MANILA — The executive department’s withdrawal of the Philippines’ membership in the International Criminal Court is facing another challenge at the Supreme Court. The Philippine Coalition for the International Criminal Court, chaired by Etta Rosales, on Wednesday filed a 51-page petition urging the SC to declare as void the Philippine Notice of Withdrawal from the ICC, due to lack of parliamentary approval from the Senate. The PCICC, a non-government organization whose members “campaigned for the
Philippines to become a State Party to the Rome Statue.” This is the second petition assailing the Philippines’ withdrawal from the Rome Statute. Minority senators, led by Sen. Francis Pangilinan, filed in May a petition also challenging the country’s withdrawal from the international tribunal. The petitioners claim that the chief executive’s decision was “based on capricious, whimsical, ridiculous, misleading or misled, incoherent and/or patently false grounds, with no basis in fact, law or jurisprudence.” They noted that the withdrawal of the country’s

MAJORITY of Filipinos are satisfied with how democracy works in the Philippines, according to the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey released on Independence Day, June 12. The first quarter survey, conducted from March 23 to 27, showed that 78 percent of adult Filipinos were satisfied with democracy. This was two points lower than the 80 percent recorded in the June 2017 survey and a point lower than the June 2016 poll, the SWS said. Satisfaction with the way democracy works reached a record high in September 2016 at 86
percent. It hit 80 percent in June 2013. “In contrast, satisfaction with the way democracy works was a disappointing 44 percent in June 2004, after the presidential elections of that year,” the SWS said. The same survey said 60 percent of the respondents preferred democracy than any other kind of government. Preference for democracy reached a record high at 65 percent in June 2013 and 61 percent in June 2017. “It has been above 50 percent since February 2009, reaching a record-high 65 percent in June 2013,” the SWS said.

commission of the most heinous international crimes against its own citizens.” The ICC has started a preliminary examination into the alleged crimes against humanity committed by the Duterte administration in the conduct of its crackdown against the illegal drug trade. The preliminary examination stemmed from the communication sent by Jude Sabio, lawyer
of self-proclaimed Davao death squad member Edgar Matobato. The lawyer claimed that Duterte was behind the killing of 1,400 people in Davao City and 7,000 drug suspects nationwide. The petitioners also accused Duterte of committing grave abuse of discretion when he “unilaterally” decided to withdraw the country’s membership. Duterte’s act, according to the petitioners, violated the Constitutional system of checks and balances in treaty-making under Article VIII, Sec. 21 of the 1987 Charter. They stressed while the president is the chief architect of our foreign policy, Duterte’s order “runs against an expressed legislative policy” prescribed also in the International Humanitarian Law. Literally,” the president said. “Do not destroy the youth of this land. That’s our capital.” He lamented that some people are destroying lives “in the name of the altar of greed.” “And then you will cite human rights? That will be difficult. You impeach me or kill me. But I won’t allow it to remain that way... You just pinpoint the ones I killed? That’s the numbers?” he said, referring to allegations that his war on drugs violates human rights and encourages extrajudicial killings. “What ails this nation? Numbers. The ones I killed? What is behind that? How many families were destroyed?” the president stressed. He also noted that he remains committed to curbing corruption in government, citing the number of officials he has dismissed for alleged irregularities. “I have fired so many and will continue to fire everybody... This is not a political – it’s a lesson of history. I’ve been trying to say it,” he added. The president also reiterated his promise to talk to communist and Moro rebels to put an end to the country’s insurgency problem. He said he has invited Communist Party of the Philippines founding chairman Jose Maria Sison to come home to join the peace talks.
“This I will guarantee to those from the Left. If the talks... with the Communist Party of the Philippines (do not succeed), I will keep my word, word of honor, I will bring Maria Sison to the airport,” Duterte said. “Now as to his coming back, that’s out of the question. Because he has cases. That’s what I will do. I’m willing to walk the extra mile to have peace in our land.” Duterte also expressed hopes that the Bangsamoro Basic Law, which seeks to create a new Bangsamoro political entity with enhanced autonomy, would be passed by Congress. The ceremony in Kawit, Cavite – where former president Emilio Aguinaldo declared independence from Spain – was the first Independence Day celebration he attended as President. He skipped last year’s celebration because he was not feeling well. In Rizal Park in Manila, Vice President Leni Robredo called on Filipinos to fight for their hard-won freedom every day amid continued threats to their rights. It was the second time she led the Independence Day celebration since her election to office. “Those who came before us fought hard for the rights that we are enjoying now. We have the obligation to continue fighting for it,” she said. Robredo said the country’s independence appears to be under threat, citing the persistent problem of poverty, the spiraling prices of basic commodities, the disregard of human rights and
invasion of foreign countries on Philippine territories. “The Filipinos I know are the Filipinos who stand firm to fight for the country’s freedom,” she said. Leaders and members of both chambers of Congress called on Filipinos to continue defending the country’s independence amid threats to its sovereignty and issues on human rights. Senate President Vicente Sotto III said Philippine independence “has never been stronger,” noting that the Duterte administration continues to wean the country away from traditional allies and expand its economic ties to other nations. “Now that globalization is in full swing and we are friendly with other trading global partners, change is inevitable. Adam B. Schiff (DCalif.), adding that North Korea was still in possession of its nuclear missiles and that the promise was still vague. “North Korea is a real and present threat. So is a dangerously naive president.” Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.), also highlighting North Korea’s possession of nuclear weapons and intercontinental ballistic missiles, said the U.S. was still in danger. “What planet is the president on?,” asked Schumer on the Senate floor. “Somehow President Trump thinks when he says something it becomes reality. If it were only that easy, only that simple.” But House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) said Wednesday that Trump deserves credit for the meeting which was the first to have happened between a North Korean leader and sitting U.S. president. “The status quo was not working with North Korea,” Ryan told reporters. “The president should be applauded for disrupting the status quo.” Acknowledging North Korea’s volatile past, he added that the U.S. should be “under no illusion of our experiences with North Korea” which he called a “terrible regime.” “They’ve done terrible things and they’ve been deceitful in the past,” said Ryan. “But it’s really important that we disrupt the status quo like the president has,” he added. He further said that he was “encouraged” by the denuclearization negotiations being done between North Korea and Pompeo, also adding that “We should be under no illusion that it’s going to be fast.” Trump and Kim at the Tuesday, June 12 meeting signed a broad statement calling for a “firm and unwavering commitment to
complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.” Trump described the meeting in earlier tweets as “an interesting and very positive experience.” While not much detail was provided for the denuclearization process, he said they were starting the process “very, very quickly.” One sudden step already taken has been Trump’s announcement that the U.S. military would halt joint military exercises with South Korea which have taken place since the 1970s and have long aggravated North Korea. “We will be stopping the war games, which will save us a tremendous amount of money,” said Trump. “Plus I think it is very provocative. South Korean President Moon Jae-in — seemingly caught by surprise — responded by saying, “At this moment, we need to figure out President Trump’s accurate meaning and intention.” North Korea’s state-run media was quick to report on the meeting — hailing the summit a success. The nation’s Rodong Sinmun vaguely reported the nuclear dismantling process as a “stepby-step” process. Official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported Kim saying “Singapore is clean and beautiful and every building is stylish as he heard of i the past, adding he is going to learn a lot from the good knowledge and experience of Singapore in various fields in the future.” Among the U.S. Delegation was Department of State Secretary Mike Pompeo; White House Chief of Staff, General John Kelly; National Security Advisor, Ambassador John Bolton; Press Secretary Sarah Sanders; U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines, Sung Kim; and Deputy Assistant to the President for Asian Affairs, Matthew Pottinger. Amidst an ongoing trade war
with allied nations, Trump threatened to stop trades with countries that did not remove tariffs on U.S. goods — a move he said was a “very profitable answer.” “We have a tremendous trade imbalance,” said Trump during a Saturday press conference following the G7. “With one country, we have $375 billion in trade deficits.” Trump has imposed tariffs on aluminum and steel from Canada, Mexico, and the European Union in recent weeks. Just days before the G7, Trump in a tweet, accused Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron of “charging the U.S. massive tariffs and creating non-monetary barriers.” Further adding fuel to flame, Trump tweeted Saturday that he had instructed U.S. representatives not to endorse the G7 communique that had been made out at the summit. This, after Trudeau said that Canada would go through with retaliatory tariffs on July 1. He said he told Trump that “it would be with regret but it would be with absolute clarity and firmness that we move forward with retaliatory measures on July 1, applying equivalent tariffs to the ones that the Americans have unjustly applied to us.” “Canadians, we’re polite, we’re reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around,” said Trudeau. Trump also at the G7, called for Russia to be readmitted into the G7, despite Russia’s occupation in Crimea. “I think it would be an asset to have Russia back in,” said Trump at a press conference at the summit. “I think it would be good for the world. I think it would be good for Russia. I think it would be good for the United States. I think it would be good for all of the countries of the current G7. Trump and Kim met in Singapore on Tuesday in what the U.S. leader described as a summit that helped bring back the world from a possible “nuclear catastrophe.”
Trump said there have been “lot of progress” after the talk as the two leaders signed a document, which has not been made public yet. Roque said the Philippines was ready to support outcome of the summit, saying it was “the beginning of a process.” “History has indeed been written. A YOUNG Filipino-American man connected with the robbery, kidnapping, and murder of a 20 year-old in Azusa, California last month is still on the loose, said officials on Wednesday, June 6. Matthew Luzon Martin-Capiendo, a 21 year-old Fil-Am, remains wanted following the brutal beating and murder of Julian Hamori-Andrade, 20, on May 28. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department released two images of murder suspect Matthew Martin Capiendo Luzon, one depicting him if his head were shaved.
Martin-Capiendo’s wanted poster describes him as Filipino, 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing 220 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Authorities say he may have also shaved his head. Also known to have gone by the names Matthew Martin, Matt Martin, and Matt Luzon, authorities said Martin-Capiendo is aware he is wanted is considered armed and dangerous. Already charged for the murder are 19 year-olds Hercules Balaskas, Jacob Elmendorf, and Francisco Amigon. The three appeared in court and were charged along with Martin-Capiendo, with first-degree murder, first degree residential robbery, and kidnapping. Arraignment is slated to continue to June 28. If convicted, they face the death penalty or life in prison without parole. A “large amount of blood” was found at a home on the 6100 block of Goodwin Drive in unincorporated Azusa where investigators believe Hamori-Andrade was beaten. 120 years of independence THE country celebrated its Independence Day on Tuesday, June 12 as another country is occupying a Philippine reef, patrolling the Philippines’ maritime exclusive economic zone, and confiscating the catch of Filipinos fishing in a shoal within that EEZ. As part of its responses, the Philippine government even allows a Chinese military plane — possibly used to patrol the South China Sea — to refuel in Davao. This weakness aptly reflects the circumstances surrounding the event 120 years ago that is being celebrated today: the founders of the Philippine republic’s declaration of independence from foreign rule as an American naval armada sat in Manila Bay, while Spain was negotiating the sale of its colony to the United States for $20 million. For the next half-century, the Philippines would be a commonwealth under the U.S. Clearly, declaring independence must be supported by realities on the ground. Aside from political independence, a sovereign state must be able to protect that sovereignty by developing minimum
credible defense capability. While defense alliances are important, they should not mean dependence on others for one’s own defense. It’s a healthy foreign policy; even the country’s allies will appreciate it. The Duterte administration has issued statements in this direction, but it must be backed by the necessary resources. National defense — even minimum credible defense — does not come cheap. An independent foreign policy, backed by minimum credible defense capability, is best supported by a robust economy. China managed to become a 21st century military power because of its phenomenal economic growth within the past four decades. A prosperous state can afford to stand on its own feet, becoming as self-reliant as globalization will allow it, and undoubtedly independent. (Philstar.com)

RICARDO SALUDO RECENTLY, two defense experts from opposite sides of the world spoke of war with China. In Washington, Admiral Philip Davidson, the new chief of the Pacific Command in Hawaii, wrote to the U.S. Congress that with its three man-made islands in the Spratlys, “China is now capable of controlling the South China Sea in all scenarios short of war with the United States.” Then, in Manila, Arroyo-era Defense Secretary and National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales raised the possibility of Chinese invasion. “China does not have a history of invading other countries, but it is not averse to using military might to settle territorial conflicts,” he wrote to Rappler. “A Chinese invasion is not unthinkable.” Gonzales cites a possible Beijing concern over President Rodrigo Duterte ending his term in 2022, which may then lead to a new leadership hostile to China. If there were an invasion, he predicted that “within hours, the Chinese can destroy most of the country’s defense facilities and probably some of our cities.” Let’s assess these comments and see if they hold water. In this assessment, it’s crucial to set aside biases and leanings for or against certain countries, so one can coldly weigh the geopolitical, security, and other factors in play.
