal State LA, which has helped more than 300 people with disabilities get access to exercise therapy. De Leon helped develop Rehabilitation and Therapeutic Exercise curriculum in kinesiology. This curriculum emphasizes community service and has received multiple awards and special recognition from Congress, the California Legislature and the City of Los Angeles. Additionally, three Outstanding Professor Awards went to Cal State LA faculty members Nana Lawson Bush, V, Dionne Espinoza and ChorSwang Ngin, and an Outstanding Lecturer Award was given to Howard Lum. A social media post about a Filipina household service worker in Bahrain who was supposedly subjected to genital mutilation by her employer went viral but turned out later that the alleged incident did not happen. DFA Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs Sarah Lou Arriola in a statement said that while the concern was appreciated, Filipinos abroad should exercise caution in posting such information “without first checking its veracity.” Ambassador to Manama Alfonso Ver, in a report to the DFA, said the woman had returned to
the Philippines when the post went viral. Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano had the Filipina located and brought immediately to the hospital for medical examination. “Doctors said that upon examination, the victim had no indication whatsoever of genital mutilation,” Ambassador Ver said. Arriola said that every complaint need not go viral on social media because the DFA would always take it seriously and have it investigated. “We have to protect the interests of our kababayan victim and at the same time make sure we do not unnecessarily strain our relations with the host state,” she added. n

Duterte urges Filipinos: ‘Be like Ninoy’ by AJPress PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte said on Tuesday, August 21 that the country needs citizens like the late Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. Tuesday marked Ninoy Aquino Day, the 35th anniversary since the senator was assassinated upon his arrival at the then-Manila International Airport after a three-year selfexile in Boston, Massachusetts. In a statement from the Malacañang Palace, Duterte commemorated Ninoy Aquino Day and recognized the heroism of the late senator and the father of former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III. “In this time of real and lasting change, we need more citizens like him so we can steer our country toward the direction where a brighter and better future awaits us all,” Duterte said. The president’s message added that Aquino “died while fighting to restore peace and democracy in the Philippines.” Duterte also cited how Aquino inspired the very first bloodless revolt that became a significant turning point in Philippine history. It triggered events that led to the overthrow of Marcos. After the three-day uprising known as the People Power Revolution commenced along Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Manila, the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. fled to Hawaii on February 25, 1986. It paved the way for the country’s freedom from the regime accused of countless human rights violations and ill-gotten wealth accumulation.
“His (Ninoy’s) profound love of country has inspired a revolution that altered the course of our nation’s history and gave birth to the freedoms we enjoy today,” Duterte’s message said. Aquino’s wife, Corazon “Cory” Aquino, rose to power as the president following Marcos. The current president went on to encourage the public to look back at Aquino’s life and acknowledge the nationalism that the latter displayed all throughout his lifetime. “Let us take this opportunity to reflect on his sacrifice as we honor the courage and patriotism that Ninoy demonstrated during his struggle,” the president added. Duterte also advised public officials to emulate Aquino as they push for initiatives that would benefit the masses and the general public. “May his dedication to his cause serve as a guidepost for our current leaders in government as they advance the welfare of our people, especially the oppressed and marginalized,” Duterte said. The president concluded the statement by asking for the public’s cooperation in addressing the conflicts that are plaguing the society. “This can only be achieved if we work together to institute meaningful reforms that will put an end to the many social ills that have obstructed our path toward becoming a mature and stable democracy,” the president stated. Justice remains unserved Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) chairman Dante Jimenez noted that justice for Aquino’s assassination is yet to
be seen three decades later. “Justice remains elusive and still haunts the nation that is waiting for answers,” Jimenez said in a statement. He also noted that despite all the years that have passed, the real mastermind for the crime has still not been punished or placed behind bars. “Who masterminded the orchestrated killing of Ninoy Aquino? Because only the soldiers and police security escorts were convicted by the court,” he added. Family members, friends and supporters of the late senator attended the “Mass for National Transformation” at the Santo Domingo Church in Quezon City. The mass presided by Msgr. Gerardo Santos was intended to commemorate Aquino’s 35th death anniversary and to remember the casualties of Duterte’s war on drugs as well as Marcos’ martial law victims. Among those present were former President Noynoy Aquino, Vice President Leni Robredo, Sen. Antonio Trillanes 4th, former Social Welfare Secretary Corazon Soliman, former Commission on Human Rights Chairwoman Etta Rosales, and former education chief Armin Luistro. IN 35 years, a generation has reached adulthood. Events before the birth of members of this generation are relegated to their history lessons. Each year that passes makes remembering more difficult. And yet this country cannot afford to forget former senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. and what he was fighting for, which drove him to return home from exile on that fateful afternoon, 35 years ago today. Who ordered Aquino’s assassination together with alleged communist hit man Rolando Galman remains a mystery. The truth eluded the country even after Aquino’s widow and their only son became president. What has always been certain was Ninoy Aquino’s cause: to free his country from the yoke of dictatorship. The cause still resonates as certain public officials in this country even in remote municipalities continue to behave like dictators, trample on human rights and treat public coffers like their personal piggybank. Younger generations did not experience those days when the state controlled people’s movements, the flow of information and even men’s hairstyles and women’s hemlines. But the youth – and the older generations — can still be reminded about those days, when plunder was committed on such a large scale that a new word had to
be coined for it. The “kleptocracy” and authoritarian rule held back economic development. By the time democracy was restored in 1986, with Ninoy Aquino’s widow Corazon taking the helm of government, the country — which was second only to Japan in the level of development when Ferdinand Marcos became president — had fallen behind several of its neighbors in many human development indicators. Today the country is still trying to catch up and recover its place in the region. Ninoy Aquino risked his life to return to the country and lead the movement against the abuses of the Marcos dictatorship. Aquino did not make it past the airport that now bears his name. But his death awakened a nation from apathy and galvanized a movement to end an oppressive regime. It’s a story worth retelling, and remembering, decades after Aquino’s murder. The admonition often given in those dark days of oppression remains relevant to this day: freedom is like air — you take it for granted, until it is taken away. (Philstar.com)

