Welcome to the K Club magazine, where we aim to showcase our wonderful facilities and the beautiful county that we’re lucky to call home. In 2025, we had our busiest ever year, with guests from all over the world enjoying our unique brand of hospitality and service. For us, the year was marked by several highlights, one of which was Rory McIlroy’s historic win at the Irish Open. In a tense play-off on the Palmer North course, Rory won his second Irish Open title at The K Club and we were honoured to celebrate his victory with him. In 2025, we also held Europe’s biggest Pro Am – one of the most prestigious events in European golf. It continues to be one of our most successful events and one that’s going from strength to strength. At The K Club it’s always time to play and we’re proud to continue that tradition in August 2026 when we will host the Women’s Irish Open for the first time. Ongoing renovation throughout the year has helped ensure the highest quality offering to our guests. Our bedrooms and spa have been refreshed, while guests can now enjoy a match on our new padel courts. In 2025, a brand new experience was also launched at The Palmer South Driving Range – 20 state-of-the-

Renovation at The K Club never stops; in 2026, we will launch our highly anticipated new restaurant, Barton Grill, with Executive Chef Gary O’Hanlon at the helm. In collaboration with Adam Leahy, Head Chef of the new restaurant, the pair have created a new concept that combines the refinement of fine dining with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. The star of the show is local produce and dishes that draw inspiration from traditional French cuisine with a modern Irish touch. stay at The K Club invites guests to become a part of the rich and impressive history of the Straffan estate. Its lineage stretches all the way back to the time of Strongbow and in the centuries since, the land has played host to some of Ireland’s, and the world’s, most important figures. The land at Straffan was first cultivated in the sixth century and granted to Maurice Fitzgerald all the way back in 1215 when he was rewarded with it for his role in the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland. It passed through the Fitzgerald family line until the 13th century when in 1289 it came into the ownership of the de Penkinstons, who continued to grow their estates until the 15th century. Following their implication in the Baltinglass rebellion, the de Penkinstons were forced to forfeit the lands and in the centuries that followed, they passed through the hands of some notable Irish families including the Duke of Tyrconnell. In 1831 Hugh Barton of the renowned wine firm Barton and Guestier purchased the lands at Straffan from the Henry family and in 1832

Straffan House, now the east wing of the resort, was built. Due to the family’s close relationship with France, it was built in a French-Italianate style and is said to have been inspired by a château at Louveciennes, located just outside Paris.

The house was extended in 1850, with the Italianate campanile tower added, and further remodelling and restoration took place in 1937. It’s a testament to the magniﬁcence of the house that it stayed in the Barton family until 1949 when it was sold to John Ellis, a motorcycle

Built in 1832 by the Barton family, Straﬀan House boasts some of the ﬁnest French-Italianate inspired architecture of the era. The house now forms the East Wing of the hotel and resort.

The estate is purchased by the Jefferson Smurﬁt group and following extensive renovation and investment, including the establishment of two Arnold Palmer designed golf courses, the estate opens as The Kildare Hotel and Golf Club, now better known as The K Club.

Captain Frederick Bertram ‘Derick’ Barton sold Straffan House to motorcycle manufacturer and enthusiast John Ellis. The estate sold for £15,000 at the time and Ellis kept the largest privately-owned collection of classic and vintage cars in Ireland on the estate.

1949 The estate passed through the hands of a number of prominent families, but by the 16th century was in the possession of the de Penkistons. However, they were forced to forfeit the lands after their part in a rebellion.

Then known as Trachstraphli, the Straffan estate was part of a parcel of land given by Strongbow to Maurice Fitzgerald for his role in the Anglo-Norman invasion. Fitzgerald passed it to his younger brother Gerald, an ancestor of the Duke of Leinster.

On May 25, Hugh Barton died aged 89 and Straffan House passed to his second son Nathanial who inherited the estate and the wine business. Subsequently, the estate passed to Bertram Francis Barton and then on to Bertram Hugh Barton.

Screenwriter, producer, director and adventurer Kevin McClory became the owner of Straffan House. In the ﬁlm world, McClory is probably most known for producing the James Bond ﬁlm Thunderball.

Cork-born Thomas Barton founded the Barton wine ﬁrm and later settled in Bordeaux. In 1785, under the stewardship of his grandson Hugh, this becomes the world-renowned Barton & Guestier. The ﬁrm becomes synonymous for the superior quality of its wines.

Having ﬂed France during the French Revolution, Hugh purchased land in Straffan from John Joseph Henry and proceeded to build the iconic Straffan House in 1832, inspired by a magniﬁcent château based at Louveciennes outside Paris.

Work begins on a new 70-bedroom wing to the west side of the hotel and more than €20 million is spent on further renovation. Prince Albert of Monaco turned the sod to begin work on March 1.

The K Club is the venue for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, which was hosted by Grand Slam winner Rory McIlroy who went on to win the competition.

Perhaps the best known owner during this period was ebullient producer and adventurer Kevin McClory whose Hollywood connections saw the estate visited by the likes of Sir Sean Connery, Shirley MacLaine and John Huston. In 1988, the house began its transition into The K Club when it was purchased by the Jefferson Smurfit group who gave it new life as the luxury resort it is today. It was sensitively renovated and extended and two Arnold Palmer designed

golf courses were added to the estate. Initially known as The Kildare Hotel and Golf Club, it opened in 1991 and from the beginning of life as a luxury resort, began to make history. It attracted guests from around the world, drawn by its pedigree and reputation and in 1996, it became the first location in Ireland to host the Ryder Cup. In 2020, it came into the ownership of Michael Fetherston who has embarked on a bold multi-year programme of renovation, adding yet another chapter to the history of this iconic estate. While the story of The K Club continues to be written, it is beyond doubt that its future will be just as exciting, elegant and iconic as its past.