But as Trump alienates the U.S. from the allies of the United States, he has become cozy with our adversaries and dictators who do not value democratic principles, human rights, and basic decency. Trump wouldn’t call out Russian President Vladimir Putin even after Russia’s interference in the 2016 U.S. Presidential Elections and continued meddling in the 2018 and 2020 elections. It took him forever to impose new sanctions for Russia’s meddling not only in our elections but also in our power grids. He would hail Putin for being a strong leader and would want to nurture a relationship with our number one political foe. And, he even advocated to include Putin back in the G-7 group despite the sanctions! During the campaign, Trump would lambast China for bad business prac-
tices, currency manipulation, etc., but when elected, he invited President Xi JinPing to Maralago and bonded with him, and even expressed that maybe America should emulate China’s ending term limits for president. Then, he lifted sanctions against Chinese company ZTE to “help save jobs for China”. And just last June 12, six months after his kindergarten playground fire and fury war of words against North Korean President Kim Jong-un, Trump legitimized the young dictator by meeting with him in Singapore for the historic summit, the first time a sitting U.S. president met and shook hands with the North Korean dictator. He sung praises for Kim and honored him without getting much in return for the U.S. other than to talk about the promised denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, without details about time
frame and measure of compliance and fulfillment of such promise. Don’t get me wrong. I am very much for peace talks. BUT what is really troubling here is the kind of diplomacy and international relations Trump has been breaking and forging, and the true spirit behind these actions. Could Trump supporters please make sense of this? How would this help the United States of America? How would these help American workers, farmers and manufacturers? How would these actions help our economy? Will there be war with China? Let’s hope not
Will the Chinese invade? Gonzales cited Beijing’s fear of Duterte’s successor reversing his friendship with China. Can it happen? Well, it did when thenPresident Benigno Aquino 3rd ended his predecessor Gloria Arroyo’s cordial relations with Beijing. Arroyo had eased tensions by, among other things, quietly dealing with Chinese fishermen caught in the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone. But Aquino did the opposite, sending a navy frigate to arrest Chinese fishermen in Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal, which he lost in the ensuring confrontation with China in April 2012. To counter Chinese encroachment, Aquino forged the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) in 2014, to escalate American military deployment in the country, and give U.S. forces access to our bases. President Duterte has stalled EDCA implementation, rightly fearing that U.S. forces in the country would attract foreign attack. Indeed, if America had facilities in the archipelago, they would have been threatened by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in his 2016-2017 brinkmanship with the U.S. over his nuclear and ballistic weapons. The Philippine threat to China So, will China invade if it looks like the next administration would revive EDCA and allow the Philippines to become a platform for the 60 percent of U.S. naval assets Washington wants to move to the region under its Pivot to Asia policy? From our country, nuclearcapable cruise missiles can strike most of China and all of
the South China Sea, where vital commodities pass, including 80 percent of Chinese oil imports. Indeed, fear of the U.S. military buildup in the Philippines probably led the People’s Liberation Army to turn reefs into man-made islands ready for PLA use. That the U.S. aims to use Philippine bases in conflicts elsewhere in Asia can be gleaned from its first EDCA facility at the Cesar Basa Air Base in Pampanga, closest to potential flashpoints in Korea, Taiwan, and the Senkaku/Diaoyutai islands, held by Japan but also claimed by China. The Pampanga facility is not as helpful as other bases earmarked under EDCA, especially where the Philippines needs U.S. assistance most: maritime frictions in the Spratlys, to which the Puerto Princesa air base is closest; and disaster relief in the Visayas and Mindanao, where Cebu and Cagayan de Oro are best situated. If EDCA can provoke Chinese attack, why doesn’t President Duterte abrogate it? He can do that on his own, since EDCA is not a treaty, but an executive agreement, as the Supreme Court had long affirmed. Maybe Duterte is keeping EDCA as an option, even allowing some construction, to serve notice he can let U.S. forces in if the Chinese move too aggressively. For now, though, China relations are solid, while EDCA is stalled. Attack, maybe; invasion, no But if the Philippines does let U.S. forces deploy massively, China will respond. For starters, there will be warnings about harboring forces threatening China. Economic pressure comes next.