Trump has been implicated in two of these counts of the crime that the president has been denying and lying about since this was reported by media he has been calling “fake news.” THIS IS NOT FAKE NEWS.
Cohen admitted — under oath in an open court, substantiated with hard evidence, to be corroborated by other evidence pursuant to the rule of law — that he paid hush money to two women (Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal) in coordination with and at the direction of a candidate running for federal office (Donald Trump) to influence the outcome of the election. These payments were made to silence these women about their alleged affairs with thenprivate citizen Trump just before the 2016 elections in order to conceal material information to the public to help him win the presidency. As CNBC reported, “Cohen pleaded guilty to one count of
causing an illegal corporate contribution in 2016 by working with the CEO of a media company, at the direction of a federal candidate for federal election, to keep information from the public. Cohen said he paid a woman $150,000 ‘for the principal purpose of influencing the election.’” The second admission implicating Trump was “making an excessive campaign contribution. He said he used a company under his control to pay $130,000 to a woman at the direction of the same candidate.” Trump refused to comment when reporters asked him about this news, but just responded to the other news of the day
headlining his former campaign manager Paul Manafort who was found guilty on eight criminal counts by a jury in Virginia. This is the first to come as a result of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation in the alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia to interfere in the 2016 U.S. presidential election to damage Hillary Clinton’s campaign and help Trump win. “I think the whole Manafort trial is very sad...I think it’s a very sad day for our country,” the president said at the White House. “He happens to be a very good person, and I think it’s very sad what they’ve done to Paul Manafort.” The questions:
What will now happen to President Donald Trump? Will he also be indicted for the crime Cohen pleaded guilty to? After all, this criminal act was meant to benefit Trump, not Cohen. What did the president’s men and women in the White House and in the Republican Party know about this? Were they ordered by Trump to conceal this from the public? Would this constitute obstruction of justice? Were they complicit in covering up this violation as they continued to lie to the American people? And now that this has come out under oath in court, what will the honorable men and women of the Republican Party do to prove to the American peo-
ple that the party of Lincoln believes in the rule of law, and that no one — not even the president — is above the law? How would this development be part of the bigger picture of the Mueller probe? How does the evidence coming from this relate to the other pieces of evidence already in the hands of Mueller? How will this news affect the 2018 midterm elections? Senator Heller worked with President Trump to write and pass tax cuts for our families and small businesses, which are contributing to the economic growth for AAPI-owned businesses in Las Vegas’s Chinatown. Senator Heller is committed to a betterment of our families and children in Nevada. He is united with the AAPI community in our shared efforts to grow our economy secure our border, and protect the American Dream. I believe it is time for President Duterte to order the injection of the “build, build, build” spirt (which is set to build a railway system throughout the country and construct a subway in the metropolis) into the solution of our perennial nightmare over NAIA. Can’t-do vs can-do agencies NAIA is a can’t-do institution and facility of the government, saddled with operational and management problems, stinking toilets, and burdened by a sorry/ tragic history. It is often named as one of the world’s worst airports. The new international airport is a challenging infrastructure need or fantasy project that will submit to engineering knowhow, financial analysis and financing, project management, and a nononsense construction timetable. It is a must-have project, and will most likely be built in a hurry. As an institution, NAIA has become a conundrum, a problem that is intractable or difficult to solve. It is like the perennial flood-

ing of Metro Manila and neighboring provinces; the serpentine clogged traffic at EDSA; the invincibly corrupt and inefficient government bureaucracy; the sclerotic party system and Philippine political culture; the ageless communist insurgency and militancy. These problems share one quality in common; they have been around us for generations, but they have stonily defied solution. Filipinos now expect to see them every time they wake up. A traumatic jolt The airport incident on Thursday, August 16, involving a Xiamen Air plane, which caused the temporary closure of NAIA to air traffic, is paradoxically a blessing or traumatic jolt. It has loosened many tongues. Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade said on Saturday
that the mishap serves as an “eye-opener” for airport authorities, and presumably his department. “This incident served as a reminder for us to take a second look at the processes, procedures, and protocols of concerned agencies, as well as airlines, so that we may all improve in the future,” Tugade said. House transportation committee chairman Cesar Sarmiento seemed to leap out of his chair. He declared that it is time to build a new international airport outside Manila. He zeroed in on NAIA’s single runway facility as the root of our problems in our premier international airport. He pointed to the existing Clark International Airport in Pampanga, which has rapidly emerged

MANILA— Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat on Wednesday said she is keeping the tourism slogan “It’s more fun in the Philippines.” “The reason why I’m keeping the slogan is because I want more continuity,” Puyat said in an interview with ANC’s “Headstart.” Puyat lamented why the Philippines often changes its slogan in each administration. For Puyat, the “It’s more fun in the Philippines” campaign launched in
2012 by the Department of Tourism and BBDO Guerrero, one of the country’s most awarded advertising firms, works. “Why change something that works?” she added.

MANILA — Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo said she supports President Duterte’s plan for the country to have joint exploration with China of some disputed areas in the West Philippine Sea. “Yes, I support that. We should be friends with China. That was also my policy during my administration,” the former president said in an interview on GMA-7’s “Unang Hirit”. Some Duterte administration critics have questioned the plan, saying it would violate the Constitution if the areas of joint explo-
ration were part of the country’s 200-mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio has said no such violation would be committed provided that Manila were in control of any joint development project and Beijing did not insist on its ownership claim over areas within the Philippines’ EEZ. Carpio helped the government win its case in 2016 against China in the United Nations-backed Permanent Court of Arbitration. Under the ruling, three sea features in the West Philippine Sea, including Beijing-occupied Mischief Reef and Recto Bank, are part of the Philippines’ EEZ. n

DOT says 5,000 hotel rooms may reopen in Boracay on Oct. 26 MANILA — The Department of Tourism said around 5,000 hotel rooms are expected to open during the soft-opening of Boracay island on October 26. At the Senate hearing into the Boracay closure on Monday, August 20, DOT Undersecretary Arthur Boncato Jr. explained that Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat ordered the tourism