Did you know? Straffan House’s eminent architect was Frederick Darley of Dublin, a renowned name of the day. Born in 1798, he came from a long line of builders and stonecutters, with the Darley family well known in the trade. Frederick’s father (also Frederick) attended school at Mabbott Street, Dublin where one of his fellow pupils was none other than the illustrious United Irishman, Theobold Wolfe Tone. Darley’s great grandfather, Henry, owned a quarry in Newtownards, which we might muse is perhaps the impetus for the family’s profession. Darley was also notably connected to the Guinness family as his mother, Elizabeth, was the eldest daughter of the inimitable Arthur Guinness. With offices on Fitzwilliam Street in Dublin, Darley’s designs were numerous and varied. He worked as the Ecclesiastical Commissioners’ architect for the Archdiocese of Dublin, was architect to Trinity College, Dublin and to the Royal Dublin Society, and architect to the board of National Education, among other commissions. He was also a founding member of the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland. While some met the fate of the wrecking ball, many of Darley’s works still stand today and include Trinity College’s imposing New Square, the King’s Inns Library, Dublin and the instantly recognisable Merchant’s Hall in Temple Bar, Dublin. He died in 1872, leaving behind a legacy of civic and church buildings, among these Straffan House, which surely stands tall as one of his most beautiful designs.

“W

e’re still on the journey,” says Michael Fetherston, owner of The K Club. He’s talking about the extensive renovations that have taken place at the resort since he became its owner back in 2020. Following the purchase of The K Club, Michael had some bold, forward-facing ideas about the direction he wanted to take the resort. While maintaining its ambiance, luxury and prestige, he also wanted to modernise and embrace a new trend in hospitality for quiet, relaxed and more informal luxury. A man of action, he worked quickly, setting the wheels in motion to implement these changes. “My vision of what I want The K Club to be is something bigger than the sum of its renovations and investments. It’s about renovating the outlook of the resort, its ambiance and timbre. It’s the idea that the environment and atmosphere have had a renovation as well.” In the past five years Michael has overseen an expansive roster of physical renovations, with the common aim of further enhancing and refreshing the jewel that is The K Club. “Renovations and investment have impacted across all aspects of the resort,” says Michael. “What I mean by that is the hotel, the golf courses, the clubhouses, food and beverage, the restaurants, the people,” he continues. Embarking on the first large scale renovations since 2016 has been an impressive undertaking, but it’s one that Michael says has paid dividends for the patrons of the resort. He says, “the vibe has definitely changed and it’s a far more fun, relaxed and comfortable vibe that we’re embracing. Guests frequently comment on the positive changes they have seen in the Club in the last five years.” He continues, “The renovations are an evolution of the property and it’s an evolution of luxury resorts globally. To an extent, it’s following that trend of where luxury hotels have gone over the last 20 years.” He concludes, “As I say, this exciting journey is still ongoing, but it’s one that I am delighted to be able to lead The K Club through.”

The K Club: Investing in People

AND SO, TO BED…

The bedrooms at The K Club have always been known for their comfort and luxury so when it came to renovations, these qualities helped to guide the project forward. Key to the redesign was the guest; all decisions on changes were made with their comfort in mind. A large number of the resort’s rooms have been reimagined in line with their exciting new ethos. However, they remain mindful of the resort’s illustrious history and the fabric of the older parts of the building. It’s a melding of old and new, much like the resort itself. “It’s a complete redo of most of the bedrooms,” says Michael, describing the process. “The ones that we’ve done so far are all the oldest bedrooms in the property, so a lot of them would not have been refurbished for a long time,” he adds. “They are complete refurbishment projects in their own right and look dramatically different from what was previously there,” he says. All furnishings in the rooms have been specially selected by Michael and the team. “We have replaced everything in the room, from carpets and drapes to beds, headboards and furniture,” he says. The result is something that nods to the past but has been brought right up-to-date for the expectations of the modern guest. The rooms are a haven of peace and tranquillity and promise a night’s sleep that leaves you feeling refreshed, renewed and ready for the day ahead. “They’re lovely and they still retain that kind of country house feel, which is very much what The K Club hotel is,” says Michael, “but they just have more relaxed, modern and muted tones.”

While bricks and mortar have undoubtedly been a vital part of the Club’s renovation, Michael says investment in staff is something that he’s incredibly proud of during this time. “We’ve made huge investments in our people and in our training,” he says. “We have also increased the number of employees across the business; this is something which has grown hugely.” He says that staff are an integral part of what makes guests’ experiences at The K Club so special and that he has made it a long-term commitment to ensuring they have the tools and training available to help them reach their full potential. “Individuality from a staff perspective is something I am very aware of,” says Michael. “I want guests to feel that sense of comfortable Irish hospitality, that sense of warmth from all of our staff. I certainly feel that we have succeeded in doing this and it is something we will continue to invest in.”

The Personal Touch Reimagining The K Club is a huge undertaking, but one that Michael says he has been hands-on in overseeing, ensuring that only the highest standards of luxury are consistently met throughout the resort. “I feel so passionate about these renovations and our investment in people that I have personally taken the lead in this project,” says Michael. “Design and functionality are incredibly important to me in this vision, so the personal touch when it comes to leading the project has been a vital part of its success.”

couple of years and we’re delighted with how this has been received by both new and returning guests,” he says. The hotel has long been famed for its beautiful and stunning entrance hall and it was this first impression that Michael says he knew needed some attention. “One of the first projects we embarked upon five years ago was in the lobby,” says Michael. “We immediately wanted to make some changes in this area, but to keep it very much in tune with what had come before. Sensitivity to the building’s heritage was to the forefront of our minds.” In terms of material changes to the appearance of this area, Michael says guests are often struck by how much more open this part of the resort feels, with an airiness and lightness now felt in the common areas such as the lobby. “These areas were opened up, that’s probably the easiest way I could describe the work that’s been done to them. They’re much brighter and fresher and a lot more lightfilled than they previously were,” says Michael. “On

