Welcome to the 11th Asian Film Awards organized by the Asian Film Awards Academy. I am pleased to report that now in its fourth year, our Academy continues to recognize excellence in Asian cinema through the annual awards show, and to nurture young film talents and develop audiences for Asian cinema around the world. In the past year our Academy has sent young film professionals on work placements in sound and visual effects in Germany; organized another successful student group visit to a major film festival and market (the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival and Awards); and presented roadshows of AFA-nominated and winning films at film festivals in Kyoto (Japan), Hawaii (US) and Chennai (India). Venerable actress Ms. Cheng Pei Pei visited Hawaii with us for a very popular masterclass, sharing insights from her acting career with film masters such as King Hu and Ang Lee.

We are most excited to be celebrating excellence in Asian cinema again in our annual awards show. This year, the AFA has moved back to Hong Kong, where it all began, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Hong Kong SAR. Our Academy and Awards will continue to maintain Hong Kong’s role as an international city and a major hub for the creative industries. We are most honored by this year’s Jury President, Mr. Jia Zhangke, the award-winning and internationally respected Chinese director. We are also delighted that Ms. Karena Lam, acclaimed actress and a leading lady of Chinese language cinema, has joined us as Celebrity Juror. We thank them and our jury of professionals, for their dedication, effort and expertise. We are also grateful to our Nominations Committee members, submission organizations and industry executives for their contribution to the Awards. I would like to extend my gratitude to our Financial Supporter Create Hong Kong and Hong Kong Film Development Fund, and our committed partners and supporters, whose contribution has been most important to the development of Asian cinema.

ia Zhangke graduated from the Beijing Film Academy and has directed eleven feature films and numerous short films since 1998. His works have garnered many awards and nominations at international film festivals, including Xiao Wu (1998), his debut feature film, which won the International Forum of New Cinema at Berlin; Still Life (2006) received the Golden Lion Award at Venice; A Touch of Sin (2013) won the award for Best Screenplay at Cannes; Mountains May Depart (2015) was nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes and won Best Original Screenplay at the Taiwan Golden Horse Awards. In 2015, he was awarded with Carrosse d’Or at the 68th Cannes Film Festival. He has been jury member for the main competitions for Cannes, Venice and San Sebastian Film Festivals. Currently he is Vice President of China Film Directors’ Guild, and the Director of the Shanghai Vancouver Film School. He has also launched “JiaScreen”, a video platform which introduces short films from around the world to China. Jia has won Best Director for Still Life and Best Screenwriter for Mountains May Depart at the 1st and 10th Asian Film Awards respectively.

樟柯畢業於北京電影學院，自1998年以來共執導 11部電影長片及大量短片，於多個國際電影節上獲 獎及提名無數，當中包括處女作《小武》（1998） 獲柏林電影節青年論壇大獎；《三峽好人》（2006）獲威尼 斯電影節最佳影片金獅獎；《天注定》（2013）獲康城電影 節最佳編劇獎；《山河故人》（2015）獲康城金棕櫚獎提名 及金馬獎最佳原著劇本等。2015年他獲頒第68屆康城影展 導演雙週單元金馬車獎（終身成就獎）。他曾為康城、威尼 斯、聖塞巴斯蒂安國際電影節擔任主競賽單元評委，現為中 國電影導演協會副會長及上海溫哥華電影學院院長。2016 年，他創辦「柯首映」，為全球短片創作者於中國內地提供 作品播映平台。賈樟柯曾憑《三峽好人》獲得首屆亞洲電影 大獎最佳導演獎，及《山河故人》獲得第10屆最佳編劇獎。

arena Lam Ka-yan is an acclaimed actress and is considered one of the most versatile artists in Hong Kong. With her feature debut in July Rhapsody (2002), she won Best Supporting Actress and Best New Performer awards at the Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA) and the Taipei Golden Horse Awards. She has then taken on leading roles in films such as Inner Senses (2002), The Floating Landscape (2003), Koma (2004), Home Sweet Home (2005), Claustrophobia (2008) and Heaven in the Dark (2015), earning her six nominations for the HKFA for Best Actress. In 2015, she was named Best Leading Actress by the Golden Horse Awards for her role in Zinnia Flower, making her the first artist ever to have won all of the three acting awards at the Golden Horse. She has been jury member for the Hong Kong International Film Festival, ifva (Incubator for Film & Visual Media in Asia) Awards, Shanghai International Film Festival, Taipei Film Festival and Tokyo International Film Festival.