Chinese aid, credit, and investment will dry up, and trade restrictions will multiply. So might curbs on overseas Filipino workers, including more than 120,000 in Hong Kong. The PLA can escalate deployment in waters around the Philippines, even the Pacific, including Philippine Rise. Meanwhile, cooperation on such concerns as drugs, transnational crime, and piracy might grind to a halt. And China’s immense diplomatic clout, as the leading trading partner and funding source of most nations, could further put the squeeze on the Philippines. This scenario is not specu-
lation; the U.S. did worse to Cuba for half a century after the island nearly hosted Russian nuclear missiles in 1962. Don’t expect easier treatment if we bring in American forces capable of nuking China and blocking its access to oil and gas — a war strategy urged by the 2016 U.S. Army-sponsored RAND think-tank report, “War with China: Thinking Through the Unthinkable.” The report also warned that primary wartime targets would be American aircraft carriers and air bases in Asia. That would include facilities in Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, Puerto Princesa, Basa Air Base, and Fort Magsaysay in Nueva Eci-
ja, if EDCA goes ahead. Will Beijing mount an invasion, too, as Washington tried but failed in Cuba? No, mainly because America and its allies would wage full-scale war to prevent the Philippines falling into China’s hands and becoming its regional military platform. Against Western and Japanese naval and air forces, any invading force would be crushed even before it landed. Given the foregoing scenario, the Philippines must keep foreign forces out, enhance ties with all powers, and build our own defense capabilities. Exactly what President Duterte is doing. Former National Security Adviser Roilo Golez spent his last hours on Monday, June 11, defending the Philippines’ sovereignty in the South China Sea. In an interview on dzRH radio early on Monday, which he also posted live on his Facebook page, Golez, a former Philippine Navy officer and member of the House of Representatives, urged the Duterte administration to be transparent in its dealings with China, following a series of aggressive moves by Beijing in the South China Sea, including deploying weapons on reefs claimed by Manila in the Spratly Islands and landing long-range bombers on
Woody Island in the Paracel archipelago, from where the country is within the planes’ fighting range. Golez also spoke about the Filipinos’ concerns over the landing of a People’s Liberation Army Air Force transport plane last week in Davao City, President Duterte’s hometown. It’s not easy to comprehend the unexpected trials and tribulations life throws at us. Grief through the loss of a loved one is one of the the most difficult, confusing emotions to deal with and understand, and it takes work to process certain experiences and to, somehow, make good out of tragedy. Filipino-American Benjamin Nittayo, a recent graduate from Cal state Los Angeles, took a tragedy and decided to serve the world in a magnificent, selfless way. After his father passed away from acute myeloid leukemia, Nittayo, 24, was motivated to pursue cancer research to help develop vaccines, therapies and treatments for cancer patients. “Once I had that experience, I knew I wanted to find ways to help advance cancer research and medical research in general,” Nittayo shared with the Asian Journal in a recent interview. His path toward a career in health care began at Pasadena Community College (PCC). As a student, he clocked in more than
700 volunteer hours at hospitals like the Adventist Health Glendale and the Methodist Hospital of southern California in Arcadia, shadowing doctors and having plenty of facetime with patients undergoing illnesses that ranged from benign to acute. Although he appreciated the work and learned a lot from volunteering, the experience of working long hours and its physical and mental toll discouraged him from a career as a clinician, and it wasn’t until he began research in college that his ambition to work in biomedical research really came into focus. “It took a big toll on me. I’d be at the hospital from four to eight hours and the day would just drag,” Nittayo said. “I was always looking for some other alternative, and then I started doing research and I said maybe I can make a career out of this, and a lot of people do.” It was around the time that he transferred to Cal state LA that his father was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome

(MDs) and, eventually, got a bone marrow transplant which was rejected by his body, resulting in graft versus host disease (GvHD). Just as he was about to undergo a second bone marrow transplant, he caught a flu virus in the winter of 2015 that turned the MDs into “full-blown leukemia.” the doctors told the Nittayo family that he had six more months, but passed away about a month later. During his father’s last few weeks, Nittayo spent as much time as he could with his father, dropping out of school to accompany him while he had blood infusions. “We both knew, in a way, that this wasn’t going to end well but we just talked about whatever was on our mind,” Nittayo said. “We never really acknowledged it, but I think he knew in his mind that it wasn’t going to end well. so we just talked, and one thing he really wanted me to do was to go back to school.”
Nittayo recalled, “I was with him in the last moments, and I told him, ‘I love you,’ but at that point I don’t know exactly what he understood, but then he told me that he loved me, too, and I think that was the last coherent thing he told me.” Building on his father’s request, Nittayo went back to school and, this past May, graduated from Cal state LA with a Bachelor of science in Biology with a minor in Microbiology. But Nittayo didn’t just finish school doing the bare minimum. In addition to amassing hours of volunteering, Nittayo was a research intern at the City of Hope in the Department of Experimental therapeutics through the competitive Eugene and Ruth Roberts summer student Academy. He also received two research fellowships through Minority Opportunities in Research (MORE) programs and also served as vice PAGE B3

In the 1920s and 30s, there was a national movement to get rid of Mother’s and Father’s Day and instead have a one “Parent’s Day,” according to History.com. Many fathers were not receptive to the day because they felt that the holiday was “emasculating,” while others didn’t like that the gifts given to them were likely bought with the fathers’ own money and was another attempt at a commercialized holiday. In 1956, Congress officially recognized the day with the passage of a joint resolution. ten years later, President Lyndon Johnson proclaimed the third sunday of June to be recognized for the holiday; in 1972, President Richard Nixon permanently established the observance of the third sunday in June as Father’s Day in the United states. today, Father’s Day is celebrated all over the world, with several countries similarly marking the

“Ocean’s 8” — the third incarnation of the “Ocean” franchise — after Frank sinatra and the Rat Pack back in 1960, then George clooney and his posse back in 2001 — is back on the silver screen with an all-star, all-female cast led by sandra Bullock. six of the cast members — Bullock, cate Blanchett, anne Hathaway, sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling and awkwafina — made it back to new York, to the scene of the crime to be exact, one fine day a couple of weeks ago. It was for the film’s press conference and photo call for international and national entertainment journalists so we were mixed with colleagues from across the globe like Japan, chile and Italy. The idea of an all-female Ocean’s film came six years ago, after “The Hunger Games”, said Gary Ross who directed the movie. Ross said he found himself wanting to explore more films starring powerful, female protagonists with complex upbringings and brought his idea to the director of the “Ocean’s” trilogy, steven soderbergh. The six actresses, along with Ross and his co-screenwriter Olivia Milch, gamely responded to the media’s questions at the presscon held at the Temple of Dendur of the Metropolitan Museum of arts in new York, right at the scene of the heist staged during one of new York’s most coveted and covered events, the annual costume Institute Benefit at The Met or more famously known as The Met Gala.