As a matter of urgent necessity and for the sake of national sanity, our sovereign government must finance and build posthaste a new international airport to serve our national capital and the entire country. Congress and transportation officials have long discussed various proposals to address the problem, but so far nothing has availed. The repeated building of new terminals at NAIA has solved nothing, because the fundamental problem of NAIA is its single runway. Until this problem is met, we should expect no relief or change. In other countries in Asia, notably South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong, governments have built second airports outside the main city, that are located an hour or more away. The key to making this work in our case is to plan this infrastructure right, build a facility with sev-
eral runways and the capacity to serve several million passengers. Most important is the construction of fast rail system, which can speedily move passengers to and from the airport. We will only add that the new international airport should be built according to the highest design standards and specifications, as befit our fast-growing nation of over 100 million. It is to compete in our real division. New mindset, new day The Duterte administration is admirably moving now with its “build, build, build” policy to modernize and provide longneeded infrastructure to the entire country from north to south. The program will lift the country to the upper rungs of economic development, and drive the economy to new heights. It makes no sense to modernize highways, railways and build
a subway, upgrade our armed forces and police, overhaul our political system, and leave our international airport in the shadows, like a black sheep. I submit that adding a second international airport for our capital region fits squarely into this new national mindset. The cost, whatever it may be, can be afforded and easily financed. If government wants the private sector to do it, several investors will readily line up to take on the burden. That is how acutely the need is felt by all. There is paramount national interest in building another international airport for our capital region and the nation. The time to start building is now. When the new airport is finished, should we call it the Ninoy Aquino International Airport? Good heavens, no! This is a new day. (ManilaTimes.net)

Journal Think outside the box: Reinvention and continuing education: When to consider a new career Maps toward career development by AJPress WHETHER you’ve been at your job for a few years or longer, there is some point during your career when you feel lukewarm about what you’re doing. Having been in the same job for years boxes you in an environment that makes it acceptable for you — good or bad. This is also regardless of age, background or accomplishments, because a lot of people have probably fantasized about the possibility of a new career. Those who haven’t are the exception. According to the Harvard Business Review (HBR), in 2015 the professional networking site LinkedIn reported that of its 313 million members, 25 percent are active job seekers. Another 60 percent were considered as passive job seekers — those not proactively searching for a new job, but will seriously consider opportunities. Watch for red flags — major signs that it’s time to consider a new career. Although it’s not going to be an easy decision to leave your job, it is probably about time to make a serious assessment about your future. Here are telltale signs that it’s time to move on and consider a new job or career:
1. Yo u d o n ’ t f e e l challenged. Your job has become boring and uninteresting, and you’ve hit a plateau. You are not learning and your mind is no longer stimulated. If you feel there’s still hope, ask for new projects and training, if possible. 2. You’ve been skipped for a promotion. If feel that you’ve done a good job to deserve an upgrade in your position then just passed over for someone else is disappointing to say the least. Find out why management has decided to give the promotion to someone else, as you could have missed the right training or certification. 3. You don’t get along with your boss. Employees who are actually good friends with their boss are rare. In a research done by HBR, they found that 75 percent of working adults find that most stressful part of their job is their immediate supervisor or manager. However, there should be somewhat a relationship between the two that requires respect and trust. If there’s none, then most likely your chances for success are limited. 4. People have stopped talking to you. You’re not included in management meetings, and people are making decisions without your input. It’s possible

that you are being shut out on purpose, and you’ve become the office wallpaper — you’re there but they don’t care. If this is happening, then you will need to decide whether it’s better to ask what’s going on or simply start looking for a new job. 5. The stress has become unmanageable. A heavy workload plus other outside stress like having a family (or personal life) is something most people are unable to balance. Some people don’t leave their jobs because the pay is good, but realized later on that the stress wasn’t worth it. 6. You have nightmares about your job. Of course it’s normal to have dreams about your job once in awhile. But if it is a recurring bad dream about your office, then your brain might be trying to tell you something. Another sure sign that your work has become a nightmare is when you get depressed when you think about it. We are naturally set to fear and avoid change, even it is obvious that we are undecidedly happy with our current situation. Although it’s hard to tell the difference between short-term dissatisfaction and a lingering, deep-seated unhappiness about your job; it’s always clear when you have had enough.

As one sets forth on a trip towards self-discovery and career development, it is a common protocol to be enamored with two essential must-haves - reinvention and continuing education. But first we must understand, what exactly is a career? Career is commonly associated with two other terms - job and work. All three are usually used interchangeably despite their differences in meaning and application. Work is defined as the domain of life in which people, paid or unpaid, provide
labor for an outcome of a service or a good. Job, on one hand, pertains to a specific work position which may be permanent full-time or part-time and in a particular role or organization. On the other hand, career is the sequence or collection of jobs held over an individual’s life, a linear sequence of jobs which have a vertical ‘advancement related’ trajectory. What is career development? According to the Career Development Association of Alberta (CDAA), career development is the lifelong process of managing learning, work, leisure, and transitions in order to move toward a personally determined and evolving preferred future. In short, it is about navigating your journey through life and work. Career development encompasses not just occupation but
also the whole person. More than that, it concerns him or her in the ever-changing contexts of his or her life. Every environmental pressures and constraint play an important role in the career progress one makes. From the bonds that tie them to their significant others to their responsibilities to children and aging parents. All these add up to the total structure of one’s circumstances. Therefore they are factors that must be understood and taken into consideration. If the convergence of self and external situations lead to career development, then reinvention and continuing education must be maps that lead us to a welldeveloped career. How an AAPI comedy show threatens the homogeneity of the largely white comedy world As diversity heightens in entertainment, Asian comics make their way by Klarize

ON Sunday, July 29, a crowd of people gathered in the courtyard of the Santa Monica Playhouse, awaiting “Crazy Woke Asians,” a comedy show with an all-Asian lineup. It was a sold-out night and the crowd was majority young Asian creatives who were chatting about pilots they were writing, auditions they were preparing for and short films that they just wrapped. Historically, Asian writers, actors, filmmakers and musicians weren’t visible and, for the mainstream audience, they simply didn’t exist. For decades, Asian creatives have fought against the homogeneity of the entertainment world that severely limited the opportunities for people of color. The world of comedy is no different. The opportunities to thrive as an Asian comic have been limited to minor, often stereotypical Asian roles on sitcoms and films. But as the push for diversity grows stronger, comedians in the Asian-American community are seizing the opportunity to create their own mark in the industry. Hosted by comedians Kiki Yeung and Jason Cheny, “Crazy Woke Asians” strives to expand that influence and brighten the spotlight on the characteristics that make Asian comedy so special. The fetishization of Asian women was brought up in a lot of sets, including Atsuko Okatsuka, whose fiery set garnered the most cheers. Citing a study that said that Asian women are the most desirable, Okatsuka remarked, “So, men prefer Asian women...why? They say we’re quiet, obedient and docile, and to those men, I ask: have you ever even MET an Asian woman? Try walking into an Asian woman’s home without taking off your shoes and see how docile she is.” In the wake of the successful summer blockbuster flick “Crazy Rich Asians” (which features the first all-Asian cast since 1993’s “The Joy Luck Club”), there has been a major push for various entertainment avenues to shed more light on Asians in show business.