嘉欣是著名香港女演員，2002年演出首部作品 《男人四十》即獲得香港電影金像獎及台北金馬獎 的最佳新演員獎及最佳女配角獎。其後主演電影 《 異 度 空 間 》（ 2 0 0 2 ) 、《 戀 之 風 景 》（ 2 0 0 3 ）、《 救 命 》 （2004）、《怪物》（2005）、《親密》（2008）及《暗 色天堂》（2015），六度獲提名香港電影金像獎最佳女主 角。2015年，她憑《百日告別》榮獲金馬獎最佳女主角，成 為金馬獎史上首位囊括三項演技獎的大滿貫女演員。她曾為 香港國際電影節、ifva獨立短片及影像媒體比賽、上海國際 電影節、台北電影節及東京電影節擔任評審。

ANDO Kohei / Japan
Programming Advisor, Tokyo International Film Festival Ando Kohei is a filmmaker and Professor Emeritus of Waseda University. His works have been awarded by international film festivals in France, Hawaii, Tokyo and others. They are also collected by museums around the world.

Programmer, Busan Cinema Center Huh Moon-yung is a film critic and read anthropology at the Seoul National University. He was Editor-in-Chief of film magazine CINE21 and Progammer of Busan International Film Festival.

Programming Director, Tokyo International Film Festival Ishizaka Kenji is a film critic. He was Film Coordinator at the Japan Foundation and serves as Professor at the Japan Institute of the Moving Image (a.k.a. Imamura Shohei Film School).

Jennifer JAO / Taiwan
Director, Taipei Film Commission Jennifer Jao is responsible for allocating public resources to support Taiwan and international productions at the Taipei Film Commission. In its tenth year, the TFC has assisted in the production of nearly 4,000 films. It supported the production of Life of Pi (dir. Ang Lee, 2012), Lucy (dir. Luc Besson, 2014) and Silence (dir. Martin Scorsese, 2016), which were all shot in Taipei.
饒紫娟 ／台灣 台北市電影委員會總監 饒紫娟現於台北市電影委員會負責台灣的本地及海外製作。影委會成立十年至今，共協 助過攝製近四千齣影片。曾獲影委會支持於台北拍攝的電影包括《少年PI的奇幻漂流》 （導演：李安，2012）、《LUCY：超能煞姬》（導演：洛比桑，2014）及《沉默》 （導演：馬田史高西斯，2016）。

Program Director, Busan International Film Festival Kim Ji-seok has made substantial contribution to the introduction of new Asian film talents. He is in charge of the Busan International Film Festival’s A Window on Asian Cinema and New Currents programs, in which internationally acclaimed and emerging Asian filmmakers are presented.

LI Cheuk-to / Hong Kong
Artistic Director, Hong Kong International Film Festival Society Li Cheuk-to has served on juries at Berlin, Rotterdam, Busan and others. He is a founding member of the Hong Kong Film Critics Society and was President from 1995 to 1999. He was Editor-in-Chief of Film Biweekly and has also written for major film journals such as Sight and Sound, Film Comment and Cinemaya.

Kamil OTHMAN / Malaysia
Advisor on Creative Industries Strategy and Policy, Government of Malaysia Kamil Othman was Vice President of the Asian Film Commissioners Network (AFCNet), and Director General of the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia until his retirement in November, 2016. He has written numerous articles on film and contributed to the New Straits Times and the Star Newspapers as a film critic.
卡米爾奧曼 ／馬來西亞 馬來西亞聯邦政府創意工業策略及政策顧問 卡米爾奧曼為前亞洲電影委員會聯盟副主席，並為前馬來西亞國立電影發展委員會之 總幹事，於2016年11月退休。卡米爾的電影文章曾被多次出版，亦曾任《New Straits Times》及《Star Newspapers》之影評。

Michael USLAN / US
Producer Michael Uslan is the award-winning Originator and Executive Producer of the Batman movie franchise. Other brands he has been involved in include The Lego Movie (2014), Constantine (2005), National Treasure (2004) and Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego? (1994 - 1999). His memoir, The Boy Who Loved Batman (2011), is published by Chronicle Books.