THE FUTURE OF LEISURE

Given its strong links to sport, when it came to enhancing the resort much thought was given to bringing guests the most innovative and au courant leisure offerings. Launched in late 2020, K Golf World is the resort’s groundbreaking indoor golf simulator. Using cutting edge technology, guests can virtually experience some of the finest courses in the world, all from the comfort of The K Club. With eight dedicated bays that guarantee tee time, whatever the weather, players can practice their putt or even enjoy a virtual driving range. State-of-the-art cameras track movement of both the ball and your technique, offering invaluable insight in how to improve your game. All of this comes complete with a dedicated bar and restaurant, mere steps away. More recently the resort unveiled South Padel, two brand new Padel courts which are covered and flood lit, ready for guests in all weather. Padel, an innovative new sporting sensation, shares a DNA with tennis, but delivers a faster more exciting game played across a smaller area. New to Padel? Don’t worry, The K Club has everything you need to play, with racquets and balls available for guests. You can even avail of classes and bespoke coaching sessions to help bring you up to speed on its rules and improve your game. The addition of South Trackman, bringing world class technology to The Palmer South Driving Range, further enhances the hotel’s leisure offering. A total of 20 state-of-the-art Trackman bays have opened, a cutting-edge addition that’s already elevating practice and play for both members and visiting golfers. For the first time, The KPMG Women’s Irish Open will be hosted at The K Club in August 2026. It’s set to be a year of firsts. “We pride ourselves on the sporting pursuits offered here at The K Club,” says Michael. “Both K Golf World and South Padel reflect the needs of modern guests and offer all-weather experiences that allow them to stay active while they relax.”

DINING REIMAGINED

Great dining is the beating heart of any luxury resort and Michael says that this was very much the thought process behind the reimagining of The Palmer Restaurant and South Bar and Restaurant. Changes made were rather radical. “Both were completely gutted and redesigned from the ground up,” he says. South was revamped in 2022, bringing in a new, fresh appearance designed by Jill L’Estrange. Using natural wood with accents of green, burnt orange and cream, the space feels utterly contemporary and effortlessly chic.

A NEW LEGACY

Straffan House has a long and illustrious history and it’s one that the resort is keen to preserve and to celebrate. When it came to renovations of the heritage sections of the resort, special attention was given to these historically important areas. “We wanted any changes to feel very much like a continuation of the Club’s heritage and that of Straffan House,” says Michael. “In the original part of the house, which is the lobby and the original house area, most of the rooms have been refreshed over the last

Relaxation at its Finest Wellness of both body and mind is something that The K Club takes very seriously indeed, says Michael, and it’s something that the resort will continue to grow as part of its renovations and investment programme. “We want all guests to find their own oasis of calm here at The K Club,” he says. Recent additions to their wellness offerings include an expanded roster of activities available to all guests, featuring everything from yoga to CrossFit. In addition, the resort’s new cold plunge pools offer guests the opportunity to aid recovery and boost immune health. Finally, new saunas are scheduled for opening soon, allowing guests to indulge in a little Scandinavian-style hygge, along with a new Salt Room at the K Spa – adding to the overall wellness offering.

chic. Overlooking Palmer South, a statement bar, custombuilt panelling, floor to ceiling windows and bespoke lighting, all add a little Je ne sais quoi. The Palmer Restaurant has seen some major changes take place too, including a brand-new kitchen, which allows the kitchen staff even more scope to create exciting and delicious dishes. The terrace was also substantially remodelled and now boasts a retractable roof which allows patrons to enjoy the panorama of the golf course, no matter the weather. “The windows around it can drop with the touch of a button and you’ve got indoor fire pits now too,” says Michael. “We wanted to create that feeling of bringing the outdoors indoors with the new terrace and I really feel that we have done that, and done it in style.” The Palmer Restaurant’s interior now boasts a teal and azure palette, accented with 1930s-inspired motifs. The indoor dining room feels bright and airy, melding classic luxury with something distinctly modern. It wasn’t just the physical environment that has undergone a makeover though – the vibe has changed too. “We still offer that beautiful service, but now you would feel comfortable there in a pair of jeans, as well as a shirt and jacket. It has that busy, contemporary restaurant feel, while maintaining its standard for excellence.” Good things take time and are worth waiting for. That’s certainly been the ethos at The K Club when it comes to investment in its prestigious and world-renowned golf courses. One of the first projects embarked upon as part of these renovations was to refresh Palmer North,

ensuring its excellence for decades to come. These renovations began in 2022 and weren’t for the faint hearted, utilising an innovative and cutting- edge approach to the project. Research into the best techniques to use looked at myriad factors and even took the turf of Premiership pitches as inspiration. Beginning in March of that year, four contractors were engaged for a period of five days to strip down the turf to the soil. Tonnes of sand were then laid down to help improve drainage and ultimately playability of the course. When it came to selecting grasses for the course, they were modelled on the Augusta ryegrass, chosen for its playability and durability, tailored to the climate and qualities that make this course so unique. Rather than install turf, the fairways were instead seeded and allowed to grow naturally and in their own time, guaranteeing the highest quality of playing surface. “It was the first time this was done in Ireland,” says Michael. “When we embarked on this project, we wanted to ensure excellence at every step and the way to do this was by taking our time.” This care and attention didn’t end with the cultivation of the playing surface. Instead, it just marked the beginning. Constant monitoring of the new surface and cutting of the grass by the dedicated greenkeeping team further fine-tuned the surface, a process that continues to be done. The result? Something truly exceptional. “We couldn’t have completed this without the amazing work of our greenkeeping staff,” says Michael. “As one of the first projects in this renovation, we knew this would truly elevate the course and fulfil its potential as one of the very best in the world.”