Most people’s first exposure to Asian American comedy was in the early 1990s when Margaret Cho rose above the ranks in comedy, opening for Jerry Seinfeld, appearing on a Bob Hope special and a frequent guest on “The Arsenio Hall Show.” But most people know the premier Korean-American comic from the short-lived 90s sitcom “All-American Girl.” (Audiences wouldn’t see another Asian sitcom cast until 2014 with ABC’s “Fresh Off the Boat.”) Joseph Herbert, also known as Jo Koy, is a half-Filipino American comic who got his start on BET’s “ComicView” and in television specials like Jamie Foxx Presents: Laffapalooza!” and comedy festivals like Just For Laughs in Montreal. Appearing in small pockets of the world of entertainment, AAPI comics existed as tokens. We all know Margaret Cho, Jo Koy and Aziz Ansari, but it wasn’t until the last few years that Asian comics have come into mass prominence, creating and starring in sitcoms, films and Netflix specials. Mainstream comedy, in particular, has been a racially homogenous arena, but big guns like Ali Wong, Ronny Chieng and Hasan Minhaj who have been hacking it out for years and have just recently come into prominence, ushering a new wave of Asian American comics in the standup, sitcom and improvisational comedy realms. age. As applied to career development, it is when an individual tries to reassess their career path and takes on another direction. It usually happens when the person is not satisfied with the career anymore. Normally, when one spends a lengthy amount of time on a certain career, one finds it difficult to pursue another task. Let alone swerve in a whole different direction. As part of the reinvention process, it is important to have the courage to explore new things career-wise. May it be something you have not done before or a certain aspect you are afraid to try your way into. Yes, there is a chance you will go through some rough patch. But where else would those chances be gone? The reward is great when you get past the hesitations. In order to do such, smalls steps must be taken to ensure at least a minimal improvement. Below are some of the ways one can reinvent their
careers. 1. Volunteer to work on new projects that are outside of your usual duties. 2. Take part in initiatives that expose you to different aspects of the organization. 3. Communicate well with peers you do not normally interact with on a regular basis. 4. Participating in new projects and teams. How about continuing education, how does that help? Continuing education is composed of learning activities that cater directly to the certain specialization one is already employed in. They are typically taught in institutions such as a college or university, city employment agency or corporation specializing in a certain skill. These courses delve more deeply into the specializations that are relevant to your career more than a college course will. Fundamental skills are also taught in a continuing education. These additional skills augment
the degree and major one had finished. Typical continuing education classes vary depending on industry and specialization. Some of the classes include Computer Operating Systems, Microsoft Office, Office Management and Productivity, Adobe Creative Suite and Project Management. Education classes help advance one’s career and standing in a competitive workplace. More often than not, it is an arena out there where employers would eliminate those who no longer contribute to the progress of the workforce. Reinvention and continuing education are both helpful ways to aid in career development. People who take the time to engage in such activities would always have something new and innovative to offer on the table. The benefits of reinventing and educating oneself outweigh the struggles and risks that come with the territory. After all, as Arthur Golden once suggested. (AJPress)

because the ultimate goal is to find the job that is the suitable fit for them. “I think one common mistake people make is they get stuck with the same thing,” de Guzman shared with the Asian Journal. “They have a preconPAGE B4 ceived notion of what kind of job they can get and that they get into some tunnel vision of their approach in their efforts, that they limit their ability to find the opportunity that fits well with them.” So in order to streamline the process of landing your next job, establishing a more nuanced way to search for opportunities and branding yourself as a viable candidate for any given position is essential. Here are some of de Guzman’s tips to help with your job search. Take advantage of your connections No matter what level of experience you have and what industry you’re working in (or looking to work in), professional connections are valuable relationships to keep when looking for new career opportunities, de Guzman says. Especially if you’re new to a field or fresh out of college and you have little to no professional exper ience, leveraging your network — whether that be your college’s alumni office or internship or other professional connections you may have — can be helpful in job searching. “For the first timers, clearly, they’re looking for opportunities that align with your training, lifestyle and ambition, so they’re a little more limited in terms of how wide they cast their net,” de Guzman shares. “So regardless if they’re firsttime job market seekers, one thing that helps in casting a wider net is to very thoughtfully think of your network and leverage all your possible connections. One might not give you job, but the next one might, or the next one, so every contact you make, you can expand your network three or four times forward. The truth is people want to help, so don’t be shy. Make a list of your network, and if they cannot help you directly, ask if you can get connected to others for more opportunities.” Before making a massive career change, take time to reflect and act with intention “The first thing I tell people is to don’t quit your current job right away, especially if you need the income. Don’t just quit because you hate your job and don’t act based on emotional incidence,” de Guzman says. She says if that if you’re out of a job already, networking, again, as much as you can is essential. possible career change. If you’re looking into taking on a whole new different career path, time needs to be taken before making moves. Ask yourself: Why do I want to change careers? W hat will that look like? What about this current position do I no longer like? Tak ing t ime to ref lect on yourself and the reasons for this desired shift is essential, de Guzman says. This means taking stock of all your training and skills and really thinking about how those characteristics could apply to other opportunities in order to make that transition as smooth as possible. “Hunker down, get a piece of paper, list out your skills and really do a deep dive into your own aspirations, likes and strengths and you will find that those skills are applicable to an opportunity to be appealing to you,” de Guzman added. Expand your skill set and training while highlighting experience If you’re of a certain age, searching for a job could be harder. Ageism toward older Americans is common in many industries, but de Guzman says that harnessing your age and wisdom and emphasizing experience could actually be an advantage in your job search. “I think there’s a lot of merit to the wisdom and experience that sort of demographic offers,” de Guzman says In a sense, a person could truly leverage that, that depth of experience that a person may have, in terms of projects completed and life cycle at a business. At the end of the day, companies want people to stay. Turnover is very expensive and that is an advantage of anybody who has been working for more than 10 years.” Among the older demographic, keeping up with technology and maneuvering around electronically could be a roadblock, so lea r n i ng basic computer software and getting training in various technological courses could be helpful. Even language courses, de Guzman says, could help some people feel more confident in their communication skills and ability to conduct
themselves in a professional manner. “ Tech nolog ica l sk i l ls a re key now and everybody needs to know things like Microsoft Office or manage an electronic calendar,” de Guzman advises. “These are things that have become necessary, so get up to speed with those. I think you can also consider training courses at community college in these aspects could be beneficial.” Embrace all parts of you and be yourself The process of making ourselves look viable to employers, we can often feel pressured to show a carefully-curated version of ourselves, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but we shouldn’t completely deviate from who we are when presenting ourselves to prospective employers. De Guzman shared a story about someone she knew who had training as an actor in college as an undergraduate and then went on to a “very good” graduate school and earned his MBA and then landed a great job. “I told him, ‘Well, congratulations on that job,’ but don’t forget that your acting traini ng helped you get t here,’” she shared. “So when you tell someone that you were an actor who got into an MBA program, that’s a much more interesting story than someone who just got their MBA in grad school. It gives the person on the other side of that interview a glimpse into how you overcome challenges in a very indirect, but direct way how you think and how you make decisions.” “At the end of the day, just be yourself and you need to be happy with whatever it is you want, whether that’s balance and be honest and realize that you can’t have it all,” de Guzman added. “You can have most of what you’re looking for by making the choices that are important to you and what you need. You can get there but you have to be honest with yourself and not be shy to tell your story because your story is important.”