Adam WONG Sau-ping / Hong Kong
Director Adam Wong Sau-ping has made multiple films including popular features The Way We Dance (2013) and She Remembers, He Forgets (2015), and short films The Secret Taste (2012) and Assignment (2016). He is now conceiving a sequel to The Way We Dance. He also teaches film at the Polytechnic University of Hong Kong and Baptist University of Hong Kong.

亞洲電影大獎 簡介
Inaugurated in 2007, the Asian Film Awards celebrates excellence in Asian cinema through the annual presentation of awards to talents and films that make up the dynamic film industries of Asia. Awards night is a spectacular gathering of stars, celebrities, industry professionals and the media that highlights and publicizes the year’s achievements in Asian movies. Presented in Hong Kong in its first seven years, the Awards moved to one of Asia’s fastest growing entertainment hubs, Macau, in 2014 – one step closer to its long-term plan of being held in different Asian cities to reflect its broad reach across the entire region. In 2017, the AFA has moved back to Hong Kong, where it all began, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Hong Kong SAR. Our Academy and Awards will continue to maintain Hong Kong’s role as an international city and a major hub for the creative industries. 一年一度的亞洲電影大獎於2007年創辦，旨在表揚傑出的亞洲電影作品和人才，並展示亞 洲電影界的多元文化和活力。頒獎典禮當晚，區內電影界台前幕後的精英聚首一堂，共同嘉 獎該年度成績卓越的電影作品和電影工作者，吸引世界各地媒體出席及報導當晚盛況。 亞洲電影大獎在香港舉行了首七屆頒獎典禮，2014年移師至亞洲娛樂樞紐澳門，並計劃在 未來繼續巡迴到亞洲不同地區舉行，彰顯大獎在區內的廣泛代表性。於2017年香港回歸二 十年之際，今年亞洲電影大獎將移師回香港，在這個亞洲區創意產業最為活躍的城市之一舉 行第十一屆周年誌慶。

ASIAN FILM AWARDS ACADEMY 亞洲電影大獎學院簡介
In 2013, three main Asian film festivals - Busan, Hong Kong and Tokyo - joined together to create the non-profit organization, the Asian Film Awards Academy to promote and develop Asian cinema and its talents. The AFA Academy highlights, strengthens and develops Asian film industry and culture through the annual Asian Film Awards, and several year-round initiatives including strategies for building regional and international audiences. Members of the AFA Academy are drawn from all past nominees and winners of the Asian Film Awards. Members vote for the Asian Film Awards and also participate in various AFA Academy activities involving film professionals and audiences in Asia and around the world. Since 2015, the AFA Academy has been presenting events and activities including the Masterclass Series, Journey to the Fest – Student Visits to Film Festivals, Asian Cinerama – Film Roadshows and Young Film Professionals Program. With dedicated efforts of the AFA Academy’s film festival and cultural partners, it has been fulfilling its mission to promote, educate, inform and develop knowledge, skills and interest in Asian cinema among the industry, students and audiences in Asia and beyond. Our past partners include the Edinburgh (UK), Pacific Meridian (Russia), Quezon City (Philippines), Cambodia, Kyoto HISTORICA (Japan), Hawaii (US) and Chennai (India) International Film Festivals, BAFTA (UK), Medienboard BerlinBrandenburg (Germany), Nipkow Programm (Germany) and Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival (Taiwan). The AFA Academy expresses the increasing global importance and creative strengths of Asian films and aims to unite the industries and talents of the fast-growing region.

heng Jen-Shuo made his acting debut in TV drama Red Woman is Flower (2001) alongside actress Chen Chiao-en. He then took several years away from acting to take care of his sick father. In recent years, he restarted his career by working backstage as a production manager, but never gave up his passion in acting. In 2015, he won Best Actor at the 17th Taipei Film Festival, and was nominated for Best Actor at the 52th Taipei Golden Horse Awards for his role in Thanatos, Drunk (2015). In 2016, he was nominated for Best Actor for the TV movie The Island of River Flow (2016), as well as for Best Supporting Actor for TV series La Grande Chaumière Violette (2016). As the Student Ambassador of the Asian Film Awards Academy this year, Cheng will devote himself to encouraging and nurturing the next generation of the film industry.