That ethos extends to our golf offering and our trailblazing events where legends of the sport compete against each other on our two courses. “Prestigious events like the Ryder Cup and The Irish Open are hugely important to the Resort. When people think of golf, they think of The K Club – people still come up to me to talk about Rory McElroy’s win at the Ryder Cup here in 2016 and his shots on the 16th and the 18th tee. His win is legendary and The K Club is part of that history,” says Michael Maxwell, Director of Golf at The K Club. When it comes to golf, The K Club doesn’t rest on its laurels. “We’re consistently looking to improve and elevate the experience for our players. We aim to be the ﬁrst to try new things, to provide new facilities and adapt to current trends.” Upping their game is, says Michael, the name of the game and for the Irish Open in September 2025, small tweaks and changes were made to the course to ensure optimum playing levels. “We allowed for some exciting pin positions so that players could once again create exciting memories for them and for us.”

RYDER CUP

In 2006, The K Club became the ﬁrst and, to this date, only Irish venue to host the prestigious Ryder Cup. The eyes of the world were drawn to Straffan in Co Kildare to watch as Team Europe walked away with top honours by a score of 18½ to 9½,

equalling their record winning margin of two years earlier – the first time Europe had achieved three successive victories. By this stage, The K Club was already a wellknown golfing destination, having hosted 13 European Opens from 1991 to 2007. In 2006, the Resort cemented its standing as one of the world’s top golf resorts as the cream of the golfing world took to the Palmer North Course to participate in one of golf’s biggest competitions.

DUBAI DUTY FREE IRISH OPEN

Ten years after the Ryder Cup, The K Club once again hosted the sport’s ﬁnest players by becoming the ofﬁcial host venue to the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open. Rory McIlroy, a four-time Major Champion by this stage, hosted the tournament which boasts a prize fund of €4 million. Once again, The K Club showcased the best in golf, luxury, Irish warmth and hospitality at what proved a momentous occasion.

In 2023, 2025 and 2027, The Irish Open has made The K Club its home. HERITAGE AND HISTORY

As one of the most renowned golf resorts in Ireland, The K Club has a rich history attached to it. Alongside hosting prestigious events like the Ryder Cup and The Irish Open, The K Club was the venue for the European Open between 1995-2007, which witnessed the triumph of some of the sport’s greatest names. In 1995, at the first European Open to take place at the Resort, two-time Masters champion Bernhard Langer secured his 35th DP World Tour win after he defeated Englishman Barry Lane in a play-off. In 1999, former World Number One Lee Westwood secured his first European Open victory before defending his title in 2000, his most successful year to date. The Englishman won five times on the DP World Tour in 2000 to climb to the top of the rankings, ending Colin Montgomerie’s run of seven Order of Merit wins between 1993-1999. In 2001, Darren Clarke took top honours, finishing three shots ahead of 2018 European Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjørn, two-time Open Champion Pádraig Harrington and 1991 Masters winner Ian

Woosnam. US Open winners Michael Campbell and Retief Goosen have both claimed European Open victories at The K Club, in 2002 and 2004 respectively, while Montgomerie won the 2007 edition, his last victory on the DP World Tour. “That kind of heritage is unrivalled and so important to guests who want to learn more about the golﬁng history of the Resort. Ever since the golf courses were built in the 1990’s, golf has played a huge role at the resort, attracting guests from all over the world. AN ALL-TIME GREAT

Donning that green jacket for the first time was a culmination of many years of sweat, tears and hard work for Rory McIlroy. In April 2025, in a dramatic play-off win over Justin Rose, the Northern Irishman landed his first Masters Green Jacket, thus putting an end to an 11-year wait for his fifth major win. At just 35 years of age, McIlroy has earned the title of “alltime great”, standing alongside Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Ben Hogan and Gene Sarazen – the only male golfers to have won all four of the tournaments that matter most. “Everyone here at The K Club was eager to congratulate him on his astonishing win when he arrived for the 2025 Amgen Irish Open, which of course he also triumphed in. I think that sometimes, golf as a sport sits in the shadows. His win has shone a light on the skill and sheer determination it takes to excel in the sport as he has. It was an Irish Open ﬁlled with tension as the world’s top golfers took to Palmer North in an epic battle that culminated in a nail-biting showdown. The ﬁrst day saw an early pace set by Nacho Elvira, Thorbjørn Olesen and Romain Langasque

while a leaderboard shufﬂe on Friday kept a rapt audience guessing as to who would lift the trophy. On Saturday, it looked like Spain’s Angel Hidalgo might make it to the top, while France’s Adrien Saddier was also making waves. The ﬁnale on Sunday had it all – suspense, drama and a sudden death play-off that thrilled the audience. McIlroy cemented his solid performance over the previous three days with well-timed birdies, before tying with Lagergren on 17 under par. In the playoff, Lagergren sent his approach shot into the water to the left of the green. It was McIlroy’s for the taking – as the crowd erupted into roars, he claimed victory with a 27-foot eagle putt at the 72nd hole.

GOLFING GREATNESS

Rory McIlroy will no doubt remember 2025 as a year of unimaginable victory. In April, he ended his long wait for a ﬁfth major title and completed a Grand Slam at The Masters, becoming just the sixth player to complete a career grand slam of major successes. He follows in the footsteps of Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. Just a few short months later, he would triumph over Sweden’s Joakim Lagergren in a tense play-off at the Amgen Irish Open at The K Club.