In the opening scene of the wildly popular and universally acclaimed “Crazy Rich Asians,” the character Rachel Chu (played by the charming Constance Wu) tells one of her students who lost a poker match, “You were playing to not lose. You have to play to win.” Since it was first announced, “Crazy Rich Asians” --- based on the first book of a trilogy written by Kevin Kwan --- has been playing to win. The summer romantic-comedy opened on Wednesday, August 15, and after a five-day opener, it topped the box office charts and garnered $35.3 million at the box office, proving the cultural impact and bankability of diversity and representation of Asians and Asian Americans in entertainment. Powered by the success of “Crazy Rich Asians,” it was announced Wednesday, Aug. 22 that Warner Bros. is going forth with the development for the film adaptation of “China Rich Girlfriend,” the sequel to “Crazy Rich Asians.” The news of a sequel shouldn’t surprise those who saw “Crazy
Rich Asians” because director Jon M. Chu cleverly included a teaser scene in the middle of the credits that continues the storyline for one of the major characters. The studio has not officially greenlit the sequel, but development will begin. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Chu is likely to return as director for the sequel and screenwriters Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim are also likely to pen the sequel, but no deals have been made yet. According to Warner Bros. Chairman and CeO Kevin Tsujihara, the studio has an option for Kwan’s entire trilogy. Warner Bros.’ announcement comes after a Taiwanese-Filipina led a Care2 petition calling for a sequel to “Crazy Rich Asians” to expand on the cultural impact the film’s representation had on Asian and Asian American audiences. “As a Taiwanese Filipino woman born and raised on American media, the presence of Asian characters in films and television shows that didn’t lead with martial arts or racist cliche were limited at best,” Sydney Wuu said on the petition, which garnered 3,966
supporters of its 4,000 goal. “This groundbreaking film and its success at the box office harkens a new era of representation for Asian actors in film and now is the time to capitalize on it and make sure it grows.” Wuu and the petition signers certainly weren’t the only people who were moved by the film and the impact. Currently touting an impressive 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, the data aggregation site for film critique, “Crazy Rich Asians” is the first film to feature an all-Asian cast since 1993’s “The Joy Luck Club,” and it comes at the heels of a massive industry-wide campaign to diversify all elements of hollywood: casting, behind the scenes work, Academy members and the stories told on screen. “I think it’s because it’s just, it’s at the heart of it, a very universal story. So readers around the world, you know, from India to Switzerland, have been telling me, like, ‘We’re not crazy. We’re not rich. We’re not Asian. But your family is so much like the one, you know, that I live,’” Kwan told ABC news.

Then she’s all set for a busy day until 6 p.m. when she relaxes by, so to speak, shooting the breeze with close friends — that is, if she’s not attending a friend’s birthday dinner or some such special occasion. “Sundays are for my family,” she adds. Arnel Pineda remains humble and unassuming despite his success as the frontman of famous rock band Journey. Pineda recently took to his social media to address some sentiments of fans regarding Steve Perry, Journey’s former lead singer, and his return to the stage this 2018 after being out of the spotlight for many years. Perry, dubbed as “The Voice” in the music scene, decided to permanently leave Journey in 1998. Perry was then replaced by Steve Augeri, formerly of Tyketto and Tall Stories, as the new lead singer of Journey. This, however, only lasted until 2006. Pineda didn’t come into the scene until 2007 when he was hired by Journey after seeing him cover songs of the band on YouTube. Today, Pineda remains as Journey’s lead singer. It’s no secret, too, that Pineda is still the same staunch fan of Perry, taking to his Twitter last Aug. 15 to pay homage to the band’s original singer by sharing Perry’s latest album. “Watch out now tweetyfwends,” Pineda wrote after sharing Perry’s latest album, “Traces”, to be released this October. “From the man w/ #TheVoice I so adore…” Some netizens reacted to Pineda’s tweet, with a certain Rebecca (@shroats) telling Pineda that he is now the voice of Journey. “Steve Perry was the voice of Journey while he was with

them,” wrote the netizen on the same day. “He left. YOU are the voice of Journey now. It’s your time to shine.” Pineda, however, told the commenter that he prefers to be a messenger than a legacy. “Forgive me but I have to disagree with you,” Pineda wrote back. “I’d prefer me a #messenger to a #Legacy.” Another netizen, a certain Karen (@karendunna), told Pineda that he should’ve been included when Journey was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last April 2017. It’s known that Perry reunited briefly with the band for the induction, although chose not to perform with them in respect of Pineda. “Agree 100 [percent] and I think @arnelpineda also should’ve been inducted into the RRHOF,” wrote the netizen. “He earned