One of the issues discussed was the diversity of the cast. “We’re celebrating eight distinct women from eight distinct backgrounds, and this is what the world looks like, not just what Hollywood has made the world look like,” Ross said. Written by Gerald mark Foliente and directed by Jose Javier Reyes, “Walwal” stars donny Pangilinan, elmo magalona, Jerome Ponce and Kiko estrada (along with Jane de Leon, devon seron, sophia senoron and Kisses delavin). Let’s lend an ear to the four male millennials. What does the word “walwal” mean to you as a person (and how “walwal” can you get)? donny: Walwal is basically about forgetting everything and living in the moment. elmo: To me, walwal can be a lot of things, but the most meaning it has is to let loose. To let yourself be loose in life, to be immersed in all the things you tackle. As a person, i try to apply this mentality as much as possible. i try to be a happy-go-lucky person most of the time. Jerome: For me, ang meaning ng word “walwal” is magulo like rollercoaster sa mga nangyayari and at the same time, nage-enjoy na bina-balewala. Kiko: Well, for me, the term walwal is going all out. Describe your role and how you identify with it. donny: i am Bobby, the eye of the group, an aspiring filmmaker. i want to be the next Brillante mendoza. A lot of people doubt that i can succeed. But i believe in myself. elmo: i play as dondi, the wannabe-lawyer of the group. in terms of his goals in life, he’s very ambitious but also scared at the same time, to the point that he only always follows what people expect him to be. his father always puts it in his mind that he “should be like this” and because of this, he doesn’t know how to approach his dad and politely informs him that he wants to pursue something else. in terms of love, he is a closeminded person, just as closeminded as everything else he sees in life. and Bobby, it’s something that is really solid. making the film, i completely believe that we were a barkada or a group of friends who grew up together. in fact, in some of our scenes, i felt like i was really back in my high school days, because i remembered some of my friends in them.? The character back story was that he grew up with a mom. The character lacks a father figure. so you can now imply that he is afraid of commitment because of his parents’ failed relationship. Luckily enough, my mom in the film is my real mom (Cheska diaz) so things were easier on the set. i relate to marco in a way that i try to understand and not judge him and somewhat instill some of me but not too much to avoid messing up the uniqueness of the character. How was it being directed by Joey Javier Reyes? donny: A blessing. he gave us so much freedom to express ourselves and go beyond the script. he was my mom’s director in her best movies, and it was such a privilege to be under him this time. elmo: if i recall it right, the casting for this movie was handpicked, and direk Joey really chose us for the parts. it’s such an honor that someone like him did that. Working with him, i think he’s a great director, truly deserving to be respected, and i’m so happy and thankful to be a part of this wonderful project.? Jerome: Direk Joey is a very jolly person who is really passionate when it comes to his craft as a director. DEERFIELD, Ill., - Walgreens on Monday, June 11, announced it has reached 1,000 safe medication disposal kiosk installations at its drugstores nationwide. Joining company officials to mark the milestone at one of its Las Vegas stores was Governor Brian Sandoval of Nevada, where Walgreens has expanded its safe medication disposal kiosks this year to 12 drugstores throughout Nevada. The first of its kind program to allow for safe medication disposal in a drugstore setting allows individuals to safely and conveniently dispose of their unwanted, unused or expired prescriptions, including controlled substances, and over-the-counter medications, year-round at no cost. The kiosks are available during regular pharmacy hours and offer one of the best ways to ensure medications are not accidentally used or intentionally misused by someone else. “As we mark the installation of 1,000 safe medication disposal kiosks in our drugstores, we are truly inspired by the response to the program from communities around the country,” said Richard Ashworth, Walgreens president of operations. “We are proud to provide a solution to get unwanted medications out of home medicine cabinets and avoid landfills while we continue to expand the

From Monday to Saturday, Mendoza joined the trio in different barangay communities to deliver special gifts and cash prizes to lucky dabarkads — under in the sun, crossing rivers, traveling to remote places just to provide “isang libo’t isang tuwa” to EB’s loyal viewers. She further recalled that being out every day and meeting new faces from different walks of life were all new to her. “To be honest, I wasn’t used to new environments but I love connecting with people. I wanted to know their stories and what they were going through,” she said. Manalo and Bayola soon noticed that Mendoza was natural comedian and has a way of reaching out to people. “You never feel that she grew up with a different background. while Mendoza is the youngest and latest addition to the show, she was able to adjust with the group very quickly. He noted how the young lady was never scared to get her hands dirty and genuinely paid attention to the residents they visited. “She’s always open to new things. She’s not afraid to try anything and you’ll really feel that she’s enjoying this job. She loves hosting and she excels in it,” said Bayola. He recalled one episode where Mendoza was moved to tears by the story of one “Sugod Bahay” winner. “There was this guy who was neglected by his family and was in the worst living conditions. She cried to us after because she couldn’t believe that someone would do that to a person. In such situations, what we do is listen to everyone’s plight and try to relay it to the audience and let them draw their own realizations from the stories.” Mendoza acknowledged how the people they meet help her re-evaluate what is important in life and also teach the value of hard work and gratitude.