人碩於2001年與陳喬恩拍攝電視劇《紅色女人花》 出道，後因照顧中風父親而離開演藝圈多年。近年 再從電影幕後工作人員做起，並堅持他的演員夢 想。2015年以電影《醉‧生夢死》（2015）獲得第17屆台 北電影獎最佳男配角，並入圍第52屆台北金馬獎最佳男配 角。2016年則分別以電視電影《川流之島》（2016）、連 續劇《紫色大稻埕》（2016）入圍第51屆電視金鐘獎最佳男 主角、最佳男配角。他將擔任本年度亞洲電影大獎學院的學 生大使，透過交流來鼓勵與培育有志加入電影業的年輕人。

Tsui Hark is recognized as a heavyweight of Chinese cinema with prestigious awards from the Hong Kong Film Awards, the Taipei Golden Horse Awards, and the Venice Film Festival. Approaching the 40th year of his prolific career, Tsui has directed 32 films, co-directed five films and produced 61 films with many iconic talents, including King Hu, Yuen Wo-ping, John Woo, Johnnie To, Ringo Lam, Jet Li, Maggie Cheung, Stephen Chow and Brigitte Lin amongst others. The call of cinema Born in Vietnam in 1950, Tsui moved to Hong Kong with his family at the age of 13. Drawn to film in his early teens, Tsui later pursued his studies in filmmaking and worked in film, TV, theatre and journalism in the US until his return to Hong Kong in 1977. From then on, he worked as a director-producer in Television Broadcasts Limited, then went on to direct the costume drama Gold Dagger Romance (1978) for Commercial Television, catching the attention of film producer Ng See-yuen, who produced Tsui’s debut film The Butterfly Murders (1979). He followed this with the horror comedy We’re Going to Eat You (1980) and the politically daring Dangerous Encounters of the First Kind (1980). These first three feature films, all completed in two years, announced a filmmaker of bold ambition, curiosity and inventiveness and established Tsui as one of the driving forces of the Hong Kong New Wave.

徐克在1950年出生於越南，13歲時與家人移居香港，後遠赴美國攻讀電影，畢業後留美從事 電影、電視、戲劇和傳媒工作。他在1977年回港後，加入電視廣播有限公司，擔任編導等工 作。一年後轉投佳藝電視，編導經典武俠劇《金刀情俠》（1978），並獲得電影監製吳思遠 賞識，於1979年完成首齣古裝劇情長片《蝶變》（1979）。該片的美術和武打形式與傳統 中國武俠片截然不同，在影壇大受矚目。敢作敢為的徐克其後執導喜劇恐怖片《地獄無門》 （1980）及挑戰電檢尺度的《第一類型危險》（1980），打破當年香港電影類型的固有框 框，為80年代香港電影新浪潮的其中一位先鋒。

In 1984, Tsui and Nansun Shi founded Film Workshop, through which he directed and produced a series of highly successful commercial films that helped shape the “golden era” of Hong Kong cinema. Some of Film Workshop’s well-known classics include Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain (dir. Tsui Hark, 1983), A Better Tomorrow (dir. John Woo, 1986), the A Chinese Ghost Story series (dir. Tony Ching, 1987-1991), The Killer (dir. John Woo, 1989), the Swordsman series (dir. King Hu, 1990; dir. Tony Ching, 1992; dir. Tony Ching and Raymond Lee, 1993), the Once Upon a Time in China series (dir. Tsui Hark, 1991 – 94; dir. Yuen Bun, 1993; dir. Sammo Hung, 1997), Iron Monkey (dir. Yuen Wo-ping, 1993) and Time and Tide (dir. Tsui Hark, 2000). In the 1990s, Tsui directed Double Team (1997) and Knock Off (1998) starring Jean-Claude Van Damme in Hollywood. Tsui’s Once Upon a Time in China series re-vamped the classic Wong Fei-hong legend, energizing and reinventing the spectacle of martial arts movies. The films were popular with both local and international audiences, and secured Tsui’s status as a cosmopolitan and versatile filmmaker and helped bring Hong Kong cinema to international prominence.
A pioneer into the unknown