Room to Improv was established in 2002 by Elvin Lubrin through the Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture (FPAC), which needed a comedy show to present at its yearly festival, and to offer AAPI aspiring actors and comedians a space of their own to hone their craft in a communal, team-building environment. “Confidence is something that many Asian actors struggle with
when they go on auditions, and that’s something that we try to work on here, to hopefully, help us be more introspective on that front,” Filipino-American Earl Baylon, artistic director of Room to Improv, told the Asian Journal in a conversation with the troupe after the show. Though the cultural landscape of entertainment seems to be shifting to more diversity and representation, especially for AAPI creatives, the nature of the industry is still individualistic, especially in the world of comedy where competition among standup comics, especially comics of color, is the wild west, according to Maikiko James.
“It’s very isolating, it’s so competitive and it’s why things like #MeToo have happened,” James shared. “Like there’s only one spot at the table for us, so you tell yourself, ‘I’m going to put myself through all this bullshit in order to succeed, but there is none of that with this team and the community we perform with. And this is how Hollywood should be. Hollywood shouldn’t pit us against each other, and rather than have us fight for the one Asian role, expand the opportunities for Asians so we can all sit at the table.” Crazy Woke Asians will host another show on Sunday, Sept. 30 at The Three Clubs in Hollywood.
SARAH Geronimo had just turned 30 in late July — and it is a fact that’s quite hard to grasp. In my head, she is still that gauche, 14-year-old belter whose Celine Dion-esque vocals landed her the musical career of a lifetime. She is also still the perpetually wide-eyed, neverbeen-kissed leading lady in many a romcom who always gets her happy ever after. And she is the ever-obedient daughter her parents groomed from childhood to become an artista. But the country’s Popstar has, in fact, become so much more. Her kontesera roots — she’s traded her biritera leanings for a rounder, more soulful sound — and eventual crossover to movies and TV inspired the careers of a dozen more singing contest hopefuls. The aforementioned niche that she created in the movies continually translates to box-office success, too. And her wholesome, family-oriented image? Advertising and PR gold. Fresh from her month-long break and birthday celebration in Japan with long-time boyfriend Matteo Guidicelli, Sarah has been doing the promotional rounds for her upcoming movie Miss Granny. A local adaptation of a 2014 Korean hit, it tells the tale of a frustrated, temperamental widow in her ’70s (played by Nova Villa) who magically transforms into her younger self (Sarah) to nip her lifelong frustrations in the bud. The premise and requirements of the material are admittedly new and a welcome change, having emerged from a decade’s worth feel-good flicks. And despite having love team veterans James Reid and Xian Lim in the cast, she isn’t sticking to formula. “Nandoon ‘yung hunger ko to do something new, to go through a new journey at saka i-explore pa kung anong kaya kong ibigay as an actress,” she says of the role of Fely de Leon. She worked with an acting coach and observed Nova Villa’s own nuances to portray a time-warped 20-something with precision. It’s the kind of challenge she prefers these days — a departure from previous movie roles that were tailor-made for her and written (and rewritten) around her professional limitations. The Trump administration’s plan to block green cards and citizenship for noncitizens who used public assistance programs Your Immigration Solution ATTY. MICHAEL BHOTIWIHOK THE Trump Administration is planning to deny noncitizens either green cards or United States citizenship if an individual used a public assistance program in the past. Crafted by White House Senior Advisor Stephen Miller, this alarming proposal represents another pillar in the Trump Administration’s greater anti-immigrant policy to curb legal immigration in the United States, especially for refugees and asylum seekers, and forge ahead with a merit based immigration policy. As a result, immigrants legally living in the United States who used or whose household members used Obamacare, children’s health insurance, food stamps, or other public benefits (i.e. transportation, housing vouchers and preschool child care) could be blocked from legal permanent residency and United State citizenship. Use of the following public benefits could become problematic for individuals applying for green cards and United States citizenship: Social Security Insurance (“SSI”), Supplemental Assistance Program (“SNAP”), and Children’s Health Insurance Program (“CHIP”). The myth purported by the Trump Administrative focuses on noncitizens being a drain on public resources in the United States. It’s relationship to increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attack and stroke, diabetes T2, and other major illnesses, including cancer, and sudden death, is now more clinically recognized fully. There was a time when even physicians did not know what sleep apnea was as a medical condition. Snoring was obvious, with its breath holding episodes, but not sleep apnea as a condition in itself. About one in five Americans (60 million) have Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Extrapolated figures for Hong Kong is 7 percent, the Philippines, about 4 percent, and in India, 13.7 percent. Ninety percent are undiagnosed, 40 percent of those with high blood pressure have OSA and about 60 percent of those with OSA have high blood pressure. What is sleep apnea? Usually but not always associated with snoring, sleep apnea means the cessation of breathing during sleep. This breath holding initially lasts for 10 seconds and progresses to 20 to 30 seconds, and each episode is immediately