Your Immigration Solution ATTY. DEVIN CONNOLLY & NANCY MILLER LOSING a beloved family member is one of the most difficult times in a person’s life. And this tragic event can become even more heartbreaking if it also means that you also lose the privilege of being granted permanent resident status in the U.S. (green card). This additional upsetting element is because the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) says that an approved visa petition is automatically revoked if the petitioner dies before the beneficiary is issued a green card. However, despite this automatic revocation, a person may still be eligible for their green card despite the petitioner’s death. First, Section 204(l) of the INA says that people may still apply for their green cards from within the U.S. in certain situations, a process called “adjustment of status.” Section 204(l) requires the foreign citizen attempting to obtain their green card to prove that they resided in the United States at the time of the petitioner’s death and that they are continuing to reside in the U.S. The ability to still be granted a green card because of your residence in the U.S. is a major benefit to many immigrants. Previously, only certain widows and widowers who were petitioned by their U.S. citizen spouse were granted the opportunity to obtain permanent resident status after the death of the petitioner. How does a person meet the “residency” standard? As stated above, the beneficiary of the visa petition must actually reside in the U.S. at the time of their family member’s death. They will not be eligible under INA 204(l) simply by being physically present in the

No pork, beef, chicken, or any other meat from animals. Many pescatarians also eat eggs and other dairy products, besides nuts, whole grains, legumes (beans, source of protein). Those two words are a neologism constructed as a portmanteau of the Italian word pesce (fish), derived from the Latin word piscis, and the English term for vegetarian. The origin of the name pescatarian dates back to 1993. Why do people turn pescatarians? There are various reasons or circumstances why individuals become pescatarians: health, financial, environmental, sociocivic animal causes, religious, etc. Inefficiency of meat sources or scarcity of meat, besides cost, is another reason. Others prefer to eat only free-range cattle, chicken, and pigs, and most in the United States and most countries are not. The amount of energy and environmental impact necessary to feed a cow, a chicken, or a pig significantly exceeds its nutritional values, so these individuals prefer to eat wild-caught fish instead of farmed carnivorous fish that need food input of other fish. Others use this no-meat diet as a
A green card is still possible despite petitioner’s death U.S. on the exact day that their relative passed away. Rather, it is required that they maintained a residence in the U.S. at the time of the petitioner’s death. However, it is not required that they were physically present in the U.S. on the date of death. Thus, an immigrant beneficiary may still be eligible for adjustment of status if they were actually abroad when the petitioner died, so long as they can establish that they were actually residing in the U.S. at the time of the petitioner’s death. It is also important to note that the law does not require that they be legally residing in the U.S. at the time of death. In addition to residing in the U.S., the beneficiary must also demonstrate that they deserve a favorable exercise of discretion and also that they have an acceptable substitute sponsor. The INA does not permit just anyone to serve as a substitute sponsor. Rather, the INA provides a list of possible family members that may serve as a substitute sponsor, such as sibling, child, etc. Section 204(l) of the INA is obviously beneficial to many people. Unfortunately, though, not everyone qualifies. For those beneficiaries who are not eligible to apply for adjustment of status under INA 204(l), they still have the opportunity to apply for “Humanitarian Reinstatement.” “Humanitarian Reinstatement” provides hope for those family members living abroad who waited patiently for their opportunity to immigrate to the U.S. A request for “Humanitarian Reinstatement” is a request that the petition be reinstated on humanitarian grounds. If the request is granted, then the beneficiary and their spouse and children will be able to continue
with the Immigrant Visa process and will be able to reunite with their remaining family members in the United States. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service will consider several different factors when making a decision on a request for “Humanitarian Reinstatement.” These factors include potential hardship to U.S. citizen or lawful permanent residents; whether there will be a disruption of an established family unit; whether the beneficiary is elderly, has strong family ties to the U.S., or is in poor health; and whether there was an undue delay in the processing of the petition. It is undeniable that the death of a loved one can devastate a family. And for some prospective immigrants the death may also make it more challenging for them to obtain a green card. But it is important to remember that immigrating to the U.S. may still be possible despite the death of your close family member. Social media produces no product. It is no more than a data collection agency that sells and repackages information you provide to them via your postings and sells them to the highest bidder, whether a political entity seeking votes and thereby power or commercial companies wanting your business. Test it by searching for any widget to buy and lo and behold, within minutes, there are pop-up ads of similar widgets driving you nuts. Talk about online stalking!!! It is disconcerting, to say the least. We fume quietly or rage and rant for the most part about the death of our privacy. But take comfort. Life is a series of action and reaction much like a pendulum. One day, when people are fed up enough to set things in motion to rein in the undue influence of these amoral tech giants, these obtrusive entities will have to be broken up to smaller bits so they cannot be a danger to society much longer. Evidence-based data show that those who regularly eat meat, especially red meat and processed meat, have increased death rate from overall causes, risk for cardiovascular, metabolic (diabetes/thyroid diseases, etc.), Alzheimer’s, and cancer. Fish provide omega-3 fatty acids, which are healthy and cancer-preventive, like vegetables, some fruits, nuts, and spices, which are anticancer foods. Red meats contain a lot of saturated fats, choline, and carnitine. Eating fish raises high-density lipoproteins (HDL), the good cholesterol. What are the supporting statistics? Among other scientific reports that confirm recent clinical findings, here is one from almost two decades ago: “1999 Metaanalysis” meta-analysis of five studies comparing vegetarian and non-vegetarian mortality rates in Western countries found that in