In 2005, Tsui’s Seven Swords (2005) opened the Venice Film Festival. In 2006, he co-directed the much anticipated anthology Triangle (2007) with fellow directors, Ringo Lam and Johnnie To, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2009, his mastery of combining period action and special effects were stunningly displayed in Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (2010) which won awards at various Chinese film festivals, and competed at the Venice Film Festival. While Tsui enjoyed critical acclaim, he also earned tremendous box office success.
Pushing the boundaries of martial arts worlds Ever since his early career, Tsui has been interested in applying new technologies to the traditional martial arts film. He broke new ground in 1983 with Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain using technologies developed from Star Wars; and in 1997, Tsui produced the first 3D Chinese animation A Chinese Ghost Story: The Tsui Hark Animation (dir. Andrew Chen). With a unique combination of aesthetic vision and understanding of the potential of technologies, Tsui has created filmic worlds that are both larger than life and believable, opening new horizons of imagination for the audience. Tsui was the first director in China to employ IMAX 3D cameras in Flying Swords of Dragon Gate (2011). Thereafter, all his films have been shot in 3D, including Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon (2013) and The Taking of Tiger Mountain (2014). His 3D films have been both well received by critics and earned great box office success: Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon won Maverick Award at the Rome International Film Festival; The Taking of Tiger Mountain grossed over RMB880 million (USD140 million) in the China market alone, winning Tsui Best Director at China’s Golden Rooster Awards, Huabiao Film Awards and the Hong Kong Film Awards.

Endless horizons To continue reworking and expanding the martial arts genre, Tsui has produced Sword Master (2016) directed by Derek Yee and The Thousand Faces of Dunjia (2017) directed by Yuen Wo-ping. His latest directorial work Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back (2017) marks his first collaboration with another Hong Kong film icon, Stephen Chow: the film bears the indubitable stamp of each of their artistic personality and opened on Lunar New Year to excited audiences in Greater China with box office success. With ingenuity and determination, Tsui has straddled the fine line between tradition and modernity as well as worlds of the known and unknown. As a popular director and an auteur, he has achieved both artistic and technical breakthroughs that have advanced the language of cinema. His imagination has been boundless and yet grounded in its connection with his audience, no matter where they may be. Director-producer Derek Yee once remarked that Tsui was truly a director who devoted his whole being to film. And since his boyhood, Tsui Hark is still living this proof.

Sammi Cheng embarked on her journey in entertainment when she was placed third at the Artists New Talent Singing Contest organized by Television Broadcasts Limited in Hong Kong in 1988. In the 1990s, she rose to become a superstar of the global Chinese pop scene, and has sold over 25 million music records worldwide and has performed more than 250 solo concerts around the world. In 1992, Cheng made her screen debut in Best of the Best (dir. Herman Yau), for which she was nominated Best Newcomer at the Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA). To date, she has acted in almost 30 films with renowned directors including Johnnie To, Wai Ka-fai, Stanley Kwan, Andrew Lau, Alan Mak and Felix Chong amongst others. She also set a new record at the HKFA in 2002 when she was nominated for Best Actress in three films - Fighting for Love (dir. Joe Ma, 2001), Love on a Diet (Johnnie To and Wai Ka-fai, 2001) and Wu Yen (Johnnie To and Wai Ka-fai, 2001). Cheng has subsequently been nominated for the HKFA and the Taipei Golden Horse Awards several times and won Best Actress for Wu Yen at the Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards. In 2006, Everlasting Regret (dir. Stanley Kwan, 2005), starring Cheng as the lead, competed at the Venice Film Festival. Her leading role in Blind Detective (dir. Johnnie To, 2013) was nominated for acting awards at the Golden Horse, HKFA, China’s Huading Awards and other competitions.

Apart from singing and acting, Cheng also published her first collection of writings in 2010, which topped Hong Kong’s list of best sellers and has been republished in 21 editions within a year. Cheng just completed her music world tour Touch Mi in 2016 and is currently featured in her latest film Love Contractually (dir. Liu Guonan, 2017).