Traditionally, the agencies would consider the totality of the circumstances, which included whether the noncitizen received public assistance, his or her age, capacity to earn of living, health, family situation, work history, affidavits of support, physical condition, and mental condition. A noncitizen is considered a “public charge” if he or she is “likely to become primarily dependent on the government for subsistence, as demonstrated by either 1) the receipt of public cash assistance for income maintenance or 2) institutionalization for long-term-care at government expense.” With this new proposal, the Trump Administration is redefining the definition of “public charge” and expanding it to include immigrants who depend on Government assistance programs. It believes that the proper role of the United States Government is to ensure that legal immigration does not negatively impact existing Americans in the United States. Surprisingly, the Trump Administration may be unintentionally attempting to protect welfare benefits for poor and low-income United States citizens at the expense of those noncitizens entitled to the same public benefits. Clearly, this new proposal continues to create fear in immigrant communities throughout the United States. Further, it will force non-citizens to forgo necessary health care out of fear and
use public benefits designed for individuals in need. This continued anti-immigrant policy shows that the Trump Administration does not want to make American great again, but instead dehumanize America. The pathway to a green card or United States citizenship should not be blocked simply because an individual needed help along the way. It should be noted that this disturbing proposal in its current state would only apply to individuals who utilized public benefits on or after the date that it becomes a rule. However, considering the unpredictability of the Trump Administration’s past immigration policies, noncitizens must stay abreast of the current laws and policies. Any noncitizen who has used a public benefit must consult with an experienced and knowledgeable immigration attorney before applying for legal permanent residency or United States citizenship. “...The saddest thing about life is to be forgotten as though you never lived... floating in an ocean of nothingness. There is no force to push or pull us into a port of call. Without a plan, we hit the doldrums. Without a reason to get up in the morning and seize the day, our body and soul tend to wither away. Such is our nature as human beings. When the purpose that drove our lives for decades, such as the family’s well-being or any other purpose, is gone, we tend to lose our bearings and we begin to drift. Suddenly, no one needs us. No one calls except those darn polling, marketing and political calls asking for donations. UGH!!! No one seems to care. Our sense of self worth dissipates and is gone with the wind. But it does not have to be. If there is anything we learned about life in the trenches, we don’t surrender without a fight. We can harness what we made of ourselves and put our life skills to good use. In short, we adapt to our circumstances or go extinct like the dodo bird. So how does one repurpose one’s life? One way is to set a
new goal. In hitting the bullseye, experts in darts and archery advise to set your aim just a tad higher. The concept probably works the same way in achieving one’s goal during this stage of life. Set a goal bigger than one’s self. A goal bigger than one’s self could be spending time reading to young ones in the library or bringing hot lunch and the Holy Eucharist to the elderly and homebound, or bringing joy to wherever and whomever may appreciate the gesture and spread the cheer in a ripple effect. Or we can write letters of encouragement to those who live in darkness. Get savvy with social media skills and engage in battle. Your 2 cents worth, if reinvested and repeated by like-minded people of light, can resonate and capture minds and hearts and amount to great value over time. We can engage in symbolic or actual skirmishes and battles that abound on earth where there is a perpetual struggle between good PAGE B6
Do you have sleep apnea? followed by gasping for air. As a result the body does not get enough oxygen, and the tissues suffer, leading to various illnesses, including heart attack, diabetes, and cancer, sometimes sudden death. This cycle could repeat itself several times (20 to 100 times per hour) the whole night long. The snorer is totally oblivious of all this and only the roommate is aware of this bothersome snoring and scary sleep apnea. The bed partner is also adversely affected and is also deprived of a good restful sleep. This is why snoring could be a legal ground for a divorce. What are the types of sleep apnea? There are two types: Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). CSA is much less common, less than 10 percent of cases comprises this group, and is due to the brain’s failure to send a signal for the person to breathe. This can happen among individuals with cardiac or neurological diseases. In OSA, part of the back of the throat collapses and blocks the airway during sleep, preventing airflow to the lungs. This causes decreased oxygenation and a low blood oxygen level, which is unhealthy. What side effects does sleep apnea have? The person wakes up with a dry mouth and throat, perhaps with a headache, and a lousy feeling akin to a hungover. There may also be
fatigue and sleepiness throughout the day, together with some memory deficiency, poor attention and concentration, and bad mood— all signs of lack of sleep, due to sleep apnea. The psychological stress of all this impacts negatively on the individual and the bed partner. The recurrent transient hypoxemia (low blood oxygen level) and daily impairment of sleep are added risk factors for the development of hypertension and coronary heart disease, cancer, and even sudden death. What causes snoring? In some people, especially after middle age, the muscles of the upper airways in the back of the throat, like the soft palate (the back end of the roof of the mouth), the uvula (tiny appendage that hangs down), tonsils, adenoids, become flabby and vibrate with the airflow, causing the various classical noises of snoring. They also cave in and out (like a floppy valve) with respiration, blocking the upper airway and causing sleep apnea. Not all snorers have OSA. A Sleep Study is essential to confirm the presence of OSA or not. Are “snore stoppers” effective? “Snore aids” advertised in the various media, such as nostril clips, nasal or throat sprays, magnetic wrist bands DO NOT work to stop snoring, much less cure sleep disorders. THE start of a new season means different things to different people. But as a hair expert, it primarily means one thing for me: new season equals new haircut. As you embrace the arrival of autumn, it’s the best time to hit up the salon and get your fall season haircut. But before you do, check out these chicest hairstyles and cut. Based on my opinion, these are the six best “hair-looks” that are suitable for both men and women this season. Let me start with the ladies. The bob cut Seventy percent of my customers would request this type of cut for either of the following reasons: a new phase in their life (a relationship status-change or a new job), want a new look to reinvent themselves, or just because someone they know— and like— is sporting it. Your reasons may or may not fall under any of the aforementioned categories, but you are definitely in the best season to get a bob cut. There is one thing you need to remember if you’re interested in trying a bob like Keira Knightley, Ginnifer Goodwin or Rachel McAdams. You have to be prepared for the attention—or the shock (if you had long hair)—that this haircut draws. Know that this cut makes a serious statement. Don’t dare if you can’t take the heat. Also, you have to manage your hair’s density with this look, or else the bob will look like a mushroom. Grown-out Lob According to Marie Claire’s “20 Chicest Lobs of the Year,” ‘The Lob was this year’s tour de force cut.’ But while it is lovely, it is also way too much work to blow out the strands as regularly as the LA traffic permits. Don’t worry, I have good news! You can still grow your Lob and look like you just stepped out of the salon every time. Ask your stylist to texturize your mane for body and movement. You can also add some beachy waves to this cut. That is what’s great about a grown-out lob, you can style it in a variety of ways and it still looks chic. One renowned stylist’s reminder: “Use a combination of oil and hold products to blow dry,” he suggested, “and style with a flat iron to add bend.” Choppy and messy Since we are on the subject of