comparison with regular meateaters, mortality from ischemic heart disease was 34 percent lower in pescetarians, 34 percent lower in ovo-lacto vegetarians, 26 percent lower in vegans.” Can pescatarian diet help maintain good health? Yes, individuals on pescatarian diet could achieve excellent health as long as they live a healthy lifestyle. Fish, eggs and other dairies, legumes, and nuts, are enough as sources of protein for one to have good nutrition on pescatarian diet. The opposite is true among meat eaters as the data above and below show. Abstinence from red meat, especially processed meats (and processed food items in general) is healthier. Which are the healthiest fish to eat? Considering factors like chemical contamination, their food sources, levels of the bad omega 6 ratio to the good omega 3, species endangerment, the following have been cited as the best fish to consume: Wild-caught salmon, Artic char, Atlantic mackerel, black cod, sardines, milkfish (bangus), rainbow trout, anchovies, rock fish, pacific halibut, and regular, light, small tuna, like those is cans. Amazing South California road trip destinations to try this summer

I AM pretty sure everybody’s got their summer trip planned (some even saved up the whole year for an awesome vacation), and some prefer to hit the road to enjoy the view on the way. To welcome the summer season, I rounded up a few road trip destinations you should definitely check out. Orange County Known for its well-heeled residents and high prices but is a favorite summer spot, is Orange County. If you want to take a break from the busy Santa Monica pier, stroll down the string of less crowded beaches in Orange County and get some serious R&R. The beaches (and the waves) are definitely the main draw. The Pelican Hill is a great place if you are planning a family trip, but if you are thinking more of a romantic sunset by the beach, the Montage Laguna Beach is a great choice. It offers an excellent spa, impeccable grounds, and beautiful rooms with breathtaking views. Just a quick tip: if you take the Santa Ana Freeway you would likely get there faster but if you’ve got some time to spare, Cabrillo Highway is the most scenic. Along the way you’ll see gorgeous beaches and rolling hills. Encinitas Summer is here, and the waves are calling! Voted as the no. 3 surf spot town in the U.S. by Surfer Magazine, Encinitas is looking so darn good this time of the year. There’s a good spot to drop your surfboard called, Cardiff Reef. But it’s not all water sports. Bikers can cycle through the Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation while golfers can hit Encinitas Ranch, and gamblers (or horse-lovers) can spend the day at Del Mar racetrack — just a short 10-minute drive away. Santa Barbara Want to escape the fast life but don’t want to fly? Drive about two hours from LA and be transported to “Mediterranean-esque” town
with Mission-style buildings, pretty storefronts, art galleries, and quaint restaurants along the tree-lined streets. One of the most popular activities is shopping along State Street and at Paseo Nuevo, which boasts some of the best stores in the region. San Diego Balboa Park, Salk Institute, the old footbridges – these are just a few of the spots you can check out when you drive to San Diego this summer. I love that San Diego is not that far from LA and also not as different (in a good way). It’s like a more conservative version of Los Angeles. There’s a wide range of things to do and places to go — from beaches to restaurants and bars San Diego has all of them. You can watch the hang gliders over the La Jolla cliffs, check out some old ships, or eat Mexican food. You can also visit one of America’s most haunted houses. Big Bear When it’s one hundred degrees in LA, head out – rather, drive – two hours out of LA and find yourself cooling down at Big Bear. It’s known for snow, But in the summer, outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, or hang-
ing out under a pine tree with a picnic basket will make your trip up worthwhile. They say the food’s good too. Try their chicken pot pie and brown sugar glazed bacon, and wash it down at Nottingham’s Tavern afterwards. This is life! While L.A. has so much to offer when it comes to top-notch restaurants, museums, wonderful beaches and a lively nightlife scene, it’s nice to pack your bags and try a drive-to-town adventure sometimes. If you really want to be in awe of something greater than yourself, go star gazing heavenly bodies — real stars — the sort that burns out after billions of years. It promises to be quite an experience. Start small by watching meteor showers. They occur all the time but they are visible to human eyes on cloudless, moonless nights. Meteors may be the residual particles of the seemingly infinite cycle of creation and destruction as the universe continues to expand in the last 13 billion years during an event called The Big Bang, according to the best educated estimates by cosmologists. Meteors are made of dust and ice ranging in size from a grain of sand to a corn kernel, hurtling through space at great speeds and burning up quickly in a spray of colors as they enter earth’s atmosphere. Thoreau once said that humility like darkness reveals the heav-

enly lights. And it is true when you become a night sky watcher. If your circumstances permit it, and you have family and friends that are up to it, do this one thing that others have suggested we do before we kick the bucket. Schedule time to hie off to a safe place (a public park, a friend’s mountain cabin, a boat at sea or even a cemetery) far from the city lights at night with friends or family or any kindred spirit to set up camp between July 17 and August 24 to view the Perseids, the most popular and spectacular of meteor showers. This summer, it is show time. The Perseids is a celestial treat for those who take the time and wait patiently in darkness. Experts say that there is an average of 70 meteors per hour guaranteed to put up a show For 2018, the Perseids are projected to peak on the night of August 12 and the early morning hours of August 13. Mark these dates. Pray for good weather. There is a new moon and the darkness will create ideal conditions to watch these shooting stars. Check out the Griffith Park Observatory in Los Angeles, if you leave anywhere close. Their reason for being is watching the night sky. Before midnight, dress appropriately and lie down on camping blankets on the ground keeping a thermos of hot chocolate and some munchies within reach and wait eyes wide open. Bring bug spray. There will be streaks and flashes of colors against a backdrop of velvet black firmament as the Perseids, like celestial clock-