The holiday of Halloween began in Ireland and was originally celebrated as the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of harvest season and the beginning of winter. The Celts’ belief was that at this time of year, the curtain between the world of the living and the dead was at its thinnest and those who had passed might return to the land of the living. With the introduction of Christianity, the observance changed and evolved through the centuries to the

holiday we know and love today with costumes, bonﬁres and trick or treating. At The K Club, Halloween is a time to embrace the spooky and the estate is decorated in style, with pumpkins galore and autumnal adornments welcoming guests at every turn. Menus at this time of year get to have a little bit of fun, with macabre looking yet delicious cocktail creations that promise to delight guests. For kids, the estate hosts an annual, spookythemed mystery event which delivers scares and treats, in equal measure. They’ll get to explore the estate with some frights promised and it ends with a specially themed afternoon tea of bespoke treats they can enjoy with the new friends they’ve made along the way.

IF YOU’RE IRISH Enjoy a traditional Céad Míle Fáilte at The K Club for St Patrick’s Day where you have the option to enjoy the hustle and bustle of the capital and explore the lush 40 shades of green the countryside offers. The formal gardens were originally created by the Barton family in the 19th century. The resort gardener has

mapped out a fascinating walk where you can discover the vast and varied plants and trees growing on the estate – from the golden-limned tulip tree to the stately white willows and a majestic giant redwood. The monumental Deodar cedar is the largest by girth in Ireland; in Hindu culture this magnificent tree is revered as “the wood of the gods”. In spring, watch out for the Straffan

Snowdrop, a white spring flowering bulb unique to the estate and discovered in the 1880s by the then head gardener, Frederick Burford. You can take to the trails yourself for a gentle amble at your own pace or a romantic stroll à deux, but if you’d prefer a guided visit, Outdoor Pursuits Manager Robert Love is always happy to share his knowledge of the flora and fauna with you.

Did you know? Cauvery Madhavan, an Indian-born writer living in Ireland, is a resident at The K Club – she and her husband downsized to an apartment here after their children flew the nest. It was her love of golf that drew her to The K Club, but she now adores the walking trails along the River Liffey, which divide the estate. “I love the wildflowers on the island, there are such beautiful colours every season,” she says.

TO THE WATER With a stretch of the River Liffey running through the grounds of the estate and 10 well-stocked lakes, fly fishing is a favourite pastime of many of our guests, who love to while away an afternoon on the banks. Outdoor Pursuits Manager Robert Love grew up with the River Liffey on his doorstep and is an avid fly fisherman. He is delighted to share his knowledge of the river with guests and takes great satisfaction in knowing they’ve had a good day fishing. “The lakes are stocked with brown and rainbow trout and there are pike in them as well, so there’s a good variety,” Robert says. “There’s also carp in one of the lakes. Most people fish for trout although some want to do ‘predator fishing’ for pike, which can weigh up to 15 kilos. They’re highly impressive.” If you’re new to fishing or fancy trying it out, you’re in safe hands. A typical session could last three or four hours, as Robert describes: “You’re given the basics of fly fishing, then spend a little time trying to get a proficient cast. After that we’ll hit the water and try to get a few fish.”

NATURE WATCH

Working from his base on the island means that the wild animals have grown used to the presence of Outdoor Pursuits Manager, Robert Love; he’s spotted the resident otters coming up onto the deck outside as he works at his desk. “They’re very tolerant of the boat,” he says, adding that if you sit quietly in it, they will come up close. “That’s an amazing experience for people; they may never see an otter again in their lives. They’re very elusive.”

Robert, your guide, will point out all the sights, ensuring you don’t miss a thing. “I live a little bit further downstream and because of my local knowledge, I’m familiar with all the various creatures that live along the river,” he says. As you glide through the serene landscape, keep an eye out for elegant swans, playful ducks, jewel-toned kingﬁshers and majestic birds of prey – four species make their home on the estate, with raptors often gracing the skies. If luck is on your side, you might even catch a glimpse of a furtive otter slipping silently through the reeds to disappear into its holt.

The centrepiece of Ireland’s Ancient East, every town and village boasts heritage sites from early Christian monuments to modern interactive visitor experiences that share the county’s history in fun and informative ways. CILL DARA The name Kildare is derived from the Irish Cill Dara, meaning ‘church of the oak,’ which commemorates St. Brigid and the coming of Christianity to the central plain of Leinster

Kildare is known in international horse-breeding circles as ‘The Thoroughbred County’ and rightly so, because it hosts a number of world-class equine facilities and holds a rich horse racing heritage. Fittingly, it has three excellent racecourses in The Curragh, Punchestown and Naas, and a number of world-renowned studs. Our dedicated K Club Horse Country team have crafted a selection of unique experiences that you can explore to immerse yourself in the world of the Irish equine, including Kildangan Stud and the stables of horse training royalty Jessica Harrington and Johnny Murtagh. At Kildangan, just outside Kildare Town, you can experience the Stud’s Foal to Fame Tour that encompasses 1,500 acres with accommodation for 400 horses, with a detailed and personal guide-led walking tour of the historic estate and access to some of the world’s top thoroughbred stallions, as well as state-of-the-art facilities and private museum. At Jessica Harrington Racing in Moone, you can book an exclusive behind-the-scenes opportunity to see what a day in the life of this top trainer involves. Starting off by watching the horses warm up as Mrs Harrington narrates her plans for the horses’ upcoming campaigns, you then move on to the gallops where you gain a greater view of the facilities, the horses working out and get one-to-one time with Jessica and her team before tea/coffee and light bites are enjoyed with the Harrington Family. At champion jockey turned trainer Johnny Murtagh’s Fox Covert Stables at The Curragh, you can enjoy an exclusive morning with him, his wife and their team, before watching their horses train across 30 miles of grassland, sand and woodchip, then enjoying a beautiful home-made brunch.