The Mixie Mixie is portmanteau for midlength pixie. This haircut is best suited for fine to normal strands that are straight. I suggest this cut for those who aren’t ready for a super short style but want something short yet feminine. For the men After the goddesses, we move on to the gods of a killer haircut. And what easier way to describe the famous cuts is to name the celebrities who are sporting such looks. Allow me to borrow and coin the styles with their names. The “Ryan Gosling” cut Google it if you don’t agree with me, but I must say this style is suited for any face or hair type. Ask your stylist for something high and tight on the side. Make the top about an inch longer and polish the look by combing it with a matte pomade. I must warn you: this is a head-turner look. Proceed with caution.
The “Chris Pine” cut If you’ve seen “Star Trek,” you pretty much have an idea of your new look sans the highlights. Rock the “Chris Pine” cut by going shorter and with much tight on the sides. And please make sure you go easy on the pomade or you just might become the next most eligible bachelor. For curly hair I also have a recommended cut for those who have curly hair. This is also for those who want a more modest, subtle and less-attentiongrabbing look. If you’ve got curly hair and a more angular face, go with a round cut. You’re going to have to ask your stylist to cut about a half an inch longer on top than on the sides for best results. And there you have it, ladies and gentlemen. I have observed with fascination that those who welcome retirement years with a zestful purpose bigger than themselves and their needs seem the hap-
piest. The dividend is that they enjoy longer, healthier lives. They seem to have found a way to circumvent the laws of nature for the time being staving off the body’s time clock as long as possible. The argument they give to their Maker is that their lives are still useful to do His will. Those passionate about living may even pray to God and beg: “Will you Lord, pretty, pretty please let me
hang on for dear life just a little while longer? Celebrating a symbolic age while filming a movie that tackles FOMO and other forms of regret offers a lot to contemplate. When asked if she can relate to her Miss Granny character, she nods but mulls the question over before mouthing a reply. “May mga bagay na hindi mo na maibabalik pero kaya pang habulin. It’s never too late to learn new things kahit na sana natutunan ko nung mas bata pa ako. May mga bagay na plan ni Lord, choice ko, at ng mga nasa paligid ko na hindi ko na-experience pero okay lang.” She zeroes in on school, alluding to a time spent lining up at auditions and joining singing contents while other kids were learning inside the classroom all day. “Sana nung elementary at high school, nag-seryoso ako sa pag-aaral kaso nga, nag-aartista na ako bata pa lang. Ang dami kong absences at hindi nakapag focus sa pag-aaral.” But she insists, “Sabi ko nga sa mga nakababata, napaka-importante na seryosohin ang pag-aaral. Hindi para sa grades kung hindi para sa sarili.” Furthermore, she admits to having a cocktail of emotions as she treads the path of mature adulthood. “I still feel like a kid pero trenta na ako. Kailangang i-brush off ko na ang pagiging bata kaso masarap na nakikita ang mundo sa mata ng bata: the simpler things in life, appreciat-
ing and finding joy in them.” Even then, the girl who grew up with a completely different kind of normal assures, “Experiences are important. Not until dumaan ka sa situation that you have to do it on your own, ‘di ka matututo. Pero maturity cannot be forced, (it is gained) through time, at hindi lang dahil trenta ka na.” She credits Viva head Vic del Rosario who first discerned that she is a kid no more. “Boss Vic is open to the changes (in me) and to me making my own decisions when it comes to my career. He is understanding, sobra na nga! Parang tatay.” Part of his assessment is to allow her ward as much time she needs for rest and relaxation. Sarah’s onstage emotional breakdown — ironically, in the middle of her signature hit Forever’s Not Enough — during the Las Vegas leg of her 15th anniversary tour in April came as a shock to fans and the general public. “Di lang naman physical ’yung exhaustion. Lahat po tayo dumadaan sa experience na ma-de-drain at mabu-burnout ka,” she looks back, now fully recovered. Her life events this year made her take stock of her life and strive for a balance between the personal and professional. “It’s a process but I am not saying narating ko na ang pagiging stable (sa trabaho),” she ruminates. “There are times that I ask, ‘What more can I offer? What’s my next move? What can I do to stay relevant?’ Minsan, I am shaken. Pero bumabalik ako sa core ko, sa anong kaya
ko ibigay.” Sarah had just come from an evening of performing with her mentor and Star for a Night host Regine Velasquez at a corporate event for a BPO. Seeing the previous night’s applauded performance on Viva’s Youtube, a medley of Regine’s greatest hits that they originally rendered during the Songbird’s 30th anniversary concert in 2017, brought to mind what Regine thinks of her junior. Asked who she thought would bridge Original Pilipino Music to the future, she nominated Sarah immediately. “She is a superstar. Siya na ‘yan ‘eh! This is her generation. This is her time,” she declared in an interview with Preview.ph. Sarah, obviously uncomfortable praise, facepalms. “Grabe naman ‘yon!” she said, her pitch gradually higher than usual. “Pero naiintindihan ko siya na kung panahon mo, go lang ng go. Naiintindihan ko na may kanya-kanya tayong time.” She enumerates other singing contest winners that came after her to prove her point and divert the attention away from her — Rachelle Ann Go, Erik Santos, among others — but it was an effort exerted in vain. Asked what else she has lined up after Miss Granny, the birthday girl does not give much details. But inadvertently, she shared where she and her brand are headed in the years to come. “Hopefully, more projects na makaka-inspire. ‘Yun na ’yung platform ko, eh. Bakit pa ako lilihis?”

Last July 29, at her New Manila residence in Quezon City, Pempe Oreta hosted a quintuple celebration for the June- and July-born namely her brother lawyer King Rodrigo (with wife Boots Anson in tow), Liberty Ilagan (ex-wife of restaurateur Rod Ongpauco of the famous Barrio Fiesta chain), Lollie Mara (mother of former actor Lorenzo or Tata), Baby O’Brien (daughter of the late Paraluman and mother of erstwhile sexy star Rina Reyes) and certainly not the least, Queen of Philippine Movies Susan Roces. “Balik-Samahan has been for more than 10 years now with Pempe’s house and the Sampaguita Gardens (of the Vera-Perez) as alternating venues. So you can just imagine how many times a year these veteran stars get together,” an attendee-source told

This could be avoided by placing a pillow at the back and lying on the side. What is the standard of care for OSA? The standard of care today includes confirming the diagnosis of OSA with a Sleep Study, and when confirmed, use of a CPAP machine while asleep, with pressure tailored to each individual person based on data obtained during the Sleep Study. What is the surgical treatment? Surgery removes tissues, like nasal polyps, adenoids, tonsils, and any oro-pharyngeal deformities that cause obstruction to airflow. One of them is called uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, which excises tissues at the back of the throat. The success rate is low, between 30-60 percent and it is hard to know which patients will benefit from it, side effects and eventual outcome. However, today, the standard treatment, which is less invasive than surgery and more effective, is the use of CPAP machine. Only severe anatomical deformities require surgery. What are the adverse effects of OSA?? Obstructive Sleep Apnea increases the risk for a variety of medical ailments, heart diseases and cardiac failure, diabetes, stroke, and others conditions like arthritis, acid reflux in the esophagus (food pipe), Alzheimer’s, and even cancer, not to mention sometimes sudden death. Anxiety disorders and depression are also associated with sleep disturbances, not to mention poor performance
at work and at home due to fatigue from lack of rest and poor body oxygenation. Consultation with a sleep specialist is critical for proper diagnosis and management of these disorders. What is Overlap Syndrome? This new entity is the combination of COPD (Chronic Obstructed Pulmonary Disease, seen among smokers and also among those with chronic gastric acid reflux disease) and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Their treatments are individualized, entity-specific, and simultaneously done for better success. More clinical studies are being done on this entity.