work, hit the earth’s atmosphere, as they have done so for thousands of years. Come to think of it, like meteors, we are made of dust and our life is just a brief flash on an infinite timeline. If we do this often enough, we may come to realize how great is our God who has fashioned each one of us out of ordinary dust to create a unique person capable of reflecting the beauty of the creator within a lifetime. The experience can show to us the vastness of the universe and how little we are in the great scheme of things. If social media has the power to bloat our egos, the opposite is true of this exercise. Patiently waiting for shooting stars all in God’s perfect timing, can grind our egos into dust. This can make us humble enough to ponder the heavenly lights. We can then begin to appreciate our life and the lives of those in our immediate orbit and live the rest of our lives praising God. That’s what watching meteor showers even once during our lifetime can do for us. It can give us an inkling of how great God is and how blessed we are. When we’re ready, willing and able, we may even go bolder and include the adventure of seeking the Northern Lights in the freezing cold of the Arctic zone. and other chemicals. Other fish to avoid: Swordfish, king mackerel, shark, bigeye tuna (often used in sushi), marlin, Gulf tilefish, orange roughy and swordfish. Farmed salmon, other farmed fishes and seafoods, are notoriously contaminated with pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, etc. Chilean Sea Bass, an excellent and expensive fish I relish, is among the “not to eat” list only because it is among the endangered species. Iranian Beluga fish is also on the “protection list.” The most expensive caviar and also the most expensive food on earth is Almas, the caviar from Beluga (about $34,000 per kilo or 2 pounds, 3 ounces). There are many other fishes on the endangered list. How about eating red meat occasionally? Anyone who eats red meat, even only once a week, or less, is a meat-eater and does not qualify to be called as pescatarian. The two main criteria are: diet basically including fish and vegetables and totally meatless. How about cancer risks among meat eaters? Like most cancers, like breast and colon cancers, pancreatic cancer is significantly impacted by diet, like those high in saturated fats. A pescatarian diet started
early in life and sustained faithfully would lower the risk for the development of cancers, besides cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, together with a healthy lifestyle. A diet high in processed meat (sausages, luncheon meats, etc.) may increase the risk of carnivores developing pancreatic cancer by almost 70 percent, reported a recent major study that was published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.A study showed “an average of 41 cases of pancreatic cancer were diagnosed per 100,000 people each year among those who ate the most processed meat compared with 20 cases among those who ate the least.” This research, which included 180,000 individuals, also found that individuals who ate even non-processed red meats, including pork, beef, and any other red meats, had a 50 percent higher risk of having cancer of the pancreas. While this is 20 percent lower compared to those who ate processed meats, 50 percent increase in the risk is still too high for comfort, since pancreatic cancer is a very painful and fatal disease, with no known cure. Scientists think the culprit carcinogen (cancer-causing agent) may not be the saturated fat in red meats but the nitrate-based preservatives and the cooking method, like charcoal grilling and
broiling. Apparently, the cooking method and the nitrate preservatives each play a great role as carcinogens. While the saturated fat in fresh (no preservative) red meat appears not to be linked to pancreatic cancer in this study, other studies have shown that people who eat red meat regularly have a higher risk for developing cancer of the colon, breast, and other cancers in general, compared to those who minimize eating red meat. Red meat also causes a quick rise in the cholesterol blood level, a condition that increases the risk for the development of heart attack and stroke. The pescatarian diet is becoming more and more popular today, especially among the young and educated group who are more health conscious and updated on current health data. *** Philip S. Kiko: In a lot of ways. Well, I guess it’s because of the Internet and how privacy is like lost in today’s world…how young kids prefer trolling the Net rather than living. How would you describe your parents (liberal or strict or just like a friend to you) and how would you describe yourself as a son? Donny (son of Maricel Laxa and Anthony Pangilinan): My parents are my support system. They are strict when they need to be. As a son, I know I’m not perfect. But I’m blessed to have amazing parents who are there every step of the way. Elmo (son of the late Francis Magalona and Pia Arroyo): My parents are half and half. One half was very strict, the other very liberal. I think you can already tell who is what, hahaha!!! But as their son, growing up in their household, I learned to embrace that I needed both kinds of parents to be who I am today. Jerome (son of actor Jessie Delgado): Separated po parents ko. I didn’t have that much time para maka-bonding sila kasi busy si Papa and si Mama was always out of town. But now, we are catching up. Kiko (son of Gary Estrada and Cheska Diaz): A balance of both, I guess. Well, my mom was strict but at a certain age, she just allowed me to experience life and learn from it. What’s the best advice from your parents that you always keep in mind? Donny: Stay grounded. Never forget where you came from. Give glory to God always. Elmo: Love what you do, and you will never have to work your entire life.

Direk Joey on what Walwal is all about “I am the only senior citizen on the project,” direk Joey Javier Reyes unabashedly admitted. “The writer and the actors are all millennials.” The writer, Gerald Mark Foliente, is described by Joey as the best student in his writing class in La Salle. “He’s the youngest accepted workshopper of Ricky Lee,” said Joey. “Except for my few inputs, everything in the script is from his point of view. Well, who would be a better person to write about millennials than a millennial himself?” According to Joey, Walwal is an
updated version of his 1994 film Pare Ko about that time’s youth, starring Jomari Yllana, Mark Anthony Fernandez, Gio Alvarez and Jao Mapa. “Walwal is a growing-up film,”explained Joey. “The word walwal means walang paki-alam, used by millennnials to describe their easy-go-lucky lifestyle when they go out to have fun, to have good time, when they go out drinking or dancing to forget their problems, to de-stress themselves. During my time, the word used was nagwawala (letting go).” As a professor in La Salle, Joey is surrounded by millennials so he’s not a stranger to them. “Life then was simple,” added Joey. “There was no social media, mas kampante ang mundo. Ngayon, ang gulo-gulo! That’s why the problems of today’s youth are far different from the problems of the previous generation. Before, we lived for the future. Today, the millennials live for the moment.”