The Curragh Racecourse

Punchestown

If you are looking to see horse racing up close, there is a large selection of events dotted across the calendar. Punchestown Racecourse is known as the home of Irish jump racing, with a season running from September until June, the highlight being the five-day Punchestown Festival at the end of April. This event attracts huge crowds every year, with the racing complimented by top-class entertainment, bars, food and competitions, including the Bollinger Best Dressed Lady award. The Curragh is the home of Irish flat racing and hosts Ireland’s five most important flat races known as the Classics between March and November each year. Here, you can enjoy the Curragh Racecourse Experience and learn about how the site has become the place where champions are made. Sunset, Lullymore Heritage and Discovery Park, Co Kildare

GET BACK TO NATURE

Soak up the sounds, smells and sights of nature at Donadea Forest Park. Comprising 243 hectares of woodland, it has many historical features including castle remains, walled gardens, a church, tower, ice house and boat house. It also hosts Ireland’s 9/11 Memorial, inspired by the memory of Sean Tallon, a young firefighter whose family emigrated to America from Donadea and who was one of the first to respond to the attacks on the World Trade Center.

Lullymore Heritage Park

When you take a stroll around the Bog of Allen, you’ll learn the history of one of Ireland’s most historic and precious fuels, all while enjoying the surrounding ﬂora and fauna. This peatland walk is an eye-opening look at Kildare’s bogland’s contribution to Ireland, and the little ones will be fascinated by the greenhouse of carnivorous plants. They’ll also love the many activities on offer, including pond dipping, nature crafts, a frog hunt, a bog walk, a creepy crawly search, museum and garden tour. You can ﬁnish off your experience with a visit to Lodge Bog, a living bog nature reserve. Find live sundews, feel the watery bog move and listen for the unmistakeable call of the curlew. Right beside it is Lullymore Heritage and Discovery Park. Located on a mineral island, it has panoramic views of the Bog of Allen. You can explore the many trails in serene woodland and learn about the area’s rich history, from its ancient pagan past and medieval monks, to refuges for rebels and the industrial revolution. A large outdoor adventure play area, mini golf course, train trips, a pet farm and magical treasure hunt mean it also provides fun for all the family.

Oughterard Graveyard

VILLAGE LIFE

Beautiful villages and small towns abound in Kildare, and a visit will help you breathe in their history and lore. Two Mile House village, located on the very ﬁrst turnpike road established in Ireland, carries with it a rich history of highwaymen and a visit to St Peter’s Church, built in 1791, will leave you marvelling at one of the oldest surviving examples of a stained glass window in the country, designed by the famous Harry Clarke. Mullacash village is also one for the history buffs, with burial remains from the 5th and 6th centuries found here in the 1950s, while nearby Oughterard Graveyard holds the remains of Mr Guinness himself. The Arthur Guinness Grave Museum in Ardclough also has a fascinating exhibition called From Malt to Vault, describing the origins of the brewing company.

HAPPY TRAILS

There are numerous trails that will bring you into the heart of Kildare. Follow the 10km Two Mile House Biodiversity and Heritage Trail to enjoy the wetlands of Harristown Common and you will be treated to great views of the Whites Castle, Athy, Kildare pastoral countryside, rural roads lined with beautiful hedgerows and the Wicklow Mountains in the distance. An area of major national importance, the Common has a diverse ecosystem that supports rare plants, butterflies and rare birds. Why not follow one of the greatest explorers by taking on the Shackleton Heritage Trail, where you can see beautiful towns and villages, as well as everything from Norman strongholds to a Quaker settlement? The first stop is Kilkea, birthplace of Shackleton, then Ballitore, Ireland’s first planned Quaker village and the Shackleton Museum, the only permanent exhibition in the world devoted to the great man. The Barrow Way is another great trail to explore. Starting from Lowtown, it meanders for 114km through Kildare and neighbouring Kilkenny and Carlow. Along the route you can visit quaint villages and towns such as Robertstown, Rathangan, Monasterevin (the Venice of Ireland) and Athy.

DRIVE TIME

Get in your car and take the gorgeous Gordon Bennett Route across spectacular Irish countryside. Originally raced in 1903, the route today runs from Athy on to Kilcullen before crossing the plains of the Curragh, into Kildare town and ending at Monasterevin. Moone High Cross, one of the tallest, best preserved and most celebrated of the Irish high crosses, is worth stopping at before arriving in Old Kilcullen, while in Kildare Town, you can learn all about St Brigid at her Cathedral, before heading to Clane and the site of St Ailbe’s monastery. Gordon Bennett road signs make the route an easy-to-follow tour through one of the most beautiful parts of Ireland, oﬀering a unique insight into the lives, atmosphere and sheer adrenalin behind the historic car race that roared across this 166km (104-mile) circuit.

Did you know? ARTHUR GUINNESS CAME FROM KILDARE The man who gave the world the iconic stout hailed from Co Kildare. Born in the village of Ardclough near Celbridge, he founded his ﬁrst brewery in Leixlip before purchasing the worldfamous site in Dublin. He is buried in Oughterard. THE LILYWHITES The Kildare County Gaelic Football and Hurling teams are known as ‘The Lilywhites’ because of their all-white shirts, a nickname shared by all Kildare natives. They were the ﬁrst county team to win the famous Sam Maguire Cup in 1928. SHACKLETON IS A LILYWHITE Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton was born in the Kildare village of Kilkea, near Athy. He lived there with his family before moving to England at the age of 10, after which he explored some of the most inhospitable places on Earth.

Newgrange – the mound ringed by 97 large stones featuring megalithic art – is 85m in diameter and 13m high, with a 19m passage that leads into a chamber with three alcoves, all aligned perfectly with the rising sun that shines through on the Winter Solstice. The East of Ireland is, to put it mildly, very, very old and contains some of the most impressive ancient structures known to man. All within an hour of The K Club, it is a place where you can step back in time and enjoy the past while living in the moment.

Wicklow is known as the ‘Garden of Ireland’, which is saying something given the outstanding natural beauty of our landscape. Stunning scenery and historical the mountains and forests will amaze you, while Glendalough, situated in the Wicklow Mountains National Park, is arguably the most beautiful site to see. Its Monastic Site and Round Tower stand before a picture-postcard backdrop of mountains, forest and lakes, a tranquil place that will soothe all your senses. There’s a selection of walks and trails in the area, with educational nature walks for adults and children.

ANCIENT HISTORY

Glendalough Monastic Site, Co Wicklow

The neolithic site of Newgrange in the beautiful and historically important Boyne Valley was built by Stone Age farmers around 5,200 years ago, making it older than the Pyramids of Giza and Stonehenge and is a wonder to behold. The jewel in the crown of Ireland’s Ancient East, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was originally believed to be a passage tomb, but archaeologists now classify it as an ancient temple, a place of astrological, spiritual, religious and ceremonial importance. There are as many as 35 smaller but similar mounds to be found around the area known as the Boyne Valley and while here, it is well worth taking a tour (either guided or on your own steam) around this stunning landscape. Explore the fascinating Hill of Tara, the historic seat of power of the High Kings, and see the Hill of Slane, where Saint Patrick famously lit an Easter ﬁre in 433 in deﬁance of the local pagan king.

LUNAR LANDSCAPE

For an experience that is almost out of this world, a visit to The Burren, near the Cliffs of Moher, is highly recommended. This area of limestone rock covering majestic mountains, tranquil valleys and meandering streams, holds an innate sense of spiritual peace combined with an eerie landscape that seems to belong to another planet. There are more than 90 megalithic tombs and monuments older than Egypt’s pyramids, as well as ring forts, and the rich tapestry of colour created by the more than 700 different species of plant will leave you with a sense of wonder that will linger long in the memory. Also in The Burren are the fantastic Aillwee Caves, where you can go underground to view spectacular stalagmite and stalactite formations as well as ancient brown bear remains. It is said that God made the Ring of Kerry last – He was only practising before that. Stunning scenery, some of the best beaches in Europe, a landscape tailor-made for outdoor pursuits or indoor relaxation and an ancient history make this area, the Iveragh Peninsula, a must-see for any visitor. At the heart of Ireland’s Ancient East, the town of Cashel is most famous for the Rock of Cashel that looms over it. Legend goes that the devil bit off more than he could chew when he dropped this impressive mass of limestone right in the heart of the Tipperary countryside. The site became home to a spectacular collection of medieval buildings that remain today and holds centuries of history. This is a land where St Patrick once stood, where kings ruled the land and where legends live on in stone. While visiting the Rock is the main thing to do in town, you’ll also ﬁnd Cashel is a charming destination in its own right, with great little pubs and excellent restaurants.

GO VIKING

A sheltered bay, strategically located on the River Suir, along with a good trading location, attracted hordes of Norse raiders to Waterford in the year 914. More than 1,100 years later, Ireland’s first city is still going strong. You can still feel their presence, with the landmark monument Viking Triangle, Waterford Reginald’s Tower sitting in the heart of an area known as the Viking Triangle. Stepping inside its thick stone walls, you can enjoy an exhibition on Viking Waterford and view the stunning 12th century treasure, the Kite Brooch. You can also head to the excellent Medieval Museum to see 15th century clothof-gold vestments, as well as the Great Charter Roll of 1372. Bishop’s Palace on the Georgian Mall displays the wealth, beauty and architectural delights of an 18th century townhouse built on the back of a booming trade with Newfoundland. A visit to the House of Waterford Crystal is also recommended but while in Waterford, you must try the ‘blaa’, a special floury bread roll unique to the city. Not far away is beautiful coastal scenery such as the Copper Coast Geopark’s cliﬀs and coves, while the ﬁshing village of Dunmore East is as beautiful a spot as you can imagine. Here, you can take in historic walks, water sports and golf, as well as tours of the bay in a Viking-style wooden sailboat.

GO MEDIEVAL IN KILKENNY

During the day, you can enjoy culture and history with medieval sites such as the 16th century merchants complex Rothe House, the 13th century Black Abbey and the Medieval Mile, the most prominent and fascinating part of which is the 12th century Kilkenny Castle. The Norman Earl Strongbow constructed the ﬁrst building here, after which it was expanded and reinforced to become the palatial site it is now that includes a National Art Gallery and 21 hectares of parkland. Other cultural highlights include the Kilkenny Design Centre and Kilkenny Art Gallery, but you can also let your hair down by trying Ireland’s oldest ale on a tour of the Smithwick’s brewery. Then at night, the city really comes to life, with trad sessions everywhere and some of the best festivals in Ireland.

HIDDEN HEARTLANDS Visitors to Ireland predominantly spend their time around the East and West, but the land in between known as Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands is well worth a visit too. With rivers, lakes and canals dotted throughout, it is an area that is both serene and scenic, while there are plentiful activities to keep everybody occupied. Split by the 500km of navigable waters on the River Shannon, and not far from Kildare, there is a world of wonder and entertainment on hand.

KAYAK IN CAVAN

Sitting in the shade of Cuilcagh Mountain in the Heartland’s County Cavan is Cavan Burren Park, one of the most fascinating attractions in the area. Free and open to the public year round, this limestone plateau formed 340 million years ago, when Ireland had a tropical climate, and still has the remnants of the walls of ﬁelds laid out by neolithic settlers from 4,500 years ago, as well as the wedge tomb known as the Giant’s Grave. There are numerous marked trails around the park, including the Giant’s Leap Trail and Promontory Fort Trail that will bring you to these ancient landmarks. Cavan itself has a lake for every day of the year and one of its most beautiful is Lough Oughter, with the fantastic Clough Oughter Castle on a lone island at its centre making it a spectacular spot. You can hire a kayak from Cavan Adventure Centre, and paddle your way around this historic landmark surrounded by astonishing scenery.

WATER WORLD

Known as the marina capital of Ireland, Carrick-on-Shannon is a small town with a big personality. Situated at a strategic crossing on Ireland’s longest river, it lies across the border of Leitrim and Roscommon and is home to Rowing Ireland’s yearly Carrick-on-Shannon regatta. Indeed, water is quite literally at the very centre of this town’s identity and there are countless activities to dive into. An angler’s dream, there are more than 40 lakes in which to fish for bream, pike and perch, and a number of specialist tackle stores in the town. Home to nine churches, two round towers and a castle, as well as a number of intricately carved stone crosses and statues, this site underlines the importance of this monastery, which was once a thriving settlement, not just for religious purposes, but also for trade, education and craftsmanship. BEAUTIFUL IRELAND Church, Croagh Patrick, Clew Bay

PILGRIMAGE

The 365 islands in Clew Bay near Westport are isolated and beautiful and a short trip by boat to any of these will bring tranquillity to your day, but they are best seen by making the hike up the 760m Croagh Patrick, nicknamed ‘The Reek’ to take in the amazing scenery. An important site of pilgrimage, thousands of intrepid trekkers walk to the top in bare feet on the last Sunday in July every year as part of a ritual dating back to the Middle Ages. It was ﬁrst used as a site of pagan ritual before St Patrick allegedly spent 40 days fasting at its peak, upon which a church has been present since the 5th century, although the church there today was built in the early 20th century.

GO WEST

With the rugged terrain of a mountain range to one side and the Atlantic to the other, this is quintessential Ireland, a place where Irish is still spoken as the main language of the people. The whole area is basked in an ever-changing, eerily mystical light straight out of a fairytale, where a sunny, glimmering scene can become a dark, foreboding yet strangely beautiful shadow in seconds. From Galway, you can travel by boat out to the world-famous Aran Islands, where you may as well throw your watch into the sea because time moves diﬀerently here, knowing it holds no sway.

CLIFF FACING

Yes, it is a bit of a tourist trap, but if you are hitting the West Coast of Ireland, you really do need to see the Cliffs of Moher. The dramatic 14km stretch of cliffs tower 509 feet (155m) above the wild Atlantic Ocean and have to be seen to be believed. Those who linger into the evening will be rewarded with the most enchanting sunset view. If you want to get away from the crowds and experience the cliffs from their natural and unspoilt side, hike along the cliff edge on the Cliff Walk with a trail that leads from Doolin to Hag’s Head and on to Liscannor. On the northernmost point of Fanad Peninsula lies Fanad Head, with wonderful views of the rough coast. For the even more adventurous, there is a narrow ridge path, “One Man’s Path”, on which the cliffs can be crossed.

n Yemen, UNICEF has solar powered water projects securing safe water for 2.5 million Yemenis, including 137,000 people in the city of Dhamar. This is where Nabil, his wife Salma and their three children live, having been forced to flee conflict in their hometown of Taiz. The blockade of Yemen’s Hudaydah port had stopped supplies of fuel into the country needed for its’ infrastructure to function. So even in Dhamar’s relative safety, the family’s existence was perilous. Nabil and his family lived in inadequate housing with no reliable income. They struggled to find anything to eat or drink

UN recommend the family has each day. Nabil says: “The water tasted strange; it tasted odd.” It didn’t affect the adults, but the water made three-year-old Mohammed ill. Suffering from a sore throat, vomiting and diarrhoea, he was diagnosed with cholera at the hospital.

Water crisis affects safety and education

Nabil and Salma were distraught, convinced Mohammed was going to die. “I felt like our boy was done,” says Nabil. But thanks to his parents’ quick thinking and care, Mohammed made a full recovery. “When he got better, we were relieved as we saw our son well, and everything got better.” Though, of course, Nabil and Salma’s worries weren’t over. With no dependable supply of clean water, any of their three children could catch a life-threatening disease — and the next time may not end happily. As well as deadly diseases, the lack of safe water was impacting children’s education. Ensuring their families had enough water; many were forced to drop out of school to join the lengthy queues at the water tankers.

Transforming lives with solar power

Yet, despite the difﬁculty, UNICEF is partnering with Yemeni communities in another 149 solar water projects, reaching 2.5 million people with clean, safe water. These projects connect clean water to schools, health centres — every aspect of community life. Moreover, at the same time they reduce consumption and reliance on fossil fuels. So far, fossil fuel consumption in these water systems has been reduced by up to 63% in urban areas and between 80–100% in rural areas. The impact of such initiatives is clear: they generate and secure clean water sources for the future. They also stabilise communities by generating sustainable employment and combat the health and economic impact of unsafe and insecure water supplies.

Breaking the cycle of poverty and disease

UNICEF’s €1.2 million solar-powered water project now provides safe, running water in Nabil’s apartment and to another 137,000 Dhamar residents. What’s more, the project is growing Yemen’s own sustainable skilled workforce. So, one day Nabil’s son Mohammed may grow up to become like Hasan. Hasan is a 24-year-old engineer who supervises Dhamar’s huge solar-powered water system — ensuring the delivery of clean water to his community. “UNICEF provided the panels, inverters, control devices and the entire system,” says Hasan. Hasan sees his work as both a humanitarian service and a highly technical skill. He hopes others in Yemen learn skills like his, so his country isn’t reliant on outside technical assistance. “It allows us to assist directly instead of waiting for other engineers to come from other countries,” explains Hasan. “This project has inspired me to create new solutions to problems.” Sustaining a project like this is always complex, but this is even more true in Yemen, which remains in the grip of an ongoing conﬂict.

Overall diarrhoea deaths attributable to unsafe water and sanitation declined by approximately half between 2000 and 2019. But we need to do more. Experts tell us that globally, 1 in 4 children will live in areas with high water stress by 2040. UNICEF’s commitment to clean water initiatives is a core part of our organisational DNA.
